HAPPY FATHER’S DAY: In the USA, Father’s Day falls on June 21 in 2020. This year, with the global pandemic as a looming backdrop to everything we do, we will celebrate Father’s Day with gratitude and gusto. If there is anything that makes valuing our lives and relationships as precious and perhaps ephemeral, this season of great global change is one to remember. Even though my Dad is no longer alive, I have brothers, uncles, inlaws, and friends that I cherish and so that special day would be an opportunity to honor them and all they do. Throughout this post, I’ve shared poems that get to the heart of the matter of what being a father means to so many of us. Yet, I would be remiss if I ignore the fact that some relationships haven’t always been the greatest and that some children have sad and painful memories of their fathers. It is my wish and prayer that, if you belong to that group of kids who felt betrayed by your father, you will find peace, love, and comfort on the road to healing yourself. Don’t despair. The upside is that we can choose partners and/or become better examples of parenting for our loved ones. It is never too late to heal the wounds and betrayals of childhood. Power Of Fatherly Stories: Stories are a great way to document family history and share wisdom words. I grew up listening to great storytellers who were quite adept at weaving a tale in and out for days. We would gather around a small bonfire in the family Obi (meeting room), after dinner, and listen to our elders tell stories of ancestral battles, ancient feats, and invented stories that were pithy with lessons. My memory of those special days remains with me even as I write this post. Stories educate, fortify, and warn us of the perils that could be our lot if we do not step with care and consideration on this planet. Sometimes, I wonder if the art of the griots is lost on our youth … I hope not. Enjoy the story and poems below.

I have just come down from my father.
Higher and higher he lies
Above me in a blue light Shed by a tinted window.
I drop through six white floors
And then step out onto pavement.
Still feeling my father ascend,
I start to cross the firm street,
My shoulder blades shining with all
The glass the huge building can raise.
Now I must turn round and face it,
And know his one pane from the others.
Each window possesses the sun
As though it burned there on a wick.
I wave, like a man catching fire.
All the deep-dyed windowpanes flash,
And, behind them, all the white rooms
They turn to the color of Heaven.
Ceremoniously, gravely, and weakly,

This is a very detailed Father’s Day post I love all this poetry and dedication to Father’s Day
Father’s Day is such an important holiday for me. My dad has always been my rock on all kinds of levels. He’s always been there for me.
I won’t be with my dad on Father’s Day but will see him a few days later. We will celebrate my husband and his dad with a grill out at their pool. It’s not much different than we do every weekend, but it’s what they enjoy.
I love everything about this post. The history behind the day, the poems, the story – they’re all a great way to pay tribute to dads on this special day.

Father’s Day is very difficult for me because I had no relationship with my father and just ended a 29 year old marriage to an abusive husband and father to my kids. So I am happy to hear about others’ much better experiences and celebrate with them. And family friends of course.

Edgar Albert Guest’s Only a Dad is a beautiful poem. My brothers and I have all moved back to our parents’ home during the quarantine and it made me realize how I miss my dad (and mom). We shouldn’t let our busy lives get in the way of spending time with our parents.

In my country we don’t celebrate father’s day. If I were to think of a father figure who had a big impact in my life, that would be my grandfather. Even if he died when I was 11 years old, I will always remember what an amazing person he was and how much care and love he had for me.

I have already gifted my two oldest boys their presents for Father’s Day, and we did it long distance. They live in a hot spot for the coronavirus with cases still rising and we do too, so we’re still playing it safe. Happy Father’s Day to the dads!!

Another lovely post. Father’s Day to me is a lovely ideal. I didn’t have a positive figure in my life. However, I am thankful that my kids have a wonderful father and I have an amazing husband.
This year has been tough to celebrate events without family and friends. I will say that it’s helped us grow closer.

Father’s Day is a bit bittersweet for me as most of my father figures have passed away but I appreciate the fathers that are still currently in my life.
I recently moved from Ohio to North Carolina, so it was the first Father’s Day where I wasn’t able to take my dad to dinner or spend the day with him. I did give him a call, though. Next time I am back visiting, I will treat him to dinner.

I am daddy’s girl totally. my father gave a lot to me, teaching how to work, how to rely on yourself, be myself all the time, encouraged my interests. I loved it when we went to music concerts with him and he danced and jumped as much as I did. Now I enjoy time we spend on a boat together, discussing the whelming and everything

I may use the Robert Hayden poem in my classroom. There’s a lot of learning there and it’s short enough to keep student attention. Poems are hard for them, but this is a good one.
My dad is my biggest supporter. But he also makes it clear that if things got too hard, it’s okay to step back and he’ll catch me. I really appreciated that.

I had to say goodbye to my dad on the age of 22 – he died of colon cancer at 47

I agree, Father’s Day really matters. Especially to those who really deserve it. Tho as often as I can , I’m telling and showing to my husband how good is he being a father to our wee one, we still celebrated Father’s Day at home.
We used to eat out for Father’s Day celebration but due to pandemic we choose to stayed at home and decided to celebrate it via zoom just to see my father and of course my other relatives. My father teaches me a lot about life and given me so much wisdom and now I am also sharing it with my two kids. I love my father so much and I am so grateful to God that he is my father..
My birthday always falls on or the week after Father’s day so it’s always a double celebration 🙂

I used to feel sad each Father’s Day coz my father isn’t with us anymore. However, I manage to cope with that moments and only think all the happy memories with him, does night we had after dinner talks about anything under the sun, and giving me a good night kiss on my forehead. It was wonderful and gives me so much hope.
That first poem is lovely. I have a complex relationship with my dad. We actually don’t really celebrate this day or Mother’s day a lot.
