What does the term Resurrection mean to you? With Easter and Passover almost upon us, and Spring resurrecting colorful blooms around us, the operative word for this season is – resurrection. This is a time of rebirth, renewal, return, rising and hope for things to come. While I must admit that the term is tied to the Easter celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the dead, it also has significance in the secular world. The changing seasons are a time of death and rebirth and, with each renewal,  we deepen our belief in the continuity of life and nature, and all that it offers.  We become firm in our belief that the sun will rise and set on schedule, that night will replace day, and that the breath we take for granted will remain constant.

With each seasonal shift, we experience movement within, and it is our free will to make choices to help us grow during this season or choices that make us stagnate. Maintaining the status quo has its pros and cons because, like a body of water, without a constant flow and movement to flush out the debris and bring in new life/water, we become frustrated and give up. Since humans are such creatures of habit, it is important for us to make time to shift gears and refresh our bodies and minds. The changing seasons are one way we get forced to do so, and the other involves honoring the traditions we grew up with, and using that time to reflect and stretch … this could all be viewed through the lens of a resurrection.

The literal resurrection of every soul who has lived and died on earth is a certainty, and surely one should make careful preparation for this event. A glorious resurrection should be the goal of every man and woman, for resurrection will be a reality. Ezra Taft Benson

The Resurrection reflects Possibilities: How is the season pregnant with possibilities? With each passing day, we adjust to the changes, the arrivals and departures occurring in nature. We see our days grow longer, the nights grow shorter, and april showers arrive to cleanse the earth and get us all to reawaken from our temporary hibernation.   One of the special gifts we receive at Easter is a spirit of renewal; it is a time of rebirth and an opportunity to start afresh again. We can resurrect plans we set aside and take that extra edge off by accomplishing all the things we put aside. Another gift of Easter is a return to Hope; as we look around us and contemplate the conflicts and instability around the world, we can build up Hope by focusing on participating in good works for our communities and ourselves.

This is a great time to take stock of efforts we have made, so far, this year. It is a great time for a paradigm shift; a time to let go of old and hackneyed ways of thinking/being and try something new to motivate us on our journey. Are we on track with our goals? What is motivating us to stay true? What is hindering our progress?  How are you planning to celebrate this important season? What traditions have influenced your life and which ones do you still celebrate? Let’s consider the questions and, if we are lagging behind, this is a great time to jump-start our 2019 goals.

Do you celebrate Easter/Passover in your household? We do celebrate both in my household because I’m Christian and my ex-hubby is Jewish. Our children grew up celebrating both traditions and I am grateful that we did.  I love Easter and Passover because they are both favorite celebrations that bring communities and families together; we gather to share the celebration of freedom, resurrection, partake of a Seder meal, enjoy some chocolates and good food, and reflect on who we are and why we matter. My kids were raised in a household where both are valued and celebrated. The long table is a Passover Seder. The short photo of yellow flowers and one place setting is an Easter brunch. Whatever you celebrate, love and respect are key. Below, I am re-sharing some vital information on both traditions. Read them and enjoy the season!

What about Easter? Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his death by crucifixion
Easter Day covers the fifty day season from Easter Sunday through Pentecost.
Easter has a special flower, the white lily, which symbolizes the resurrection.
Painted Easter eggs were originally called Pysanka, and they were painted bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring.
Easter is a moveable feast which means that it is not on a set day every year but falls between March 22nd and April 25th; this year, 2019, it falls on April 21st.

As for the Easter bunny and egg, the bunny was first mentioned by Georg Franck von Frankenau’s De Ovis Paschalibus (Easter Bunny Eggs) in the 17th Century. Stories of rabbits laying Easter eggs were shared in Pennsylvania in the 19th century and the German legend of Osterhas told of good children receiving brightly colored eggs for Easter.  The festive air, spirited church services, brightly colored new dresses, and chocolate eggs made Easter one of my favorites.

