Motivation Mondays: ASK
“Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.” Bernard Meltzer

Motivation Mondays: ASK
Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers. Tony Robbins
Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it. Jules Renard
Don’t Make Assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. Don Miguel Ruiz
What are you afraid to ask for/of yourself? Some of us go through life hiding, avoiding/evading, and never asking for help, guidance, clarity, understanding or even the truth about our beliefs and our fears. If we don’t ask questions, how can we take appropriate action to resolve misunderstandings and other limiting thought patterns? If life is to be lived with wisdom and consideration for the rights of all people to co-exist, we won’t get anywhere by staying mum about the issues that pull or push us to act. Asking questions is not only something we do to/for others but, it is a necessary step we must take for our own growth. Until we step up and ask ourselves tough and growth triggering questions, we will continue to live our lives on the margins of the fears we hold about ourselves and others. The elephant in the room will always loom large when we sit on our hands instead of asking direct questions that help us understand and appreciate a task or even a situation in front of us.
Questions are a necessary part of every day living; we need them to gain trust, to conduct transactions, to make a diagnosis and to reassure ourselves that all is well. In real estate and other service oriented businesses, a ruling mantra is that you must – Ask for the sale! The same applies to other areas of our lives. If we don’t ask for what we need, and take massive action to show our commitment to our request, nothing will be accomplished. Stop living in your head and start asking those freeing questions. We all have a modicum of fear in our lives (for self-preservation in the face of danger) but, we must formulate questions to help us make wise/better decisions and take action. Regardless of the reasons for the fear, ask yourself how the cost of staying mum is being exacted against your life. When we ask better questions that are well thought out, the answers can open doors to our success.
Ask Me by William Stafford
Some time when the river is ice ask me
mistakes I have made. Ask me whether
what I have done is my life. Others
have come in their slow way into
my thought, and some have tried to help
or to hurt: ask me what difference
their strongest love or hate has made.
I will listen to what you say.
You and I can turn and look
at the silent river and wait. We know
the current is there, hidden; and there
are comings and goings from miles away
that hold the stillness exactly before us.
What the river says, that is what I say. via famouspoetsandpoems.com
“It is not fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Motivation Mondays: ASK
I never learn anything talking. I only learn things when I ask questions. Lou Holtz
Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not. Robert Kennedy
People who ask confidently get more than those who are hesitant and uncertain. When you’ve figured out what you want to ask for, do it with certainty, boldness and confidence. Don’t be shy or feel intimidated by the experience. You may face some unexpected criticism, but be prepared for it with confidence. Jack Canfield
What are you afraid to ask of others? When we expect others to perform tasks for us, we have to clear about what we need and why. We also have to be clear about how they will respond, and not let a negative or half hearted response stop us from staying motivated about our goals. What is key is to always stay open and ask questions. Ask for clarification and then consider the response. When we act from a place of fear and assumptions, we get the level of hate and acrimony that we see around the world today. The root cause of such hatred is lack of understanding and the refusal to have discourse and ask questions that can move a much needed conversation forward. Ask and then wait for an answer and then ask again without prejudice or acrimony.
Are you ready to face the facts and make some changes in your thinking/beliefs? If yes, then we must also keep in mind what Eleanor said above…. Ask because you are ready to make changes in your life. Ask because you want to connect with others across the bridge. Ask because you want to speak truth to power and clarify your biases and strength. As we grow in confidence with our questions, the confusion and fog will lift. As we become emboldened in our asking, we will begin to develop clarity about our purpose and work on this planet. What is the driving force, the motivation behind your asking? Set a motivational goal to ask a question of someone in a position to help you and vise versa. Choose a different question to tackle every day.
Phenomenal Woman BY MAYA ANGELOU
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me. Contd Below via Poetryfoundation.org

Motivation Mondays: ASK

Motivation Mondays: ASK
So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Christ
Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions – Why am I doing it, What might the results be and Will I be successful? Only when you think deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, (must you ) go ahead. Chanakya
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. Henri Nouwen
Why are you afraid to ask? Until we become clear about our expectations, our desires and our fears, we will not ask the honest questions we need to ask of ourselves and others. To co-exist and achieve our goals in this world demands that we keep asking questions and keep examining our motives. Until we embrace this much needed form of self reflection and examination, we will continue to live on the periphery of our lives. We are phenomenal beings and we have to embrace that aspect of ourselves… What stops You. ASK?
Phenomenal Woman Contd
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Have a Happy, Healthy 2017!

