Love is a wondrous thing and, on Valentine’s Day, lovers meet, bearing gifts and sweet words. Every year, some ask the same question: Why show such effusive love only on the 14th? Why is no lover coming for me? As much as we love the festivities, Valentine’s Day can bring up painful memories of unrequited love, shattered dreams and long gone lovers… Do you remember your first Valentine? Your happiest Valentine? Your saddest one? No matter what memories we hold, they all count for something and add to our treasure box of life stories that we carry with us; sometimes as scars, sometimes as sacred events. Our treasure box is precious, and needs refueling but, some of us forget to take care of ourselves as we run around attending to others. How can we learn and grow?

On V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, 2.14.13, we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. V-Day wants the world to see our collective strength, our numbers, our solidarity across borders.

Today is the 15th anniversary of V-Day – a global movement to end violence against women and girls. In conjunction with this anniversary is the launch of One Billion Rising which encourages women to stand up, walk out, speak out, rise up, and demand an end to violence. This day of love is as good a day to bring this topic to the fore. This is important to becoming stronger and maintaining self love. More below.

Stop All Criticism.          Forgive Yourself.
Don’t Scare Yourself.     Be Gentle and Kind and Patient.
Be Kind to Your Mind.    Praise Yourself.
Recently, I read an article “Do You Love Yourself?” by inspirational author Louise Hay. In the article, Louise offers twelve important tools/tips on self love that we can use to help us grow. They are powerful, common sense, self explanatory tips (See first set of six above), and this is the perfect time to add them to our daily routine. We spend so much time trying to get others to love us, we forget to praise, love or be kind to ourselves.  If our tank is empty, and we spend time criticizing every fault,  terrorizing ourselves with negative thoughts, we cannot love others fully, therefore, self care is imperative.
