Summer in NY: Top Things to Do…

Spread the love

“Of all the wonders of nature, a tree in summer is perhaps the most remarkable; with the possible exception of a moose singing ”Embraceable You” in spats.” Woody Allen

Summer in NY: Top Things to Do...

Summer in NY: Top Things to Do… Central Park & Bridge

We had a brutal winter and a wet spring, but in less than a month, we will be ready for the colors, heat and outdoors of summertime in NYC and State.  Summer is almost upon us and we can feel the excitement in the air.. While the first day of our summer solstice is not till June 21st, most of us are gearing up, mentally and physically, to get our summer groove on. New York is a great place to visit at any time of the year, but our summers are packed with loads of things to do and places to go. Since it is also a tourist friendly state, you are bound to meet people from around the world or, perhaps, from your neck of the wood and take home wonderful memories of your time here.

Summer in NY: Top Things to Do… Lincoln Center

To help us get the most our time here this summer, I have pulled together a list of top things to do while you make your pit stop in NY. I included some things outside the city because there is plenty to see within a a few hours ride by train or car. So don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy trips inside and outside NY. Below are Ten plus more things to do in NY this summer… Additional resources are here. NYCgo, NYMag, Attractions and Tours. What else would you like to do? Blog Hop continues below!  🙂

Quite frankly, if you choose, you could do lots of fun free things or things on the cheap, like park events, and visits to the Met where you pay what you can afford. Your trip to NY doesn’t have to be expensive experience. After you’ve exhausted yourself doing things from this list, you may try more things through GONYC. Have a great time visiting NY! What are your thoughts? What are your plans for the summer? Where do you plan to visit? If you had to pick a few places to visit or recommend what would they be? Do share! Thank you. 🙂

I like the Summer DO’s list! I won’t be traveling. Things are just tight right now and someday I may get to TX to visit relatives but not this year as planned. Eliz-you have the best blog! So interesting and thought provoking too. I got to learn about NY 🙂

      Hang in there Jackie,
I know it is challenging on the body and mind, all will work out for you… Thnak you for your continued support and comments. I appreciate your blog too. 🙂

I WISH I could visit New York….Like Jackie, there is NOT money for that kind of trip.

  3. 25/05/2011 3:59 am

This is useful – I plan to visit NY and Washington DC before I die.

  4. 25/05/2011 4:32 am

you’ve created a great tribute to my favorite city!

  5. 25/05/2011 5:49 am

We haven’t been able to take a family vacation in 4 years–but finally this summer we are taking a trip to Cayman. Summer is off-season, so the rates are not so bad. I think the anticipation of a vacation is half the fun! Love your photos on this post.

Oh Elizabeth! How I long for the days of visiting NYC!! I have not been there since 2000! Is that not sad? Your photos are so vivid and exciting! I miss the City. The first time I was there was in the summer – a bit humid -wouldn’t you say? I stayed in New Hyde Park and rode the Long Island RR into the City. It is the most fantastic place in the world!! Took the Circle Line cruise around the Island, walked in Soho, Greenwich Village, Little Italy (yum!) and I remember buying knock-offs (Ha!) – that was in the 90s. Then I came for Christmas Time and saw the Rockettes, 30 Rock – the Christmas tree there! 5th Avenue, NBC Studios, Central Park… Ahh, I miss it! Gosh – 11 years? Someday, I’ll be back – and I will definitely look you up!! Great post! 🙂

    sorry Eliz,
that I can’t deliver a video with a moose singing ”Embraceable You”
but I tried to do my very best to support some summertime feelings
performing my pavilion blues in my garden though, NYC in winter – that must be beautiful too …

  8. 25/05/2011 9:31 am

NY looks like Tokyo because there are tall buildings, crowded and beautiful parks!

What great fun! I can feel the excitement and the love people have for the city that never sleeps.
I would love to visit the city through the eyes of a tourist and love the reminder that we can do things for free too.
Thanks for a wonderful invite to one of my favourite cities. 🙂

  10. 25/05/2011 10:02 am

It’s been 2 years since my last visit to the big apple. I love NY! I want to visit soon and you’re making it so appealing. Thanks for making me rethink that trip and move it up in my priority list.

  11. 25/05/2011 10:57 am

This is a great list. Last summer I did a lot of bike riding to Central and Prospect Park. Every time I get visitors I take them on a walking tour, they are an inexpensive fun way to get a good look at the city. The Big Onion Walking tours are the best! I’ve done at least five different ones already.

