Motivation Mondays: Peace with Our Past

Motivation Mondays: Peace with Our Past

Motivation Mondays: Peace with Our Past

Two things prevent us from happiness: living in the past and observing others. Unknown
If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the moment. Unknown
I want the peace in knowing that is wasn’t for lack of hustling that I missed a target for my dream. I want to know that the one thing in my control was under control. Jon Acuff
Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones. Thich Nhat Hanh

Have You made peace with your past? Why do some of us spend so much time punishing ourselves for events that have long passed us by? Until we make peace with our past and step fully into the present, we will continue to suffer the pangs of regret over things that no longer serve us. Of course, it is not so easy or simple to discard past hurts and dance into the sunset with a big smile on our face but, we must do the necessary work to help us heal.

Time is a great healer and seeking professional help, turning back to our faith for comfort and trying other positive self-help approaches can get us back on track to rekindling the inner joy we seek. The past is a great repository of experiences that can teach us about ways to navigate in the present, but it is just one measure. We need to delve deep and find new and innovative ways to help us grow. Stop carrying the burdens of the past or madness of the future. Stay present.

Be at Peace by R. Queen
Be at peace,
Tempest tossed seas of soul,
Give me rest,
From doubt, and fear
Sun find my face,
Light find my heart,
Song find my story,
Smile find my face,
Be at peace,
Be at peace,
For my life is infinite,
And these storms,
Have raged too long,
Even winter,
Must surrender spring
– R. Queen

If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present. falsely attributed to Lao Tzu
I don’t carry the burden of the past or the madness of the future. I live in the present. Narendra Modi
Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are. Hafsat Abiola
See, when you drive home today, you’ve got a big windshield on the front of your car. And you’ve got a little bitty rearview mirror. And the reason the windshield is so large and the rearview mirror is so small is because what’s happened in your past is not near as important as what’s in your future. Joel Osteen

How do we make peace with our past? For years, I mourned the passing of my Dad and the last conversation I had with him. I was getting ready to leave for work. I was living on the upper west side in Manhattan at the time, and I had to catch a train downtown to BMCC-CUNY to teach an English class.  Dad called, and I was in a hurry to wrap things up and head out. It was brief. We had so much to say and that needed to be said but… the conversation was brief. He told me he loved me and, mind you, my Dad was quite the conservative man so those words were special. They should have been celebrated and shared and repeated and discussed but… our conversation was brief. A month later, he was gone. We must find our way back to center and replace the past with memories of the good times. It’s not easy, it takes time but, we will and can get there.

We can start by taking small steps on our road to healing. First recognize that what happened in the past is done and does not need to taint our present. Forgive and embrace your wounded inner child and direct your vision forward. If we can learn to focus forward and not get caught in the trap of stuffing our heads with stuff, we can begin the journey back on the road to regain control of our emotions, change our thinking, and start the healing process we need to help us put our past to rest. Be of good cheer and stay encouraged. Make peace with your past and live.

Kiss For Peace: Make Love Not War On World Peace Day

I Dream A World by Langston Hughes
I dream a world where man
No other man will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn
I dream a world where all
Will know sweet freedom’s way,
Where greed no longer saps the soul
Nor avarice blights our day.
A world I dream where black or white,
Whatever race you be,
Will share the bounties of the earth
And every man is free,
Where wretchedness will hang its head
And joy, like a pearl,
Attends the needs of all mankind-
Of such I dream, my world!via poemhunter

A Story: Peace XVIII by Khalil Gibran
The tempest calmed after bending the branches of the trees and leaning heavily upon the grain in the field. The stars appeared as broken remnants of lightning, but now silence prevailed over all, as if Nature’s war had never been fought.

At that hour a young woman entered her chamber and knelt by her bed sobbing bitterly. Her heart flamed with agony but she could finally open her lips and say, “Oh Lord, bring him home safely to me. I have exhausted my tears and can offer no more, oh Lord, full of love and mercy. My patience is drained and calamity is seeking possession of my heart. Save him, oh Lord, from the iron paws of War; deliver him from such unmerciful Death, for he is weak, governed by the strong. Oh Lord, save my beloved, who is Thine own son, from the foe, who is Thy foe. Keep him from the forced pathway to Death’s door; let him see me, or come and take me to him.”

