Motivation Mondays: Earth Hour #Connect2Earth

25/03/2019

“Earth Hour’s mission is three-fold. To bring people together through a symbolic hour-long event, to galvanize people into taking action beyond the hour, and to create an interconnected global community sharing the mutual goal of creating a sustainable future for the planet…” Andy Ridley, CEO Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and Co-Founder, Earth Hour Global

Healthy nature makes our life better by providing us with good food, clean air, and fresh water – but it is all under the threat of climate change and loss of biodiversity. This #EarthHour, join us on 30 March 2019 at 8:30pm local time, to switch off and speak up why nature matters. #Connect2Earth

Earth Hour by David Malouf
“The planet, saved for another day, stokes up
its slow-burning gases and toxic dust, gold rift and scarlet
gash that take our breath away; a world at its interminable
show of holy dying. And we go with it, the old
gatherer and hunter. To its gaudy-day, though the contribution
is small, adding our handsel of warm clay.”

What is Earth Hour? Are you aware of its impact? The impetus behind Earth Hour is to help us push beyond the hour and remember that we are all responsible for protecting our planet. It encourages us all to seize the moment by using a symbolic gesture, turning lights off for an hour, to create a movement and its impact is global. This year, Earth Hour 2019 will take place on Saturday, March 30,  between 8:30 and 9:30 pm. The 2019 theme is Reduce, Reuse, Change the Way We Live,” and the tagline for this year’s global campaign is Connect2Earth. This initiative is a way to remind each of us to come together to participate in ending global warming, to sustain/protect our planet, cut greenhouse gas emissions, better manage our energy resources and combat climatic changes.  Since its inception in 2007, people around the globe have joined in to act as a united voice against the abuse and destruction of our planet. While some might think that turning lights off globally on one day of the year is a tiny sacrifice, it is a powerful symbolic message that brings us all together. When we take even the smallest steps, the tiniest action, it reverberates and creates a a wave that spreads to millions and millions of people and households. Unless we do our part, we cannot expect others to take action.

How is Earth Hour accomplishing its mission? Each year, the message/mission and its three-fold goals, outlined by Andy Ridley in the first quote on this post,  expand beyond expectations to include more voices and locations.  In 2018, Over 188 countries, 17,000+ landmarks, 250 Ambassadors and 40 UNESCO world heritage sites created 3.5 billion impressions and participated in switching their lights off.  We expect even greater participation this year. This global event, coordinated by the World Wide Fund (WWF,) and other volunteer organizations is imperative because we continue to see the effects/changes in our climate conditions that worry both scientists and concerned citizens. Unless we act to encourage our leaders to honor the recommendations of the scientific community, our lives and the lives of our children/grandchildren will be at peril.   I have shared Earth Hour’s origins in block-quotes below. This year, the organizer Earth Hour.Org is encouraging all of us to go Connect2Earth and consider innovative ways to make a difference in our world; we can use our 60 minutes of darkness to see the light and recognize that we all play a part in sustaining our planet. The event will include activities in cities globally.

1. Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia in 2007. 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses participated that year.
2. A year later (2008), participation had exploded to over 50 million people in more than 35 countries and 371 cities and towns participating in getting the word out that a sustainable planet benefits all.
3. In 2009, participation grew even bigger as several millions more celebrated in about 88 countries and 4,000 cities and towns by switching their lights off for an hour and voting for action on climatic changes.
4. In the same year, 2009, the People’s Orb was created and traveled around the world until finally arriving at the United Nations for the final day of the historic 192-nation UN Climate Change Conference; UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon and over 100 heads of State were present. (The orb is “a shimmering silver sphere encasing a 350 gigabyte hard drive loaded with videos, images and documents representing the hundreds of millions of people who voted Earth to call for action on climate change.”)
5. In 2010, 128 nations participate and for the first time landmark and iconic buildings go dark in honor of this special hour.
6. In 2011, Earth hour lasted well beyond the hour as people were encouraged to consider and share more ways to sustain our planet. A moment of silence was observed for lives lost in the tsunami and earth quake in Japan.

“Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth… these are one and the same fight. We must connect the dots between climate change, water scarcity, energy shortages, global health, food security, and women’s empowerment. Solutions to one problem must be solutions for all.…” Ban Ki-moon

Do you participate in Earth Hour? Aside from the yearly themes that help us focus on key areas in the environment that need our support, the event forces us to recognize that we are all accountable to Mother Earth. Over the years, the themes have addressed pressing concerns of the moment. While they do vary, the basic premise of each campaign/theme is to maintain that a sustainable, protected planet benefits us all: In 2008 -Vote Earth, 2011- Beyond the Hour, 2012 – I will if you will, 2013- Earth Hour Forest, 2014 – Earth Hour Blue, 2015 – Change Climate Change, 2016 –  Places We Love, 2017 – Make Climate Matter, 2018 – Let Nature Shine. Switching off lights is a massive and symbolic global gesture reminding us to stop wasting natural resources, reduce our carbon footprint, and unite with like minded souls globally. How is it celebrated? From 8:30-9:30PM on the designated day, people around the world participate in Earth Hour by turning lights off and bringing attention to the fact that we, all of us, need to ensure that our planet is protected.

