Motivation 2020: World Kindness Day

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Truth is a deep kindness that teaches us to be content in our everyday life and share with the people the same happiness. Khalil Gibran
Goodness is about character – integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people. Dennis Prager
The mission of the World Kindness Movement (WKM) is to inspire individuals and connect nations to create a kinder world. TheWorldKindnessMovement.org

What does kindness mean to you?  Even though today, November 13, is the official World Kindness Day celebration, it can’t hurt to be reminded during this coming holiday season that kindness is an everyday affair. Each of us can perform acts of kindness to help others. We can share our goodwill with our loved ones, folks in need, strangers, and perform exhilarating random acts of kindness that create ripples of love and harmony around the world. We can share our food, shelter, and even a smile. Every kind act we perform will be multiplied because goodness spreads in a ripple effect that touches many people. Sadly, the same can be said for unkind actions so, choose wisely. In case you’d like to know more, World Kindness Day is the brainchild of the World Kindness Movement which originated in Japan in 1997.  WKM’s purpose remains to bring people and nations together by creating communities of kindness and caring globally.

Today, over 25 nations participate in events organized by TheWorldKindnessMovement, and you can join in and share your goodwill too.  No one is an island unto him/herself and we all benefit from the kindness of others. In a world that has grown rift with violence and anger, we need to remind ourselves, and those around us, to be kind, to be compassionate, and to be grateful. If there is anything we need more of in the world today, we can say that kindness is sorely missing and needed. Kindness should definitely be one of the top 5 on our list. It is up to us to choose to be/act kind. We can start by thinking kind thoughts and matching them with actions that uplift us and others.

Kindness By Naomi Shihab Nye – 1952- via poets.org
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” Lao Tzu

Motivation 2020: Happy Diwali – Festival of Lights

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. Aesop
What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness? Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Mark Twain
Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver. Barbara De Angelis

Who have you shown kindness today?  While we might not always be able to perform random acts of kindness, we can all remember to extend a smile, a kind word, and a conscious act of goodwill to all life forms. Instead of always trying to be first or disrespecting the earth and others around us, we can make a conscious effort to be considerate of all around us. When our acts of kindness are sincere, they water the earth with rich deposits of goodwill that nourish the soil and all who come in contact with it. Give with an open heart and a sincere spirit. What we practice becomes second nature. What we resist persists, and what we remember stays fresh in our hearts. Stay motivated on the path of kindness and it will bear great results for you and all around you. Here’s wishing all a very happy and kind holiday season. Who have you helped today?

How can we find a place for kindness in our hearts and homes? When we open the door to allow kindness to find a place at the center of our lives, it will rise to meet us. We must start wherever we are. It is neither forced nor feigned. When we feel compassion and kindness for those in need, it is our spirit of gratitude shining through. So on this special World Kindness Day, let’s consider as many solid reasons as we can think of to help us get out there and make a difference; begin with a random act of kindness to your fellow man/woman. The spirit of compassion and kindness is always around the corner waiting for us to acknowledge and share it.

HAPPY DIWALI – On another note: I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Diwali – Festival of Lights and the start of a New Year in India. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.” It is often associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, as an expression of joy after Lord Rama returned to Ayodya upon killing the demon Ravana, and as a celebration of many other deities depending on what part of India you come from.

Seeds Of Kindness – Poem by Annabel Cruz via poemhunter
Every seed of kindness
That you plant today
Will one day
Be a bouquet
That they’ll lay
Upon your grave
For no one is loved
For the money that they’ve made
No one is remembered
For the people, they’ve betrayed
It is your thoughtfulness
And kindness
That will live
When you are gone

A Story: Killed By False Kindness
Once upon a time, there were two merchants, who were friends. Both of them were getting ready for business trips to sell their merchandise, so they had to decide whether to travel together. They agreed that, since each had about 500 carts, and they were going to the same place along the same road, it would be too crowded to go at the same time.
One decided that it would be much better to go first. He thought, “The road will not be rutted by the carts, the bullocks will be able to choose the best of all the grass, we will find the best fruits and vegetables to eat, my people will appreciate my leadership and, in the end, I will be able to bargain for the best prices.”
The other merchant considered carefully and realized there were advantages to going second. He thought, “My friend’s carts will level the ground so we won’t have to do any road work, his bullocks will eat the old rough grass and new tender shoots will spring up for mine to eat. In the same way, they will pick the old fruits and vegetables and fresh ones will grow for us to enjoy. I won’t have to waste my time bargaining when I can take the price already set and make my profit.” So he agreed to let his friend go first. This friend was sure he’d fooled him and gotten the best of him – so he set out first on the journey.
The merchant who went first had a troublesome time of it. They came to a wilderness called the ‘Waterless Desert’, which the local people said was haunted by demons. When the caravan reached the middle of it, they met a large group coming from the opposite direction. They had carts that were mud smeared and dripping with water. They had lotuses and water lilies in their hands and the carts. The head man, who had a know-it-all attitude, said to the merchant, “Why are you carrying these heavy loads of water? In a short time, you will reach that oasis on the horizon with plenty of water to drink and dates to eat. Your bullocks are tired from pulling those heavy carts filled with extra water – so throw away the water and be kind to your overworked animals!”
Even though the local people had warned them, the merchant did not realize that these were not real people, but demons in disguise. They were even in danger of being eaten by them. Being confident that they were helping people, he followed their advice and had all his water emptied onto the ground.
As they continued on their way they found no oasis or any water at all. Some realized they’d been fooled by beings that might have been demons and started to grumble and accuse the merchant. At the end of the day, all the people were tired out. The bullocks were too weak from lack of water to pull their heavy carts. All the people and animals lay down haphazardly and fell into a deep sleep. Lo and behold, during the night the demons came in their true frightening forms and gobbled up all the weak defenseless beings. When they were done there were only bones lying scattered around – not one human or animal was left alive. Contd Below! Via Zen Stories on Jataka Tales

