There’s a lot that’s been done by and for women and girls, but there’s still plenty to do. Convened by the White House, this Summit will rally all of us together to celebrate what we’ve achieved, and how we’re going to take action moving forward. Covering key gender equality issues, we’ll make a powerful difference in our collective future. theunitedstateofwomen.org

Empowering Girls/Women Globally: Are you ready to stand with us at the #StateOfWomen Summit? In a world where women carry half the sky, we earn less than men, suffer daily indignities because of our gender, and, in some parts of the world, we are denied educational opportunities. In contrast, child brides, violence against women, and female circumcision (FGM) remain ubiquitous. If we want to do something in our lifetime, fighting for gender parity should be on our top ten list. Did you know that 1 in 3 women will experience violence in her lifetime? Did you know that 62 million girls lack access to school globally? Did you know that even with the passing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which President Obama signed so women can recover wages lost to pay discrimination, we earn 79 cents to every dollar a man earns in the USA? In some other parts of the world, the figures are abysmal. While the gender pay gap has narrowed slightly in the US, the same isn’t true worldwide. What can we do about it? Get involved. Be proactive. Win the support of other women and men. Connect the dots and get informed.

When we consider the key issues affecting women today, we can agree that we need more effort to achieve parity through Economic Empowerment, Health & Wellness, Educational Opportunity, Ending Violence Against Women, Encouraging Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and furthering our roles in Leadership & Civic Engagement. Did you know that women and children make up the largest number of victims in human trafficking today? This violation of our human rights remains a growing problem, and we need a stronger legislative voice to ensure our leaders stop it. How do we give voice to our gender while honoring our collective contributions? How do we achieve gender parity? On June 14-15, the United States of Women Summit will meet in Washington, DC, to address these and many other questions. Motivation Mondays: United State Of Women Summit – #StateofWomen


Liesl Gerntholtz: The State of Women’s Rights

The United State of Women will be an important moment for both women and girls, domestically and internationally. It will feature speakers who will both educate as well as inspire all of us to take action on June 14th and well after. Summit check in will begin at 6:30 am (EST) with programming running from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm on the 14th. There will then be additional events throughout the following day, June 15th, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at various times. How can we impact the #StateOfWomen globally? Every time I read yet another report of an act of violence against a woman, a statistical report about our disadvantages, or data on other atrocities committed against our gender, it reminds me to keep up my effort and support organizations that work to empower women’s lives. It reminds me to share information on those groups that initiate legislation and write reports that effect change. Sitting on the sidelines feeling disempowered will not bring about change. We don’t have to be the next Malala or start a movement if we are not inclined, but we can all make an incremental difference by taking action in our homes, jobs, and communities. Did you know that 44 million Americans – about 40 percent of the workforce – cannot earn paid sick leave? Many of them are poor, underemployed women, and we can change this situation by our actions. As a mother of two young women, I want them to inherit a world that doesn’t judge them by their gender but by their character and work ethic. So that desire motivates me to keep talking about why women’s lives matter.
Did you know that women own 29% of businesses in the US today? While that is a small number, it still means we can hire and mentor other women and girls. When we mentor a young woman and help her believe her dreams are viable, we plant a seed of empowerment. When we hire and pay female and male employees equitably, we are changing the dismal state of pay equity concerns. When we reach out and connect with women from other cultures, listen to their stories, and encourage them in any way we can, we actively change the lives of women around the world. Whether we engage other women in a playful or serious situation, we can all do more by building friendships and cultural understanding. To empower our daughters and ourselves, we must be honest about these inequities and remember that the glass ceiling remains a reality for many women globally. Yes, some of us are homeowners, community leaders, and active participants in sustaining our nations’ economies through our efforts, but how can we drive change so more of us can enjoy the fruits of our labor?

    The U.S. still has some huge issues with inequality. I think education plays a big part in getting rid of these inequalities.

    You’ve brought out all the shocking statistics that prove how much further women have to go before there is true equality. Having marched in (a fruitless) ERA parade in 1975 in Florida, I can’t believe we are still facing this kind of imbalance. But, we are.

    I think more countries now are considering the value of women in the society. However, there are still many that treat women as the lower gender type. It’s sad to think that women are regarded as slaves and are sold for money.

