In morals, theosophy builds its teachings on unity, seeing in each form the expression of a common life, and therefore the fact that what injures one injures all. To do evil i.e., to throw poison into the life-blood of humanity, is a crime against the unity. Annie Besant
What does UNITY mean to you? With the Summer Olympics in Rio, Friendship Day, Sisters Day, and International Forgiveness Day around the corner, I can’t help but think about the power and importance of Unity. Unity takes a strong team, a strong family, and a strong nation. When we work together to achieve a community or team goal, the unity we develop and share carries into our lives and our interactions with others. Some folks like to believe the self-made man is a powerful idea, but it is merely a concept used by people who have forgotten that no one can create success in a vacuum. We need the support of people who believe in our vision and are ready, willing, and able to help us achieve it. We see moments of unity in our everyday lives. We look for our families, and they help us clean up; that is unity. When we help a co-worker finish a task to meet a deadline, that is unity. When we help a stranger in need and follow up with calls to friends/family who are ailing, that is unity. All the service providers who work behind the scenes to make our travel, shopping, health, and even family experiences smooth and bearable do their work to make each of us feel the unity and comfort we feel when we visit a particular location.
In the same way, we can develop a spirit of unity in our interactions with others by serving those in need, staying involved in our communities, and expressing gratitude for what we have accomplished. Last Sunday, my pastor said something that resonated with my spirit. He said that we need to develop a spirit of daily gratitude. If we commit to expressing gratitude for 3 good things in our lives every day, we will see a shift in our interactions and mindset. Are you expressive and grateful for the support others give you? Are you a team-player who includes others and sings their praises? We can all find a path to that gateway and start appreciating the common unity we all share in this world. Frankly, unity and love sustain our planet and keep us committed to improving the lot of the world in need. Without a spirit of unity, we can’t achieve much. We need the synergy that comes from collaboration and teamwork to get things done.
A STORY: UNITY IN FRIENDSHIP
A long time ago in China, there were two friends: one who played the harp skilfully and one who listened skilfully. When the one played or sang about a mountain, the other would say: “I can see the mountain before us.” When the one played about water, the listener would exclaim: “Here is the running stream!”
But the listener fell sick and died. The first friend cut the strings of his harp and never played again. Since then, cutting harp strings has always been a sign of intimate friendship. Source: Zen Flesh, Zen Bones

Motivation Mondays: UNITY – Begins with us…
I’ve always seen the Olympics as a place where you could act out your differences on the athletic field with a sense of sportsmanship and fairness and mutual respect. Andrew Young
We talk a lot about hope, helping, and teamwork. Our whole message is that we are more powerful together. Victoria Osteen
Do you know how UNITY operates in this World? It operates through the effort we make to help others and the actions we take to stop the negative change in the world around us. When we embrace others where they are and stop casting stones, we begin to see the humanity inside of them, and that light shines on us too. Whenever I find myself viewing the world and my fellow humans through a narrow, dark lens, it affects me too. As the stories I share above and below can confirm, we can rise above our own small needs to become expansive and inclusive of others. When we develop a team vision, it blossoms in a way that benefits us and those around us. Try it. Instead of making assumptions about each other in the first meeting, try viewing the other person as a member of your team. View them through the lens of brotherhood/sisterhood and then connect with them from that place and see what transpires. Will you try it? Sure, there are times we don’t feel like it, but we can try it from time to time.
This morning, at my local Bed, Bath & Beyond, an elderly lady waved me over to help her. I wasn’t sure what she needed, but I approached her anyway. She explained that because she had broken her wrist in a recent fall, she was having a hard time putting her car in the right gear. She wanted me to back her car out of the tight spot in the parking lot, and I gladly complied. It was a tight fit because, being a petite lady, she had her seat close to the steering wheel. I helped her; she thanked me, and we both left the lot feeling good about the exchange. In that moment, we were united in our shared humanity and our common desire to accomplish a task. We can bring the same Motivation to all we do for our loved ones and for strangers too. It takes a willingness to see others as team members who aid our success, not just competitors who want to destroy us. We can develop this expansive vision even as we work to win our gold medals and celebrate our victories… Give that approach a try and see how much of a shift you will experience in achieving your daily goals.
A STORY: UNITY IN UNDERSTANDING
The Zen Master Hoshin lived in China for many years. Then he returned to northeastern Japan, where he taught his disciples. When he was getting very old, he told them a story he had heard in China.
This is the story: One year on the twenty-fifth of December, Tokufu, who was very old, said to his disciples: “I am not going to be alive next year, so you fellows should treat me well this year.”
The pupils thought he was joking, but since he was a great-hearted teacher, each of them, in turn, treated him to a feast on succeeding days of the departing year. On the eve of the new year, Tokufu concluded: “You have been good to me. I shall leave tomorrow afternoon when the snow has stopped.”
The disciples laughed, thinking he was aging and talking nonsense since the night was clear and without snow. But at midnight snow began to fall, and the next day they did not find their teacher about. They went to the meditation hall. There he had passed on.
Hoshin, who related this story, told his disciples: “It is not necessary for a Zen master to predict his passing, but if he really wishes to do so, he can.”
“Can you?” someone asked.
“Yes,” answered Hoshin. “I will show you what I can do seven days from now.” None of the disciples believed him, and most of them had even forgotten the conversation when Hoshin called them together.
“Seven days ago,” he remarked, “I said I was going to leave you. It is customary to write a farewell poem, but I am neither a poet nor a calligrapher. Let one of you inscribe my last words.”
His followers thought he was joking, but one of them started to write.
“Are you ready?” Hoshin asked.
“Yes, sir,” replied the writer. Hoshin dictated:
I came from brilliancy
And return to brilliancy.
What is this? This line was written one line short of the customary four, so the disciple said: “Master, we are one line short.” Hoshin, with the roar of a conquering lion, shouted “Kaa!” and was gone. Source: Zen Stories

