Motivation Mondays: Ship Happens
I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship. Louisa May Alcott
If my ship sails from sight, it doesn’t mean my journey ends, it simply means the river bends. Enoch Powell
Inspiration is one thing and you can’t control it, but hard work is what keeps the ship moving. Good luck means, work hard. Keep up the good work. Kevin Eubanks
Ship Happens: No matter who you are or what your belief system is, at some point in your life, ship happens. How do you move on? What are the ways to press forward and the lessons learned? Come back for more!
It Comes in Every Storm by Olga Orozco (translated by Mary Crow)
And don’t you feel also, perhaps, a stormy sorrow on the skin of time,
like a scar that opens again
there where the sky was uprooted?
And don’t you feel sometimes how that night gathers its tatters into an ominous bird,
that there’s a beating of wings against the roof
like a clash among immense spring leaves struggling
or of hands clapping to summon you to death?
And don’t you feel afterwards someone exiled is crying,
that there’s an ember of a fallen angel on the threshold,
brought suddenly like a beggar by an alien gust of wind?
And don’t you feel, like me, that a house rolling toward the abyss
runs over you with a crash of crockery shattered
by lightning,
with two empty shells embracing each other for an endless journey,
with a screech of axles suddenly fractured like love’s broken promises?
And don’t you feel then your bed sinking like the nave of a cathedral crushed by the fall of heaven,
and that a thick, heavy water runs over your face till the final judgment?
Again it’s the slime.
Again your heart thrown into the depth of the pool,
prisoner once more among the waves closing a dream.
Lie down as I do in this miserable eternity of one day.
It’s useless to howl.
From these waters the beasts of oblivion don’t drink. via poets.org

Motivation Mondays: Ship Happens
Why Ship Happens: Are you ready for a fall?
Judgment of Solomon ~ King Solomon and the Baby via Wikipedia & 1Kings 3:16-28.
“Two young women who lived in the same house and who both had an infant son came to Solomon for a judgment. One of the women claimed that the other, after accidentally smothering her own son while sleeping, had exchanged the two children to make it appear that the living child was hers. The other woman denied this and so both women claimed to be the mother of the living son and said that the dead boy belonged to the other.
After some deliberation, King Solomon called for a sword to be brought before him. He declared that there is only one fair solution: the live son must be split in two, each woman receiving half of the child. Upon hearing this terrible verdict, the boy’s true mother cried out, “Please, My Lord, give her the live child—do not kill him!” However, the liar, in her bitter jealousy, exclaimed, “It shall be neither mine nor yours—divide it!” Solomon instantly gave the live baby to the real mother, realizing that the true mother’s instincts were to protect her child, while the liar revealed that she did not truly love the child. The reputation of the king greatly increased when all the people of Israel heard of this wise judgment.”

Motivation Mondays: Ship Happens
Moving Beyond Ship Happens:
“Hope” is the thing with feathers – (314) BY EMILY DICKINSON
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me. via poetryfoundation

Love how ship happens! Ships are constantly moving, never anchored down for long in open seas and that’s what life should be like! Always moving along 🙂
That first quote by Louisa May Alcott really brings more perspective and its as fitting today as it was back ten , i need to kearn to accept that some things just happen and i just need to get on with it
I think that when something bad happens, the best way to deal with it is to accept and acknowledge that it has happened, and that you can’t turn back the time and undo it. If there are no ways of fixing what was broken, then you should move on. It might hurt, but there is no point of wearing down your soul with negativity for something that you can’t change.
Wow! That’s a lot of deep inspirational stuff for a morning. Thanks for this uplifting post I don’t tend to read much poetry and yet it really does have the power to move you
This motivational ideas are very helpful to those who needs encouragement. Thank you for sharing!
Wonderful photos for Monday Motivation. Last weekend we went to my grandmother-in-laws funeral. Although there were tears she had the last song which had the whole service in fits of giggles.Shows her humour and how she wants us all to move on.