When the norm is decency, other virtues can thrive: integrity, honesty, compassion, kindness, and trust. Raja Krishnamoorthi
When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It is as though something inside your body responds and says, yes, this is how I ought to feel. Harold Kushner
A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love. Saint Basil

Food for Thought: Be grateful and be kind. We need both to propel us all forward in this world. I remember a favorite teacher saying that the world is sustained by the good and kindness of grateful and mindful people. Even with the darkness and hatred that we see globally, many send out showers of kindness to the world and those souls sustain our planet… Think about it. Our actions don’t have to be huge. A kind and caring effort or word can make a difference too. Something more…  Join the #worldkindnessday movement because by inspiring others & spreading kindness throughout your community, you will bring joy to more folks.

A Story: Killed By False Kindness Contd!
After several months, the second merchant began his journey in the same way. When he arrived at the wilderness, he assembled all his people and advised them – “This is called the ‘Waterless Desert’ and I have heard that it is haunted by demons and ghosts. Therefore we should be careful. Since there may be poison plants and foul water, don’t drink any local water without asking me.” In this way, they started into the desert.
After getting about halfway through, in the same way, as with the first caravan, they were met by the water-soaked demons in disguise. They told them the oasis was near and they should throw away their water. But the wise merchant saw through them right away. He knew it didn’t make sense to have an oasis in a place called ‘Waterless Desert’. And besides, these people had bulging red eyes and an aggressive and pushy attitude, so he suspected they might be demons.
He told them to leave them alone saying, “We are businessmen who don’t throw away good water before we know where the next is coming from.” Then seeing that his own people had doubts, the merchant said to them, “Don’t believe these people,
who may be demons, until we actually find water. The oasis they point to might be just an illusion or a mirage. Have you ever heard of water in this ‘Waterless Desert’? Do you feel any rain-wind or see any storm clouds?” They all said, “No”, and he continued, “If we believe these strangers and throw away our water, then later we may not have any to drink or cook with – then we will be weak and thirsty and it would be easy for demons to come and rob us, or even eat us up! Therefore, until we really find water, do not waste even a drop!”
The caravan continued on its way and, that evening reached the place where the first caravan’s people and bullocks had been killed and eaten by the demons. They found the carts and human and animal bones lying all around. They recognized that the fully-loaded carts and the scattered bones belonged to the former caravan. The wise merchant told certain people to stand to watch around the camp during the night.
The next morning the people ate breakfast and fed their bullocks well. They added to their goods the most valuable things left from the first caravan. So they finished their journey very successfully and returned home safely so that they and their families could enjoy their profits.
The moral is: One must always be wise enough not to be fooled by tricky talk and false appearances. Via Zen Stories on Buddhist Tales – Jataka Stories

Is This Thy Kindness to Thy Friend (Christ a Redeemer and Friend) by John Newton via poeticous
Poor, weak and worthless though I am
I have a rich almighty friend;
Jesus, the Saviour, is His Name;
He freely loves, and without end.

He ransomed me from hell with blood,
And by His pow’r my foes controlled;
He found me wand’ring far from God,
And brought me to His chosen fold.

He cheers my heart, my wants supplies,
And says that I shall shortly be,
Enthroned with Him above the skies;
O what a friend is Christ to me!

But ah! I my inmost spirit mourns,
And well my eyes with tears may swim,
To think of my perverse returns;
I’ve been a faithless friend to him.

Often my gracious Friend I grieve,
Neglect, distrust, and disobey,
And often Satan’s lies believe,
Sooner than all my Friend can say.

He bids me always freely come,
And promises whate’er I ask:
But I am straitened, cold and dumb,
And count my privilege a task.

Before the world that hates his course,
My treach’rous heart has throbbed with shame;
Loth to forego the worlds applause,
I hardly dare avow his name.

Sure were not I most vile and base,
I could not thus my friend requite!
And were not he the God of grace,
He’d frown and spurn me from his sight.

Kindness We Offer by Hasmukh Amathalal via poemhunter
What in return of kindness we offer?
Will it be blessings or simple murmur?
Words may not simply fall or flow?
If it is with affection face will always glow

May it be in form of kiss?
Special offer and gesture from miss
I shall welcome it without any hiss
Who knows it may be real bliss

I shall prefer to live alone
Even if no help from someone
I must accept it with full joy
Even if that is offered with face decoy

Why so much noise is created?
Is there not real love recreated?
Do we sing when someone dear is cremated?
Do we not shed tears even if lamented?

How do we define it in terms and exactly?
Message is conveyed properly and correctly
May it not look so neat and clean?
As heart and mind act together and lean

Why simple kiss creates hornet’s nest?
Is it not the ideal to offer as best?
Why at all it should give nuisance test?
No gossips, no rumors and put them at rest

What difference it makes if offered on forehead
Love and true affection as if spread
All sentiments can simply be read
Fragrance smells all over and spread

Lovers may take as warm welcome
Daughter may feel simply good and awesome
Wife to husband as emerging gesture
Happy moments with glittering future

It took me many years to get over my issues growing up as a child/ teenager to see that kindness and empathy are so much more important than anything in this world. When it was my time I wanted people to remember me for my willingness to always be there for others and let those who are normally not seen, be seen by me. I never treat any one differently. I know what it feels like and would never want anyone to feel that way by my hand.

We’ll never know how much impact kindness can do to others but it’s one way we can show our unconditional love for others. Also reminding myself of this especially during these hard times where we all just need kindness! I love the John Newton poem too. It’s my first time to read that poem, Reminded me of his song Amazing Grace because I just listened to it recently, Thanks for sharing!
