UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS: International Women’s Day 2020 – United Nations Observance

Where there is a woman, there is magic. Ntozake Shange
The Generation Equality campaign is bringing together people of every gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion, and country, to drive actions that will create the gender-equal world we all deserve. UNWomen
A gender-equal society would be one where the word ‘gender’ does not exist: where everyone can be themselves. Gloria Steinem
True equality means holding everyone accountable in the same way, regardless of race, gender, faith, ethnicity – or political ideology. Monica Crowley
Give voice to what you know to be true, and do not be afraid of being disliked or exiled. I think that’s the hard work of standing up for what you see. Eve Ensler
It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent. Madeleine Albright

Women’s History Month: Today is International Women’s Day and the themes for this year are “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” (UNW) and “An equal world is an enabled world #EachforEqual”(IWD)  The first National Women’s Day was held in 1908-9 in New York City. It has grown from that first inspired outing, by a group of women who wanted our voices and needs to be heard, into a global event celebrated by women and girls around the world.  UNWomen has always been a dedicated champion of the event and, since 1996, it has created themes to help us focus on key issues of paramount and international concern for our gender. The UN themes from 1996 to date are below. Do any of the topics or issues resonate with you or women you know? Do you even care about the subject? Why/Whynot? Over the years, these topics have had an impact on the lives of millions of women and some have had a direct impact on my life as well. By bringing these issues to the forefront, it has enabled UNWomen, NGOs, and government agencies to review their policies and make necessary changes. While some of the 193 member states of the UN might not have effective policies that support equality, many continue to create opportunities for gender equity and change.

UNWomen International Women’s Day Themes:

Applying the Principles of Generation Equality and Each for Equal: In case you are wondering how to apply the principles of each theme to your life and within your community, I have some helpful tips to share. The IWD Each for Equal theme/campaign has suggested that we Use the hashtag #eachforequal to remind everyone that we are part of the solution to building a gender-equal world. It requires that we remember “Collective Individualism‘ as making individual changes for the collective, Strike the #EachforEqual pose to motivate others, Engage in a year-long activity and collaboration with others, Take collective action and shared responsibility for change, Amplify via social media, and Take decisive action to bring about gender equality dialogue and change wherever we are. It takes individual action to build and grow a collective.

The UNW Generation Equality theme/campaign offers 12 tips to help lay and sustain a foundation of gender equality in our communities and households. These simple everyday actions can bring about great progress; Share the care in your home by sharing chores and shifting ideas about gender-specific roles, Call out sexism and harassment without fear of recrimination, Reject the binary – It’s humankind. Not mankind, Demand an equal work culture, Exercise your political rights, Shop responsibly and pick eco-friendly products from socially responsible companies, Amplify feminist books, movies and more, Teach girls that they are worthy by not reinforcing gender stereotypes, Challenge what it means to “be a man” by seeing the whole person, not the stereotype, Commit to a cause and donate time/money, Challenge beauty standards that perpetuate unrealistic visions of femininity and, above all, Respect the choices of others.

Michelle Obama speaks on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day 2020: How it began and why it’s still important

She wasn’t looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword. Atticus
If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman. Margaret Thatcher
We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States, be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever. Susan B. Anthony, Declaration of Rights for Women, July 1876
There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers. Susan B. Anthony
I get very frustrated when I hear women saying, “Oh, feminism is passé,” because I think feminism means empowerment. Men can be feminists, too! Many men are feminists. We need feminism. It’s not against men; it’s about the empowerment of women. It’s the respect of women–giving women equal rights, the same opportunities. Annie Lennox

Is Gender Equality Relevant in Our Society Today? Yes, every nation should make it a top priority to encourage everyone to give their best work in service to humanity. In order to be fully engaged in service to our communities, we need access to training, mentoring and funding. If women are denied such access, then 50% of a nation’s potential is lost. I believe that all women have the potential to live fulfilling lives and we can do great things globally. However, female empowerment must begin with each of us working with women and men who believe in gender parity. Women must rise above petty bickering and learn to support and uplift each other and men must collaborate with us to achieve mutual goals. We must stop sabotaging our gender and align with men who support equality for all. For every wall we tear down, for every glass ceiling we break, for every stride we make for change, we must bring others along with us and mentor the younger generation.

Are we Close to Achieving Gender Equity? We are NOT quite there yet. We have made many inroads since the days when women were considered the personal property of their fathers and husbands but, we have more walls and ceilings to tear down.  We will not be intimidated by those who wish to dismiss this important discussion with glib remarks that we are already equal. Yes, we are as humans but, we are not in the workplace or in many areas of society and life. Bury your head in the sand if you wish but, don’t expect me to join you. Wake up! What you dismiss today will impact your livelihood and legacy tomorrow. If you are familiar with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2018, you’d remember that there are 17 areas/goals that member states expect to improve for all citizens by 2030.
Which are most important to you?
Goal 1: No Poverty
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Goal 4: Quality Education
Goal 5: Gender Equality
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Goal 13: Climate Action
Goal 14: Life Below Water
Goal 15: Life on Land
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Number 5 on the list is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. A 2018 Progress Report/Review of Goal 5 found that there was still a lot of room for improvement and that member states should implement more aggressive efforts to create permanent change. Change demands effort and courage. My wish is that we reach these lofty goals well before 2030. What do you think?