I absolutely love the first quote you give in this post! I am such a worrier and stress to much about things I cannot control and need to remember to just live in the present even though it is hard sometimes. Thanks so much for sharing!
What a wonderful and motivating post! Love the first quote a lot! Lets forget about all those bad things that happened to us in the past and lets not overthink what happened in the future! Lets just enjoy the moment we are at!
This is soo deep and thoughtful, thank you for sharing
Such a great motivational post! I enjoyed reading this to help motivate me!
I love how you have themed out the days for the months. I always look forward for your posts on Instagram. Thank you again for creating such a space to feel motivated when days seem helpless.
This is a great reminder to put things in perspective, isn’t it? Thanks for sharing the quotes and poems. This was a really lovely reminder 🙂
I learn to find peace with whatever has happen. I don’t always agree that things happen for a reason but I work towards a better me everyday.
This is such a nice post, so perfect for what I am experiencing right now. I agree with you that when ship happen, we should not cry over that past instead embrace and live the present and make it better.
These are great motivational quotes, not only for Mondays but for everyday.
I really needed this today! I recently started my graduate program and while I love the classes so far, there have been a few hiccups that have gotten me down. I just need to keep pushing forward!
Love this! Ship really does happen and it is so important that we pick ourselves back up again and keep going. Thank you dear!
I needed some strong motivation this week. Sometimes a little encouragement goes a long way! Thanks for the pick me up!
Yes!! It is so important to have a good belief system for when the “ship happens”. Also love these poems you shared as welll!
I enjoyed the poems. But there are some days that I feel like my ship has sunk. Depending on what we are dwelling on that is in the past, it can be pretty difficult to move on from the past.
This thought made me feel positive right now. I am going through a rough patch. It was like a medicine on my pain.
This quote – “We should not moor a ship with one anchor, or our life with one hope” was a wake up call for me. My life has been through a myriad of stumbles, failures, setbacks and yet I hang on to my hopes for a better life – in all aspects.
What an interesting post!!!! I love new and interesting sources of motivation, and especially tying your thoughts together around the metaphor of a ship….nice job!!!!
I’m definitely feeling motivated after reading this. ‘Ship’ really does happen, and it’s hard to deal with sometimes when in the moment. However, hope is a powerful word, and feeling, and one that always gets me through the tough times.
Great poems for when “ship” happens. 🙂
I really need to specially motivated on Mondays. But I never liked Mondays at all.
Good advice to allow things to happen and not dwell on them … pick yourself up and move on.
How we handle difficult times and adversity really shape who we are. It can be hard to be aware of that while we’re in the storm, but the purpose usually becomes clear after.
I always loved the story of King Solomon and the baby! He was a very wise man!
This post helps me to understand no matter what we face in any situation, we are the master of our ship. We need to work with others to sail through it. Face the challenge and embrace what is coming .
I love that first quote, I wish we knew who said it! That has been huge for me to try and live in the present. I really believe it is the key to happiness
Love this! Ship very definitely happens irrespective of what course you set. It is unavoidable and most times it can be completely out of our control. What does make a difference however, is how we consciously respond to it. That is something over which we do have control – and how we choose to exercise that control will ultimately determine how well we will progress from that moment.
Ship happens makes me laugh. But you’re right stuff happens all the time and you need to be able to move on x
This is such a nice post and I love every quotes that being used here. What I learn here is to continue and move forward with your life even someone is left you behind.
Wonderful post, very true. Sometimes we get overwhelmed in the problems that we forget that it happens and that we need to accept it and move forward.
This story about King Solomon is a classic, one of the first stories that I learned from the Bible.
That was like super motivating thought of the day. Mooring life with one hope is just waste of time.
“…it simply means the river bends” by Enoch Powell is a very powerful thought that I hadn’t heard before. I think it could be quite motivating when feeling burnt out or when things simply won’t go right in life…going straight to my rainy day collection.