I love this post. Sometimes, pride gets in the way so we just turn our backs without asking. Every one has a need, and if we are unable to meet those needs, it is okay to reach out and ask others for help. My faith dictates that if we ask God for a blessing, believe that you have already received it. I only ask Him for three things – to keep my family safe from harm, to bless us with good health, and for strength and guidance so that we may fulfill his Divine Plan for us.
Ask and believe are twins and much needed.
this is just the kind of motivation i needed on a monday like today! i especially love Tony Robbins!
Glad you found it helpful.
I like your positive motivation tip. You are so right, that you need to be prepared to step up to the plate. You can ask the universe for whatever but when it responds you need to be ready!
When we are ready, it works.
What an inspirational way to start the week! Asking for what you need is so important!
Yes, it’s an important tool to use.
I am always afraid to ask others for help. I am not sure, why, but I am. I know if I asked, they would be happy to help.
At least you are aware of it… Great start.
I am all about asking questions! You will never know if you never ask. Now I just need to get my daughter to listen to the answers to the questions she asks so she stops asking the same question five times in a row!
Hahaha! It comes with the age. 🙂
Thank you for sharing your beautiful words with us.
I often find myself allowing others to ask everything of me, but I am terrified to ask for anything. I fear that people might think less of me if I ask for help or show any sign of weakness. This is such a great post and an important lesson about looking within ourselves and learning to ask other for what we need.
Yes, it is an important hurdle to overcome.
What a great topic! Thanks for sharing. I honestly tend to get nervous to ask sometimes…some people are not nice…lol!
Don’t let that stand in your way…
This has inspired me to ask myself some hard questions about where I want to be in my life. This will help me grow and set new goals.
Good for you! Keep going…
I am always thinking before I speak (thankfully). Sometimes if you don’t word things the right way it can change the meaning of your message completely. I’m also always telling my kids to think and ask themselves questions first. Hopefully, they take this with them in their adult years.
It is important to learn how we use language. It can help and hurt others.
I love Maya Angelou – she was a gift to the world. Thank you for sharing her beautiful poetry along with other inspirational selections. 🙂
Great article. What are you afraid to ask for/of yourself? is an important question that we all need to ask ourselves for self development.
And a daily self inquiry exercise is key too. 🙂
This is such a helpful post. It’s so true that sometimes we spend a major portion of our lives afraid to ask for help, guidance, a question being reluctant on the unexpected.
Until we ask, we have only half the facts… or less
I love this series! I find on Mondays I really struggle with motivation and this is way better than just a simple quote, more thought provoking! Thank you
Thank you for checking in. What was the takeaway for you on this post?
There would be sooooo many questions I’d need to ask, to so many people. ! guess, yes, their possible reaction might be what holds me back. Or their answer. But yeah, not asking prevents us from moving on so, better to ask, right?
Yes, we are better served when we ask from a place of sincerity. Not provocation.
People are afraid to ask things for some reason, but as I read in your post : you can’t learn if you don’t ask.
We live in a society where asking is considered weak, but that is so not the case.
Really liked the post, more people should read it.
Thank you! That is the hammer that met the nail! You Can’t Learn If You Don’t Ask. Some love the comfort of the failing, antiquated status quo.
You’ve got to the brutal truth. And that’s what I like about this article. Many of us are scared to ask for help and guidance when we lose our way.
True Vinil … and then we blame others when a simple question would have opened new doors to communication.
There are so many factors that lead to why we lie not just to the world but to ourselves. We have insecurities and fears within us. Your post is always inspirational and encouraging. As a woman I relate to the topic discussed.
Fascinating, isn’t it? Even some of the responses I received confirmed that.
Great post, I am also extremely fond of Maya Angelou phenomenal woman and also Rise.. 😊
I so agree with the opening quote. It’s something I try to instill in my children…although I have been guilty of ignoring this myself!
We all fall short sometimes… we pick ourselves up and move forward. 🙂
It is surprisingly difficult for many people to ask. My husband is like that while I am the complete opposite! I’ll ask anyone anything if I think they can help.
Good for you Tania! Perhaps your hubby will learn from you over time..
Just loved the way you have shown!! When I was in school, I used to hide, avoid things but my college life has changed me a lot. There are many things in your blog which I have implemented
Thank you Prateek and I wish you much success in all you do.
I remember when i was younger i was always afraid to ask for what i wanted. I dont know. I just felt i had no right to ask. That i should just take what is given. I’ve done a lot of growing since then and i am definitely not like that more. I speak up now. I go for what I want and I am HAPPY. I really loved reading today’s motivation monday.
