International Day of the Girl Child #DayoftheGirl #GenerationEquality
The empowerment of and investment in girls, which are critical for economic growth, the achievement of all Millennium Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty and extreme poverty, as well as the meaningful participation of girls in decisions that affect them, are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights, and recognizing also that empowering girls requires their active participation in decision-making processes and the active support and engagement of their parents, legal guardians, families and care providers, as well as boys and men and the wider community… Excerpt of UN Resolution 66/170 on International Day of the Girl, 2011.
Motivation Mondays:- International Day of the Girl 2019 – GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable #dayofthegirl – How do girls become unscripted and unstoppable? Education, empowerment, and encouragement through seeing examples of other girls achieving their goals are imperative markers for success. We cannot continue to pay lip service to the idea of gender equality because the responsibility falls on all of us. We must make daily decisions that promote equity for all. Since 2011, when the International Day of Girls initiative was a project of Plan International, the goal was to create a massive movement that addressed key areas of concern affecting girls globally. Plan International led a global effort to build a coalition for the idea, gained the support of the Canadian government, and Day of the Girl was subsequently proposed and passed as a UN resolution on December 19, 2011. Every year, a carefully selected theme has helped organizers bring attention to areas of great need in the lives of girls and women globally.
The theme for the inaugural year of 2012 was Ending Child Marriage and that campaign remains on the forefront as some nations continue the practice while others are making an effort to end it. Subsequent themes have been 2013 -Innovating for Girls’ Education, 2014 – Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence, 2015 – The Power of Adolescent Girls: Vision for 2030, 2016 – Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls, 2017 – EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises, and 2018 – With Her: A Skilled Girl Force. This year, according to UNICEF, under the theme, “GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable”, International Day of the Girl will celebrate achievements by, with, and for girls since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and passage of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. What does all this mean?
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is a treaty that defines the civil, political, economic, social, health, and cultural rights of children under the age of eighteen. Created in 1989, it was ratified and accepted by 196 member nations in 1990. Member nations are bound by International law to work in the best interest of the child. In recent years, the CRC has highlighted the need to restrict the participation of children in military conflicts and children in prostitution/pornography as critical areas of concern and 160 nations accepted the resolution to sanction perpetrators and put an end to those issues.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was a World Conference, held almost 25 years ago, that brought 30,000 women from 200 countries together to create a blueprint of action for women and girls’ human rights. It gave leaders and female advocates the impetus to speak up about issues of inequity and female repression and has continued to force changes in member nations. With 2020 around the corner, the global community plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration by pushing for greater commitments to achieve the goals of its action platform by 2030. Motivation Mondays:- International Day of the Girl 2019 – GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable: What does the Platform for Action demand? The platform pinpoints 9 key areas where discrimination, exploitation, and exclusion of girls remain high. For girls to truly become unscripted and unstoppable, we need checks and balances to ensure that member nations work in concert with organizations and communities to equip girls with the power, knowledge, and space to grow and succeed. The work begins at home, in our schools, in our workplace, and our interactions with each other. If we discourage our daughters from aiming higher, downplay their abuse or academic pursuits, or disregard the promotion of competent females in the workplace, we are part of the problem. To be solution-oriented means to be actively engaged in wanting better for all girls. Do we want great things for our sons? Of course, we should be motivated to want the best for every child, and gender equality should be the ultimate goal for all.
The Platform for Action specifically calls on the global community to:
1. Eliminate all forms of discrimination against girls
2. Eliminate negative cultural attitudes and practices against girls.
3. Promote and protect the rights of girls and increase awareness of their needs and
potential.
4. Eliminate discrimination against girls in education, skills development, and training.
5. Eliminate discrimination against girls in health and nutrition.
6. Eliminate the economic exploitation of child labor and protect young girls at work.
7. Eradicate violence against girls.
8. Promote girls’ awareness of and participation in social, economic, and political life.
9. Strengthen the role of the family in improving the status of girls
Even though the efforts that came out of the Beijing Declaration have been effective, there is still work to do. Girls in restrictive nations, rural areas, humanitarian settings, and those with disabilities need our collective help to reach and achieve their full potential.

Motivation Mondays:- International Day of the Girl 2019 – GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable: Did you know that 2.5 billion women and girls on the planet today are affected by discriminatory laws and lack any legal protection? Even with international laws and member nations signing off on resolutions and policies, in many countries, traditional and archaic beliefs hold women and girls hostage to worn-out standards and interfere in their ability to progress; as much as 75 percent of the rights of women and girls are not protected by law. Yet kids around the world break barriers reminding us that we should not be limited by our gender and when we open doors for all, everyone benefits.
How Can We Support/Celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child? Every year, we talk about these issues and make basic recommendations on how we can get involved in our communities. The fact is that it all begins in our homes, minds, and hearts. We can choose to educate ourselves on the issues, support equal-pay-for-equal work in our places of work, and encourage our daughters to venture into fields that were once dominated by males. Globally, we can support organizations that fight to increase female education and socioeconomic participation and make a commitment to practice what we preach in our homes. We can choose to wear blinders or make a concerted commitment to encourage our daughters, sisters, and other females to reach for their dreams. We can do our part by sharing information on data and programs that help build gender equity, offer opportunities for girls to get an education, and that help them to become fully vested in participating in building their communities. It is an arduous but not impossible task. It will take our commitment to reach that goal.

