Happy Father’s Day: As we approach yet another Father’s Day this coming Sunday the 16th, I am reminded of the lasting impact our parents have on our lives. They raise us, set us free to live through our own destinies, and then they stay close to our hearts and minds forever speaking in our ears about seizing life with both hands, about dos/don’ts, and even the what ifs. I can still hear my Dad’s voice in my ears even though, he passed away 3 decades ago. Whenever I feel the stresses of life clouding my path, I hear him say gently… “Don’t be afraid. Have courage.”

A Story – Advice A Dad Would Give
Soyen Shaku, the first Zen teacher to come to America, said: “My heart burns like fire but my eyes are as cold as dead ashes.” He made the following rules which he practiced every day of his life.
In the morning before dressing, light incense and meditate.
Retire at a regular hour. Partake of food at regular intervals.
Eat with moderation and never to the point of satisfaction.
Receive a guest with the same attitude you have when alone.
When alone, maintain the same attitude you have in receiving guests.
Watch what you say, and whatever you say, practice it.
When an opportunity comes do not let it pass you by, yet always think twice before acting.
Do not regret the past. Look to the future.
Have the fearless attitude of a hero and the loving heart of a child.

Father’s Day Matters: On this and every Father’s Day, the love we have for our dads, granddads, brothers, husbands, and sons will be celebrated. My dad was the rock of our household and held a special place in my heart. Like other dads, he wanted the best for his kids and gave us his best. Each year, I offer an invocation in which I name the men in my family and other male figures. I offer it again this year as its message still rings true: I send Happy Father’s Day wishes to all who have shared sacred space and stories with their kin.

A Story – The Boat Of Life
“The boat is coming to take me home because I have failed in my studies here at the monastery,” said the boy to his teacher. “What can I say to my family?”
“Say that you did your best and that is as much as anyone can do,” answered the teacher.
“But I wanted to be a famous monk and teach others.”
“You can.”
“How?” asked the sad boy.
“Live from your heart. I will show you. Do you see that boat making its way across the lake with the sun setting behind it?”

What does Father’s Day mean to you? Each year, as this special day, which started on June 19, 1910, and has been attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd, rolls around, we stop and give thanks for our fathers. Why bother? Some folks might ask. Why Not!? We can use the occasion to remember everyone who plays or has played a fatherly, mentor role in our lives, and make an effort to be a mentor to someone else. If we stop to think about the people who have motivated and encouraged us, we would come to understand that it takes a village to raise a child; every hand lifted in kindness is an inspiring soul helping many kids to grow into productive adults. my father moved through dooms of love
through sames of am through haves of give,
singing each morning out of each night
my father moved through depths of height
this motionless forgetful where

A Story – Become A Lake (Advice a dad would give)
An aging Hindu master grew tired of his apprentice complaining, and so, one morning, he sent him for some salt. When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.
“How does it taste?” the master asked.
“Bitter,” spit the apprentice.
The master chuckled and then asked the young man to take the same handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake, and once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”
As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the master asked, “How does it taste?”
“Much fresher,” remarked the apprentice.
“Do you taste the salt?” asked the master.
“No,” said the young man.
At this, the master sat beside the young man who so reminded him of himself and took his hands, offering, “The pain of life is pure salt, no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in. They have sacrificed a lot which we mostly do not see so celebrating this day should be treasured and not be taken for granted.
I love all the beautiful poems and writings, and the idea of an invocation to your late father is such a beautiful and moving tribute. I live overseas, so I won’t get to be with my dad for father’s day in person, but will be sending lots of love to my dad and grandfathers this Father’s day!
Lovely poems.. Children want to make their fathers proud, and an involved father promotes inner growth and strength. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self confidence.
Father’s day is always hard for me. My father passed away when I was very young and because my birthday falls so close to Father’s day, he always told me that I was his best Father’s day gift. It’s a good memory I carry from him.
I have no problem celebrating Father’s Day. It’s a wonderful reminder of the loving and caring men we have in our lives. It may not always be someone’s biological Father, but anyone who is a father-figure. I am so lucky to have the amazing dad I have, and my boys have an amazing father in my husband. I also celebrate my father-in-law who raised the man I love, and also my brother-in-law who is a great father to my nephews. It isn’t about gifts and the “Hallmark holiday” but about honoring those who have helped shape us to the person we are today.
My Dad has always worked hard and was ever so patient with me. I don’t know how because I sure do test him as I got older. But no matter how big and grown I thought I was, I always wanted to be right there at his elbow watching and learning as he worked on cars, built furniture, welded, it didn’t matter. I idolized him then and still do today.
I think father’s make their children feel worthy, and the day is a grand way to honor all the inspiring dads out there, past and present. I always view my own father as one who shines with integrity, character, and vision. I still aspire to be like him. Then when I had children of my own, I saw my husband in the same way. Dads give us a place to feel accepted, hopeful and at peace all at the same time. We should all pause, especially on Father’s Day, to express our gratitude for all the inspiring men in our lives. Thanks for sharing your poems!
My dad. My hero. He’s been gone for 27 years now. Life would have been so much different if I had the chance to grow up with him to guide me. I have a special song for my dad. This song really resonates with me as the lyrics seem to be all about my dad and me. If you have time you can search for the song and listen to it too. Its title is “You Can Let Go Now Daddy” and the artist is Crystal Shawanda.
I didn’t grow up with a dad in my life, so I am happy that my kids have a father to look up to. Looking forward to celebrating this weekend.

