Motivation Mondays: GIVING BACK
“I believe that we all have a responsibility to give back. No one becomes successful without lots of hard work, support from others, and a little luck. Giving back creates a virtuous cycle that makes everyone more successful.” Ron Conway

Motivation Mondays: GIVING BACK
For in truth it is life that gives unto life – while you, who deem yourself a giver, are but a witness. Khalil Gibran
I was always taught about the importance of giving back and helping those less fortunate. I think it’s also incredibly rewarding. Claire Holt
Volunteering is a great way to look outside your own problems. Giving back to makes you happier by both giving you a sense of purpose and helping to put your problems in perspective. Karen Salmansohn
Giving back is something that comes from the heart to me. It’s not that I do it because it’s the right thing: I do it because I want to do it. Henry Kravis
When do you Give Back? When we talk about Giving Back, we often think about the holiday season and our various acts of charity in our communities and beyond. However, the act of giving back is an endeavor that demands we remember to reach out, lend a hand in/out of our communities, help another person in need, and give of our abundance on a daily basis. To give back is to remember that we are full and able to share of our abundance. To give back is not just to have the means to do so, it is having the will and desire to do it without prompting or cajoling. We do not need to have a room filled with gold coins to feel abundant because abundance is an inside job. It is a feeling of gratitude and a willingness to reach out and help another soul. Often, we sit and wonder how we can be expected to give of what we have when some of us feel we have so little. But the act of truly giving is magical. It is magical in the sense that it doesn’t require enormous wealth. What it requires is a receptive spirit and a desire to give of our time, goods, or even ideas.
When should we give? It is a habit that is worth developing because the inner joy and sense of duty and service that comes with giving cannot be described fully. If we develop the habit of giving back in some small way every day, we will see it grow until it becomes second nature. We reach a place within where we don’t even have to think about it; it becomes an unconscious act of blessing others and ourselves. The little secret of giving is that it blesses us too. When we give, we open our hearts to receive the abundance of the universe and it shows up in serendipitous ways. To Give Back is to see ourselves as our brother’s/sister’s keeper. We do it because we must. We do it because we know that it returns to us and our progeny tenfold. Every day, we do it because our spirit soars in gratitude and we know that we are raising the bar in our energy sphere and beyond.

Giving Chapter V by Khalil Gibran
Then said a rich man, “Speak to us of Giving.”
And he answered:
You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.
For what are your possessions but things you keep and guard for fear you may need them tomorrow?
And tomorrow, what shall tomorrow bring to the over-prudent dog burying bones in the trackless sand as he follows the pilgrims to the holy city?
And what is fear of need but need itself?
Is not dread of thirst when your well is full, thirst that is unquenchable?
There are those who give little of the much which they have – and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome.
And there are those who have little and give it all.
These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty.
There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.
And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism.
And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue;
They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space.
Though the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth.
It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding;
And to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving
And is there aught you would withhold? Contd below
“Giving back, doing motivational speeches and stuff like that, that’s always made me feel good. If you repeatedly go out there, and you are the change that you want to see, then that’s what you are.” Keke Palmer

I believe in giving back very strongly. Sanford I. Weill
I’ve always had a passion for giving back. It’s a family tradition that comes from my devout parents. They were always giving back and serving the community. So when I became fortunate enough and blessed to play the game of basketball, I was also fortunate enough to follow in my parents’ footsteps and give back like the way they did. Dikembe Mutombo
Hope and purpose in this world is living as best as you can and maybe having life that gives back. But simply giving back isn’t purpose; it’s a branch of purpose, but it is not the trunk or root of the tree. Nick Vujicic
Is Giving Back the domain of the wealthy alone? Absolutely NOT! Each of us has the ability to give back through volunteer work, helping folks in our communities, working with organizations that help the homeless and by teaching our children to share. since the foundation of a charitable spirit begins in our homes, we must make it a priority to teach out family to help others and give back. By giving back to our local and even our global community, we are reinvesting in the progress and success of all who benefit from our generosity. That very act of giving back, circles back to us and reverberates in many directions that we might never even know.