Motivation Mondays: UNITY – Begins with us…
You don’t get unity by ignoring the questions that have to be faced. Jay Weatherill
The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety. Felix Mendelssohn
How can we work to develop a spirit of unity in all we do? Start where you are. Offer help without judgment. See the greatness in others and lift them. Take a chance on life and be grateful. When we consider that planet Earth is sustained by the unity between the seasons, people, nature, animals, cultures, and all forms of energy that keep it going, we can begin to understand the richness of our presence on this planet. From the time we take our first breath at birth to the day we take our last breath in death, we are in constant contact with others who assist us and help us complete actions we take to complete even ordinary tasks. If we can take a moment to show our appreciation for everything/everyone in our lives, and see the helpful connections that make our lives easy, we will understand the importance of developing a spirit of unity globally. But it must come from ALL of us. When people feel disenfranchised, disconnected, and fragmented in the communities they inhabit, it is hard to see the value in unity. But we must take that leap for ourcommunity’sy survival and for global peace.
A STORY: Snowflakes
“Tell me the value of a snowflake,” a coal-mouse asked a wild dove.
“Nothing more than nothing,” was the answer.
“In that case, I must tell you a marvelous story,” the coal-mouse said.
“I sat on the branch of a fir, close to its trunk, when it began to snow – not heavily, not in a raging blizzard – no, just like a dream, without a sound and without any violence. Since I did not have anything better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs and needles of my branch. Their number was exactly 3,741,952. When the 3,741,953rd dropped onto the branch – nothing more than nothing, as you say – the branch broke off.”
Having said that, the coal-mouse flew away. Source: Zen Stories

I thought this was a wonderful post. I never really thought about unity. I think it’s great to be able to help others out and you feel great about yourself after. With all that’s been going on lately, it’s important to help everyone out.
We could all use a little unity in our lives these days. Coming together for a good cause or just to spend some quality time with a friend can open your eyes.
Elizabeth I always adore your write-up. Nothing else makes the world a living place if not unity. Everything can be achieved if there is Unity. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of work
Wow, what an amazing post! Unity and appreciation! I love the idea of being grateful for 3 things everyday and the story of cutting harp strings is new to me.
With everything that’s happening now around the world especially in my area and the Arab World, it’s hard to remember that we need to stick together in order to fight back and win.
Thank you for reminding us.