I never really got to spend Father’s Day with my dad before when I was a child. Now as an adult I look forward to it and it is something I can do with him and my children.
I’m glad that father’s day is celebrated now as much as mother’s day. We shouldn’t really forget a Father’s sacrifice, it really matters.

My dad lives very far away from me but I appreciate him everyday for bringing me up with my mum. My favorite childhood memory of him is when he’d gather my siblings and I every evening after dinner and tell us stories.
Father’s Day is an important one. While Mother’s Day is much remembered, Father’s Day is also a very special day to celebrate.
Just a few more days but my dad’s not getting his present until July – since I live in a different country. Will send him a lot of messages and possibly call him – if he answers.

To me, father’s day is about good food, good drinks, and a good game! I love my dad for always being there for me, so I make sure to take him out to a good sporting event and the best restaurant in town. My dad has always been a dad to so many, including my friends! Happy Father’s Day!

We are all because of our parents. If I think about my career it was my dad who was instrumental in getting my coveted job and always supports my decisions albeit a bit hesitatingly sometimes like any dad.
I’ve never been good with this day. I had an absentee dad and I’m a single Mom. I do feel happy for those who have awesome Dads and I feel happy for them.

Honestly, Fathers’ Day doesn’t mean much to me. It’s any other ordinary day in the year.
Father for me is the visual image of the world when I was a kid. When I grew up father is my teacher for my life.
My father has been a great support for me all throughout my entire life. He has been my pillar, my roof and my wall to lean on. He has been very tough and sturdy but he always make sure I’m doing fine. Let’s celebrate our Father’s greatest day! Cheers!

Father’s Day means to me a time to honor my dad for having given me life and the life that I live.
When I look at my dad. He was twenty when he started having a family, and he was always the coolest dad. He did everything for his kids, and he never made us feel like he was pressured. I know that it must be a great feeling to be a guy like that.

Although, I was not fortunate enough to know my father who passed away one month before I was born. I was blessed to have 2 amazing uncles who played the father figures in my life. I agree that Father’s Day matters. I always love your inspiring posts.

Father’s Day is such a precious day! We all must thank our father for always being there and supporting us no matter what. I try to make it special every year.
Wonderful tribute to all lovely fathers out there deserving of our appreciation. My father too is so deserving – he has given us so much!
Motivation is important. It can be any simple things, to prepare a nice meal, to clean my house, to have a cup of coffee at a cozy cafe.
Another Father’s Day without my dad. Miss him so much! I know I should be glad that he is no longer in so much pain and that he is with God, but I miss his guidance, his corny jokes and everything. I am thankful that God chose him to be my dad, even if it was only for a short while. Happy Father’s day to all dads (and moms that take on dad roles as well)

I know when it comes to my Father’s day, the day my daughter was born, making me a father makes me the happiest. It makes me think about the best thing in my life. It’s why I love spending time with my daughter.
I remember my father as someone who seldom expect returns from his children. When I bought presents for my mum, she will gleam with joy, but not my dad. He would ask me how much have I spent and ask me not to spend anything next time. He ain’t around anymore though.

To be honest, each day is special for me. I live with my family so each day is a Father’s Day or a mother’s day or a sibling’s day for me.
I am lucky enough to have a great dad and was lucky to have a great step-dad (rip). Even though my parents divorced, my dad and step mom was always invited to everything we had going on. Your tribute to fathers on this day is priceless.

My family celebrated father’s day yesterday with my dad and brother. It was really awesome to have family around and to be able to celebrate how important they are.

My dad, my hero. Even if I only had him for a short time, I still thank God that He gave me my daddy to raise me and guide me. I guess he wanted to have a boy for a first born but my daddy got me instead. He taught me stuff that boys needed to learn – troubleshooting a car that won’t start, changing tires, minor household repairs, etc. I never regretted learning to work with my hands. Now as an adult, one of my prized possessions is a complete toolbox! Thank you Daddy for teaching me these skills.

I didn’t have a good father. He was there financially but that was it. My ex husband was also not a good Dad to our kid. Suffice to say that I didn’t have great idea of what fathers were supposed to be like. Hopefully, this changes soon. Hopefully by next year, I’ll be able to relate to the post made by people about great dads.

Beautiful post. Our fathers are so important. They offer us something that no one can replace.
I know sometimes it is difficult to do that with my dad as he has struggled to be the kind of dad I have wanted him to be. And sometimes he’s struggled mightily. But I think he tried his best with the tools he was provided, and sometimes it’s all you can ask for. So I honor my dad on that day because he gave me the tools to be who I am.

Fathers always share a special bond with their kids. It is not as discussed about as a mother’s compassion but then there is no denying that a father’s role in a child’s life is extremely important and actually paves the way to a great adult life.
