What Does a Closed Door Mean to You? Quite often, we view a closed door as a negative symbol; it can represent denial or rejection of expectations or opportunities, but that is NOT entirely true. A closed door can be beneficial, as a denied or slammed door we experience can lead us in a new and better direction. A rejection can be a form of protection against potential adversity associated with what we might believe is good but actually isn’t. Over the years, I have had my share of rejections, and while some hurt and led nowhere, others opened new and far more beneficial doors for me. I remember one job I was so eager to have because I felt supremely qualified for it. I applied, did everything right, and was in the running as one of the final 3 candidates.
When the choice was made, and 2 of us were cut, I was very upset. As far as I was concerned, I was the most qualified for the position, but that didn’t matter. They picked someone else, and I had to move on. The door closed on that position, and I found a far more rewarding, growth-driven opportunity that helped me learn new skills. Many months later, I heard the position had opened again. This time, I was not in a hurry because I had also learned that it was not an ideal work environment. The Closed Door had offered me protection and a new direction, not rejection. Think of your closed door experiences and the lessons learned.

Is it Wise To Walk Away? I know we have all heard sayings about breaking down doors and walking through closed doors to grab our opportunities, but is this sage advice 100% of the time? I don’t think so. Sure, we want doors of opportunity to open for us, and we also want to be prepared for the challenges and growth that come from our experiences. However, there are times when we can choose not to walk through certain doors or be grateful that some doors stay shut. If walking through a door would lead us into a chaotic or hostile situation, it would be best to leave the door closed. Why? Because it is a mark of honor to avoid an unnecessary fight, especially a fight with someone who has nothing to lose. So, just as we are encouraged to choose our battles, we must also meditate on the wisdom of choosing our doors. If we pay attention and reflect on our situations, we will soon better understand our outcomes. They are not random. Think about your own experiences.

Is Your Door Open or Closed? While we are on the subject of external doors, we need to consider the internal doors we carry around with us. They are as important (maybe more so) as the real, concrete doors we encounter in our lives. As I mentioned earlier, a closed door can be beneficial, as a denial or a slammed door we experience can lead us in a new and better direction. A rejection can be a form of protection against potential harms associated with what we might believe is good for us but actually isn’t. But far more important are the internal doors we carry with us. Happiness is an inside job, and external factors offer a temporary band-aid. If we don’t take care of our inner dialogue and work through our baggage, we’d stay stuck in certain areas of our lives. How many of our internal doors are shut because we allow others to live rent-free in our heads? How many of our internal doors are sealed shut because of hurts and fears? Food for thought. We are here to experience life’s ups and downs and to be a blessing to others… So use affirmations to refocus on what feeds/fuels you. BREATHE! More affirmations later

For me, when one door closes, Another one will open. For me, it represent opportunities in life. Sometimes, when a door closes, we can wait for a window to open. It means we have to be patient in life.
I love that quote by Benjamin Franklin! I am a great believer that when one door closes another one opens.
So true Elizabeth, but it’s not always easy to recognize and see that a door that slammed closed is a good thing. We become so focused on that one door that shut that we forget to see all the others that are opening up all around us.
True and we all do this. That is why we need reminders to learn to let go and let the process unfold.<3

Wow, this was exactly what I needed to read today! I need to rememeber that some doors shut for a reason.
Such a nice post very motivational and inspirational I never thought that closed doors also signify a protection from adversities but I still choose to open my door I want to welcome every little things in this life even if it’s good or bad as long as we know how to handle it and as long as we learn from it.
Years ago, I had planned on leaving the country to work abroad. Things didn’t go the way I wanted them to be and that became my closed door. If it weren’t for this setback, I probably would not have met the love of my life and have this wonderful son. 🙂
To me closed doors mean other doors will be opening momentarily! There is always a new beginning around the corner!
Doors, the one thing that you can use to lock yourself in with away from the world or choose to open and escape to the world of unbeknownst obstacle. That’s what doors means to me.