That story about two friends are really interesting. I can’t imagine my life without loyal friends. unity is a powerful tool to keep our relationship stronger.
Yes, having a team vision is surely the ideal but we do fall short, as humans and as a society. But it really would make for a better world if we all acted as if unity were our mission.
When I read anympost that concerna unity one thing comes to mind… the hungry kids on the street, i pray the world unites for their sake. Thanks for this post and for remireminding me of alot.
Your post reminds me of the concept of African Ubuntu. The Spirit of Ubuntu says you are who you are because of your interaction with the community around you, if the community thrives then you will thrive.
Thanks so much for the wishes of a productive, unity rich, inspired, and gratitude filled happy week. Hope your week is equally as amazing as I plan to help make mine.
Beautiful post and such a powerful message. Selfless acts like helping the lady with her car go a long way in unifying everyone together. I also wake the feel grateful for many things (even on bad days) The snowflake story has a lovely interprative message.
With all the societal movement towards separation, we could all take a few words & inspiration from you regarding unity. We should strive to build and foster together, instead of finding ways to separate ourselves as a people.
I love the story at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I love hearing people helping people, even if it is something that seems so trivial. We all need to UNITE as human beings!
Unity is what our country was founded upon. After all we are the UNITED States of America, right? We should all stand together against the evils of the world. That would be real unity.
With the Olympics it such a great time to have this discussion. It baffles me how divided we can be then sports or entertainment occurs and we all come together for minor reasons as opposed to the major ones
awww – i really enjoyed reading this- and how you helped that lady at bed bath and beyond 🙂 It beautiful to be able to trust others and live in unity like that!
I love this! Unity is so important and it is all around us. It is up to us to embrace it and pour into the relationships that surround us in our communities and the world.
It seems you find unity in hard situations, family and sometimes in places of work. It is nice to see it sometimes you wonder how hard would it really be if people would set aside their differences and unite. Wouldn’t that be great?
Unity is a powerful thing! I love it when my team at work just gets it and we all work well together. Just makes the work environment so much better! The story of the harp strings is pretty interesting!
Awww, I’m just picturing that old lady and how long she must have been sitting in that parking lot. I’m sure you made her day and she was so grateful that you helped her.
Unity is the strength of any community & without unity the world can never move in a positive direction anytime. The pictures are simple yet beautiful to relate & that quote from Publilius Syrus is quiet awesome & true that victory is always on the cards when there is unity!
I read with interest your legend about the two friends and their connection of the harp and listening. Cutting the harp strings means having a very close friendship. What a sad legend.
That’s very sweet of you to help that lady with her car 🙂 And I think that’s really what unity is – just getting along and treating each other like how you want to be treated.
Being in Unity is the essence of life. It’s no doubt it foster growth, bonding and love in all aspects of humanity regardless of the challenges, or race we belong or associated with. It pays to be united. As the saying goes, “United we stand, divided we fall”.
Unity–when one is united towards a common goal with at least one other. That is what it means to me and I think to you as well. Now if we could get all people to unite in friendship around the world and help one another–what a wonderful world it would be.
Unity is a strong and beautiful word. I see friendship and family. Even coming together as people. I haven’t seen that lately. Especially around the world. A lot of hurting and hate spreading and hoping the world can get better.
In every family, community, workplace, and relationship, there must be unity for people to stay together with harmony. It becomes a challenge to work with differences however we must learn to be committed to a certain goal so we can adjust and adapt with them in a cool manner.
I feel most connected to my community and the world at large when I am serving others. Considering the upcoming Olympics, it is a great time to be united.
I really believe that if everyone would take the time they waste in judging others and use it to improve on themselves their would be so much more unity among people. Time is so precious as is life and we only get one chance to help make a difference.

Just being motivated any day of the week is great but for me, Monday’s seem to be the worse. Thank you for posting this enlighting post to get me going!
In life if we strive to be a better version of who we were yesterday, With an attitude of gratitude, always appreciating others where they are, then I reckon we would be considered good sports! A really deep article, one I would like to revisit 🙂 Thanks Eliza!
Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved – I totally agree! Specially when you are working as a team. Teamwork is really important. Unity will keep your team working to achieve every task given to you.
Yay for another motivational post. Unity is the key to anything! Even if you’re smart, organized and the like and the people who surround you is opposite it’s just a waste and effortless. I so agree with you! Yeah start where you are and what you have!
I haven’t heard of the Chinese story of the harp and listener. From what I heard, cutting of the strings usually mean the end of a friendship. But it’s still an interesting story!
I hope everyone in the world reads your blog, it;s so motivational and if everyone thinks like you then the world would be so much better place to live. Salute!
Unity it what keeps us from being progressive. In the Philippines, this is what we are looking forward to working out, to be united against drugs. I just hope that we will achieve the goal of cleaning the country from this substance.
I need a Motivarion Monday! Now when the Olympics are on it’s a great time to think about unity and what we could do to become closer to one another and understand different cultures more.
Unity is definitely strength. Unity is what is required for a better world. Strong unity builds a strong family, community ,town etc. However, for unity to work all must play their part.
There is a saying, that united we can change the world and make it a better place. Unity comes in different forms and shapes, comes in helping each other and in understanding one another.
Unity is something we people should work on more. There are plenty of things we need to resolve and work together on to help the world become a better place. There are tons of things you can accomplish if each and everyone of us is united.
Enjoyed your stories! Unity is so important. How nice to help out the elderly lady in the parking lot! I hate backing out of tight spaces!

The people of our planet MUST unite to survive.
It is imperative.
‘United we stand….’ we need a leader who has a sole goal : UNITE. But we must also have an electorate who will drop petty differences at the door!
We could all use a little unity in our lives these days. Coming together for a good cause or just to spend some quality time with a friend can open your eyes.

I definitely think it’s important to work together. A lot of big tasks can’t be accomplished alone.
I think it was really sweet of you to back up the car of a stranger. We need more unity in our world, that’s for sure, and compassion.
The world would be a better place if all its people united as one putting all differences of caste, colour, creed, religion aside.
Unity is very powerful.. Many things can be done if we unite.. But it’s pretty hard to get everyone to the state of unity..
Unity is very powerful, if we all become united in one goal then our world will be more peaceful to live with.
I do enjoy reading your inspiring posts. Motivation Mondays are great for jump-starting the week.
