Motivation Mondays: In Honor of Memorial Day – Today, we honor the brave men and women who served this great country and paid the ultimate price by giving their lives so we can live free. We honor and remember those who returned as survivors, witnesses, patriots, scarred. We honor all our servicemen/women around the world. Originally called Decoration Day, this special holiday began in response to the great loss of life during the American Civil War which, at its conclusion in 1865, had claimed the lives of over 620,000 men. In the early days, women would place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. By 1868, Major General John A. Logan designated it as an official day of remembrance. In 1971, it became a federal holiday. In case you don’t know this, Memorial Day honors American servicemen/women who lost their lives at war while Veterans Day honors all who served; alive and otherwise.
Do you know someone who served and lost their life for this great country? Name a loved one you’d like to remember. Did you/yours serve anywhere in the world? Share a story so we can honor them all. May peace reign. I love Eric Burdon’s quote because it is a reminder that our servicemen/women came from a wide range of backgrounds and represented a microcosm of the world we inhabit. They had aspirations like all of us and their lives were cut short before they could realize all of their dreams an personal goals. Those who bore witness to the losses returned home with a shared burden of loss. Some returned with fragmented lives, others returned with a fervor in their hearts, determined to make changes for the better. “On Memorial Day, I don’t want to only remember the combatants. There were also those who came out of the trenches as writers and poets, who started preaching peace, men and women who have made this world a kinder place to live.”

Motivation Mondays: Remember & Honor #MemorialDay
On Memorial Day, we will pause to honor and remember all the brave souls who paid the ultimate sacrifice – they gave up their lives so the rest of us can enjoy all the freedoms and advantages that come with living under a system that upholds the democratic process. Each casualty of war or MIA leaves behind loved ones, family members, and memories of what could have been… Their loved ones hold on to the hope that their death was pain-free, not in vain or that the MIA status will one day change. It rarely does. Each Memorial Day becomes a harbinger of reminders of loved ones lost to wars. Of interest, the Tomb of the Unknown soldier now remains empty as recent DNA testing was able to resolve the mystery of bones buried there. They belonged to an air force pilot by name of Lt Michael Joseph Blassie. He has since been reburied in his hometown.
How do we ever forget? We don’t. How do we forget the pain and suffering inflicted on both the victor and the vanquished? We don’t. Even as a side claims victory and the spoils of war, the loss of life and the deepening resentments that come from warring creates, on the losing side, animosity and a spirit of revenge. Where will it end? Look around you, we live in a fractious world with unequal access to resources and opportunities. The downtrodden look for answers. The resentments grow. War becomes the devastating solution, and its scars are indelible. Raise your hands in salute to our heroes, raise your hands also in a gesture of peace… We need peaceful coexistence in this world but it must begin in our homes and in our hearts.

What does Memorial Day mean to You? if you are not familiar with this very important day then, I encourage you to stop and consider what it means to pay the ultimate sacrifice for your beloved country. As previously stated in this post, I can’t say it enough because I have tremendous pride and respect for our service men/women, this is a special day celebrated annually on the last Monday of May and dedicated to the memory of fallen American men and women who died in all wars and armed conflicts. Initially, it was created to honor northern soldiers who died in the Civil War, but over time, it became a way to remember those who died in World War I & II, and then all wars.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday in the USA. Since then, every last Monday of the month of May is a day we honor those who died in all armed conflicts. It is also seen, in some circles, as the unofficial start of the summer season. How is this a subject for motivation? First of all, we can motivate ourselves and those around us to seek peaceful solutions to problems; We can educate ourselves on the effects of war, the value of peaceful coexistence, and we can build bridges of peace across the world.
Back in the old days, when WW I & II were part of the experience of our grandparents, many who went to war were not expected to return because the journey was brutal, the battles close up and fierce, and the weapons of war not as sophisticated as they are today. My Dad was a lowly Sergeant in the Burma war and, while he cherished his memories of survival and his sepia photos from that period, he was a strong advocate for peace and compromise. As I honor and celebrate the lives of our servicemen/women lost at war-zones around the world today, I would like to implore each of you and all the world leaders out there to make peace a key objective, to remember those who died with great reverence, and to treat our veterans with the utmost love, honor and respect; it is the least we can do. What a great post! I’m an American citizen but have never got the whole story behind Memorial Day, now I can even explain to my child the history behind it.
Memorial Day serves as a reminder for all of us that the freedom that we’re enjoying now isn’t free. We should be thankful for the sacrifices of our ancestors / war heroes / veterans who fought long and hard for this freedom.