If you read the story of the Dog in the Manger, it might remind you of someone you know. Or perhaps of yourself when you are feeling selfish? The dog was adamant about protecting the hay. In his selfishness, he couldn’t see that the hay would not feed him. He had access to his own food. Sometimes we hold unto things that are of no use to us instead of giving them back to hose who need it. We all need to let go of the greed, stinginess and lack mentality. To give to others does NOT diminish what we have, it enriches our spirit and reminds us to be grateful. Start today… while doing your Cyber Monday shopping or even on Giving Tuesday tomorrow. It is never too late to give back.

A Story: The Lesson of The Dog In The Manger
People frequently begrudge something to others that they themselves cannot enjoy. Even though it does them no good, they won’t let others have it. Listen to a fable about such an event. There was a wicked dog lying in a manger full of hay. When the cattle came and wanted to eat, the dog barred their way, baring his teeth. The cattle said to the dog, “You are being very unfair by begrudging us something we need which is useless to you. Dogs don’t eat hay, but you will not let us near it.” The fable shows that it is not easy to avoid envy or greed or confusing over sharing/giving to others; with some effort you can try to escape its effects, but it never goes away entirely.’ Steinhöwel‘s Esopus (c.1476) via Wikipedia
Giving and Taking by Khalil Gibran
Once there lived a man who had a valley-full of needles. And one
day the mother of Jesus came to him and said: ‘Friend, my son’s
garment is torn and I must needs to mend it before he goeth to the
temple. Wouldst thou not give me a needle?’
And he gave her not a needle, but he gave her a learned discourse
on Giving and Taking to carry to her son before he should go to
the temple.

Motivation Mondays: GIVING BACK
My father… very generous, very philanthropic, very charitable man. My siblings and I and my mother continue with always appreciating and always giving back. It’s something I hope that I’ve become a role model for my children. Steve Tisch
What is important is family, friends, giving back to your community and finding meaning in life. Adrian Grenier
I am a huge believer in giving back and helping out in the community and the world. Think globally, act locally I suppose. I believe that the measure of a person’s life is the effect they have on others. Steve Nash
I absolutely believe in the power of tithing and giving back. My own experience about all the blessings I’ve had in my life is that the more I give away, the more that comes back. That is the way life works, and that is the way energy works. Ken Blanchard
Why Do We Give Back? We do so because we recognize the wisdom in offering a helping hand and we also know that our achievements have not happened without the help of others. When we read that one hand washes another, it is not a platitude. It is this very act of regeneration, sharing, and passing it forward that sustains our global family. Imagine if the supply chain that reaches our homes through food, education, energy and other services were taken away? We would have to go out and do it all by ourselves. That is not humanly possible.
It takes great courage, effort and a spirit of gratitude to give to others without expectation or thoughts about loss or deprivation but it demands a regular effort. So each of us comes to this planet with a set of skills, and we contribute our part to the upliftment of humanity. Sadly, some contribute to its destruction and that is counter-intuitive to the work and goal of nature and our life force. It is the collective effort of those who give back to the earth by helping humanity who sustain our planet. Be a contributor not just a consumer. We must all remember to give and much as we can of our time, goods, ideas and hugs/love… We all deserve a hand.
READ: Khalil Gibran: On Giving And Taking…
Giving Chapter V by Khalil Gibran Contd
All you have shall someday be given;
Therefore give now, that the season of giving may be yours and not your inheritors’.
You often say, “I would give, but only to the deserving.”
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.
And what desert greater shall there be than that which lies in the courage and the confidence, nay the charity, of receiving?
And who are you that men should rend their bosom and unveil their pride, that you may see their worth naked and their pride unabashed?
See first that you yourself deserve to be a giver, and an instrument of giving.
For in truth it is life that gives unto life – while you, who deem yourself a giver, are but a witness.
And you receivers – and you are all receivers – assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives.
