Weekly Photo Challenge: QUEST

23/09/2016

“The longest journey is the journey inwards. Of him who has chosen his destiny, Who has started upon his quest for the source of his being.” Dag Hammarskjold

The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning. Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his powers. Erich Fromm
Everything you possess of skill, and wealth, and handicraft, wasn’t it first merely a thought and a quest? Jalaluddin Rumi
Not all those who wander are lost. J.R.R. Tolkien

For this challenge on – QUEST – I thought I’d venture down a few paths I’ve taken over the last couple of months/years. I love to hike and take walks to clear my head and refocus my thoughts on my daily tasks. I often venture out with an idea or two percolating in my mind but, as the journey/hike/walk progresses and my feet develop a meditative rhythm, new ideas bubble up. The fascinating thing about the meaning of the word QUEST is that it entails a search for something more; the holy grail, happiness, love, and even the unknown. If we already know the outcome of our journey, it would no longer be a Quest. So even something as mundane as a daily walk is a quest for clarity; a quest for new discoveries and a quest for improved health … It’s a journey inwards to ourselves and all add meaning to our lives.

“The great quest of life has always been to discover truth.” Joyce Meyer

Man of La Mancha – Musical by Dale Wasserman
Lyricist: Joe Darion
Quotes via Goodreads
“It is the mission of each true knight…
His duty… nay, his privilege!
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go;
To right the unrightable wrong.

To love, pure and chaste, from afar,
To try, when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star!

This is my Quest to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far,
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause!

And I know, if I’ll only be true
To this glorious Quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach the unreachable stars!”

Just like the Man of La Mancha, we set out on this journey we call life, looking for answers and a better understanding of our purpose here on earth… We want the truth (truth that speaks to each of us personally) and we are willing to work hard at arriving there. The journey is often fraught with challenges, missteps and varying degrees of difficult. Interspersed throughout our lives are bright spots, happy memories and successes that spur us on. Our quest doesn’t have to meander in many directions but, it is worth the path and journey we take… go find yours.

“The eternal quest of the individual human being is to shatter his loneliness.” Norman Cousins

Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It is a pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough – that we should try again. Julia Cameron
The spiritual quest is not some added benefit to our life, something you embark on if you have the time and inclination. We are spiritual beings on an earthly journey. Our spirituality makes up our beingness. John Bradshaw

As the popular saying goes, we come into this world naked and alone, and we leave it the same way. In the interim, we spend our lives reaching, searching for that special part of our being… Cousins calls it the shattering of our loneliness… others have called it by many other names. What is your quest?

Have a restful weekend!

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post:  QUEST  For this week’s challenge, show us what quest means to you. For this challenge theme, quest, I’m drawn more to the anticipation of the experience — the buildup, the unknown — as seen in this shot. And the quest wasn’t just physical; this was an activity, an adventurous icebreaker of sorts, through which we could meet and learn more about each other.

Positive Motivation Tip: We spend our lives on a quest to our true selves…