I don’t know anyone who has lost their lives but plenty of family members that are serving. Praying for their safety!
It’s so important to remember to honor those who have given their lives in the service of this country. They deserve every ounce of respect we can give them.
I remember a few years ago learning the difference between Armed Forces Day, Veteran’s Day, and Memorial Day and which they all represent. My grandfather was in the Navy before he was discharged for medical reasons, and my father-in-law was in the Army for 30 years. They are both honored in different ways and on different days since my grandfather has passed away but my FIL is here and has retired from the Army. It’s definitely humbling to stop and remember what these men and women gave up, what their families and friends lost, when they decided to protect us.
It’s amazing what these men and women gave for us to have. To think that people are still sacrificing so much for what we have is humbling.
I spent Memorial day with my family. We ate outside and stroll the park.
I hate to see how retail giants have commercialize the Memorial Day weekend with massive sales and other extravaganza. Most of the people have forgotten the true spirit of this day that is remembering those who lost their lives while serving our country.
I certainly honor all those who have risked their lives for our independence! Not a day goes by where I am not thankful!

Nobody close to me lost their lives in combat, however I have such respect to anybody who has sacrificed their lives.

I am always thankful to those who served. Although I don’t have or know someone closed to me who has lost their lives during services. My heart aches for all of them and I am saying a prayer for them at this moment.

We don’t have anything like this in the UK, which I think is a real shame. We only tend to remember those who died in WW1 and WW2 on the anniversaries of the end of those wars… there is nothing to commemorate those who died in other conflicts.
Memorial day is so important! In England, we had it a few months ago but any chance to remember those who’ve come before us, is one we should take!
Marcus is a vet and served in the Marines before we met. He is proud to have served. He always take a moment to thank fellow vets for their service. Without their efforts to protect our country we would not enjoy the freedoms that we so often take for granted. That’s why I am so proud of my Marine.

As a veteran, Memorial Day reminds me that our freedom isn’t free.
Wait….there’s Veterans’ Day, too? I have only gotten to know about it today. I do honour both, my small way. That is, by offering my energy and time at medical camps for our service-people.

I don’t really know anyone who has done this. I think a part of me is happy about that because it means everyone I know is still alive but I do know that my boyfriend now almost died covering a civil war. He’s a photojournalist.

I don’t have any family that I know who ever fought in a war, but I have visited many memorials during my trips and it is always heartbreaking seeing all those graves, some of unknown soldiers. I wish we would live in a peaceful world, where violence and wars would not exist.

I can never thank the valiant men and women who liberated my country from the Japanese. They gave up their lives so we can have the freedom we enjoy now. One day a year is not enough to remember and thank them for their selfless deed.
A big salute to all the heroes who laid down their lives so we could sleep peacefully in our beds at night.
I live outside of America and here in Europe we also celebrate such anniversaries, only a little differently and on other days. I really like the message you mentioned that we can motivate ourselves to seek peaceful solutions and build bridges based on the experience of war.