Rather rise together with the giver on his gifts as on wings;
For to be over-mindful of your debt, is to doubt his generosity who has the free-hearted earth for mother, and God for father. Khalil Gibran

Giving back is the most important thing we can do. It makes me grow as a human being and I know I can make people happy. I always give back without any expectation, giving back means so much to me.
I try to give back, while we live week to week, as you said, there are many other ways to do this. I try to give a little extra. When someone asks for a box of spaghetti I try to give the sauce or meat also. If I’m doing a thread I try to do above what is expected on some, if someone needs a sitter I try to have them fed when they are picked. Just simple things like that.
Yes and it comes back to you in many other ways. 🙂
Giving back is sharing your blessings. I always try to spread a little cheer, paying a favor forward and helping create a kindness revolution. It feels so good deep inside to be able to reach out and give back.
Giving back is so important, we often forget to give back all year round. I love making others smile and doing random acts of kindness, it matters that we be nice humans to each other in gifting and giving best we can to everyone.
Such a great post and such an important reminder!
Giving Back is such an important thing to do. It shows respect, appreciation, and thanks for what they did or gives to us.
I always look forward to your Motivation Monday posts Elizabeth. I just love the short stories and the positive quotes and passages. They’re always so thought provoking. For me the act of giving from the heart should come naturally, but unfortunately to many it doesn’t. Which is real sad. They’ll never find that deep joy from doing something for someone without expecting anything in return.
Thank you Michelle and you give so much too… Sadly, some will never learn the joy you describe.
I always try really hard to give back. No matter how big or small, even if it’s just a smile. I appreciate your posts on Mondays. I like that you keep the important stuff front and center. Have an awesome day!
I teach kindergarten so I feel that I give back everyday. Even though it is my job, I feel that it is giving back to the community. I am having them doing random acts of kindness this month for homework so that they too can give back.
I love giving back! This year I’m planning on doing a little research on my local food banks and homeless shelters. I’m hoping to donate some well needed items.
This is beautiful. It’s so important to give back and I try to live this example for my children. I hope that they will always view giving to others as a moral imperative.
giving back is so important no matter where you are in life! it blesses us all!
giving back is so important! I love this viewpoint
I think that people should give back more often, not only when religious holidays are approaching. The ones who need help among us need it all over the year, not just around Christmas. Even if we can only give one hand and help out with a simple thing, it still matters.
Yes, it is an all year act of generosity.
This is an amazing post, loved reading your perspective. Giving back is indeed magical, it does not come easily but when it comes to you, it feels so relaxing and peaceful inside. Giving back is something that can not be measured or calculated and you do not need to have a lot of money or other physical property but a kind heart and will to give back.
It starts with the willingness to think of others…
There are so many ways to give back. i think it starts with being grateful and helping others. It is not about giving it back to a particular person but in general
Oh its a wonderful thing to be able to give, be it the gift of giving someone a smile or helping them in other ways when they need it, volenteering, donating, giving support.. there are so many endless ways and not all of them always mean giving gifts or financial help. I think it is all just as important and I truly believe everyone has something to give each and every day.
I believe that too
Giving back is such a noble act. I mean, sometimes you get to receive a huge blessing and you forget to share it with others. Nope, not me. I always make sure that I give a part of and share whatever I receive. And I make sure I patronize companies that include this in their business practice.
Same here and we all need to make the effort even if we start small… Thank you! 🙂
I’ve heard that studies show that people who make less money give more percentage-wise than wealthier people. I believe that. People who are more middle and working class aren’t really after making lots of money and therefore might feel more inclined to help their community. I just hope that everyone remembers that there are many ways to give back and donating money is just one of many.
Sad but true in some instances. Yes, we can give in many ways.
Giving back is something so important and go good to learn and grow with!
I copied the positive motivation tip to a sticky note on my desktop to remind me to give without expectations. That’s especially important this time of year!
Giving back is super important. Especially because most of us got a hand at some point in our life from someone who was also giving back. And it is a good thing to do that will makes us feel more alive!
I think it’s so importAnt TLC give back. Even if you don’t have much. I always try to volunteer and help out in my community as much as I can. I doesn’t have to be money. Give back your time instead!