– Nandita
We should not moor in anything that happens from the past. We should go forward and live the life that we have.
Another very positive and motivational post! I am so ready for a whole new season and new beginnings!
This is such a perfect read for me today I experienced betrayal and hatred stays in my heart but after reading this I learn to let go and move forward and make my life be better that before.
Such a powerful poem! And it’s so important to learn to pick yourself up and move on in life!
We always have to be prepared for the good and ship. Unfortunately the ship usually happens when we least expect it.
When unexpected thing happened, it’s all good to feel like upset at first, it’s a normal thing. Just remember, being defeated is a temporary situation, giving up is what makes it permanent.
I love that quote about stars vs. lights on ships, couldn’t be more true! <3
splendid great article, i really love it, is informative and educative.
I am in awe once again to read one of your posts, and find it is close in theme to one I just wrote about living in the present, because we can’t return to the past, and the future hasn’t arrived yet. To try to live anywhere but the present just causes emotional turmoil and anxiety. I also love the story of Solomon, with the wisdom he showed in determining who was the true mother.
Very inspiring post Elizabeth! We are not always prepared for what life brings us, but other people’s experience is so valuable in our path!
Love it! This is so true and I totally think we need to not sweat the small stuff.
So very true! I try not to get too down on myself when it does because “This too shall pass”
All you really have is the present you can live in. You cannot worry about the future as it will take care of itself in due time. And you cannot change the past.
I instantly felt calm after reading the first two lines. We each have our own battles and have to nurture them before they control our beings. Love this post
Love the title of this post! I am looking forward to spreading messages of hope and prevention on suicide prevention day. Thank you for bringing awareness to this! -Tonya Tardiff
That’s a beautiful motivational post. I love reading your post. It really motivates me and keep me positive.
Great quote by Louisa May Alcott – Little Women is probably one of the best books ever written. I love how inspiring your blog is. It really is off the charts on the motivation
Moving on is an easy task for me. Forgive easily but I don’t forget. I also don’t hold it over there head but instead use it as a teaching lesson for myself.
I totally agree with this, and when bad things happen in our lives we have no choice but to move on and try to continue living our lives. I have learned this the hard way!
This is a great inspirational post. Great poem and I loved the way you put this post.
I love this! I’ve pinned it to 2 popular Pinterest boards for others to appreciate. I hope that’s ok 🙂
I’m such a planner and it’s hard for me to live in the moment. However, having kids has made me pause sometimes to just soak in the moments.
I had never read that King Solomon parable. And of course Emily Dickinson’s poem is quite noteworthy.
I love the quote about the anchor. And such interesting things to think about. I always appreciate your motivation Monday posts!
This was very encouraging that hard times will happen. A good way to move on is keep the hope and faith that it won’t last long or that something better is coming.
Very inspiring. I love the Monday Motivation schedule. Positivity is contagious. Keep up the good work.
Learning from your own mistakes and from the mistakes of others will helps us to move on better. We just need to have an open minds and be a keen observer.
Ship happens that’s for sure. Never heard this PG version of the phrase. Did you ever hear the speech on how how the best ships are friendships?
This certainly motivates. And yes, ships happens a lot with me, but we just go on cozy and do not give up.
An excellent post. I like these photos and everything you write very much. You are really a source of inspiration.
This is very motivating post, thank you for sharing xo’s
Laura
Some fantastic poems and words here. Made us reflect and take time to put things into perspective x
This is such a valuable motivation. Filling our today with meaningful actions is very priceless. This will make our life much easier and happier..
Your posts are so moving, and inspirational. I especially resonated with the Hope poem, it really is thought provoking and actually made me re-think of a situation that is currently going on, and helping me to move past it.
Good quotes and also I belive that reading your blog regularly will make everyone confident! And thanks for sharing☺
Definitely needed this today!!! Thank you for posting and allowing us to start our day right. This is something I need to remember every single day!
