Motivation Mondays: The Golden Rule

“Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself.” Confucius

Motivation Mondays: The Golden Rule

Motivation Mondays: The Golden Rule

Treat others as you would like others to treat you (positive or directive form)
Do not treat others in ways that you would not like to be treated (negative or prohibitive form)
What you wish upon others, you wish upon yourself (empathic or responsive form) Wikipedia

The Golden Rule: As far back as I can remember, the maxim or ethic of reciprocity, which is what we also call the Golden Rule, has been a topic of discussion in my household and in other social circles. What is so complicated about such a simple and straightforward bit of wisdom advice? Why do so many ignore it?  If we look at the many paths to spiritual growth, there is some version of this principle included in the guiding rules or dictates of every single one of them. Whether you believe in any of them is not entirely the focus here because the idea of wanting to be treated with dignity and respect is a universal human desire. This universal principle also applies to our planet and all life forms in it. It is easy to forget that when we live by the tenets of the Golden Rule, we must apply that belief to not just our human interactions but, to all interactions including how we treat our earth, our planet, and all that sustains the world we inhabit.
Insights on Resistance: We all want to be treated well even as some of us dish out pain and suffering to others. We all want to be heard and understood yet, some give short shrift to the idea because they see it as idealistic and untenable. Another argument is that rules are arbitrary and force us to comply with situations that might not be within our capacity to honor and adopt. Some dismiss it as religious piety and a challenge for most humans to follow. Perhaps… but can we start with the basics? Why not just consider our humanity in all our interactions.

A Story: “The Old Man and His Grandson” A Brothers Grimm fairy tale
There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilled the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth. His son and his son’s wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather, at last, had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it. And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed. Then they brought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat. They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. “What are you doing there?” asked the father. “I am making a little trough,” answered the child, “for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.”

The man and his wife looked at each other for a while and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything. via Wikiversity

Motivation Mondays: The Golden Rule

Motivation Mondays: The Golden Rule

Listening to wise scriptures, austerity, sacrifice, respectful faith, social welfare, forgiveness, purity of intent, compassion, truth, and self-control—are the ten wealth of character (self). O king aim for these, may you be steadfast in these qualities. These are the basis of prosperity and rightful living… Hence, (keeping these in mind), by self-control and by making dharma (right conduct) your main focus, treat others as you treat yourself. Mahābhārata Shānti-Parva 167:9 Source Wiki

How would you define the Golden Rule in your own words? I think our individual interpretation of the term would probably provide some insight into our own moral compass. Do you have difficulty formulating a version you can live with? Do you see it as a rule that applies to others but not necessarily to you? Have you added a set of terms and conditions wherein the Golden Rule kicks in only if certain conditions you value are met? If you are having trouble thinking about your version, here are a few to consider: Some well-regarded philosophers weighed in with their versions – Avoid doing what you would blame others for doing.” Thales “What you do not want to happen to you, do not do it yourself either. ” Sextus the Pythagorean “Do not do to others that which angers you when they do it to you.” Isocrates. Do any of these ring a bell? I bet they do. When we act with disdain towards others, we are forgetting how maddening the same attitude will make us feel.

Do we all fall short? Of course! To err is human and to forgive is divine. I would add that to err is a vital and dynamic human quality because our errors teach us great life lessons. If you have never made a mistake or dropped the ball in your life you need to chill out. The Golden Rule is not a strict, rigid dictate that sends us to into a dark hole. It is a guide on living and a reminder that our actions bear fruit. When we treat others with dignity and respect, the same is reflected back to o=us and vise versa. Perfection is not required but some effort is necessary. There are times when we are so focused on our needs that we become irascible and inattentive. Being in the frame of mind where we give others their due requires not only self-awareness but effort. If we remind ourselves about the way we like to be treated, we would be reminded that others would appreciate the same. Fair and equal treatment.