Thanks for the encouragement! Giving to others is so rewarding and in some of the darkest seasons of my life, giving to others was one of the things that helped me experience hope and joy.
What a wonderful post. I believe that giving back is one of the most beautiful thing to do. It has a great or unexplained feeling when you give back.
I agree, Giving is not just for the wealthy, we all can give in some sort of way. This is such a good post at this time year when we are indulging and need to remember to give back.
I love Khalil Gibran’s quotes, saying and poetry. They’ve always rung true in my heart. I couldn’t agree more with this post. Its when we give back to the world that I think we start fulfilling our divine destiny.
Amen to that Heather!
It’s really great to become a giver, than a taker…. All givers are making the world, a better place to live in…
It is so important to be thankful for what we have and give back to the world.
I always give back to those who have helped me in their own little ways. I always appreciate every bit of kindness I experience especially in this world full of differences.
This is so true! Giving back can be so rewarding! So many people are in need. This is a great reminder.
Giving back can come in various forms: monetarily, volunteering, mentoring, donating clothes, goods, and food. I always participate in the national food drive where you leave a bag of food by the mailbox for UPS to collect. I also donate unwanted clothes to AMVets. I have a group of local & national organizations that I try to donate to regularly.
I’m a big fan of the Vets and I donate to them too.
i love this so much! such an inspiration! keep doing all the good!
this is such an interesting and necessary discussion! I think giving back is definitely an everyday thing. It is true that we think about it more when the Holidays approach, but giving back can be done at so many levels every day. We ought to think more like a “whole” a community, and less like individuals. Though, it is not easy, it is possible !
Everything is possible…
I love this! As a family we work to give back to the community we live in and support others around us in need. Teaching young children how to give back is important to both of us. Thanks for sharing!
this is a beautiful post, it definitely makes me think I don’t give back as much as I should… Gives me something to think about 🙂 thank you.
I agree – giving back builds you and builds your community. This is as good a time as any to start thinking about those less fortunate.
Giving back is so important and a must to keep spreading kindness in the world!
I believe giving back is so important …. we all need to be appreciative of the blessings we have been given in our lives and in return share those blessings with others.
Giving back is so important and it’s the best attitude. and we should help those who need help. I am giving back to helping other people.
Just the 2 little words “giving back” implies privilege. You give back because you have already received :-). Giving back is the action of thank you for all the blessings you are blessed with.
.
Such a great topic! And I couldn’t agree more that giving back is so important. It made me realise that I don’t volunteer as much as I should. Thank you for inspiration.
I always make it a point to give back in the smallest way possible as any small effort counts…such an inspiring post…
Thank you… we can give of our time too. 🙂
Giving back is so important. I think in this day and age we often forget to do that.
I love your idea of Motivation Mondays – it is exactly the day when most of us need motivation more than ever. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Giving back is something we need to be always aware of.
I agree. Always look out for those that looked out for you while you were building, and always give back. That’s something I believe in.
Greed can be such a evil and destructive force, kind of illustrated by your Dog in the Manger story. Those that have the ability to give, should give freely and help those in need. Those stock piles of money mean nothing to you, but everything to those who desperately need it.
True… I’ve never understood the type that deprives others of what they don’t need or use.. a sickness really.
Giving back to society is the real religion. More so when giving back is in terms of service. These lines from your post portray the meaning so well, “you give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” I firmly believe so and do my bit.
I’m totally with you on the subject.
It is so important for us to understand the importance of giving back! Selflessly sharing what we have can completely transform our lives. I loved reading this post, this is something that I believe in!
Being able to give is such a blessing I wish more of us took advantage of
This is amazing. My mama has always taught me the importance of giving to others. The most successful people are the biggest givers, and I look to follow in their steps of being givers. Not just for success, but it’s ingrained in my DNA and it’s important in my faith. What a wonderful and inspirational post.
Totally. Giving back says a lot more about our hearts than anything we can ever speak. Thanks for this reminder.
This holiday season I want to give back to the community. This post help me feel more inspired.