You do put so much effort into your articles. I don’t know how your brain is able to put out so much information. I know you do a lot of research before posting. That is awesome. I didn’t know that Memorial Day was only a national holiday in 1971!
Even ordinary people could perform extraordinary feat under extreme circumstances. Who would imagine that the normal passengers could sacrifice themselves against the terrorist during the 9/11 crash.
I love how that quote says it is not to mourn soldiers but to praise the dead. We need to remember that one of the biggest parts of Memorial Day is “honor”

I know I have many veterans in my family, including my dad. Thankfully none of them lost their lives in the process. But it is important to remember those who have fallen and bled and died for our freedoms.
I have not lost any family members in war, but I have a number who’ve served in wartime – my father was in WWII, several younger uncles served in Vietnam, and one of my brothers was a career Navy man…
My dad has recently retired from the military and as long as I can remember Memorial Day has always been a day to remember the fallen. To thank those that fought so courageously so that we could enjoy the freedoms that we have today. It’s always been a day to show respect and not just a day to host a barbecue.
I love the message behind the memorial day. It is appreciation and endless love and pride for people.
My grandpa served and he’s always worn his uniform proud. He’s gone now so this really resonates with me: It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.
I celebrated my Memorial Day in New York at the Rockefeller Plaza. People including us all honored the people who served.

I feel so touched by how special the post is, as a way to honour Memorial Day. Over here, we call it ‘Madaraka Day’ and it’s time to honour our fallen heroes, some unsung. They died that we’d be free and that has to be one of the best sacrifices people could give us. We celebrate all those heroes. Happy and blessed Memorial Day.

It’s a thought provoking time of year. For us in the UK it’s in November when we remember our war dead. Sometimes I think we should spend just as much time remembering those veterans who survived but continue to suffer because of their experiences.

Wow, what thoughtful research and a tribute you’ve written here. Too many people get stuck in the star-spangled celebration but forget to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Beautiful post and clear reminder that holidays aren’t all about presents and barbeques; someone gave their life for that very freedom. Our town recently hosted a flag of honor display on Memorial Day with over 300 flags. It was quite moving when you realize each flag represents a life; similar to the feeling of Arlington Cemetery. God Bless our Soldiers!
It is a somber holiday, but one that I think everyone should hold dear. I also think it would be a great day to call a veteran. Veterans and active duty have alarmingly high numbers of suicides these days.

This is a great reminder for the holiday. It is easy to take for granted why you get the day off, but this is one day that wee just shouldn’t forget. I think it is great to think about how to give back to the families of service members on this day.
This great sacrifice from our brave servicemen/women is something we should remember and cherish. This great history should be pass on to the future generation of this country to remind them how and why they should pay respect to our beloved heroes.
How can we not remember these men and women who fought the wars? They gave up their lives – the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today. If I could only give the families they left behind a big tight hug, I would!
I had several family members serve in Vietnam, including my dad who was in the Airforce. But none of them lost their lives thankfully. We should remember those who have served before and fight to never have to have another war where we lose people.
Our heroes sacrificed so much so that we can achieve the freedom that we enjoy nowadays. We shouldn’t forget that and give respect for all of them.
What a wonderful tribute to Memorial Day and all that it stands for! What does Memorial Day mean to me? It means remembering and honoring those who have lost their lives to fight for our country. My grandfather was a Korean War veteran who was lucky enough to survive the war but many of his friends were not as fortunate.
Yes, Memorial Day, for me, is the start of summer. But it’s also the day to remember those who fought for our freedom for sure.
I love this post and yes it’s a big honour and they are our hero. We will always honour and celebrate them.

its interesting to think about the kind of person who would sacrifice a lot for the sake of their respective country. i really can’t imagine what it would be like to give up that much all at once.
I am so happy we have this day in our culture to honor and celebrate those who sacrificed the ultimate for our country. We have lost in our family, and my heart goes out to all who can relate on this day too. Kudos to those who serve, and offer to protect all that we know.
Memorial Day this year is especially important as we are reminded almost daily of the great sacrifices that the men and women of the Armed Services make to defend our way of life.
It is important to remember the people who have died in order for us to live in a better world. We don’t have memorial day in my country unfortunately.
I know many people who served but none who lost lives. I cannot imagine how others must feel who lost loved ones.

When ever I think of fallen soldiers and men/women who died on the course of our safety I always feel like I owe them much more than praise because of their selfless sacrifice to their fellow sacrifice may they all rest in peace and in God’s blossom.
Nowadays, we remember not only our brave soldiers of the war, but also those many modern day heroes. They are all unselfish.