What about Passover? Passover holiday is called Pesach in Hebrew.
Passover Seder is a festive family meal that is shared on either the first or second night of passover
Passover references the passing over of the first-born Jewish males when the death plague hit Egypt.
The Haggadah is a Jewish text that tells the story of the Passover and portions are read during the Seder.
Passover holiday has three names: Pesach – literally meaning the Passover sacrifice; Hag Hamatzot – Feast of Unleavened Bread; and Zeman Heirutenu – the Season of Our Freedom
Traditionally, four cups of wines are consumed at the festive meal of Passover night and Matzoh, unleavened bread, is eaten for seven or all eight days of Passover. Dayeynu is the popular, traditional Hebrew song performed during Passover. This year, 2019, Passover starts on April 19 and concludes on April 27

        I’ve always celebrated Easter from childhood and now. Although I understand Easter in adulthood, my childhood memories and connection with Easter are mainly Easter baskets, Easter bunnies, egg hunts and dresses. I want my kids to have more understanding of the meaning now rather than later in life.

    I do celebrate Easter but as an Orthodox, ours is on the 27th and not this weekend. I think that a good example of resurrection and being humble during these days is the tragedy that happened in France with Notre Dame Cathedral. So many people have jumped in to help rebuild it, it was so impressive.

    I do love so much that Easter is representative of Christ but also representative of Rebirth and of new life in the world. I do know that this year has been hard, but I do celebrate Easter and I do hope it represents new life and change this year. I could definitely use a change as I have had many things to deal with as my parents are getting older and I’m having to care for them.

    There is so much about this time of year that is beautiful. Most cultures and religions have something to celebrate rebirth this time of year. A lot of talk about New Year resolutions in January but even though that’s a new calendar year it’s still the middle of dreary winter months for many of us. It’s no wonder we get pulled back down in February and no one really reaches their resolutions. A new spring, though, that’s a great time to re-focus and grow.

    Resurrection for me is to be free. Free from bondage of worldly desires. Free from worry and pain. Our Lord’s promise that He will come back and save the righteous. We must keep this in mind every Easter Sunday. It is not about bunnies and sweet treats and Easter baskets. Easter is the time to believe in that promise that God gave us.

    My wife is a Christian and surprisingly we were discussing with 10 yr. old daughter about Easter and she was asking about why do the dates keep changing for every Easter, after going through your post I can give her a substantial answer for her question. This year she is taking her holy communion and she is all excited about the D day :-)…! thanks for such an inspiring read….:-)

    Easter has been my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember. The joy of life “coming back” – the landscape turning green, the birds chirping, the first flowers blooming, constricting, heavy winter coat banned until next year. Yay!

    This is one of my favourite time of the year to get out with the camera. Go into the parks and and trails. Life is coming back home after the long cold winter and preparing for their new families. New growth and a light not seen in months. There is an endless amount of photo opportunities.

    That Victor Hugo saying lightens up the Easter theme. I am a Christian, my son is only 3 this year and I don’t think he is too excited for the date that’s coming soon, even though he painted eggs last year. 🙂 Anyhow, I am looking forward to all the traditions Easter brings to us, the family reunions and blessings.

    Spring time is my favorite season. I think its great how you celebrate both passover and easter with your children so that they appreciate the community instead of the rituals. Many people have it backwards.

    I may not be very religious, but we do celebrate Easter and observe the Lenten practices that were taught to us since we were kids. We usually start our Easter Sunday by attending Mass, followed by a get-together lunch with the entire family. Hope you have a wonderful and blessed Easter with your loved ones, too! 🙂

    Every Spring I get remotivated to move forward with my goals in a much quicker fashion then in winter. To me Spring is energizing and snaps me back to reality and am inspired to make changes in myself as well.

    I mean the Resurrection part for me is the leaving of winter and the return of spring, all those trees and wildlife getting back into nature after being absent from it, of course it can mean different things depending on person to person, we celebrate Easter in my household although I am not necessarily Catholic, but still, other people celebrate it and it means something to them 😀

    Spring is definitely all about possibilities and new beginnings. Easter gives us that with the idea that Jesus died to save us from sin, but nature also shows us that every day this time of year as the trees start to bud and flowers begin to bloom.

    Yesterday, we experienced the 6-magnitude earthquake and some parts of the country are been damaged. This reminds us that all goes in a cycle of life, we rise and fall, then rise up again. A test of being resilient.

    I used to celebrate Easter more often. Now that I am on call at my job it’s hard for me. And i was at work for 16hrs that day. But I can’t wait for next year since my contract is about to be over
