Happy Easter & Passover: How are you planning to celebrate Easter and Passover this year? With the ongoing global battle to contain the Covid19 virus, Easter and Passover gatherings will be celebrated differently. There will be no church or temple services as most of us are sheltered-in-place. There will be online services and, for families that live together, the celebrations will be made up of just immediate family with no invited guests. While this might seem severe or isolating, it is a time for reflection, communication, and gratitude for what we do have … LIFE. This year, Passover began on April 9 and will end on April 16. Easter, on the other hand, is on April 12, with some important celebrations leading up to it including; Palm Sunday and Good Friday. If like me, you come from a multi-faith home, you’d know that celebrating both traditions brings unity and understanding across cultures and beliefs. This season is a great motivator in that it brings us together to appreciate our differences while celebrating our common bonds. Raising kids in a multi-faith household taught me that the best lessons learned are not only of religious tolerance but of the recognition that we are all on a spiritual journey and that with love, respect, and consideration, we can see that all roads meet and lead to something greater than ourselves. When we factor in the current global challenges, this must also be a time to remember families that are struggling and consider how we can help others with our contributions.
Growing up, Easter was central to my religious celebrations and I looked forward to all the fun events, colorful eggs, and great food. We attended Easter Sunday services and enjoyed a special meal with the usual bunny rabbit chocolate eggs as treats. When I got married, we added Passover to our celebrations and had Seder at my in-laws. My first Seder was a beautiful celebration of prayer, food, and song. Family members took turns reading from the Haggadah and the serious tone of the readings was balanced by humor, a sip of wine and good food. The sharing of a meal and readings created a bond between those present and a reminder that gratitude to the creator and community effort is key. When I think about my Easter and Passover experiences, I am reminded that we are all children of one Creator and that faith, family, and communion matter because they pull us together. Celebrating both traditions affirmed and continues to affirm my love and respect for all religious and spiritual paths; after all, we are on a spiritual journey to ourselves. This year, in the spirit of Easter and Passover, let’s pray for global healing and an end to the current scourge. Let’s extend blessings of peace and goodwill to each other and keep hope alive. We can all do our part. I plan to attend a few online services and bathe in the word of God. I will enjoy meals with loved ones at home and contribute so other families can be fed.

What does Easter & Passover Mean to You? One of the special gifts we receive at Easter is a spirit of renewal; it is a time of rebirth and an opportunity to start afresh again. With Passover, we are reminded of the importance of religious and personal freedom and sacrifice. I have always loved the idea of being resurrected/renewed and liberated to accomplish all the things we put aside. Yet, there is more we could learn about both traditions because shedding more light on them gives others a better understanding of why it matters to us and it gives us a refresher course on why it should matter.
What Do You Know About Easter? Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his death by crucifixion.
Easter Day covers the fifty-day season from Easter Sunday through Pentecost.
Easter has a special flower, the white lily, which symbolizes the resurrection.
Painted Easter eggs were originally called Pysanka, and they were painted bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring.
Easter is a moveable feast which means that it is not on a set day every year but falls between March 22nd and April 25th.
As for the Easter bunny and egg, the bunny was first mentioned by Georg Franck von Frankenau’s De Ovis Paschalibus (Easter Bunny Eggs) in the 17th Century. Stories of rabbits laying Easter eggs were shared in Pennsylvania in the 19th century and the German legend of Osterhas told of good children receiving brightly colored eggs for Easter. The festive air, spirited church services, brightly colored new dresses, and chocolate eggs made Easter one of my favorites.
What Do You Know About Passover? Passover holiday is called Pesach in Hebrew.
Passover Seder is a festive family meal that is shared on either the first or second night of Passover
Passover references the passing over of the firstborn Jewish males when the death plague hit Egypt.
The Haggadah is a Jewish text that tells the story of the Passover and portions are read during the Seder.
Passover holiday has three names: Pesach – literally meaning the Passover sacrifice; Hag Hamatzot – Feast of Unleavened Bread; and Zeman Heirutenu – the Season of Our Freedom
Traditionally, four cups of wines are consumed at the festive meal of Passover night and Matzoh, unleavened bread, is eaten for seven or all eight days of Passover.
Dayeynu is the popular, traditional Hebrew song performed during Passover.