Giving back is incredibly important! I always find that I want to reciprocate the kindness of those who thought of me when I expected it the least. Giving back is an awesome way to keep the chain of kindness growing.
This year has been tough. So much so, that most of our family don’t expect gifts from us this Christmas. But through all we have suffered and are still pushing through, we have managed to still give back. I don’t have much to give, but I’m a firm believer that whatever I have been given, I should help others with.
Wishing you peace and love… forbearance too.
Wow I’m so touched with this article of yours!
It was indeed a great pleasure to read this
Thanks for this lovely motivation 😊
This makes me to read more and more and love your blog …
Thanks for such a lovely post😊
Giving back is important. There are so many people you can impact, even if you think you have little to give.
Thanks for sharing ways to give and tying it back to meaningful motivation.
Giving back or paying forward, is the same because it is an act of love and caring for those who helped you get to where you are right now. Every Christmas eve, I prepare a few bags containing a hot meal, bread, a bottle of water, and some treats (cupcakes or cookies) and give them to the homeless people I see on the streets. My sons bring old blankets, jackets and other pieces of clothing to give out too. Sharing our blessings has become a tradition every Christmas eve.
Charity does begin at home. It starts with us… 🙂
Great post! giving back is so important and can be really rewarding!
So timely, Elizabeth! Right on the heels of Thanksgiving and gratitude, our next step is to give back! We actually make it a family “thing” to give back throughout the year, all year, whenever we can. We’ve got homeless friends galore, bags full of essentials in the car to give away, and memory care facilities we visit every month of the year. I truly hope it teaches my kids something and that they won’t forget to keep giving when they leave the nest.
May they remember…
I give back because I am fortunate to have the ideas that I do have and during this time of the year I feel even more fortunate to have them.
I’m always doing my best to give back whenever I can. It may not be money, but I think giving your time speaks volumes as well.
What a strange week it’s been. First Thanksgiving and acknowledging how fortunate we are. Then to Black Friday and Cyber Monday begging us to think of all we don’t have and need at discounted prices. And then ending the days on Giving Tuesday. I love how it’s been end-capped with a reminder to be grateful and share.
Great observation. 🙂
Giving back is something my family do on a daily basis. I’m happy my mom taught me about the kindness of giving back and I can share it with my girls. We are not without our own needs, but that not an excuse. At the dinner table daily, I love to hear my daughters talk about giving back and acts of kindness they experienced. It truly warms my heart.
They say it’s always better to give than to receive, and I believe so. I’ve always believed in karma, and the fact that doing good brings you even more blessings. 🙂
Your posts are always full with an inspirational message, it’s so great to see.
I try to give back whenever I can, I go through our home monthly to donate to Purple Heart, volunteer at several different events and am always choing carefully where I shop (I prefer places the give back to other organizations)
I have been thinking of ways to give back recently since the holidays are fast approaching. I don’t have much, but I really love the feeling of being able to help others!
It’s really important for me to give back and help out as much as I can. Especially these days when our world needs a little more kindness. This is such a powerful message. I hope a lot of people would read it.
Yes… we need more kindness in the world. 🙂
motivational and inspiring, i will share this with my friends and workmates! Nice one

Thank you for the inspiration, as always! Giving is a spiritual practice as well as a practical application. For me, I receive so much when I give – how could I not? After all, I have been given so much, and it is one way I express my gratitude. <3 Evelyn
And we should all remember that… 🙂
This is such a brilliant post with some lovely profound comments on. Great reminder that anyone can give back and support others. I agree that anyone can give back, regardless of income / wealth and have actually found that sometimes its those who don’t have much money or time are the most generous!
I agree with Ron Conway’s quote that giving back is a virtuous cycle that makes everyone more successful. Everyone should have at least one strong cause to be passionate for and give back to the community. It is important to support and strengthen the communities where we live!
That is an important part of giving back…
Giving back is important. I love the idea of giving back in some way everyday. And it’s true that we don’t have to have material wealth to be able to give back.
this is the perfect article for this time of year!
I truly wish people were into giving like this all year-round. However, I love that people get so into it around this time of the year.