Good for you Keisha… so many are not at that place yet. So we need to keep encouraging others to step forward. TY!
Elizabeth, this is so insightful & Inspirational. So many people need this in their lives right now. I just had to share it. Thank you. xoxo
Thank you Hunter… It is my way of looking at the unfolding, unpleasant circumstances around the world.
I like this inspirational post, it hit me to the core. I am a shy person and prefer to be alone most of the time. I may be an introvert but when I like someone, you can really count on me.
It’s tougher for shy people to ask for what they need as they often overcompensate by ensuring everyone else gets their needs met. That is noble but we must not forget to nurture ourselves.
Wow, love the opening quote of this passage – certainly a practice we should all adopt, especially in a world where what we say can go viral in just a few minutes. Love the concept of motivational Mondays – we all need a little extra motivation at the beginning of the week! Keep up the good work.
Thank you BP. I need to update my post as you reminded me of the power of our words to go viral… so we need to clarify our ask too. 🙂
Thanks for the motivation, always. There are things in life that we don’t have the guts to ask. Maybe because of being afraid of failure.
Then because we don’t ask, we fail. Which would you rather have?
Such an important reminder: to carefully think out our words and its consequences. I find myself in regret way too many times for not thinking.
Dear Katrina, let that be and focus on the ask: Why do I find myself going down that path that will lead to regret?
My anxiety takes control of me more often then I’d like to admit, so I tend to be way more reserved and introverted. I hardly voice myself, let alone ask any types of question. I enjoyed reading this! It reminds me that I need to step out of my bubble!
Yes Carrie and you can do it. There is a reason why I included the poem by Maya Angelou. Anyone want to hazard a guess instead of saying how much they love it. Ask why it is included in this post?
This is exactly what my “word” for the year it – Intentional. Doing everything with an intention and conscious (hopefully!).
I think you are onto something good. 🙂
I think that people avoid asking questions to protect themselves from the reality of truth. We create walls to hide our vulnerabilities and we end up avoid asking ourselves who we really are.
Sooooo true!
Wow Phenomenal Woman is amazing! I love every word of it!
As they always say, We should ask or look for ourselves first before telling something is not good to others.
Good point!
I really like the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt. You really capture the essence of ask very well. This reminds me of a phrase I read not long ago “ask and it shall be given”.
Thank you! We gotta ask and act.
This really speaks to me as I find myself afraid to ask for what I want or need at times. I’m getting better but I it’s still a challenge sometimes. I know in the end I’m only holding myself back. But I have to keep pushing past the fear.
First step is recognition… good for you!
“Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid.” Bernard Meltzer If we all (including me) could live by this, I think the world would be a better place.
Definitely…
I think the quote that states it is not fair to ask of others what you cannot do yourself is so true. I have high expectations of myself and naturally others and I should realize that not everyone is the same!
True… we meet others where they are. 😉
I like that… Ask for what you need from life and then step up to meet it. It reminds me of The Secret, a book I read on the power of the mind and focusing and only thinking of the things you are aiming for. Thanks for your wonderful post. I really enjoy reading the motivational tips! Have a great week ahead!
Thank you Cara. I read that book and saw the film. It was fascinating
Asking questions, be it to ourselves or to others who have more knowledge on the subject matter is so important. I had been a very inquisitive child and even as an elder, since i asked so many questions to my mom dad, teachers. This all gave me such a vast clarity of things.
I concur. Asking questions opens our minds and and heart to understanding others better… Clarity comes from asking the right question. 🙂
There are SO many things I’m afraid to ask for myself. My husband tells me all the time that I’m worth much more than I think I am. He’s probably right. It’s a hard mindset to break once it’s been ingrained for so long!
Please work on it Kristen… you are a phenomenal woman but you MUST own it!
Love the Tony Robbins quote. I have been making a point to be clearer about what I want and what I need clarification on. Often people get frustrated over not understanding, not having to help people so it’s important to be very clear on what you want to know.
Exactly. If you don’t ask, how can you expect to get your needs met.
I am great at asking the boys and my husband -just simple How are you and How is the day questions to keep communication open but, I don’t really think to ask myself
Start today to check in with yourself too. It’s a great exercise.
I think we are afraid to ask because we don’t want to “rock the boat” with the other person. We want to keep the peace, so we hold it in until there’s a tipping point & it just comes out. I know I can work at asking for what I need. I try to do this with manifestation. It’s something I’m still working on along with asking for help when I need it. BTW, I love that Maya Angelou poem! One of my favorites.
Great point Samantha, it is fear that gets in the way and to our own detriment.