The story of Solomon is a classic! I love how he uses his wisdom to solve the problems. I only hated Solomon when he did bad things to David.
I think it’s important for us to learn things the hard way something (although it’s definitely not something I like to admit in the midst of these things happening), because it really shapes our lives going forward, as well as gives us the opportunity to help shape those that we care about through our own misguided experiences.
Keep your head held high, and know that ultimately, this was all for the best. You’ve got a whole team of incredible people backing you every step of the way! xx
Very motivational as I always, I love the changing topics. I especially enjoyed ship happens!
This is such a nice post and I learned a lot from it. I agree that it so hard to be betrayed by someone but it is so important to learn how to forget the past and to live in the present and be better you.
Life is all about lessons, isn’t it? Sometimes things go our way and other times they don’t our job is to keep learning and moving on … and trying to do better!
Life has it´s ups and downs… when ship happens stay positive and see it as a learning point and get a new perspective in life.
I always enjoy coming to your blog because you’re honest and real but always having something positive to say!
When someone wants to quit or ship into something else betrayal comes. And even how hard to accept and forget it you will always come to the point that you need to do it for yourself and for you to live your life better than the past.
I have a hard time not dwelling on the past. Great reminder to keep a positive attitude!
This is one of my favorite Biblical stories. A mother’s love is remarkable.
I love that poem by Emily Dickinson – lovely.
I love all your quotes and passages. Thank you for helping me start my week off right.
Super motivational!! I love the “ship happens” line haha. ShiP does happen, it’s how we deal with it that defines us! 😉 Great post!
Ship happens, that is such a clever tittle. I love all the motivation Monday links that you have listed, I found them pretty helpful, thank you so much for sharing
“Bumps in the road.” That is what I call those moments when I feel like quitting would be the best option. But of course, I don’t quit. I just keep the faith and chug along. My mission in life has yet to be accomplished and I have no reason to quit the journey.
I love a motivational quote, I have them up on my wall to keep positive
We have to be ready for all that come our way and can’t let things get us down, great post, thank you.
I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason. WE might not always see the purpose but they come to teach us something, to make us stronger. I love the Epictetus quote so much.
Great post! Keep up the awesome work on your Motivational Mondays!
Motivational indeed! I love the thoughtfulness behind every quote and poem in this post. It’s so easy to feel defeated in life when ship happens, but, as you said, far more can be learned if we pause just a moment and find the value in our struggles.
This is such a nice post, holding and mourning from the past is fine but living in the present and making yourself to become a better one is more important.
It certainly does! Having a back-up plan makes a big difference when ship happens. Because life can be stressful, it’s so important to make use of the quite times (the calm waters in this case).
I have a mantra, for myself: keep the past with you, because it helped you to build up what you are and it’s precious. DO think about the future because happiness it’s also the possibility to imagine a better tomorrow. Then, take yesterday and tomorrow to make today the most important day of your life.
I love the quote at the end. That we should not moor our life with one hope. This is so true and inspiring. More people should read it
ship happens to me often, I’ve learned at a young age to just continue regardless of the different type of ships, enjoy the journey has become my mantra
I agree that often times things happen that are completely beyond our control. Holding onto hope is the best way to get through the storm.
Yep, ship happens, to all of us. It’s how we deal with it, brush ourselves off and move forward that helps develop our character. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Corrie ten Boom or not, but during these times I always remember her saying, ‘thank God for the fleas.’ 🙂
Loving the message here. We need to focus on the present and forget the past and not worry about the future so much.
I’ve always believed that it happens just to make you feel stronger. Some can move one whilst others have a had time but time is everything and different for everyone
I love this post, thank you so much for sharing. The Emily Dickinson poem is JUST what I needed today. xx
I loved the quote about mooring a boat with one anchor, really speaks to many life situations we put ourselves through.
It is inevitable, ship will happen. Awesome post!