Quietly a young man entered. His head was wrapped in bandage soaked with escaping life.

He approached he with a greeting of tears and laughter, then took her hand and placed against it his flaming lips. And with a voice with bespoke past sorrow, and joy of union, and uncertainty of her reaction, he said, “Fear me not, for I am the object of your plea. Be glad, for Peace has carried me back safely to you, and humanity has restored what greed essayed to take from us. Be not sad, but smile, my beloved. Do not express bewilderment, for Love has power that dispels Death; charm that conquers the enemy. I am your one. Think me not a specter emerging from the House of Death to visit your Home of Beauty.

“Do not be frightened, for I am now Truth, spared from swords and fire to reveal to the people the triumph of Love over War. I am Word uttering introduction to the play of happiness and peace.”

Then the young man became speechless and his tears spoke the language of the heart; and the angels of Joy hovered about that dwelling, and the two hearts restored the singleness which had been taken from them.

At dawn the two stood in the middle of the field contemplating the beauty of Nature injured by the tempest. After a deep and comforting silence, the soldier said to his sweetheart, “Look at the Darkness, giving birth to the Sun.” via famouspoetsandpoems

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly. Unknown
Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain. The energy it takes to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life. What is it you would let go of today? Mary Manin Morrissey

What would you let go of today? If there is something in your past that has dictated the burden of pain you currently carry around, reflect on why you are still carrying it around. What are you planning on doing with your life w/wo pain? To make peace with our past, we must be fully present. Surrender the yoke of past wounds for the peace of the present.

White Noise by Barbara Vance
In all the world
There’s nothing like
The sound of falling snow –

The only noise
I’ve ever known
That makes the clocks move slow.

The only sound
That sweeps away
The din of city streets,

And wraps around,
In soft embrace,
’Most everyone it meets.

A sound that’s not
A sound at all –
A quiet, soft and dear,

That comforts all
The sleepy souls
Who sit, and watch, and hear. via suziebitner

The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. via onbeing.org

I lost my mother in 1996 to suicide. There were signs, things she said before that had I been more aware maybe I could have made a difference. This is a common feeling of guilt felt by those of us that ore survivors of suicide. Logic tell me that I would not likely have been able to change her fate.

Sometimes, no matter what we do it seems that we can’t moved on because of the past. Indeed time is a great healer. We need patience and wait until it heals.

Making peace with your past can be extremely hard. As a method of learning and self-preservation, our minds are naturally conditioned to cling to the past, that’s true! but i believe forgiving ourself first will heal all

I can really relate to the first quote, “Sometimes you just have to make peace with your past in order to keep your future from becoming a constant battle.” My grandma used to tell me the same thing when i was a child and i never thought I would need it in my life actively until recently. Dealing with the past is definitely a matter of accepting the past as past and not letting it bleed over into the present. Far too often we are a prisoner of the things which happened to us. But we have a myriad of choices before us now on how to behave and move into the future.

Our past experiences play a huge role in who we are and what we want. We all go through learning experiences that help us develop happier lives, but we can also be left wounded by losses, injustices, and regrets. If you are unable to let go of your past, you’ll struggle to give the future the attention it deserves, and you’ll miss out on the joy of living in the present. However, letting go is easier said than done, and you might find your mind constantly pulled back to the past even if you have a genuine desire to move on.

I believe that finding peace within is a lifetime journey. It requires finding the perfect balance of animal, spirit and ego.

Peace of mind is very important. Peace with our past also matters because unless we can make amends with the past, we won’t be able to move forward

Making peace of the past is forgetting about it, not just avoiding it.

It has taken me years to get up the courage to deal with my past. There was a lot that I blamed my mother for, my father for and a lot I blamed on myself even though I was a child. I carried a lot of that burden into my adult life and it has affected many of my relationships. This has been the year to work on myself and figure out the lessons I needed to learn and keep them with me for the future.
