Back to Blogging: Finding our way via Twitter Images...

This week, my sistahs at The SITS Girls site have suggested some great ways to get our blogging shoes back on. For the entire week, we are to follow the prompts below, dig deep into our blogmunition and share the results by linking our post with others in our SITS Girls community.

I’ve adapted the assignment to make it into an ongoing updated post so my responses to Monday through Wednesday will be below. Thursday and perhaps Friday will be individualized each day. What do you think about the offerings? What are your memories of your blogging moments as per the prompts? Do Tell.

“The ease and appeal of blogging is inspiring a new group of writers and creators to share their voices with the world.”~ Unknown

Back to Blogging: Making Connections anyway... via beespace

Here are the Topics & my Responses:

Monday, September 13: Re-upload the first post you ever wrote on your blog. If interested, re-write that post, showing us a before and after look at the piece.
Day One

My first post was a tame attempt to get a grasp of a new medium of communication… I took the ubiquitous WordPress “Hello World!” sticky page and wrote something, added no visuals and sent it into the stratosphere… Yeah, many moons later, it is still there as my welcome page. I might add a picture now… I don’t know. 🙂

How has your blog evolved since the beginning?
My first post was: Hello World!
I started blogging in November 2008 and it was a fairly long piece without images. I wrote one post a month until I took Problogger’s 31 Days to Build a Better Blog – 31DBBB course in April of 2009 and then made the commitment to write a weekly post. A lot has transpired since then including my revamping an old Blogger blog; watching the ebb and flow of my blog traffic, and having to remind myself why I do it anyway. I don’t regret doing it though there are things I would change and continue to change…

If you could go back to the beginning of your blog and change something about it would you? What would you change?
If I could go back and change anything on my blog, it would be to give it a full fledged name with the domain bought and solid. WordPress has been phenomenal to me and I have grown with them and love every minute of it. I just know that to explore all the arenas a blog can grow in, I would need to do more with probably a self-hosted WordPress blog. I’m still looking for an expert who has integrated both to help me make the move. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Tuesday, September 14: Re-upload a post you wish more people had read and explain why it was important to you.
Day Two

Every time we write a post, we believe that others will enjoy the content as much as we did gathering and reflecting on our ideas. There are posts we write that surprisingly draw loads of interest and then there are others that don’t. If I had to choose a post/two posts that I wished more people had read, it would be my Sweet Sensations African Divas I and II posts. I put together some of Africa’s finest female talent and added music from their most successful albums and did a lot of research for each lady. I would love for you to sample the musical talent and get a taste of a special musical genre. You wont be disappointed. Here they are: Posts I wish more had read will have to be my Sweet Sensations I: African Divas Sing and Sweet Sensations II: African Divas Sing

What posts have you debated writing because the topic made you feel vulnerable? Anything health related or deeply family related is a no-go zone for me. I just don’t see the point in letting everything about our lives be fodder for consumption. If others choose to go there then that’s their prerogative. There are topics that benefit us all and we can share them. I can talk about myself but I respect my family’s privacy.

How do you feel when you publish a post that is important to you? Each post is like birthing a child and I agonize over each one; checking and re-checking to make sure I catch all the typos and any other mistakes with content and links. I can chuckle about it now as it’s really my neurosis. I care about my posts but need to ease up on my approach. I can stand to let some of my concerns go.

How long does it take to write a post like that? Almost all my posts take time – several hours because I do some research, look for pictures and review the content. I am obviously aware that a free flowing post would be perfectly fine and that is one of my goals for this year. I have already started posting more than once a week and I am now working on having quick posts. Not there quite yet.

What is stopping you from publishing a post that makes you vulnerable? I do take on some subjects that are close to the sleeve and touch our hearts but I am careful to monitor the way I react to situations. As I said somewhere, Bloggers have an important role to play in the blogosphere and we must remember to wield our words with compassion. We all have the power of the human spirit to heal and to hurt one another. The latter is a dangerous option. With cyber bullying and the level of meanness I’ve seen on the internet, who needs to go there, really … ? Not me.

Wednesday, September 15: Re-upload a post with a title that you are particularly proud of and explain why.
Day Three

Which comes first? The title or the content of the post? I’ve read many opinions on the subject and I know that there isn’t one true answer to that question. For some, the title is first and then the content. For others, it’s the reverse or a blend of both. For me, I need to have a sense of where I am going with a post before I give it a title and then, I rework it a few times. There are posts that have what I consider perfect titles and then others that just don’t quite connect.

One of my favorite title posts,Heartbreak Hotel: Scattering Stars Like Dust, is the one I wrote for a very sad occasion; Michael Jackson’s death. I wrote the post the day after Michael and Farrah Fawcett died. I was sad and shocked and picked a song that I loved for years and that brought me good memories. I named part of the post for the favorite MJ song and the other half of the post came from a quote by the mystic poet Rumi. I still hold both dear.

