Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; A mother’s secret hope outlives them all. Oliver Wendell Holmes
Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws. Barbara Kingsolver
When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. Sophia Loren

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Mother’s Day is a special day we celebrate this month too. It’s been a while since I posted because life has been incredibly hectic behind the scenes. The pandemic changed our lives in so many ways, and learning to go with the flow is imperative. I decided to make the extra effort to add a post because both topics matter to me… Taking care of our mental health and nurturing ourselves are two crucial steps we all need to take during this season. While many of us have gotten vaccinated, we are not entirely out of the woods with Covid19. It rages on in many parts of the world, and our prayers, support, and vigilance are required. The confluence of Mother’s Day and Mental Health Awareness is significant because both are about nurturing and healing ourselves. Both demand compassion, patience, and support. Let’s lift the stigma and seek the care we need. How are you coping? How are you nurturing yourself and your loved ones? How are you protecting your mental health?

Musings: In My Mother’s Garden…

After a While Attributed to Jorge Luis Borges
(revised and copyrighted by Veronica Shoffstall)

After a while, you learn
The subtle difference between
Holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t always mean security.

And you begin to learn
That kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes ahead
With the grace of a woman
Not the grief of a child

And you learn
To build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is
Too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way
Of falling down in mid-flight

After a while, you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much
So you plant your own garden
And decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers

And you learn
That you really can endure
That you are really strong
And you really do have worth
And you learn, and you learn
With every goodbye, you learn.

My Mother by Ann Taylor
Who sat and watched my infant head
When sleeping on my cradle bed,
And tears of sweet affection shed?
My Mother.

When pain and sickness made me cry,
Who gazed upon my heavy eye,
And wept for fear that I should die?
My Mother.

Who taught my infant lips to pray
And love God’s holy book and day,
And walk in wisdom’s pleasant way?
My Mother.
Affectionate and kind to thee,
Who wast so very kind to me,
My Mother?

Ah, no! the thought I cannot bear,
And if God please my life to spare
I hope I shall reward they care,
My Mother.

When thou art feeble, old and grey,
My healthy arm shall be thy stay,
And I will soothe thy pains away,
My Mother. Poem by Ann Taylor via poemhunter.com

Children are the anchors that hold a mother to life. Sophocles
Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. Kahlil Gibran
I remember my Mothers prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all of my life… Abraham Lincoln
God may be in the details, but the goddess is in the questions. Once we begin to ask them, there’s no turning back. Gloria Steinem

Happy Mother’s Day: When I think of Mother’s Day, my memories are of events and conversations shared with family and friends with a few strangers added to the mix. Mothering is not always easy, so those memories are equally mixed with sadness and joy, elation and deflation, pleasure and pain. My Mom was an avid gardener, and her gardens were rich with vibrant colors and teeming with life. Mom had her challenges, too, and bore them with grace. Another bittersweet aspect of Mother’s Day for me is that my Dad passed away on the 9th of May. So even though it’s been over a decade, every Mother’s Day brings back memories of his influence on my life. I miss them both.

As a mom, I’ve inherited some of my Mom’s ways and struggled to let go of other aspects of that inheritance. As we grow into our own version of Motherhood, we see glimpses of the past, and we come to recognize how we have become our mothers in so many ways. We strive for the best version of that vision and surrender the rest to the universe. It is a precious job, and for that, I celebrate all Moms this month. What memories do you hold dear? What memories do you let go of? Enjoy the posts and poems I’ve added above and below. May they speak to your heart as they have spoken to mine.

My Mother Kept A Garden by Kelly Z.
My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life its start.
She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem…
And when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enough-
But not too much because she knew
I’d need to stand up strong and tough.
Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong-
Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.
I am my Mother’s garden.
I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me.

God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. Rudyard Kipling
To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow. Maya Angelou
[Motherhood is] the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary, it’s an act of infinite optimism. Gilda Radner
Grown don’t mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown. In my heart, it don’t mean a thing. Toni Morrison

Mental Health Awareness Month: When we think about what we are grateful for, it is effortless to consider our family first. Family is supreme; family is divine; family is our foundation. True, but we need to stop and think about what comes before family? Life, breath, love, health, desire, and effort to sustain all are key elements that help us shape our family history, and mental health is at the forefront of that conversation.  Without our health, especially our mental health, everything else falls into the background, and life becomes a blur, a dark hole, an abyss. It is critical not to sweep these conversations under the rug when our loved ones are suffering or when we ourselves need help. During this season of transition from lockdowns to a gradual return to life as we once knew it, make time for reflection, self-care, and check in regularly with loved ones. More on this later… Happy Mothering. Happy Mother’s Day Every Day!

What is the greatest gift? by Mary Oliver

What is the greatest gift?
Could it be the world itself — the oceans, the meadowlark,
the patience of the trees in the wind?
Could it be love, with its sweet clamor of passion?

Something else — something else entirely
holds me in thrall.
That you have a life that I wonder about
more than I wonder about my own.
That you have a life — courteous, intelligent —
that I wonder about more than I wonder about my own.
That you have a soul — your own, no one else’s —
that I wonder about more than I wonder about my own.
So that I find my soul clapping its hands for yours
more than my own.

Motherhood is the noblest profession any woman can ever do in her life. I was blessed with the kindest, most caring mother, but she passed away 2 years ago. Mother’s day will never be the same without her. But I take her as my inspiration. I may not even measure up to her standards, but I am doing my best.

Being a mother is a lot like planting a garden. You sow the seeds of what you hope, only to find out you’ve been given an edible plant. One that nourishes others they touch.

I lost my mother last March 2020. She died at the hospital with just me by her side. So these past 2 mother’s days have been strange for me. I am in general a free spirit who never needed to call my mother all the time or even visit. But I always knew she was there waiting to hear my stories, push me to grow, and encourage my life as an adventurer!
To me, Maya Angelou’s quote best summed up my mother perfectly!
“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.”

My mother was not the greatest mom, but she did what she could with what she had. I appreciate her for that, but everything she did that scarred her children is everything I will not be doing to mine. She was my first teacher and what I learned was how NOT to be a mother.
