It may be possible to gild pure gold, but who can make his mother more beautiful? Mahatma Gandhi
Arise then…women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts! Whether your baptism be of water or of tears! Julia Ward Howe

Happy Mother’s Day Week: Mother’s Day is a special time in our lives because we stop to think about the women, biological or not, who have mothered us, guided us and mentored us in so many ways. Too many of us take our mothers for granted because they are the steady rock of ages that we can rely on to be there to catch us. We turn to them with confidence yet forget to express our gratitude to them on a regular basis. Don’t forget to say thank you to your Mom and give her hugs and kisses. She has carried you through a lifetime of struggles and achievements. What memories do I hold of my mother? There are so many and I have shared a few over the years. Some stand out because they were life lessons I still hold close. My mom always encouraged us to share. Kids can be very selfish over toys, treats and such, and we were not immune from moments of selfishness. My Mom was always looking for ways to show us that our privileges were not to be enjoyed alone, while others suffered. She routinely gave our toys and clothes away and was always reminding us to be grateful.

My Mom was full of fire in so many ways; good and not so good. She was a great cook and loved gardening, fashion and adventure. She had a fiery temper and could switch gears at the drop of a hat. She was passionate about things that held her gaze and giving back to those in need was very important to her. Her charitable nature is one I still hold dear because, as a child of privilege, it could have been easy to live a protected life and ignore the suffering around me. I did not and my mother made sure we did not. I speak about her in the past tense now even though she is alive, you might wonder. WHY? Because she can no longer do the things she loves … she had a massive stroke 20+ years ago and while she recovered, part of her body is paralyzed and her memory is impaired. She recognizes my oldest brother but has only intermittent recollections of her other four children, including me. Every year, when I celebrate Mother’s Day, it is bittersweet because I am reminded that my Dad passed away on May 9th and that my Mother is somewhat lost to me because of her health. I love my parents and cherish my memories of them because I am reminded of the frailty of our human existence and how important it is to be fully present in our children’s lives in every way we can.

Motivation Mondays: Why Mother’s Day Matters

MY MOTHER By Ann Taylor
Who sat and watched my infant head
When sleeping on my cradle bed,
And tears of sweet affection shed?
My Mother.

When pain and sickness made me cry,
Who gazed upon my heavy eye,
And wept for fear that I should die?
My Mother.

Who taught my infant lips to pray
And love God’s holy book and day,
And walk in wisdom’s pleasant way?
My Mother.

And can I ever cease to be
Affectionate and kind to thee,
Who wast so very kind to me,
My Mother?

Ah, no! the thought I cannot bear,
And if God please my life to spare
I hope I shall reward they care,
My Mother.

When thou art feeble, old and grey,
My healthy arm shall be thy stay,
And I will soothe thy pains away,
My Mother. via poemhunter

Mother o’ Mine by Rudyard Kipling
If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
The babe at first feeds upon the mother’s bosom, but it is always on her heart.” Henry Ward Beecher
If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine! via famouspoemsandpoets

There’s no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one. Jill Churchill
Being a mother is not about what you gave up to have a child, but what you’ve gained from having one. Sunny Gupta
A mother’s happiness is like a beacon, lighting up the future but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories. Honore de Balzac

How have Mothers motivated us throughout the ages? Many women juggle multiple demands in their households and, to the untrained eye, it might seem magical or even easy to watch how many mothers run their households, some even on shoestring budgets. But, around the world, Moms perform endless chores and time consuming tasks to accomplish their household goals daily. As a child, I was fortunate to have a few “mother figures” around me; from Mommy Bates in Essex, to my own mother, grandmothers, and all the great women who motivated me and added their wisdom to my life, I learned how much work it takes to manage a household and keep kids fed, everyone loved, and endless bills paid. My Mom was an active mom who also had a side business; she was always running around attending to her clients, managing the staff at home who managed us when we came back from school. It was not an easy job at all and there were challenges that did arise over time. I still admire my mom’s willingness to take on the enormous challenges that came her way, and part of her can-do spirit has stayed with me and it inspires me whenever the going gets tough. What are your memories of childhood days with your mom?

A Story: Advice A Mother Would Give
A little bear cub was confused about how to walk. “What do I do first?” he asked his mother. “Do I start with my right foot or my left? Or both front feet and then my back feet? Or do I move both feet on one side and then both feet on the other?”
His mother answered, “Just quit thinking and start walking.”

For My Mother by May Sarton
Once more
I summon you
Out of the past
With poignant love,
You who nourished the poet
And the lover.
I see your gray eyes
Looking out to sea
In those Rockport summers,
Keeping a distance
Within the closeness
Which was never intrusive
Opening out
Into the world.
And what I remember
Is how we laughed
Till we cried
Swept into merriment
Especially when times were hard.
And what I remember
Is how you never stopped creating
And how people sent me
Dresses you had designed
With rich embroidery
In brilliant colors
Because they could not bear
To give them away
Or cast them aside.
I summon you now
Not to think of
The ceaseless battle
With pain and ill health,
The frailty and the anguish.
No, today I remember
The creator,
The lion-hearted.