Here it is: Heartbreak Hotel: Scattering Stars Like Dust Three other post titles I loved were Ten Tips For the ardent job-seeker, All aTwitter and The Lady Gaga one below is fun. From Lady Gaga to Storm King- It’s All Art…

What type of blog post titles do you find most engaging?
Witty titles or even funny and whimsical post titles make me smile… They always look easy to write but they are not at all.
Do you have a post title you’d like to go back and change? Why?
I am still thinking about this one because I labor over my titles and once I decide, I stick with it.

Do you optimize for SEO when crafting your title?
When I write my blog posts, I am focused on finding a name that fits the content of the post. I am learning certain things to do/not do if I want my blog optimized but honestly, it is a work in progress for me. I am re-reading the tips given on how to improve our blog seo; I believe it is an important tool for blogging and one that still leaves many of us in eyes-glazed-over mood.

One of the benefits of the week of back2blogging is that there are generous prices given by three sponsors; Standards of Excellence, Westar and Florida Builders, and bloggers can be selected to win them. Check out the SITS Girls site if you wish to join in the fun.

To Follow:
Thursday, September 16: Write a new post about a woman who inspires you. (As an example, you can see Mama Kat’s recent Women Who Inspire post here.)
Day Four

Who is someone you find inspiring? What is it about them?
There are so many who have led the way in my life including my mom, grandmas, aunts and sisters; blood relatives and otherwise. I cherish and honor them daily in my prayers and my heart. There is no time that I ever imagine not having their divine wisdom in my life. Through it all, we also find ways to honor others who have touched our lives.
Today, I chose to honor a friend who took the pain of suicide and channeled it into saving others lives. My post is called : From Anguish to Activism: A Mother’s Journey to Get Your Wellness On!

Friday, September 17: As your last assignment to jump start your return to blogging, write about what blogging means to you. Why do you blog? What purpose does it serve you and how have you benefited from sharing a piece of yourself online this way?
Day Five

Do you feel that blogging changed your life?
Blogging has added another dimension to my life and given me a chance to express myself in a public space, warts and all, and to make new friends… I would say the same for all social media platforms that I have been exposed to. I am still learning a lot about this medium; so much to learn, so little time!
How did your life change or in what ways? Honestly, I would not say my life changed, it’s been enhanced. The rhythm of my life remains the same and I continue to re-frame my blogging purpose and learn new ways of communicating.
Would you advocate that your children blog? Absolutely. My children have varied interests and one of them started blogging for a journalism assignment. The other is a published author and is not interested in blogging… an interesting topic for further discussion. Yes, they are free to explore this medium. The only rule is respect family privacy.
If your children begin to blog, how do you think their lives will be changed? One does and It won’t change her life substantially.
Why? Because our children are growing up in a world that is supremely exposed to multimedia channels, a surfeit of digital media, enough www information overload to make our brains explode, and tremendous access to tools that keep their minds and hands busy as they channel surf and multitask while texting, skyping, gaming, chatting, blogging, Googling, and eating lunch.
The next generation of kids will need microchips in their heads if we don’t find a way to get back to walks in the park…
It’s a generational difference and the breadth and depth of information is a lot for me already! I cherish blogging and their generation says – what’s the next big multi media innovation?

Having said that, I have shared two posts below that give some insights into why blogging matters to me… I am enjoying the process and learning a lot from it; it’s been quite humbling too.

From Lady Gaga to Storm King: It’s All Art…

It’s All Art: From Lady Gaga to Storm King…

“To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits: logic and common sense will only interfere. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.” Giorgio de Chirico

Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance

2010 MTV Video Music AwardsMore VMA Video

I watched the Video Music Awards with my teens tonight and was quite impressed by the way Lady Gaga handled the event… Chelsea Handler (you gotta love her) did a great hosting job and kept things moving in a fresh and fun way, while Lady Gaga added her special brand of the fantastically entertaining. Of course, the icing on the cake was the fact that she walked away with eight awards including the coveted Moonman for Video of the Year for “Bad Romance.” Eminen won a few well deserved awards and Justin Bieber won for Best New Artist… Is he still considered new?

As for Lady Gaga, that eccentric, creative, stormy lady has come a long way since her salad days in NY, performing at rock concerts in Manhattan’s Lower Eastside; sometimes with performance artist Lady Starlight. I admire her gumption because, at least, she’s pushing the envelope at full tilt and damn the consequences. Add to it that she is talented and wears the most out-there clothes, excluding meat dresses, with a certain daring and NY swagger; I, for one, definitely like the lady and her music.

