HAPPY THANKSGIVING: On November 26, we will celebrate our very first pandemic thanksgiving, and most of us will observe the rules of social distancing, gathering with only our closest family, and having smaller/quieter meals. We live in unprecedented times, the world is being ravaged by the scourge of Covid-19 – the Coronavirus that reared its ugly head in late 2019 and continues to decimate communities around the globe. While so many of us are grateful for life and the chance to share a meal with our nearest and dearest family, we must all remember to send our prayers, virtual hugs, and well wishes to all who lost loved ones this year. It’s going to be an extraordinarily tough year for so many folks and our support and compassion will go a long way.
Typically, this season is a heightened time of anxiety and stress for people as we juggle gathering with family and friends and trying to figure out who to stay away from or how to complete work-related tasks. This year is different because we won’t be gathering with everyone but the stress and anxiety remain for a slew of reasons that include whether to celebrate at all, and how to handle financial, health, and social distancing concerns. My advice is to keep it simple. Spend more time in a spirit of gratitude and consider offering donations to those in need.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING? This year, I won’t have my usual Thanksgiving gathering with my family because we are scattered across the NorthEast, and social distancing and safety precautions dictate that we keep it simple until the vaccine is distributed and the coast is clear. We will chat by phone or Zoom, send virtual blessings to each other and keep our fingers crossed and hearts ready for a Christmas get-together instead. I won’t be able to volunteer to serve at a food pantry, soup kitchens, or shelter either because of the pandemic so, I made a donation instead at my local Stop and Shop so food can be delivered to families in need. There are other ways we can help as many charities like Feeding America, America’s Food Fund, God’s Love We Deliver, our local charities, and even more, you can find through Charity Navigator, need our support this season.
On Thanksgiving Day, I will share a meal with one of my kids who has been home with me since April. We decided to order Chef Chloe Coscarelli’s Vegan Meal for 2 from Whole Foods. The menu is quite tasty and includes an impressive serving of the following foods: Cremini Mushroom Roast Loaf, Mushroom Gravy, Miso Creamed Greens, Coconut Sweet Potato Casserole, Jalapeño Cornbread Dressing, and Pumpkin Curry Soup. For dessert, we will give the Scarlett Pie a try and wash it down with sparkling water. No alcohol here. No turkey either. I know… it’s really okay. We will share a few stories, give lots of thanks for our meal, and maybe watch a movie. The TWO operative words for this season are GRATITUDE and SIMPLICITY. What about you? WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? As Thanksgiving Day draws near, I am reminded to express joy for the daily gifts and simplest things that make me thankful for each breath I take. I look around me and see the sparkle in people’s eyes and the hopefulness shared by many for this season. We are still in a global pandemic and there is a lingering sense of instability. It is imperative that we appreciate our daily gifts and name them with a grateful heart. As nature sheds the remnants of the summer and settles down into hibernation for winter, I am struck by the beautiful hues of purple, red, brown, and orange/gold pulling me in. For a moment, I am transported to a place of deep joy and gratitude. Again, as we all prepare to enjoy our thanksgiving meals, let’s not forget these important Thanksgiving Tips: Share our Thanksgiving History/Heritage, Give thanks/Be grateful, Practice food safety, and Gather informative and Covid-19 safe travel tips. Thanksgiving and Gratitude are key themes this season. We can add Simplicity and Compassion too.
What Gifts Do You Value Most? While I know that gratitude and thanksgiving are year-round qualities, however, the point of this special day is to remind us all of what we value most. I value The gift of life, the gift of gratitude, the gift of health, the gift of time and memories, the gift of love, the gift of speech, the gift of family, friends, and people we meet, the gift of faith & food, the gift of a sound mind, the gift of writing, the gift of choice, the gift of community & service, and the gift of God’s immutable grace. The holidays will definitely be different this year. We did a very small “Friendsgiving” last weekend with only two families that we see often because of school and scouts. But it’s stopped us from seeing some of the friends we would normally see, so a bit of motivation and positivity is needed this year.
We kept it super small here. Better safe than sorry was our motto. Next year will be better for everyone. Amen!

There are a lot of beautiful poems here that I’ve never heard or read before, it is neat to see so many of them about Thanksgiving.
Wow! So much emotion on this page! I agree, Thanksgiving is going to be very different this year, but there are even more reasons to be thankful. Our eyes have been opened to just how great we have it and how much worse it could be. I am thankful to be an American with the freedoms I hold, grateful to be able to spend time with family, and truly blessed to be able to have food on my table. Praying for all those who have been devastated by the virus.
I will definitely be reading some of these poems at our Thanksgiving this year. Thank you for taking the time to compile this great resource!

This Thanksgiving season has been eye opening. I have been reflecting on this past year and was amazed to find the slivers of good even in the bad times. I have been thanking God for the trials as I watch Him working through me.

I love all of these poems! This year, my grandma isn’t have Thanksgiving lunch as usual, but we are still having dinner with my mom and brother’s family because we see them on a regular bases anyway.

It is truly a season to be thankful. 2020 has come with a lot of it’s own baggage but I believe despite everything, we have been able to adapt and make it through the year and for that I am thankful. I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in my country, but I know a lot about it and love the idea of taking a day and a moment to express gratitude.

I must admit that this years it’s a bit difficult to give thanks. It has been such a difficult year without any joy or fun. On the other hand, I’m healthy, have enough financial means – so yes, I can relate to some of those wonderful quotes 😉

Very inspirational. My favourite is the one by anonymous that tells to count our blessing, rather our losses (that was my take on the poem). It’s like an outline for a gratitude list.

Being grateful doesn’t cost us anything, but we gain so much if we are grateful. We feel grateful for blessings, even for mistakes coz mistakes gives us opportunity to be better.