For the longest time I suffered from The Disease to Please. Somewhere around 40 I decided to change all of that and sought out a conselor to help. One of the hardest things was to start asking others for what I needed instead of always asking how to serve them. Certainly I’ve yet to reach utopia, but I’m a lot further down the road than where I was. x
Good for you and you are still a very helpful person but more purposeful… Exactly.
This reminds me of my grade school math teacher. She wanted to break down the barrier that made kids fear math. She wanted us to know that “The important thing is to never stop questioning (asking)” This rings true for me up to this very day.
Great skill to learn. A lot of people don’t question anything… they believe everything. Does nothing for personal growth or the development of the mind.
I’m falling in love with your blog. My first time here and I can’t stop reading. Thank you for the kind and insightful content.
Thank you for checking in.
If you don’t ask, you won’t receive, that’s for sure. I tell that to my kids and my students too.
So true…
I totally relate to this post. Everything you want also wants you – so so true. I am such an introvert, in the first years of my career, I didn’t grow because I didn’t ask and others moved up ahead because they did. This was a great learning for me.
I always have a problem with asking especially when it comes to asking for help. But it’s so important. I love the poem as well.
Its a fine line. Its true that if you can’t say something nice, just don’t say anything at all! But its also true that lack of communications, kills relationships!
Asking ourselves the hard questions is the key to personal growth. This is a great post!
It’s really important to stay quiet for a second and quickly think how this thing that you are going to say, is going to impact the situation. When I was younger I used to just say anything that came to my mind, but as I grew older I learned how to think before saying.
I love this! I never ask for help. I know that I need to, my mom lives with us and I never ask her for help when I know I should.
Small steps… Start today
Thank you for so much Monday motivation stuff.its hard to do sometimes on a Monday.
I have to ask question about things I do not understand. I can not just go on with out knowing.
It is better to know something by using an effort of asking than you let the opportunity go and leave your thoughts hanging. This is a great post.
Exactly…. miscommunications is harmful.
When I was spending my years working my way up the corporate ladder this is what I would usually tell the newbies in our office. They should learn how to ask and shouldn’t be afraid to ask anything. Anything at all. It’s how we progress and learn.
Still true today…
What a great post for some motivation. Sometimes we have too much pride that we don’t put aside.
I agree with you 100%
Wonderful post! I’m super conflict adverse so I’m usually afraid to ask anything >.>
Try with informational questions. Asking is for our own learning too…
I also have a fear of asking for things. I think my problem is Bering the word no.
I’ve never really been afraid to ask. I feel that asking is the only way to find answers, learn new things and expand your knowledge. For me asking is second nature. I love having that moment of wow when I learn something new!
Same here… If we don’t make the effort , we all perish out of ignorance and fear.
Only if I can be this bold. I would love to chat more with you
What I just need today. A good and meaningful motivation.
🙂
great thoughts on this. I always hesitate to ask for help, but I am always happy to give help if I see someone in need.
Treat yourself to same.
This is a great post that makes you think. I agree with you… sometimes I don’t ask because I’m afraid people will judge me, think that I’m stupid or something.
You are not alone but there are no stupid questions when asked sincerely.
I love that quote from Tony Robbins! I have always been nervous about asking questions. It started in school because I never wanted to seem dumb. Now, I realize how important it is to ask questions and ask them often. Great post!
And it will become a habit. We all ask questions as kids and as we grow up something happens to shut us up… at least some of us. What is it?
I will be honest and admit that I suffer from word vomit, but my word vomit is never mean or attacking. That would be me TRYING to be mean, but I never do that. EVer.
Ok Gigi… Now and again ask how the other person is processing what you are saying.
This is a very inspiring post, thank you. I generally have no trouble asking for what I need, but it took awhile for me to get there!
i agree!
I’ve recently realized how difficult it is for me to ask for help. I’ve made it a mission to become more comfortable asking for help, opinions etc.
Today I am glad I read a phenomenal work…I love poetry and you’ve posted some beautiful poems and my favorite is from Maya Angelou. This is such an inspiring post!
Yes sometimes I always feel afraid or uncomfortable if I could ask for some help . While if someone ask something help , I will be very proud of my self and love to help as much as I can .
It’s such a motivating post , thanks for sharing
Questions are a necessary part of life because there are answers to find and not all is given. We should really ask ourselves a lot of question and seek answer through others and our own initiative.
Exactly… if we don’t ask, we don’t get all the facts.
It’s funny how a simple question could be so difficult to ask. But sometimes we just have to let go of whatever inhibitions and ask.