Storm King: Circling the sculptures part 2

For some reason and please don’t even ask, as I watched her prance around on stage, I imagined her needing far more space than the confines of the event location could withstand… Where else, in the beautiful state of New York, can this outrageous creative creature spread her wings and still be relevant? Where would her sculptural, over the top outfits blend into the landscape and still be aesthetically beautiful?

As I thought about it, another show I watched today popped into my mind and, Voila! I could see the lady at the mountain… namely the beautifully landscaped, with enormous, sculptural art open air museum in Mountainville, NY – Storm King Art Center. Have you ever been to Storm King Art Center?

“Though I am often in the depths of misery, there is still calmness, pure harmony and music inside me. I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest corners. And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum.” Vincent Van Gogh

Maya Lin’s Wave Field

Known fondly and locally as Storm King, this remarkable 500 acres of undulating hills and beautifully positioned giant large-scale sculptures is home to some of the best outdoor artistic installations by both modern masters like Alexander Calder (the Arch), Henry Moore (Reclining Figure), Richard Serra (Schunnemunk Fork),, and Louise Nevelson (City on the High Mountain), and by contemporary sculptors such as Andy Goldsworthy (Storm King Wall), Alice Aycock (Three-Fold Manifestation II), Alexander Liberman (Adam), and Roy Lichtenstein (Mermaid); including the most recent addition of Maya Lin’s installation – “Storm King Wavefield.”

It’s a wonderful get away for a day filled with nature and art; beautiful, monumental art displayed in nature… Take a trip out there and perhaps, it will all make sense. You know, the Lady Gaga connection. Perhaps she could give an open air, outdoor performance with her magnificent wardrobe as installations. Enjoy!

How do you view artistic display? What ‘s your take on Lady Gaga? Storm King? The creative use of other outdoor spaces?
I would love to hear from you: Please leave me a comment. Thank You!

Defining Freedom: Five Key Ways We Express & Abuse It…

09/09/2010

Protecting Our Freedom: Five We Must Never Give Up…

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Freedom means the opportunity to be what we never thought we would be.” Daniel Boorstin

Defining Freedom: Let Freedom Ring - Martin Luther King, Jr

Most law-abiding people, especially those who live in democratic societies, where laws and protections prevail, rarely think about the notion of freedom. They take it for granted because they already have it and until someone or something happens that impinges on their freedom, it is never a consideration. In the USA, the Bill of Rights gives us certain inalienable rights and it is our prerogative to protect or abuse it.

For people who live under oppressive governments or in restrictive environments; those in prison or living under abject poverty and other forms of restrictions, the idea of gaining freedom is a constant thought; as close as our breath. Yet, as I mull over this, I recognize that we can only miss freedom if we know what it looks like or if we have experienced it. Unless you realize you are living under oppressive conditions, how could you protest? Sure, exposure to mass media helps .. only if you have access to it. In some of the poorest parts of our world, a radio is a luxury.

There is a third category of people who feel neither bound by apparent restrictions or limited by rules because they have transcended our human notion of freedom. They function in a space beyond our everyday comprehension and are in a state of Zen; a spiritual awareness of being one with God; in union with all things.

Mama's Losin' It

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” Thomas Jefferson. In memory of the lives lost on 9/11… Prayers and Blessings to All.

This week’s prompt is: Define “Freedom”. As I thought about this Thursday’s assignment, I envisioned a subject that, like an eagle, soars above and beyond our simple definitions and flies with wings in many directions; indefatigable, digging deep for new meanings.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary offers a multi part definition of the word Freedom. The main one being: Freedom is the quality or state of being free; the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action. It also suggests that: Freedom has a broad range of applications from total absence of restraint to merely a sense of not being unduly hampered or frustrated.

In civil societies, our freedom is only guaranteed if we obey the rules of law and stay within the confines of acceptable behavior. Anytime we step outside that fine line/norm, we risk being held in contempt of the status quo. Think about it; are we truly free to express our idiosyncrasies anywhere or anytime? Probably not. Over the years, there have been brave souls who stood firm in their beliefs and that is how new laws, creative expression, religious and political freedoms and more were achieved… However, the journey is often strewn with casualties; the bodies of the flag bearers of every important movement. The norm for the rest of us has been a freedom that is measured, tied to obligations and expectations — never totally free.

“Freedom of speech and freedom of action are meaningless without freedom to think. And there is no freedom of thought without doubt.” Bergen Evans

On Freedom: A Poster on Perils

So what are the five ways we express and lose our freedom?
When I first wrote this piece, I looked at it through the lens of the Bill of Rights; an American perspective. Upon reflection, I recognized that the five freedoms below are not a universal construct but rights available to Americans. In other parts of the world, the five freedoms or the fight for them might look somewhat different; economic freedom, freedom of movement, educational freedom, freedom to choose over a variety of complex cultural mandates, political and personal freedoms… the list is endless. How would people from other cultures interpret the freedoms/liberties below? Are they as ubiquitous as we think?