Girls are every bit as intelligent, talented, capable and valuable as boys are. A person’s worth should not be determined by their gender. I have 2 daughters and one son, and I have always taught them to judge all people by their personality, not their gender or race. And my kids know that they should always pursue their dreams and set their goals regardless of the stereotypes.

It’s so easy to forget sometimes that there are women and children in other areas of the world who suffer through these horrible atrocities every day. I’ve been lucky that I live in the US where things aren’t always great, but there aren’t forced marriages, child labor, and women not being allowed to seek education. I’d heard of a few of these campaigns before, but didn’t know it was based around an entire day and declaration.
Yes, it is and the efforts are actually ongoing and year-round.

There are so many amazing reminders we go regularly through every October. Like a National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Children’s Health Month, and many others. Each has its significance and importance. Thank you for bringing into our awareness the International Day of the Girl. Now, I have one more amazing celebration to shout out!

I’ve never heard of International Day of the Girl, but it’s a great idea… there is still so much work to be done in respect of equality around the world.
As much as I love Beijing and I did love being there, feeling like they would be the source of women’s empowerment does seem odd. Great they are trying to promote it though.

There are so many strong women in the world who have paved the world before us. I always teach my daughters of the importance women have been to our present and to our future. I hope they change the world someday too.
It is my hope to see equality in so many areas…. read All areas of society. We don’t have to be mirror images but we all deserve to have basic rights and opportunities to grow and accomplish our dreams.

I think it’s important to highlight the issues girls face in different cultures. Although they’re always trying to fit a mold, there’s this sense of beauty that can’t be attained. Even when you live in America, there are certain standards girls are held onto.

This is the first time I hear about The Platform for Action, what a great initiative! It’s amazing that it has been 25 years since it has been signed but girls are still suffering in the world because of stupid traditions that hteir parents are not willing to break.
Yes, there are so many hurdles to jump over. Archaic traditions are the toughest.

I cannot agree with this movement more. You are right, no one person or group or even country can solve this problem alone. BUT all working together, the more people we can raise awareness with, the more we can make an unstoppable force to make things better for all girls everywhere. This is one of the reasons I am a lifetime member of Girl Scouts USA, and have enrolled my daughters – their current campaign is to focus on and nurture the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader) in all girls.

We still have a lot to do in the struggle for equality but we have also come a long way. More and more girls have an opportunity to go to school now despite other challenges.

this is the first time that I heard about GirlForce but I’m glad that it’s actually already out there. It’s sad that we need to have this implemented to be able to have our sisters’ voices be heard. Discrimination is such a pervasive negative influence and I wish it would just end.

Very useful post specially in India where there are still thoughts in rural areas not to promote girls. Girls are still there ones to be kept for household chores and raising children. Your article should be read by all and understand the value of a girl and respect.

I can believe that. I have recently attended a festival which supported an international initiative about female equality in music. They had exhibitions and special talks during the festival, and it was so eye opening.
Exactly. I attended an art event at The Metropolitan Museum last night and it was about how female artists have been kept off the history books and dismissed in exhibitions historically… an eye-opener too.

It is a sad reality that women are still being discriminated upon in other parts of the world. Most of it is deeply rooted in culture and tradition, however I see some young girls breaking the norm and showing the world what they are capable of. Pushing for women empowerment is as important as saving the environment.

As someone who grew up in a developing country, I am still horrified by atrocities that girls go through in developing countries still today. Alas, (some) women enable the patriarchy and it is still deeply entrenched in the global south thus fueling girl child discrimination for education, child marriage etc. I just hope these UN events and holidays somehow spur us to move the needle.

Thinking about raising a girl coming up is so terrifying to me. We are so lucky here in the US with the rights and advanges girls have.
That video “Young girls force-fed for marriage in Mauritania!” is so horrible. It is is the 21st century and some unimaginable practices are still going on! We need continuously change these practices to postives ones!

I love the angle on motivation. I feel that Ignorance is one of the major problem that needs to be addressed and education is a tool to combat it.

Such a powerful post! I didn’t know Oct 11th is int’l girl empowerment day, but coincidentally I am reading 2 books written by Nigerian authors about the same issues. I am hoping that girls all over the world esp in rural areas will get the same chances as boys and escape the traditional roles that oppress them.