This is right to me this week, right now i’m struggling so much but this speaks to my heart. I know this won’t last forever.
I think we can all agree that we can use some motivation on Mondays. This is a good idea.
Very witty title! Bad things do happen, but we must keep sailing, right?
Ship does happen. You can either roll with it or let it devour you alive.
I needed this wealth of inspiration words this morning, thank you.“Hope” is the thing with feathers – Emily Dickson. I haven’t read that poem in years – love it.
I love the quote about living in the present and making it beautiful. I think we all need to live in the present a little bit more and worry less about the past and future
Beautiful post! Happy week to you!
Very beautiful and inspiring words! I so needed to see this as I am going through a rough time. Thank you!
I love reading all of your quotes. You are such an inspiration.
Time moves on, ship happens. Fall for me is a happy time. Time to move forward, to become a better version of yourself. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing this blog. Some people really need consultation from professionals.
There is so much to learn from this motivational post. The problems we face and the setbacks we experience teach us the lessons of lifetime. Living in the present and focussing on what’s on hand is the best way to live life. I like the story of the Judgment of Solomon – very witty king to understand the heart of a mother.
Ugh I am honestly so afraid of failure so I have to remind myself of this often! Usually I try to remember all the things I have accomplished to feel less bad when things go wrong.
Very interesting and useful motivation tips. Very deep, some of them. You gave me food for my soul!
Love the theme for this week!
It is often hard to keep trying at something you have failed at. But if it’s what you really want, you have to keep at it!
that Solomon story was a good one! A true mother WOULD do anything to protect her young (what a scary way going about it though!)
totally agree, hurdles can be in the way but its important to help each other in life
I like this Mondays Motivation. You’re always sharing positive messages and life lessons.
I think a lot of the things we go through are meant to make us stronger. It always amazes me to see what I’m capable of accomplishing with positive thoughts.
Such comforting photos this time around! I didn’t know there was a charity day!
I loved this one >>> “Hope” is the thing with feathers – BY EMILY DICKINSON… Very beautiful poem… 🙂
Absolutely. We cannot control all aspects of our lives. Sometimes things happen and we cant fathom why. But we still have to move on nonetheless!
I love Monday motivation. Thanks so much for sharing this. It is a great concept.
I can totally resonate with your thoughts. This is exactly what my head needed to read. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for another excellent Motivation Mondays post. I really am encouraged every time I visit your blog.
Wgat a beautiful poem! Hope is something we all should live with!
The story of judgement of Solomon is a fascinating one. I enjoyed reading the poem about hope.
I always have such a hard time letting the past go. I spend way too much time berating myself for things that I can no longer change, and I am trying to get better about just being in the moment.
A ship needs an anchor to keep it steady and from floating away on no path. We are the same only we need several different anchors in our lives.
Ship happens, I’m totally using this saying on my children. They have a very difficult time moving past what has happened (ex: sibling broke Lego set), and living in the present. Perhaps this will resonate with them.
I love that poem by Dickinson! The quote about hope is one of my favorites!
I love these posts you do! It’s so important to pick yourself up and move on when something bad happens
A very insightful post! I have found throughout my years that no matter who you are, ship happens. Keep up the good work!
Life can be challenging and it’s helpful to face the trouble and persevere. Problem solving, kindness and teamwork go a long way.
I love this Motivation Monday Series… and especially so reading them on Monday Mornings. Thanks for sharing these.
This is great! I love that first poem! 🙂
Thank you for this!I really need this. It is true that we have to move on with the past and live in the present. Keep on motivating people!
this quote from your website really spoke to me “Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone. Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived. Live in the present and make it beautiful.” Author Unknown ” it is so true and profound.
It’s always good to have some motivation. While things and challenges evolve, I think Mondays are always a struggle and we can use some positive thinking.
I love the idea of Motivational Mondays! I’ll have to follow to see new and interesting pieces!