I have 2 thoughts on this. God can open or close a door depending on what he wants for us. Also sometimes a closed door is like an unanswered prayer, like your job.
I love how you phrased the ending of the true message and how we should interpret the direction we should take. We can be quick to move on a decision or path we “think” is the best for that moment. You’re right, it needs deep meditation and thought on choosing the right path.
I think we all need better skills to objectively see the things and situations around (closed doors included) – Every door is not an obstacle. It could also be a sigh that, that is not the path we are meant to taken and just need to be patience. Great thought provoking post!
Sometimes a closed door is a blessing- we just may not realize it yet. Once that door is closed, we are free to move on to better opportunities!
Oh dear Elizabeth. I went through something very similar years ago. I trained a girl in my department and she ended up being my supervisor. It was bad but then later I realized I was meant for a different path because things actually turned out great. I think when doors close, we do have to just take deep breaths and accept that that was not the path we were meant to take.
As one door closes, another opens comes to mind. Without you prompting me to think I would have automatically assumed it to be a negative outlook too but I guess sometimes you need to close a door or two to be able to open new ones to exciting and new experiences, different chapters of our lives.
I love this inspirational post of insight and exploration of our true self and the good and bad that surrounds us. Doors that are closed are closed for me. However that doesn’t mean I give up, I just search for those that are open.

My family is going through what you’ve described with your previous job hunt. My husband just finished grad school and is looking to advance his career. With the new hunt bring closed doors, but it’s not dead ends. Need to share the inspiration with him!
Such an interesting read. It’s funny how closed doors are seen as a negative but something I think it can be good to close the door on something negative or that isnt good for you – close the door and move on.
I’ve been working hard on trying to recognize the growth or new opportunities behind every perceived failure. It’s hard (so hard, sometimes) but a closed door isn’t necessarily the end of the road, it’s just redirecting you down a new path.
This is a great reminder that even though things don’t always go our way, it may not be a bad thing. All we can do is move forward to the next opportunity.

Wonderful thoughts! I made it to the final round of a tough potential internship process only to get cut at the end. But I landed one I applied to as a backup, with more responsibilities and opportunities to grow. Sometimes a closed door is a blessing!

I am a firm believer of when one door closes another opens! It has happened quite a few times in my life!
Those are some beautiful doors, and we definitely agree with your quote. It’s always good to think about karma and there’s another door open around the corner if one door is closed.
I think doors are bound to close as we go through life and sometimes it stays shut. It’s important that we learn how to move past that and to accept it as well. Besides, a door closing means another chance for us to open a new one.
It can be hard to see at the time, but when a door closes, it’s always for our highest good. The door can sometimes reopen later if it is meant for us. Sometimes, we have to get out of our own way and look at the bigger picture.
I always believe there will be another door open if one closes. This really happened to me few times in life and it turn out to be a better option and better path for me. I am a strong believer in this quote.
I’ve read a fine line that says, whenever a door closes, another one opens. I think that’s the best way to interpret it. And it’s funny how I just realized that there’s a picture of the same quote up there, I rarely hear it but it seems to be a famous motivational phrase.

Closed doors are definitely looked upon as something negative far too often. Sometimes we need to look at it as if that door is not the right one and there is something else bigger and better in store for us!
I think a closed door is a sign that something better is out there and we need to keep knocking. When we ask, we receive, but when we don’t receive, we need to keep going!
As always your post is wise, Elizabeth. It makes me reflect upon my life and that’s always a good thing! I come from a country where opportunities are a VERY rare thing. In our imaginary opportunities aren’t doors, opened or closed, those are like trains that pass only once in a lifetime and don’t stop, rather you have to run and jump into it. Of course, not everyone is capable of this. Only very prepared, well-trained, with an extraordinary strength, determination and rapidity can jump successfully. But even when you have all these qualities, some people live their whole existence and not train will show up.
When I came to Europe and I actually found the doors, for me it was a blessing I never dreamed of. Because, a door might be opened or closed, but that door is not going anywhere. Sometimes, when you find a closed door, all you need to do is politely go and knock. Even a closed door hides a promise, I wasn’t aware it existed. Because I never imagined that kind of opportunities were real. What can I say? my child is attending a bilingual school that is totally free. When was I going to dream with that? I have certainly been blessed.

This post is so apt for me right now. As you know, I’m in the acting competition. I too felt that I had a good chance getting into at least top 5, but I wasn’t selected. It made me really really disappointed and I cried for days… Thanks for this timely advice. Will look into this more.