I’m not sure why. But I realised many of my friends had difficulty opening their mouth to ask or seek for advice. I found this really odd, because I love asking and seeking opinions~
I love to read this post, Honestly I’m so afraid to ask other people for help I don’t know why maybe because I’m afraid if they weren’t able to help me?
This is such a timely post. I’m going through a lot of changes in my life lately, which isn’t entirely bad, but I’m not too certain as to which path to take. I need to ask myself these questions to reassess.
i like the first point…about evading certain things – i never ask for help…ever..i hate it..i avoid it like the plague but every one needs help..i know that…and i am sure someday..i will accept it
I’m always afraid to ask for help but I really do need it! Even for trivial things, I tend to prefer to suffer through it and figure it out than get help from someone else, mostly from embarrassment or maybe my issues of perfectionism. Of course, the same relevant for bigger problems and issues I have. :/
I love the motivating people to ask questions– in a day and age where we constantly want to find answers, we must also find the questions too. Thanks.
I always ask for help.. Even though it does get in the way of my pride, I would rather ask questions than not ask at all.
I love positivity and motivation. I used to be afraid of asking questions because I felt like I should know the answer and not have to ask. Now I ask away, so I can learn and grow.
I love to ask questions, I feel it is very important. I hate the idea of never knowing.
One of my professors in the Management school used to say that “No question is stupid. Always ask whatever is on your mind!” I think that it takes a lot of guts to ask from someone because we fear if that person will judge us!
This is the best motivational message I have ever read… Just what I needed today.
My mother always used to say, if you can’t say a kind word than don’t say any at all. As for asking for help many people struggle with this as they feel they may be refused or judged.
I think many people will ask questions of others, but not of themselves, but, at the moment, with all the horrible events of the world, I think the question we most need to ask is why?
Asking good questions…whether it’s for information or help… it’s so important. Sometimes it’s hard for people to ask each other things, but that’s how we live and learn and grow.
I find this post very useful. I always make myself available for other people but when I need to ask a favour or ask for help I always hesitate.
I am a shy person, but I do not mind asking if I do not understand, be it in class before, at work now. I need to ask about what I have done wrong and how I can make up for it.
We all do need to ask really but, some have been raised to not ask just follow…
We all need to ask question so we can learn all about something we don’t know about. Telling the truth or rather speaking the truth is the only way we learn from something. Eleanor Roosevelt quote I have heard before and have always loved. Thanks for sharing this awesome post.
Growing up, I was always that girl in class asking a million questions because I really wanted to throughly understand the subject. Asking thoughtful questions helped me learn a lot.
This is such a inspiring post! It is true that questions are a necessary part of every day living.By asking questions about each activities and parts of life,it is easy to identify threats or reasons that keep your life without moving!
I’ve never been shy about asking for what I want or want to know. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know or possible receive, right?!?
Everything you want just wait and pray. Be patience.
Thanks for this post. Exactly what’s needed on a rainy Monday morning
I’d rather ask for things that I don’t understand. It is always better to ask and I feel great when I get the answers!
I tend to always ask myself what I need. I always ask what my family needs and what I can do for them. However I am getting better at asking myself what I need and what I need to do to obtain it.
Think before you speak I’ve always lived by these words.
I love this post, it is just what so many people need to hear (including myself!). It’s important to ask for what we want. Most people are excited to help you get where you want to be but how do they know where you are going if you don’t tell them.
I do not always do thing for myself first I always try to do things for other people then I just like doing things for other people.
You are so right, everyone has some or another fear. Either afraid of losing someone, Afraid of loving, Afraid of asking for help, afraid of facing reality.
Whenever i ready your post I relate it with my life, it feels you are writing about me.
It’s time to face our fears and accept it and try to overcome it.
Motivation on Mondays is a must. I will need to tag this site to come back weekly.
That is a good question to…ask! I dont know why? It is strange when thinkinf of it. My husband hates asking for direction (why does the men hate that and not women?). And I do hate to ask someone for dinner ect in fear of being rejected so I prefer sending a text so it is easier to deal with it.
This article was an excellent one for me to read. I have been having trouble figuring out how I can stop judging others, although they don’t even know it, it bothers me still. Who wants to have the negativity in their thoughts? My answer was to think of an explanation they may have for whatever the judgement is. For an example I seen a lady with a baby and no socks or shoes yet she was dressed warmly. My final answer was maybe he had gotten them wet. Far better than the judgement that was racing through my head. I hope you understood this.
I totally get it. We all judge from time to time and it is good to remind ourselves that we don’t know the whole story … yet.