It is a beautiful and meaningful post. It is very important to remember this, especially during holiday season. I have few personal causes that I support related to animals rescue and nature.

Just what i needed to be reminded today. I realized how giving back can actually make you feel better and recharge in a way! I truly believe no one becomes successful without lots of hard work, support from others, and a little luck. Giving back is a great way to say thankyou as well.
I’m a long time fan of Khalil Gibran. I actually reread The Prophet at least once a year.
As always, a wonderful post! I try my best to teach my kids by example, because I want them to know what a great gift it is to be able to give back to others
This is such a great one! Giving back really does make you feel good, and there are so many ways to do it. I’ve been trying to find an organization to volunteer with where I can use my skills to help others!
Oh!! This is such a great post. Giving back is such an important thing in life. We try to give back at the end of the year to make sure families in need get a good celebration, but it’s important to give back all year around.
As much as giving back is necessary, it was just wrong in the first place to take it away!!! I’m mostly talking about what we take from mother earth!!!
It is very important to know how to give back to people who love and care for you. First is family, specially parents. We should know how to value them and how to give back all the love they gave us.. In time we will also be parents, and we will do just the same thing what they did. We can change partners, but we can never replace our parents. The best way to give back is to take care of them when they are old, to let them feel how important they are and how much we love them while they are still alive, while we can still make them feel it, while they can see it. most important is, we must always make them proud.. but them on each dream you have, and dedicate it not only to your self, husband and kids, but also to your parents. making them proud by being the best person you can be.. coz you serve as the mirror of their personality.. the mirror who they are and how they raised you.
Give and let it be… Give and be open to receive. all true.
If you take too much, you end up too full. If you give too much, you end up empty. It’s really important that we learn when do we need to give back.
Balance is key in everything… true.
This is one of the best quotes that made gave me inspiration, “I believe that we all have a responsibility to give back. No one becomes successful without lots of hard work, support from others, and a little luck. Giving back creates a virtuous cycle that makes everyone more successful.” From this Christmas season onward I also will start the habit of giving back.
Thanks for the sharing. God bless you
Great post! I always enjoy reading them because they are so motivational. I really like that this is the season when people start giving back to those around them. I wish it would be an all year thing but at least most people remember to give back during this season.
Giving back is essential. It is a way to share our love to others. I agree with you that true giving doesn’t require enormous wealth. It requires a receptive spirit and a desire or willingness to give our time, goods, and words of wisdom or ideas. Those things are so important to human that even money can’t buy those for us.
I love the words from “Giving Chapter V by Khalil Gibran Contd”. It’s so powerful that it described well the nature of man in regards to giving back and those questions are truth of realization to meditate upon.
It remains one of my favorite pieces on Giving… 🙂
This is one thing I always keep telling my kids to do from a young age though it is not so easy for them to understand or even for us to give something without expecting but it is a beautiful feel if we can do something without any return.
OMG. I especially love that Dog in the Manger fable. So true. You always want something when you no longer have it even if you did not use it!
Giving back is not all about giving money and presents to loved ones and those who need it. It’s also about service and spending time to spread happiness with others especially this holiday season.
Growing up my parents always made it a point for us to give back to others. No matter how small the gesture is. It always makes you feel so good inside to see others joy of receiving. It’s not all about receiving its more about giving. Now that Im a parent myself Im trying to teach my kids the same.
When I think of hubris I have guilt. I have lived all my life with people around me being better than me and letting me know that quite often. At least I thought this to be correct. I ram into a woman that went to school with me that treated me this way, although now 30 years later she has many problems caused from her life being full of turmoil just as mine had been, maybe worse. Anyhow I turned some of that ‘better than’ attitude towards my sister which I feel terribly for.
I think you meant this comment for my post on Hubris. 🙂
I always think that there will be a way to change the world with a song and voice as if that is my mission and purpose on
This earth.
Giving back is extremely important! It’s important to help others as it makes the world go round.
giving back creates circulation of love and emotions! it totally builds up and set the mood for each and everyone
The human spirit of helping others and giving is special