    I’m all about supporting organizations that work to empower women’s lives. My heart breaks every time I hear stories about a woman being abused or when a girl is not given an opportunity to learn simply because she happens to be a girl.

    It amazes me that in this day and age, there is still such inequality on these various issues between women and men. As a doctoral candidate who will have an EdD degree by this fall, I would hope I can earn as much as a man with the same degree, given such a small percentage (something 2%) of the population earn doctoral degrees. But maybe that’s naive thinking!

    Women really rule! We had a mayor who is a girl and she really exhibited girl power. She punched a corrupt official. But I don’t think it was proper. Still, girls rule!

    As a working woman and as someone who has a daughter in the workforce, it is important to me that women are paid as equally as men in the same position. An individuals pay should be based on their experience not their gender.

    This is so timely because of the BrockTurner Stanford rape case decision. The powerful statement/letter from the victim really moved me, and the short sentence of the suspect is an injustice.

    As I always say, women always share love (even when mommy dogs breast feed tigers and leopard takes care of little baboon) and men are always territorial (head of a lion pride or stray dogs)… With women atop, the world would be definitely more peaceful…

    It upsets me that so many women are abused, cat called or get slinged through the mud. When a woman is in power society hates them and when a couple break up the woman is blamed. It is a sad state of affairs.

    I believe women can do great things and can be a great asset to their families and their communities. I don’t think we need to unite together to achieve this. It is something each of us should strive to do for ourselves. I hope all women realize their worth and potential even if they don’t have any support. We can all do great things, we just have to get busy doing it!

    It’s wonderful when influential women work hard to make a difference. Every little (and big) thing surely propels the cause further…it’s making a difference to someone somewhere to see people caring about the advancement of women (in many areas).

    The first thing women need to do is stop tearing each down and instead support them. Women can often be quick to judge and we many times end up hurting each other. If women would support each other and help each other great things could be accomplished.

    I have always done my best to help support other women. The blogging community has been amazing.

    Women’s rights have come a long way but there are still some discrimination going on. Especially, women of child bearing age. We shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting/needing 6 or more weeks off to bond with the baby.

    There is so many other things but women are forging forward and changing things for future women.

    It seems we have been fighting for woman’s equality all my life–and still there is a long way to go!! When I heard that Hiilary put a major crack in the glass ceiling by even running for President that we in the US still face–a smile immediately formed on my face–I hope that in my lifetime I will see a female President of the US and the rise of woman kind in the rest of the world/

    I am so glad you talk about these issues. Here in Norway the divide is much smaller than it was in the United States and I am glad for that. Here I am more on equal ground. I think it is so important that we help women all over but I think it is even more important for us to educate the young boys in our family so they develop different ideals of the women in their lives.

    This is a great initiative! Women should have equal rights as men. We are hard-working, responsable, intelligent and strong! Don’t let men manipulate us! Love how you said “When we come together as one voice, we can move mountains” and how Michelle Obama said “Together, we are stronger. Together we can change tomorrow.” These should be our motto in life!

    As a social worker, I’ve already encountered numerous stories of violence against women. It was devastating. It is great that nowadays a lot of women are becoming more aware of their rights. However there are still many who needs help.

    It is so sad to hear that 62 million girls can’t go to school. We should have some government funded all girls school so we can empower them to be at their best!

    In this time and age, discrimination against women should no longer exist. I’m really grateful that there are organizations today that help empower women. I look forward to the day when women, regardless of economic and educational status, are treated the same as men.

    I have read this book, Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg where she encourage women to support other women. The statistics she presented was eye-opening for me. -katrina centeno

    I hope that if this baby is a girl, I can raise her to be a strong, confident woman. I know I struggled a lot because my mom didn’t always give me the best tools, so I am hopeful I can show her how able she is!

    We are lucky we’re live in a country that observes gender equality and empowers women. Unfortunately, there are still other countries who don’t do that. I hope they will start changing their cultures and give more empowerment on their women.

    I believe that women today are stronger and more confident. Though we can’t deny that there are so many violations of women’s right. I hope that the government can protect by creating and strengthening laws against women’s abuse.
