The Seven Selves BY KAHLIL GIBRAN
In the stillest hour of the night, as I lay half asleep, my seven
selves sat together and thus conversed in whisper:
First Self: Here, in this madman, I have dwelt all these years,
with naught to do but renew his pain by day and recreate his sorrow
by night. I can bear my fate no longer, and now I rebel.
Second Self: Yours is a better lot than mine, brother, for it is
given to me to be this madman’s joyous self. I laugh his laughter
and sing his happy hours, and with thrice winged feet I dance
his brighter thoughts. It is I that would rebel against my weary
existence.
Third Self: And what of me, the love-ridden self, the flaming brand
of wild passion and fantastic desires? It is I the love-sick self
who would rebel against this madman.

Are you aware of your Seven Selves? Human beings are complex creatures with complicated emotional makeups. We have all sorts of expectations, spoken/unspoken, real/unrealistic, that we place on ourselves and others. We can be kind and cruel, loving and hateful, mature and petty… all in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, we forget to cut ourselves some slack and stop being so bullish. We often take for granted the simple fact that we are changeable and somewhat unpredictable.  Does this sound like you? Of course not, some of you would say publicly as you cackle at the irony of exposure in private. But these qualities are what make us thinking humans. If we were predictable and one dimensional, we would be cut out cartoon characters. Like it or not, we all have our shadow side and it’s not always pretty. However, part of our life’s work is to be reflective and make peace/friends with all our seven selves so we can present our best effort to the world.

Recently, I was reading Kahlil Gibran’s, The Seven Selves, (see excerpts in blockquotes above and below and the full poem at end of this post), and it got me thinking about our relationships and interactions with others. The beauty and power of the poem is that the poet uses the time between our waking and sleeping state, a period of vulnerability, to readily lift his public mask so his seven selves can have a dialogue about their role in his life. Each self makes a cogent argument as to why it is time to rebel against the madman. They have expectations about their value to his existence and are unhappy with the current outcomes. Keep in mind that these are reflections of the poet’s inner self and are not separate from him.  Think about the irony of this situation. If we don’t always live up to our own expectations, why do we expect others to deliver on theirs 100%?  We often have unspoken and even unrealistic expectations of others and when they don’t fulfill our wants/needs, we become disappointed. Who do we have to blame under those circumstances?  As the popular quote goes, “Unspoken and Unrealistic expectations are premeditated resentments.” Think about it.

Fourth Self: I, amongst you all, am the most miserable, for naught
was given me but odious hatred and destructive loathing. It is
I, the tempest-like self, the one born in the black caves of Hell,
who would protest against serving this madman.
Fifth Self: Nay, it is I, the thinking self, the fanciful self,
the self of hunger and thirst, the one doomed to wander without
rest in search of unknown things and things not yet created; it is
I, not you, who would rebel.
Sixth Self: And I, the working self, the pitiful labourer, who,
with patient hands, and longing eyes, fashion the days into images
and give the formless elements new and eternal forms—it is I, the
solitary one, who would rebel against this restless madman.

Which of our Seven Selves dominate? I think our temperament determines which of our seven selves holds sway in our lives. At different periods in our growth, we might see a couple dominate but it is not a linear experience. We can exhibit facets of all seven from day to day or week to week. Even, at certain trying periods in our lives or happier times, a few would take center stage and serve as our public face. However, we are more than what others see or perceive us to be. Can you identify the seven selves that Gibran writes about in this poem?  Start at the top of the post and work your way through each one until you meet the seventh self in the bottom segment of this post.

For the impatient among us, I’ll save you the suspense: Pain, Laughter, Love, Misery, Mind, Work, and Ego Self. For those of you who enjoy the esoteric arts, there is a Higher Self that the author doesn’t mention. The higher self is the witness of all the others. It is pure, non-judgemental and above all the rest. It is the still small voice that guides us and directs our path. Some might call it the voice of reason or the voice of the spirit. What would you call it?

Motivation Mondays: The Seven Selves

Seventh Self: How strange that you all would rebel against this
man, because each and every one of you has a preordained fate to
fulfill. Ah! could I but be like one of you, a self with a determined
lot! But I have none, I am the do-nothing self, the one who sits
in the dumb, empty nowhere and nowhen, while you are busy re-creating
life. Is it you or I, neighbours, who should rebel?
When the seventh self thus spake the other six selves looked with
pity upon him but said nothing more; and as the night grew deeper
one after the other went to sleep enfolded with a new and happy
submission.
But the seventh self remained watching and gazing at nothingness,
which is behind all things.

Which of our Seven Selves are hidden? If we took an honest assessment of our personality/our character, our private and even our public face, would we be willing to admit that we have a shadow side that we never reveal to others? Actually, some of us have a shadow side we are afraid to reveal to ourselves let alone to others. But it is very much a human quality to be multifaceted and to temper some of our tendencies while emboldening others … think about it. More on this later.

I don’t know why anyone would want to spend their time with people who don’t motivate them or make them happy. That’s odd to me, but I guess I just don’t have that type of mindset. I love being with people who are motivated and driven and excited about life!

Such an interesting read, I haven’t heard of the term the seven selves before but while reading through I definitely identified with a lot of them. I think we all go through these periods and phases. For so long I think I was trapped in “the pitiful laborer” doing work I hated. Leaving was probably one of the best decisions for my mental state.

I’ve never heard of Kahlil Gibran’s poem, but it sounds beautiful, from the excerpt that I read. It’s a wonderful idea to be consciously aware of which of one’s Seven Selves are rising to the forefront of their personality; it undoubtedly helps us determine what emotions are controlling us in a given moment.

Wow, this one is fascinating, as most of yours are – but this one is really intriguing! I have never heard of the seven selves before, but I know it sometimes feels like they are all fighting with one another! Ironically, my hubby and I were talking earlier about how he had trouble getting to sleep last night, because his mind wouldn’t shut off and was going in all different directions. Maybe that was some of HIS seven selves conversing and/or arguing!

Interesting. I’ve never heard of the seven selves, but it does make sense. I always look at is as… we’re never really our true selves and we are constantly playing a role depending on what situation we are in. I think we can be our best selves or our true selves when we stop playing the roles and be consistent regardless of the situation or interaction. Maybe in my mind, the true self is ultimately the most dominant.

I love your posts! They are always eye opening and thought provoking. “If we don’t always live up to our own expectations, why do we expect others to deliver on theirs 100%?” That right there is something people need to consider more often. We really do need to examine ourselves and how we view the way things are meant to be inside out.

“Unspoken and Unrealistic expectations are premeditated resentments.” this really resonated with me, because in the last year I’ve come to realize that I do have high expectations of people that they probably aren’t aware of, which causes me to get upset, and really it is my fault for not properly communicating with others! I’ve been working on being more clear in my communication!

I have never thought of myself as being “seven selves” until this post. When it says our fifth self or the “thinkng self” is “the self of hunger and thirst” I can’t help but look at the way some people act or think when they are hungry. It’s almost as if all thought process goes out the window. Great post – as usual. Thanks for sharing!