Freedom of Expression/Speech: We use our freedom of speech to uplift and sometimes malign others. The ability to speak our mind without fear of reprisal is one to be cherished. However, we must treat that right as sacrosanct and refrain from abusing it by engaging in vicious attacks against those whose views we don’t share. Freedom of expression includes our right to creative endeavors in music, arts, and other forms of entertainment. When we express ourselves creatively and for the highest good, it is a soothing balm that brings people together and heals. Even this freedom has it limitations … unpopular opinions, even when true, are not appreciated in certain circles; our words co-opted by our political and professional allegiances.

Inevitably, there are those who use it (speech) to spread hate and fear… When lines are crossed, we enter the realm of defamation; libelous (the written) and slanderous (the spoken) words. When we attack others maliciously, our language ceases to be complimentary or wise, it becomes poisonous venom sprayed on our opponent. A lawsuit and a restraining order puts a muzzle on those who feel compelled to talk carelessly … and ostracism is the lot of those who choose to speak the truth in the face of company sanctioned lies.

We often hear or read the line that “You can’t legislate people’s thoughts.” True. Freedom of speech opens a false door for us to believe we can say whatever we want; it doesn’t dictate what we say or interfere with our ability to think. We can think and say what we like as long as those thoughts and words aren’t deemed offensive or don’t become harmful actions. What internal triggers stops us from crossing the line and why?

Freedom of Religion: This is self-explanatory, yet many forget that the freedom we enjoy is a right for everyone else too. Religious extremists tend to ignore the rights of others to practice their beliefs and they barrel on as if all other faiths are irrelevant. This right is inherent to all religious traditions, and we ought to respect every individual’s right to practice their beliefs.

The same passion I bring to my beliefs is no different than that shared by someone of another religious persuasion. When we abuse religious freedoms, we impugn the ability of others to pursue their faith, and we perpetuate violence where peace should reign. If we look around the areas of conflict in the world today, religious intolerance plays a role in feeding the fires of petty hatreds and war. What stands in the way of common sense?

George Michael – Freedom

Freedom of the Press: The press has a huge responsibility to speak truth to power and represent our collective needs through that medium. People depend on information disseminated from our press/the media and there is an expectation that it is fair and objective. This is not always the case and we all know of news reports that are biased, incomplete and inaccurate. The internet has made it both difficult and easy to ascertain the merits of a story. Spin masters and bloggers have added another dimension to what we might gingerly call the truth. News moves fast and the stories change rapidly… fact and fiction blurs; we hope we are hearing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the whole damn truth.

Celebrities and others have sued media outlets that invaded their privacy or shared false stories and the penalties can be huge. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to deter certain elements of the media that continue this practice of spreading false stories. Why? Because there are publishers that continue to bankroll the purveyors of celebrity news. Fortunately, there are multiple sources of news and we can pick and choose who/what we want to hear. The key is to check multiple sources before confirming the veracity of a story.

“You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” Malcolm X

Defining Freedom: Flying in the Face of Dissent

Freedom of Association/Assembly: The right to congregate and meet over common issues of interest is an important right because it allows political parties, congregations, clubs, and people with common concerns to form or find a forum for their cause. It can be a powerful tool for the activists amongst us; serving as a way to rally people behind a cause. Naturally, there are those who use the right of assembly to propagate hate and fear. They create associations that abuse the rights of others or that disseminate false information.

The freedom of association/assembly also includes freedom of movement without being/feeling policed. Sadly, people in marginalized communities do not fully enjoy this freedom because their neighborhoods are considered unsafe and are therefore heavily supervised. We have all read newspaper articles of random searches and other abuses. When we look around our communities, are all groups treated equitably and freely? These prejudicial patterns can be stopped with more education and a clear headed approach to conflict resolution.

Freedom of Choice to Protect Self/Right to Bear Arms: This is a freedom that should make sense yet there are issues around the right to bear arms. We are free to protect our loved ones from harm and to choose how we exercise those rights. However; the area of contention arises from the right to bear arms; especially by criminal elements and those who might not choose to use it safely. Again, when people use their right to intimidate others or commit crimes, they are no longer acting to protect their loved ones. Their intent is to abuse others and the consequences can lead to additional restrictions and possible jail time.

At the end of the day, we are only as free as we are allowed to be; within the confines of the law… According to Article 21 of the Constitution, – No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law. We won’t be deprived until we break the law; so we learn social mores that help us avoid the kinds of behavior that could make us lose our freedoms. Our human freedom is based on conditions. While spiritual freedom can seemingly transcend all others, we still operate from a human realm bound by laws and therein lies the quandary. Our freedoms can be enjoyed or denied… the choice isn’t always ours to make.

What are your thoughts? Which is the most important freedom of them all? If you had to give up a freedom, which one would you give away? Do share. Thank you!