As an architecture person, I love doors, and they also make the most powerful metaphors. Your posts are always so meaningful and thought-provoking. For me, if a doors is closed, it means it wasn’t for me. But I always want to be prepared when opportunity knocks!
I liked the last part about if my door is open or closed, I gues my answer would be it’s always open. Open to help anyone, anybody that needs my help. We often forget that our purpose as a person is not just about our personal achievement “success” there’s always this special door that we have to help other people who are in need. Great article!

There are so many ways to define closed doors. But for me it’s ending something to open a new adventure in your life! I’ve closed so many doors in the past years and I’d say it’s definitely part of our lives.

Doors open and close all the time in our lives, but we have to learn that if one door closes another will open. Sometimes things happen for a reason and although we may not understand it we need to keep looking forward.
Personally I see closed those to mean, a requirement for proof of worthiness, not everyone is permitted to enter, but those who persist. Not every closed door is locked sometimes we just have to push. Great post. A really necessary reminder and motivation
I often find my “internal” doors close off when an external door does. For instance, I was like you and didn’t get a job I really wanted and closed myself off emotionally for quite some time afterwards because of the rejection I had experienced.

Not bad, when one door closes another opens also only if we are looking for it, which I find to be the most important part. only IF and WHEN you are ready to stop staring at that closed door will you see other opportunities that lay around.

Due to being an introvert, having anxiety panic, depression and physical health issues I have shut almost all of my internal doors. I have been hurt mentally and physically and didn’t care about my own self to repair those hurts or prevent myself from physical illnesses. Now some of the time I try to look forward, although, most of the time I just wait for the end. One of these days I’ll try to be positive and it will work, hopefully.
Closed door to me represents something that I had the opportunity to access which has been taking away from me. But I also believe that when one door closes, there are many other options available/

Regret over the closed door or lost opportunities is one of the worst feeling. It’s always better to have a open mind and look for what we have acheived rather than what we could have if we have got that closed door. It’s not worth fighting every battle.

Those moments when the door closes is a challenging one. Filled with tons of strong emotions. But once that emotion settles when the right door opens we always find some type of peace. It all falls into place and the door was closed for a reason. Now is the time that it was meant for you when that door opens.
I do believe that when a door closes, another one opens. And I have experienced this a few times in my life. The new opportunity was so much better and so much exciting than the one under the closed door, always.

Your article reminded me a famous quote by Hellen Keller. According to which, when a door get closed in front of you thousand other opened doors opens up for us.. But we are so bust looking at the closed door that the opened doors remain unnoticed…. ☺

Yeah I also believe that when that door opens for you, you should take it. And when it closes, be patient coz another door might open, sometimes its a window, or if you are lucky, a full gate will open.

This is a very inspirational post! I believe that when one door closes, another one will shortly open. Everything happens for a reason, even if we don’t know what that reason is at the time, there always is one.
For me a close door would mean an opportunity awaiting ahead of me, behind those doors are the most wonderful things that might happen in my life if i take the step to move forward and open the doors as sign of accepting the challenge.

Retaining the calm while all doors seems closed in front of you is the toughest job one can do. In that time the sense of looking everything makes us pissed off everything and we fail to look the opportunities we are going to have in future. I used to be so focused on the doors that shut, that I forget to see all the ones opening up all around me. Now when I door closes I smile and a look forward to what God has for me next.I know the benefit of a closed door. I used put wedges in the door because I was so afraid for them to close, but once God’s forces them close and I see why, I find myself so grateful.
Closed doors. Perfect read for me. I have experienced that closed doors inwardly are much damaging. Anything can be conquered outwardly when inward awakening happens.

I appreciate your insight and yes, we often read about others closing doors on us but we also close doors on ourselves.
When I was younger, I used to see closed doors as failures or disappointments. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to see them as redirections instead. I don’t take rejection as hard as I used to because I’ve learned that not everything is meant for us. Sometimes, it’s simply God and the universe leading us toward something better that’s meant for us.
I concur. Sometimes an assumed failure is a doorway to greater blessings. I’m seeing that in my life right now.