  12. 25/05/2011 11:01 am

I would absolutely LOVE to visit NYC! Too bad I don’t have the money to do it at the moment… Some day I will… (dreams on)

  13. 25/05/2011 12:02 pm

I love NYC in the summer! I’m lucky to have a few friends living there, so I can visit cheaply. But I haven’t been there in the summer since 2004, I think.

One of my favorite summer things to do is the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island – I think it’s around the Fourth of July.

Elizabeth, I’m amazed at how detailed you make your daily posts – so much information – how do you manage the time to do this?

  14. 25/05/2011 1:22 pm

I loved NYC last year for the 4 day whirlwind trip my daughter and I took with our choirs to sing at Carnegie Hall…it was wonderful. Memorial weekend…

  15. 25/05/2011 5:38 pm

I grew up an hour from NYC and spent lots of time seeing the sights ~ Battery Park, Empire State Building, Rockefellor Center, plays on Broadway, great dining, Central Park, Russian Tea Room, The Automat, museums, and just . . . people watching.

    Thanks, E!

  16. 25/05/2011 6:38 pm

I have never been to New York ! Maybe one day. The photos are beautiful, as always your enthusiasm and inspiration never fails to inspire something within. Great post !!

  17. 25/05/2011 7:14 pm

I was born in Manhattan and grew up there and in Brooklyn. 🙂 So your great photos bring back lots of memories. The best is probably the one of the bridge in Central Park…we used to picnic there all the time. But I can honestly say I don’t miss any of it…for me it is the people, not the place. 🙂
Thanks, Eliz, for an awesome NYC tour!

I’ll probably be heading back to Chicago for a long weekend this summer…and to NH in the fall…but no NYC. 🙁

  18. 25/05/2011 9:01 pm

Great pictures of NYC! My bf and I were there at the end of last summer.. my 2nd time, his first.. we loved it! We went EVERYWHERE.. biggest thing was to bring comfortable shoes since we walked everywhere!

I’ve definitely been thinking about going back some time soon again.. 🙂

    Great list, Elizabeth!
I forgot about Coney Island, my favorite Friday night hangout. Love watching the fireworks!

  20. 26/05/2011 4:01 am

My brother used to live n New Jersey & my son, 15 at the time, went to NJ to stay with his Aunt & Uncle for a few days one fall. He was told to make a list of things he wanted to see in NYC. My brother managed to squeeze in all the things he wanted to do & then some! My son is now in LOVE with NYC.

    • 26/05/2011 4:25 am

Ah! Lucky kid… Your brother must have gone into overdrive to accomplish the task because there is so much to do/see. Thanks for stopping by… Will return the favor of a visit to your blog. 🙂

  21. 26/05/2011 4:50 am

You’ve actually almost made me keen to visit! Are you getting a commission from the tourist industry? 😆

All this talk of summer and we are into winter – not officially yet, 5 more days to go, but today was certainly on the cold end of the spectrum!

  22. 26/05/2011 9:40 am

Oh, I miss NYC! My last visit there was in the 90’s. I’ve been wanting to go back. It is a beautiful place!

  23. 26/05/2011 1:47 pm

Perfect place for street photography 🙂 !!! Always busy and diverse!!!

    • 27/05/2011 9:55 pm

So true! You nailed it as there is always something to capture in NYC. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, I will return the visit. 🙂

  24. 26/05/2011 3:24 pm

oh how i love NYC. i haven’t been in a few years and I’m way overdue. You’ve just made me miss it even more.

    • 27/05/2011 9:54 pm

Well, come visit us again. It is a beautiful city and yes… if overdue do come. Thanks for your visit. Will stop by to say hello. 🙂

  25. 29/05/2011 12:24 am

Love how you wrote about summer Do’s, and in NYC too! I’ve never been there, but I really want to. Now even more with these pictures!!

    • 29/05/2011 12:29 am

Thank you Jackie. I hope you find time to visit; you’ll enjoy it too. 🙂

  26. 19/07/2011 4:46 am

you are a writer, Elizabeth, psychologist, practicing yoga and meditation, supporting my daily motivation to write – what more? But maybe, if you are walking through the streets in the Bronx or SoHo or Greenwich Village, simply use the shutter of a pocket camera?