To My Mother by Edgar Allan Poe
Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of “Mother,”
Therefore by that dear name I long have called you-
You who are more than mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you
In setting my Virginia’s spirit free.
My mother- my own mother, who died early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I loved so dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its soul-life. via famouspoemsandpoets

Ladysmith Black Mambazo/Mint Juleps “The Lion Sleeps Tonight

Children are the anchors that hold a mother to life. Sophocles
Motherhood is… difficult and… rewarding. Gloria Estefan
We should no longer allow a mother to be defined as “just a mom”. It is on her back that great nations are built. We should no longer allow any woman’s voice to be drowned out or disregarded. As we affirm other women, and as we teach our sons, husbands and friends to hold them in the highest regard, we honor both the mothers whose shoulders we’ve stood on and the daughters who will one day stand tall on ours.Oprah Winfrey
Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws. Barbara Kingsolver

Two of the best gifts our mothers give us are the gift of life and cherished memories. Our mothers bring us into this world and leave us memories that add to our narratives of their lives. Once, I remember my Mom appeared on a radio show and sang the popular The Lion Sleeps Tonight song. We thought it was hysterical because she had an okay singing voice but was always dramatic in her delivery. Another time, my Mom entered a singing competition on TV, something to do with who could make the sound “ohhhh” the longest, and I believe she either won or came a close second. My siblings and I were mortified yet thoroughly fascinated by her daring nature. It was something that might seem innocuous today, but not so common for a married woman, back in the day. One thing I can say for sure is that there was never a dull moment around my mother as she made sure to add drama, joy and humor to our lives. She gave us lots of memories sprinkled with her special brand of love. For Mother’s Day, I send happy cheers and blessings to all Mothers everywhere. If your memories are happy, so-so or sad, know that your life is a celebration and for that we must be thankful to our Mothers.

Mothers Are a Special Gift by Faye Diane Kilday
Mothers are a special gift sent
from God above,
They bless us with their nurturing,
And fill us with their love.
They pick us up when we are down,
And when we’re sad they know,
They’re always there to lend a hand,
And guide us as we go.
And mothers are like special jewels
that can’t be bought or sold…
A mother’s love’s more precious
than the rarest gem or gold.
Yes, mothers are a special gift sent
from God above,
And we’ll be blessed forever with
their never ending love!

The poems you selected are beautiful! I’ve been a bit stuck on what all to do for my mother for Mother’s Day, and your poems have inspired me to select a poem to include in her mother’s day card (I’d write a poem myself, but sadly I’m not too creative).

I think your post is beautiful and that it is wonderful to celebrate the mothers of the world. I also have a hard time with mother’s day as I lost my own mom ten years ago the day after mother’s day and have no biological children of my own. In my country Mother’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March. I remember how in school, each year, we used to make something hand made with the class as gifts for moms. Then, we would bring it home together with a bunch of hyacinthus – which are the symbol of spring. It is one of the most important days in the year.

I can never thank my mother enough for all that she did for me. She recently passed and it pains me to think about celebrating Mother’s day without her.

Please let me share part of a dialogue in a drama series I recently watched. It is about a mom teaching her child about finding happiness. Here goes- “In the grasslands, there was a Mother Lion with her son. One day, the son asked his mother, ‘Where is happiness?’ The Mother Lion replied, ‘Happiness is on your tail.’ So the son kept chasing his tail, going round and round but could never catch it. Then the Mother Lion smiled and said, ‘My son, happiness is not obtained like that. As long as you keep your spirits up and move forward, happiness will chase after you.'”

I wish you a great day ahead.

in the famous words of Charles stanley…

Motherhood is a great honor and privilege, yet it is also synonymous with servanthood. Every day women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families. Whether they are awake at night nursing a baby, spending their time and money on less-than-grateful teenagers, or preparing meals, moms continuously put others before themselves.”

Indeed, Mothers should not only be celebrated in a day but everyday!

When I was a child I don’t understand my mother why she needs to think about herself and ourselves (as her kids) in everything that she is going to do even she tried to explained it to me so many times. Now, that I am also a mother I fully understand why she always acting like that. It’s really hard to explain but my heart is so grateful because I am so lucky to have a mother like my MOM. The poem ‘My Mother’ brought tears to my eyes and brought to mind my late mother. My childhood memories are of her seeing me off for school in the morning and waiting with a hot meal when we returned in the afternoon. Only when I was a teenager did I realize how much she had sacrificed to do that for my brother and I. She went from working full time before I started school to winding down to half days then 3 days a week. Fortunately she had her own business but it did impact her business income significantly. She never complained though or ever talked about it.

Poe is one of my favorite classic authors, but I had no idea he lost his mother young – maybe that’s where some of the darkness in his life and writing came from. I have not heard of the Try The World box program, but have to say, it sounds right up our alley! (both my husband and I are foodies…)

Our mothers show selfless love and courage throughout our lives. While I believe every day should be Mother’s day it is important to keep one day aside to truly appreciate all that they have done for us 🙂

Being a mother is not only means you have to give birth. There are many ways to become a mother, and the fact that you are ready to become one emotionally is admirable.

I am so glad you have such great memories of your mother. Aging is hard especially when it comes to losing memory and having to take care of someone who was so wonderful to you but doesn’t remember you. I hope you had a lovely mothers day.

Motherhood is such a noble thing. I miss my mother whom I’ve lost to a tragic accident 15 years ago. But I keep her memory alive by remembering all the wonderful things she did for me and my siblings when she was here with us.
