This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it. Earthday.org

46 years ago, a highly motivated movement launched the Earth Day Network as an urgent call to action to address the many environmental issues that were slowly but surely decimating our planet. This year, for Earth Day 2016, the theme is Trees for the Earth, and the goal is to plant 7.8 billion of them.  Trees help the environment by reducing pollutants and slowing climate change. Is it feasible? Sure. If we all do our part, we can achieve anything.  On Friday, April 22, we will gather at different venues around the world to celebrate Earth Day and remember that, for our collective survival, we must protect and nurture our Earth by reducing our carbon footprint and increasing plant life that purifies our atmosphere. When we take actions that sustain our planet, and remind our friends and family to be more mindful of how they use our natural resources, we perform a powerful act.

Did you know that 20 million people responded to that first call to action? Did you know that the effort bore fruit by leading to the passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and other shape-shifting environmental laws? So, don’t believe the naysayers who think the actions of a few can’t effect change. It can, because when our hearts and minds agree that our actions can make a difference, we can move mountains. When we spread the word, we remind ourselves and others that we benefit from Mother Earth’s largess and that maintaining a sustainable, pollution-free environment is a crucial legacy to leave our children. Keeping our planet thriving is vital to our survival, too. I don’t want my children to inherit a futuristic, toxic world with no trees and little animal life. However, if we continue to abuse our Earth, we will soon find ourselves living in a gas-filled world with masks and steel as our daily companions.

As Earth Day approaches this Friday, I can’t help but think of the many ways each of us contributes to sustaining or destroying our environment. We act both consciously and unconsciously, discarding our garbage carelessly and adding our share of toxic waste to Mother Earth. The EPA covers several key areas where our actions exacerbate environmental concerns, so we can all do better. Instead of giving you a shopping list of Dos and Don’ts, I invite you to take some time over the coming days and weeks to explore the key areas the EPA addresses. Knowledge is power, and an educated populace can make a difference. Arm yourself with the facts, then choose to do what makes a difference in your household.

Living Green is becoming ubiquitous, and each of us can do it without incurring huge costs. Our actions affect our planet, so any way we can live green gets a thumbs up. Are you living green?
Did you know that without health and safety regulations, environmental hazards can pose a huge threat to our lives? Learn how to stay healthy and safe.
As much as we enjoy the beautiful landscapes around us, we still need to stay informed about land and cleanup issues that occur when toxins are spilled into our sewage and streams or dumped into our oceans. Such pollutants can have long-lasting impacts on our land.
By now, we all know about the hazards of pesticides in our food, water, air, and homes. We must educate ourselves to ensure our kids aren’t exposed to high levels of dangerous toxins and pesticides…
Do you know how to manage your waste and protect your water supply? Everything we do creates waste, and we must learn safe, practical ways to dispose of it. Motivation Mondays: EARTH DAY – All we love about our earth and our trees

Everything is connected. Connectivity is going to be the key to addressing these issues, like contaminants and climate change. They’re not just about contaminants on your plate. They’re not just about the ice depleting. They’re about the issue of humanity. Today is also Patriot’s Day, which marks the first battle for liberty and union in the American Revolutionary War. When I think of this day and the battle to protect our planet, I can see a symbolic connection. At different points in our lives, we are called to stand up for what we believe and what we can no longer tolerate. We can stand for something that unites us and pulls us toward growth and good, or we can sit back and watch everything around us perish.     Earth Day is a great time to remind us to take care of this planet we live on. I received an email from a nail polish brand about sending in my less nature nail polish brands in exchange for more earth friendly. It’s a small think, but a little thing makes a big difference.

    It’s absolutely astonishing that, with all the science that’s been published, there are still people who think climate change is not real. One of the reasonable questions has to do with how much is because of “us” and how much just the natural cycle of climate. Still, the fact that this subject has become a political football of sorts really is surprising. Arbor Day was celebrated in my own elementary days, and we would plant a tree. I love Earth Day now and do something to acknowledge it each year. In fact, when a loved one passes away, my husband and I often use a service that plants a memorial tree of group of trees in their memory. Which is a unique way to remember the dead and contribute to the environment.

    I love to be eco friendly.. but hate when people act like global warming is a lie.. they say they worry but always throw the garbage in the floor. Get so Angry! Thats why i love post like this that raise awareness

    It’s so true that when people talk about how we are “destroying the planet” it is really destroying it for US. We need such perfect conditions to survive! It is even more troubling that so many other species are dependent upon the same condition. But the planet is its own entity and certainly does not seem to need us to survive or thrive.

    My family and I have a long time ago given our full support to effort to preserve and sustain our environment. In our own little way, we have organized our household such that we are able to minimize our carbon footprints and help protect the earth. Global warming is real and has started to beset the world we live in but if each of us does his or her own share in combatting this , I think the collective effort can and will still produce positive and lasting effects on our environment.

    My family and I have started doing our share in sustaining the earth such that we have organized our household in such a way that we minimize our carbon footprints. Global warming is real and is really starting to affect us. I believe that if each of us does his or her own share in creating a pollution free world, the collective effort this produces will greatly help in nurturing our environment.

    Here is Norway they are very green minded. They have like 6 different trash bags depending on what you are throwing away. For plastics bottles for cokes and beers and such you can return them to the store for 1 kroner a piece. These little things definitely make a difference.

    We hardly use plastic bags in my community. Instead of plastic bags for the groceries, we use eco bags which can be used over and over again.