The day will come when man will recognize woman as his peer, not only at the fireside but in councils of the nation. Then, and not until then, will there be the perfect comradeship, the ideal union between the sexes that shall result in the highest development of the race. Susan B. Anthony
Just be what it is that you are, and that is just fine. You don’t have to be what you’re not in any way. Live that and live that fully, and that is where you discover ecstasy. You can’t really have ecstasy as something other than yourself. Alice Walker
I am a feminist. I’ve been female for a long time now. I’d be stupid not to be on my own side. Maya Angelou
Excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism. Oprah Winfrey
Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others. Amelia Earhart
I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t. Audre Lorde
Women’s liberation is the liberation of the feminine in the man and the masculine in the woman.  Corita Kent

GENERATION EQUALITY: Work/Health/Education/Gender Bias/Inequality: When we think of gender bias, what often comes to mind is topics on job bias and education inequity. Yet, gender bias flows into every area of our lives. The woman who earns less than her male colleague might not always have a working partner to make up the difference, and so that old logic of men as supreme heads of households ought to be buried with that equally archaic belief that women are cut out for only certain types of jobs. In our global community today, there are fewer women leaders because of societal expectations, archaic perceptions, and our acceptance of them. We can work to change this by taking actions that empower us and by aligning ourselves with others who will encourage us. If pay equity issues remain a hot button topic in the USA and globally, it is for good reason. When we are compensated fairly for equal work, we experience the power of financial independence and are able to put our energies into fighting for our rights on other issues that contribute to global inequity.

Where do you stand on this subject? How has it impacted your life or the lives of women around you? What little step can you take today to bring about change? It takes a village… it takes each one, helping one…

Great post! Never under estimate the power of women… I’m all in to support same pay rate and top executive, country leader, etc… If the person have the ability to achieve great things, it shouldn’t matter for male/female…

I am definitely in favor of gender equality, but I don’t think that has to equate to sameness. I think celebrating the ways that men and women are different can be equal and beautiful.

Holly, nobody is talking about sameness. We can never be the same but we can have fair and equitable treatment that compensates us equally = equal pay for equal work. equal opportunities for equal skills. That is not sameness. Please read my post again. TY! 🙂

I’ve seen a lot of my friends, especially those with daughters, posting about International Women’s Day. As a boy mom, I see the other side of this. I have been trying to raise my boys (they are still very young) to know that women are equal to them. I think that’s where it’s going to start and where the most change will happen. If we raise our children with the ideals that everyone is equal, then that’s what they will know!

Happy women’s day! I will be a bit spoilsport here. I don’t like comparisons at all, so the revolving matter for many people about ‘women equal to men, women ahead of men or women behind men’, it doesn’t really matter. Do your bit, but why compare. Everyone is different and can’t be judged or compared.

    • Eliz@MirthandMotivation permalink*
      15/03/2020 6:51 am

You’ve missed the point of International Women’s Day. It is not about simple comparisons, it is about fair and equitable treatment so we can all compete according to our abilities and skills. We live in a world that does focus on comparing and choosing men over women. Women earn 78% of the average male salary. The Gender Gap is real and dismissing it as just ordinary comparison like we are comparing shoes and hats is insulting to both genders. If governments around the world agree that improvements need to be made and both men/women have been fighting this for over 100 years, it is time to take your head out of the sand and get serious about issues that affect you, your mother, sisters and female friends. Please read my post carefully before leaving such comments next time. Thank you!

Yes, WE ARE!!! But, if that belief/idea was truly universal, we would not have these conversations right? That said, why would you even want to squash my freedom to express these issues? It’s one thing to say all humans are equal, it’s another to walk the talk … hmmm
Interestingly, the very few glib comments are coming from some folks of the male gender. I wonder why? Is this topic pushing a button because behind closed doors you’d rather we maintain the status quo? Do you really believe what you are saying? THEN STAND UP AND DEMAND THAT YOUR SISTERS GET EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK OR STFU! That is the equality we are discussing in my post which I suspect you didn’t read, right? 🙂

There are so many countries in which women still don’t have rights. I was recently in Tanzania and I was shocked to learn that women have to ask their husband’s permission if they want to work. Also, there women are obliged to take care of the house and the children, whilst the man provides – and because of it, they do have control over their wives. It’s so sad… Marrying before the legal age is still widely practiced in the country as well.

I agree it is important to practice political rights. We know through history that if you do not use it, you might lose it. Also, it seems unbelievable that we still need to fight for equal pay/rights in the workplace. Thank you for pointing out the importance of having a day dedicated to women.

Whenever I see women leaders, inventors, scholars, it makes me very proud. Though some country are still struggling to attain gender equality but I’m glad that it isn’t the majority. I live in a 3rd world country but we already had 2 presidents and there are women CEO’s who prove that we are very much capable of accomplishing great things.
