Haiku: Immortalized as Lady Liberty…
“The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying, ‘Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses.’ She’s got a baseball bat and yelling, ‘You want a piece of me?” Robin Williams

Haiku: Immortalized as Lady Liberty
Lady Liberty…
Mine, cast in stone, struggles free
Want a piece of me?
Copper, Wrought Iron
Her old clothes… tossed casually
She wants to be free
Suffering Lady
On a painful pedestal
Dashed dreams… Hopes for peace
Why is it significant? She stands for the hope, fears and tears many immigrants live with in a new land. She is the epitome of the hopeful and the hopeless cocooned by a tough exterior that hides life’s disappointments and pain… There is opportunity in the distance. More below
“I’ve always had a strong feeling for the Statue of Liberty, because it became the statue of my personal liberty.” David Antin

Haiku: Immortalized as Lady Liberty…
Won’t go willingly
She trusts her wounds will recede
Life’s … a mystery
Lady Liberty
She is me, tired but free
Nursing … ancient dreams
Immortalized as the Statue of Liberty gives hope and freedom a chance of survival… Yes, I pray so. Happy Holidays to All! What Statue immortalized you in stone? Why was it significant?

I can only imagine what it was like for the early immigrants arriving in NY… Lots of great pictures at the immigrants museum. TY! 🙂
Thanks so much for a lovely haiku poem on the statue of liberty, a symbol of freedom, democracy, hope and dream. i visited the statue of liberty some years ago. i was inspired at that time. Similarly, I am inspired by your haiku today.
TY for your comment… She inspires me too and then I wonder what would happen if she moved and talked. 😆
I believe the Statue of Liberty is in the heart of many people. So it does move and speak!

Love your response!
I love the Statue of Liberty. She welcomed both sets of my grandparents into America – legally. And made for some of the most memorable class trips of my life – once as a 6th grader and many times as a teacher.
When I visited here, there were class groups everywhere. It’s a fav school trip destination. TY! 🙂
I really loved this post, i think you are very talented! 🙂

I wish I could put a statue like this here in Wisconsin. I don’t know what it would be….
What a riot! They’d love it in Wis! Maybe we should do a fundraiser? love you lady! 😆
I think so!! You would think they would have more attractions here with the water… We just need a bit of style!!!
Make a proposal and see what happens. 😉
True… We’ll see. . . I would hate for it to be something dumb like a slice of cheese or something…
Oh, Elizabeth, these haiku are so well written and very original. Well done. 🙂
TY Cee and that’s an honor coming from a Haiku Queen!!! Hope all is going along well? TY! 🙂
You can’t but stand at her base and stare up in awe. Great post, Eliz. She is a stunner. 🙂
She is a stunner… Very powerful presence up close too. TY! 🙂
Beautiful Haiku again Eliz! How on earth do you do it? 🙂
Madhu, I’m glad you asked. I don’t!!! The Muse/Grace does and sometimes, I get nothing. TY! 🙂
I am amazed how you can take all the Daily Press prompts and turn them into gold pieces of peace, Eliz. I love this re-vision of Lady Liberty.
The stanza:
“Suffering Lady
On a painful pedestal
Dashed dreams… Hopes for peace”
resonates with not only America’s dashed dreams, but also those grieving mothers in Newtown and beyond.
Thank you for this powerful post.
TY for your insightful feedback… Some of the prompts speak to me in powerful ways and push old stuff to the surface… then grace sweeps it out or forward… you know what I mean. TY! 🙂
Thank you for sharing a pictures, well done.HAPPY NEW YEAR!
TY so much for your feedback. Happy Holidays! 😉
I had not seen her in person for 40 years and as we took a harbor cruise over Christmas and sailed past her, I could not help but be moved thinking about all the hopes and dreams she represents. Lovely, thoughtful post ~ Kat
Yes, she is quite the force on the NY harbor… TY! 🙂
I enjoy your haikus! And I love contemplating the many facets of the Great Lady! I don’t have any idea what statue would immortalize me. What a very interesting question, actually. I’ll have to give that some serious thought!
Go right ahead and you might surprise yourself. I had no idea about an appropriate statue when I started working on the post and as I contemplated it… She surfaced… 🙂
I’m a huge fan of Lady Liberty! Going through Ellis Island is an amazing journey, as well. The strength, trust and fortitude it took for our ancestors to walk through that place is awe inspiring!
Thanks Elizabeth!