The Golden Rule By Allen Steble via poemhunter

Do to others
What you would want done for you
Help others
That they may help you too
Feed those who are hungry
So when you are hungry
You also may be fed
Clothe those who are naked
So they may clothe you when you are helpless and cold
Shed light where there is darkness
So that light may prevail through your darkness
Be cool
Live by the golden rule
Do to other
What you want done for you

Do to others what you want them to do to you. Matthew 7:12
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Luke 6:31
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Galatians 5:14

Did you know that April 5th is Golden Rule Day?  It is a day to honor our planet, ourselves and each other. I bet most of you have never heard of this day and I wonder why it is not disseminated widely. Perhaps it hasn’t gained the kind of celebrity-driven groundswell because it’s a topic that some would rather avoid. How do we justify our excesses on a planet where so many have nothing?  Come back for more…

The Golden Rule by Jim Yerman  via poemhunter

In a world where we are so connected, we should look within our hearts
And find the reason why, when we’re so close, we still so far apart.

I believe the answer is a simple one and will come as no surprise
For it’s been around since the dawn of man sitting right before our eyes.

If you look at most of the world’s religions, (I remember learning this in school)
A basic lesson in all of them is some form of The Golden Rule.

Ah, but it’s not enough for the religions of the world, the Golden Rule to teach
Another thing I learned in school…we must practice what we preach.

We can point fingers as to the cause but we all shoulder part of the blame
For it’s up to each of us to follow the rule and treat everyone the same.

Is it possible the answer is so simple or am I once again the fool?
For thinking the world would be a better place if we all practiced the Golden Rule.

If it worked, if starting today we all practiced The Golden Rule
And the world became a better place…then I would gladly play the fool.

It’s so important to treat others the way you want to be treated. We have had this discussion a lot with my boys lately. They are 4 and 6 and don’t fully understand yet, but when one does something to the other I ask “would you be upset if he did that to you?” and when they answer yes I remind them to think about that and be nice. It’s hard, sometimes, but it can be done!

From a young age, a lot of us are taught the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I think it’s human nature for us to want to be treated well, and understand we’ll reciprocate.

It is so important to treat others with the kind of respect with which we would like to be treated. It is sometimes too easy to get caught up in the “have it my way” mentality that we forget living by the Golden Rule is a win-win for everyone.

Sometimes, there are people who just want to do something mean to us, not because we did the same, but because that’s how they are. They may be having something going on in their life, and sometimes what we can do is just to pray for them.

There really is no other rule that crosses all cultures and religions more than the golden rule. It is the foundation for all human kind to live by. I always use it, HOPEFULLY, in how I help and relate to anyone in my life. It is why I shy away from sinful or harmful activities towards others but also why I run towards other actions that may seem crazy or irrational.

It’s very important to treat others the same way we want to be treated. It’s always good to be reminded of the golden rule.

I wish more people would see how horrible they are to others. I see that in almost everything I do. When I feel hateful, even if the words that come out of my mouth sound nice, I receive a harsh comment or a rough encounter. The same happens when I’m nice, genuinely nice, I receive a loving comment or a tender word.

A very simple, but often overlooked maxim to live by. Kindness doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. The golden rule applies to the small and simple things too. Great reminders, Elizabeth!

I think treating others how you want to be treated is essential to remembering we are all human and need to be kind to others if we want the same.

I never thought about carrying out the golden rule farther than how I treated people. But you are so right. I should think about this across a variety of spectrums including how I treat the world around me.

Absolute wisdom here! Treat others just how you’d want to be treated too. I think that everytone hsould just make it their decision to embrace the Golden Rule if we have to see harmony in our society. And if we err, we can always get back on track because we have the power to forgive; and we’ll be forgiven too.

The ‘Golden Rule’ is what my motto in life. And whenever someone wronged me, even though it’s difficult at first I try to forgive them. I don’t hold grudges as it’s like drinking poison and expect others to get sick. Thank you for the inspiring post!

I think that a lot of people have forgotten the Golden Rule and that they don’t really think about treating others the way they would like to be treated. It is unfortunate, but that’s just the way that it is. People tend to get caught up in life and don’t apply the golden rule as much.