    Evo Morales is absolutely right. My children have a better understanding of this than many adults I know. We’re more active so we’re not burning as much Gas or Electricity as we used to. They clean and recycle more too. They love Earth Day and look forward to it every year!

    I like how they change it from “global warming” to “climate change” because they can never get it right! We we taught in school about the coming ice age that should have been happening now! I am so glad things are cleaner now in the US than they were just a few years ago, I hope other countries do the same!

    Earth Day is a great day to highlight the cause. Unfortunately for most it’s just one day. Knowledge is power – I totally agree. Ignorance is rejection of facts and for most, ignorance is too easy to pass up. I love the effort made here in Ireland on Earth Day each year. They really get the kids involved with different school programs/events.

    The earth is infinite, yet most generations may find it not as nourishing, as this generation is dong its best to concrete everything, so much waste so much beauty dessimated. Yet I know that with one step at a time we can clean up and keep it going. Thanks for this article!

    This is great information. I truly believe knowledge is power. I am slowly, but surely, trying to play my role in helping the environment. I want to learn how to garden and build a compost bin, which I know is helpful. I also want to plant some trees in my yard, so hopefully that will help. Oh, and I love the quote at the beginning of this post. So true!

    I’m so glad we startd making these changes way back then. I can’t imagine the way the earth would be if we never did. I do believe any little bit helps, and we need to constantly think of new and innovative ideas to help reduce waste and preserve energy or turn waste into energy.

    I know when it comes to being green and helping Mother Earth a lot of people are on board; from recycling to donating to charity to earth-friendly projects, there’s a lot of awareness going on. Sadly it’s not enough though. I’m hoping in the coming years the newer generations will take the reins and step things up quite a bit!

    We were talking about this today when we saw people walking carrying umbrellas in the desert sun. We were referring to Oriental places where people wear masks, and mentioning we hope that doesn’t happen here. But gee, the way we are not taking care of our Mother Earth, and since the Good Lord ain’t making any more, I hope we can learn to take better care of her.

    Climate change is real! We can feel every minute of it this summer here. We live in a building in one of the most developed cities in Manila, sadly we don’t have soil to plant on. But we plan to do a little pots and plant blox gardening until we can transfer them to good soil.

    I had no idea that many people responded to Earth Day. We try to do a lot of things to help the environment like cloth diaper, recycle, breastfeed all of our children and reuse as much as possible. I work hard to keep our recycle bin more full than the trash can.

    I try to minimize our carbon footprint by re-using plastic bags and opting for boxes at the grocery store or using eco bags that I already own. And we don’t buy bottled water as often as before. We just bring our reusable bottles whenever we go out that is already filled with water. I really hope that helps even just a little bit.

    Beautiful photos and beautiful way to think of earth. We really do owe it to the earth to do whatever we can to put less strain on it.

    Good to know that the focus of Earth Day 2016 is about TREES. I am very sad to find a lot of people just carelessly cutting and even burning entire forests just for their selfish greed. These are really heartless people.

    Thank you for this.I’m now more conscious at how we live and dying to participate in a tree-planting activity somewhere. We currently live in a building in the middle of a city. We’ve been thinking of having some plant boxes around here then transferring them on soil when we move again to a house with a yard. Ugh,climate change is real! We’re feeling it this summer here.

    Climate change is really getting worse. I think the earthquakes that occured last few days was also effects of climate change. We have to take of mother nature. My birthday falls on Earth Day too, that is why this day is so special to me.

    I didn’t realize Earth Day was coming up. A small part of my MPH program has been dedicated to environmental health and I was shocked to learn the rate at which we are destroying the planet. There are so many little things we can all do to make a huge impact!

    I wasn’t aware of Earth Day which probably highlights that I have a long way to go to being more mindful about what I do. We have recently moved to Italy and are now far more conscious of our recycling then we were in the UK and have started to do everything on our bikes rather than go by car. It is making us think far more about what we need and do that’s for sure.

    Elizabeth, many a times the biggest trouble is the maintenance. Planting trees happens easily, but its protection from people who chop them off doesn’t happen!!! That’s the more difficult part…

    Earth Day is such a great reminder for everyone of us that we all have the responsibility to do something to make sure to save the environment. Living green is the best way to deal with it, so we can all make sure our next generation would have a good safer environment to love with.

    It’s a shame when you realize what people do to our home. I always make sure to do my part because this is not only my home, it’s our home…animals and other living things included.

    I love the theme this year, about planting more trees. The carbon footprints we currently leave are still alarmingly increasing, and more tress would help lower that, and help save Mother Earth.

    I’ve been trying to coax everyone I know into planting trees this spring before it’s too late. I want my grand kids and their grand kids to enjoy the beauty of our world but with so many environmental issues, it’s discouraging to think of what our planet will be like when my grand kids have grand kids .

    With the present El Nino phenomenon really experienced in Zamboanga City, we cannot help but think of climate change. The effects have really taken its toll… bush fires, brown and parched farmlands, therefore, poor farmers and of course, all the end users! Now, i have to think, what can I really contribute to Earth Day this year?!?

    Sometimes, I can’t help but think that time will come that our Earth will no longer a livable place. So we better start preserving and saving Earth now or we’ll regret it in the very near future. We should start at home and teach our kids on how we can save our environment agains pollution, garbage and other elements that contributes to Earth’s destruction. Happy Earth Day!
