“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” Rabindranath Tagore

“Come, my friends,
‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.”
Alfred, Lord Tennyson

I took a drive today on the highway… The roads were quite busy with traffic, but what caught my attention was the beauty of the setting sun… It made me look, wonder, and appreciate the fact that I can see and enjoy the setting sun in peace. I can sit in a car, camera at hand, as a passenger, take pictures of  the magnificent display of colors in the sky, and enjoy nature’s gift to man. The wonder of a sunset.

Lost, yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone forever.” Horace Mann

“Once I saw a chimpanzee
gaze at a particularly beautiful sunset
for a full 15 minutes,
watching the changing colors [and then]
retire to the forest without picking a pawpaw for supper.” Adriaan Kortlandt

As I took pictures of the setting sun flashing by my car, I marveled at the beautiful, changing range of colors; glorious golds, reds, orange, and shimmering silver touched with frothy cream. Imagine a world where the sun neither rose nor set… What would we do if all we had was darkness and gloom? I am grateful for the wonder of a sunset. And you? More below… 😉

“If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God.” G. K. Chesterton

“We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.”  John McCrae

How do you view the setting sun? As the signifier of a day well spent? A sign that the end is nigh? Perhaps, we see it as another momentous reminder of the splendid, grace filled moments in our lives. That we can pause and cherish the wonder of a sunset is a simple act that isn’t so simple… for there are others for whom the sun will never rise or set. Count your blessings. I am grateful for the sundown and the assurance of good to come.  What are your thoughts? How do you view sunsets? Do you ever sit and watch the sun go down? What are your impressions of a setting sun? Do share! Thank you. 😉

Positive Motivation Tip: Do not let the sun set on a tiff with your loved ones and others. Embrace your differences.

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” Beautiful my friend. each image of the sunset is like hope and calmness to my heart. Sunset no matter where it happens is like magic…when its happens nothing seems to matter, that all the heartaches we had that day seem to just melt and disappear like the sun exiting the day…Thank you . Bless you heart always.

Oh gosh, I can rarely get a chance to view a sunset now, since I stay at my mom’s shop until we close at 7. It is rare on the weekends that I get to leave early. We have closed at 3 or 4 pm the past few weekends since we managed to sell out of cupcakes. A sunset seem good to see, when you haven’t seen one in weeks. I do take night classes at school so I might be able to see a sunset then.

These sunrises and sunsets are most inspiriting. Thank you so much for your generosity and dedication in sharing here today. There is a road in NW Alabama called Mountain Gap Road. From the actual gap, one can see the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets that color several valleys and ridges all at once! Wonderful reminders from Our Dear Heavenly Father and Creator of All how HE wishes our lives to be colored in joy and love and affect all around us in like manner!

I view a beautiful sunset as the icing on the cake, I suppose. It is amazing how peaceful one feels viewing a sunset. Makes me thankful too.

Your photographs are magnificent. I am sure though, they are nothing in comparison to having actually been there. I’ve taken so many pictures of beautiful days, beautiful scenes, hoping to catch Nature’s splendor, only to be disappointed by the fact that no picture can ever truly capture the moment and the awe of our Earth in her twilight hours. However, these photos are a wonderful attempt at achieving that goal.

Whoa Nelly, this rings my bell….beautiful. Sunsets…sigh….beautiful quotes…sigh. Margie

Sunset brings mixed emotions for me. It can be seen as an ending… or a closing. There is a song called “Abendrot” (Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss) which is exquisitely beautiful and sad…about sunset as the end of one’s life on earth. And as George Harrison sang, “Sunset doesn’t last all evening”…

  23. 30/01/2012 5:09 pm

I don’t take enough time to enjoy a sunset. Thanks for putting it in perspective. Beautiful pictures.

  24. 30/01/2012 5:09 pm

I enjoy watching the sun set . . . and have seen some beauties.
Love the quote about the chimpanzee!

    “Once I saw a chimpanzee
gaze at a particularly beautiful sunset
    for a full 15 minutes,
watching the changing colors [and then]
retire to the forest without picking a pawpaw for supper.”
    ~ Adriaan Kortlandt

What a beautiful sunset. I love them.

Lovely, lovely, lovely! I am a sunset chaser! I make a point of noticing the sunset every evening. I can’t get a clear view of the horizon most days, but I acknowledge the shifting colors and just simply appreciate! I say a prayer of thanksgiving for having come through the day, and I just let the air out of my tires! If it has been a very hard day, then the sunset still signals to me that it’s time to rest, and that “tomorrow” holds some possibilities for better.Thank you, Elizabeth. Debra

we took a drive today on the highway, to bring a friend to the airport Dusseldorf early in the morning – a 11 hours flight to Japan – … but what caught my attention was the beauty of the sunrise: shining on an icy river (Ruhr) and snowy hills …

  29. 31/01/2012 5:47 am

Who could argue the beauty of the setting sun? It is a true gift of nature. I’ve done the same – sitting in the car, trying to capture the magnificent colors through the camera. I seem to watch a lot more winter sunsets than summer.

Gorgeous photos! Thanks for making me look forward to this evening!!! 🙂

  30. 31/01/2012 8:01 am

I love the setting sun not as a marker but for the beauty of the moment it comes and the wonder it gives me to see it move across the horizon. Beautiful!

  31. 01/02/2012 1:47 am

Beautiful pics, Elizabeth – thoroughly enjoyed this post

  32. 01/02/2012 6:15 am

The sight of a sunset is so soothing and makes me forget all my worries and preoccupations so that I can take in every second of such a wonderful moment…

  33. 01/02/2012 1:37 pm

I moved to Colorado in 2005. We enjoy some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world every night for FREE.

No matter how bad your day, you cannot look at a sunset and not be grateful to be alive.

I always view a sunset as God’s way of showing off.

  34. 01/02/2012 8:43 pm

I agree…the wonders of a sunset are so moving. I love watching the sky change throughout the sunset…such transitions of color, light and depth…really inspirational.