Love this. I think dealing with loss of any kind or change can be the hardest thing to adapt to.
I so love this quote – “Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone. Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived. Live in the present and make it beautiful.”
And I so love your motivational posts! I love reading them and never get tired of reading the quotes. Thanks for always sharing meaningful posts.
I am not religious but I am not against any religion and I am glad I read this article. I am not sure why but after reading both the poems, something intense woke up in me and I was in tears, of some strange relief. Ship certainly happens and ship when seen with open eyes can sail you through the toughest times despite all the storms! <3
I agree with you so much on this. No matter how careful we tread this life, there’s always going to be a challenge or a hindrance along the way and the best thing we can do is to keep moving forward.
Loved that first quote. I do in fact struggle a lot with forgetting the past and stop worrying about the future. Staying present, I discovered, is quite some inner work.
I always love the poems and extracts that you share. It’s true – ship happens and it happens so that we can grow as individuals and blossom
I’ve found that it’s always best to live day by day. Life will happened and it should knock us out. We can stand firm and push through life’s challenges
I love this motivation piece. And I love that it’s also on a Monday! Great!
I love that Emily Dickinson poem, it is truly beautiful and would be great to file away for those days when ship happens. It’s all about our attitude right? Again, a well-written and curated post. Bravo!
I have encountered a lot of betrayal from work, friends and relationships and I’ve learned a lot from those past experiences. I know it is not a pretty experiences but it thought me to let go and forget the things that always makes me bothered and to move and make myself a better one.
I’ve always found it interesting when things feel as though they aren’t falling into place, how quickly they eventually do. Baby steps, right?
I love the story of King Solomon. That is a wisdom that is beyond anything. I pray God gives me wisdom when dealing with my own life.
Wow. That is pretty deep. I am not exactly sure what it all means, You are very creative.
This post made me think about the shortcomings I experienced in my life. It’s really good to move forward and just learn from them.
This is actually one of my favorite Bible stories. I just shows what unconditional love means. I love how King Solomon handled the situation and I would have to agree that he is indeed a very wise ruler.
I love this. The past is definitely the past for me!
Ship happens but its how we deal with it and take time to process it that matters. Very interesting post.
Things can happen beyond our control. I do not want to wallow in frustration of sulk in defeat. No matter how hurtful it is, I get up and continue to fight. Wounded soldiers are the fiercest fighters!
Ship does happen. And when Ship happens to me I just roll along with it until I am able to change my path.
This is profound. Thank you for the hope that you continue to share. So inspiring 😀
I do really like the poems you share in your Monday Motivation series. I’ll be coming back next week 🙂 x
You have some great poetry with this post. And you are right. In all life there are down turns. And you have to be ready for them to happen and know life still moves on.
I really like the Emily Dickinson poem you posted in line with this. As always, nice blog post!
Thank you for such an encouraging poem.
I know very well how this feels. Unexpected events just wear you down, but it is our attitude towards it that matters. Staying strong, keeping the faith, and trusting God is my main source of strength in trying times.
ust the quote I needed to read right now!
It was so inspiring . Hope his could be an eye opener even before.
Life can be so hard but thing happen. It’s about how you handle the after.
Thanks for the reminder that this too shall pass. I’ve always tried to find the positive no matter how much struggle I’m going through.
Very good post for what I feel right now. Ship happens all the time what we need to do is to learn to let go and move on and make ourselves a better one.
Commented on this one previously, but my comment doesn’t show up. Life can never be all good. It can be difficult to be prepared for the “ship”, but necessary.
“We should not moor a ship with one anchor, or our life with one hope” really resonates with me. I feel that our life is too multi-faceted to be condensed into a single goal. There should be space & flexibility in what we hope for to accomodate whatever life throws. Else, everything can become overwhelming very quickly.

It is kind of funny and sad, but ship happens a lot for me. It can be quite difficult to deal with, but I always find a way.