Looking back on past Easter and Passover Celebrations, I am reminded of why I cherish both and how they symbolize a time of hope, renewal, and rejuvenation. During Easter, we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. By the way, Easter was established as a holy day by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. to correspond with the Vernal equinox; it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon which happens on or after March 21, the Spring Equinox. For Passover, a Jewish holiday, it is celebrated in remembrance of the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt. It is a celebration of freedom from oppression and is also known as the Feast of Unleavened Bread. May your Easter Day and Passover Season be filled with blessings of love, good health, and grace. This is lovely! I enjoyed reading through it and looking at all your photos. Easter is definitely going to be different this year in light of our current pandemic. Usually, I go to a family member’s house for dinner, but this year, we’ve canceled it. I plan to just hang out with my dog and maybe color some eggs just to commemorate the holiday.

Sadly, we are not celebrating how we would have normally so definitely looking forward to celebrate after.
We are looking forward to having a low-key Easter. We are not very religious.
This is the strangest Easter yet. I grew up with a very strong Easter tradition in Germany, where we celebrate for several days starting with the Easter Fires on Saturday and the whole family getting together for Sunday and Monday to celebrate the arrival of spring. This year, nobody can travel to be together and it’s a challenge to feel like celebrating. Thank you for this post to remind us Easter is happening at all. 🙂
Honestly, it won’t be too much different for us. We always have a very low-key Easter. We will hide eggs around the house for the boys and have a nice breakfast together. Usually our community does an egg hunt but that was canceled this year. It’s also supposed to be horrible weather in SE Texas, so we wouldn’t be able to do much even if not for the pandemic.
As usual, I learn something from your well-thought-out posts! I didn’t grow up in a multi-faith home. But our celebrations encompassed parts of several faiths. You included one of my favorite hymns as a child! I loved when the men in the choir with their bass voices and the women with their altos and soproanos alternated with the “it is well” “with my soul:!

Easter this year feels particularly pertinent given everything that’s going on in the world, and personally I’m feeling the messages of rebirth and salvation very strongly. This year we’ll be joining an Easter Service remotely (in fact its our first Easter Service for years as until now we’ve not been able to find a Church that we fully align to!) and Im looking forward to it.

Thank you for posting a motivation post for Easter. it seems very weird not celebrating it the way I normally do.
Easter for me, like most holidays is about spending time with family and loved ones. Unfortunately this year many people are unable to. It still doesn’t take away from the true meaning of Easter, we should still hold on to the message of resurrection.

Personally, I don’t celebrate Easter and it’s not because I’m a Jehovah Witness (I’m not). And it isn’t because don’t believe in Christ or the power of his resurrection( because I do)– it’s just that after taking time to study the Scripture for myself, I’ve come to realize that a lot of pagan practices have being repackaged and Christianized and are not even approved or ordained by God– such as this.

A very simple Easter celebration for me & my close friends, we did a Zoom meet Easter lunch together & then followed by Easter eggs doodling for our respective home decoration while stay at home for COVID19 prevention currently. My childhood memory of Easter is waking up in dawn and going to church for the Easter mass, then enjoying the Easter breakfast after. It was always a good celebration. Then in the afternoon are the Easter egg hunting parties!

Easter is very meaningful for me as a Christian. It’s solely about the resurrection of Christ & this has something to do with my faith that the Jesus I believe is alive (never dead).

Happy Easter to you too! Easter isn’t celebrated her in Japan as it is in the West. They celebrate the culture of the Easter Bunny and easter eggs, but the “real” reason. But, I celebrated Passover and Easter when I was growing up in the US. Remember getting a palm for Palm Sunday.
I grew up in a very religious household making Easter a really big holiday for us. Now that I’m older and do not follow a religion, Ester isn’t as big of deal to us. That being said, we do still celebrate it because we enjoy that the kids like it. This year we didn’t do as much as we normally do. We got the kids some candy and the little one a toy. The bigger kids got animal crossing and we facetimed the grandparents when normally we would have gone to their house to hunt eggs and have dinner. Hopefully we will be able to do more next year.
Easter was so different this year. What kept our spirits up was our local community center had volunteers (including myself) make paper eggs out of scrapbook paper and glue them to skewers they stuck them in their lawn for people to go take Easter pictures while they were on a walk.
Easter is like Christmas with my family, and this day is usually spent with them all (including aunts and uncles) but this year, I’ve only spent it with my immediate due to world wide lockdown. Even though I didn’t get to see my relatives, I’m still grateful to be able to celebrate it. This is a wonderful post!
Now days most of us forget the real reason for Easter. Your post is inspiring.

We celebrate Easter at home and watch the Easter serom online. That’s how we celebrate this year, simple but the best. No fancy celebration with easter eggs etc.
This year was different but at least Easter wasn’t cancelled. I hope you had a wonder easter as well. It’s interesting knowing about the easter bunny and other stuff becuase I knew little about the them!

I honestly don’t remember celebrating Easter this year. I don’t remember hearing about it happening either. Crazy what is happening in 2020.
