Motivation MONDAYS: Authors & Books From Around The World
Do you know how many countries make up our world? Recently, I was scrolling through the Internet when my eyes fell on a post listing books from around the world. It wasn’t a complete or comprehensive list, but it got my mind ticking. Any time I am stuck at home in bed, I love to find books to read or look through my files for something that would keep me captivated for a few hours. The list gave me the idea for this post and, believe me, it hasn’t been an easy task.
As I went digging for information, I quickly found out that it wasn’t so simple. Why? Because there are 193 official countries and 195 countries recognized by UN members: Vatican City and Palestine. If you add to that number the so-called dependent territories or non-sovereign states, the number jumps quickly to 195+28. However, the exact count can vary between 193 and 205 depending on political recognition and how a country or territory is defined.
Political land grabs and complicated designations aside, I plan to introduce you to as many male and female authors from nations around the globe. The list will be made up of authors from the countries listed and one of their books, so keep in mind this is NOT, unless noted due to reasons out of my control, a list of books written by non-natives about another part of the world. I am curating my list in real time to find one popular male and one popular female author from as many parts of the world as possible, and to add their names and books next to their country.
Please keep in mind that since this will only accommodate 1 of each, I can’t include all the wonderful authors you’d like to see on the list. Above and below, I have added a **working country-by-country list** rather than a definitive literary canon. I selected a prominent male and female literary figure where possible. For countries with smaller publishing traditions, I included poets, memoirists, playwrights, oral historians, some diaspora authors, or writers strongly identified with the country.
Bruneian literature is published primarily in Malay, and English translations may be difficult to obtain. So the list might not accurately reflect some in-country local writers, but rather those who have garnered fame outside their homeland yet write about it.
If you look at the list above, you’ll notice that a familiar East Asian nation is missing. Can you guess? Yes. It’s Taiwan. So, take Taiwan, for example: the United Nations considers it a state represented by the People’s Republic of China, but it doesn’t see itself in that light.
Another example is the Cook Islands and Niue: both states are in free association with New Zealand and are members of several UN specialized agencies. They have been recognized as having “full treaty-making capacity,” but neither of them is a member state nor a non-member observer state. Let’s say it is complicated. Why am I doing this again? Motivation MONDAYS: Authors & Books From Around The World: If we avoid the sticky situation of exact numbers and stand with the currently listed 195 countries in the world, here is the breakdown of what we have. I have spared you the headache of having to sort them into their subregions and so forth. It took me a long time, but I saw the gift in the exercise. I get to revisit World Geography and refresh my memory of which countries belong where. That part was refreshing; have a go at it.
I must add that the hardest countries to document confidently in English are **North Korea, Maldives, Laos, Brunei, Bahrain, Qatar, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan**. For those, national-language bibliographies may produce stronger choices than English-language searches. UNESCO’s regional materials also distinguish these smaller national publishing environments within the broader Asian subregions. (UNESCO Document Archive) It’s understandable that, given the political and cultural differences around the world, curating books by local authors is fraught with complexities and challenges that vary from continent to continent.