Earth hour is described as “a movement using the power of the crowd to protect the planet.” We live in a growing and changing world that continues to use resources and destroy the environment. We cannot sit back and expect others to carry the weight of ensuring we leave a healthy planet as a legacy for our children. Each of us can make a difference even in a small way. Start by turning those extra lights off. As we celebrate our 13th Lights Out, here are 7 things WWF suggests we can do to help us catch up on what this is all about, I’ve identified the key points for all of us to remember:
1. Exercise by candle light and Work up a sweat to raise your heart rate.
2. Go hiking.
3. Go sightseeing to your favorite landmarks. Identify those participating in Earth Hour
4. Get creative and make art in the dark.
5. Invite friends and family over for dinner.
6. Go stargazing.
7. Resolve to reduce your carbon footprint.

Let’s all celebrate the sustainable earth by joining in the effort to conserve energy. Turn those lights out.

7. In 2012, Earth hour not only broke its own global reach record, but it was the first time an astronaut turned the lights off in outer space. (Astronaut André Kuipers at the International Space Station). 152 countries and 6,950 cities and towns participated in Earth Hour and millions gathered to honor a pledge to protect the environment
8. In 2013, the world’s first Earth Hour Forest began in Uganda. Over 200,000 people joined the “I Will If You Will” challenge in the campaign to encourage people around us to commit to voluntary action for the environment and plan over 1 million trees.
9. In 2013, more landmark buildings, from the Empire State Building to Buckingham Palace,The Acropolis, The Eiffel Tower, Beijing National Stadium, The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tower of Pisa, Times Square and many more, went dark in honor of Earth Hour. Since then, many more have joined in. See  2016, 2017,2018, and 2019
10. In 2013, Vancouver, Canada was crowned as the first Global Earth Hour Capital for its dedication to green projects and development.
11. In 2014, Earth Hour launched the world’s first crowdfunding/crowdsourcing platform for the earth – The fundraising campaign collaborated with the WWF network and other partners. We can all support Earth Hour Blue today and everyday by making a donation to a cause. It’s never too late to do our part. In 2014, the goal was to remind us all that this is not just about lights out but about improving the planet.
12. Another important step in Earth Hour 2014 was the appointment of Spiderman as the first superhero ambassador for Earth Hour; the key message was for all of us to use our powers to be superheroes/heroines for the planet. As superheroes/heroines of planet earth, Earth Hour can inspire each of us to take charge in creating change and to inspire others.

Nature is not just…

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home. Gary Snyder
I owned the world that hour as I rode over it. Free of the earth, free of the mountains, free of the clouds, but how inseparably I was bound to them. Charles Lindbergh

Why Does Earth Hour Matter? It matters because it forces us to pause and consider what we are doing that contributes to the destruction of the world. By participating in events like Earth Hour and Earth Day that honor the world we live in, we can do our part to save our planet from becoming a depleted wasteland. However, keep in mind that Earth Hour, is Not Earth Day, even though they are clearly related.  We can make a difference by sharing invaluable information like the Earth Hour Toolkit and educating our loved ones. If you are an educator, here is a suggested check list of so many things you can do with your students; from joining in on the fun, to putting up posters, and even creating an edible garden with your students. There are choc-a-bloc things you can do with your classroom. Each of us can contribute our part even in the smallest way. Start TODAY!

13. Earth Hour 2015 created a new global campaign – Change Climate Change – to encourage us to take action on Global Warming. Earth Hour Blue is again running some crowdfunding efforts to raise funds for organized climate projects in the Philippines, India, Columbia Uganda and Indonesia.
14. 2016 was the 10th anniversary of the campaign’s beginnings in Sydney, Australia. Safety and gender were paramount after sex attacks in Sweden that led to cancellations.
15. The theme for 2017 was to “Shine a  Light On Climate Action” by switching to renewable, sustainable and clean energy.
16.  Earth Hour was celebrated  a week early in 2018 to avoid conflicting with Holy Saturday. The UNO joined in by turning off lights in its buildings around the world.
17.This year’s theme is Reduce, Reuse, Change the Way We Live and we can all find was to minimize waste globally.
18. The UNO launched a drive to highlight the environmental cost of staying fashionable and it is worth noting that designers are paying attention and looking for ways to reduce waste and be more innovative.

This quote is so powerful – “Humans are the only creatures in this world who cut the trees, make paper from it and then write ‘Save the trees’ on it” Come to think of it, it IS true! In my country, an environmentalist group is raising awareness on the damage to marine life caused by irresponsible disposal of single use plastic sachets. Hopefully, this movement would make large multinational companies compliant to single use plastic containers/sachets.

Sometimes I wonder most of the people here in the city are making it a bid deal, whereas many of us who experienced childhood to adulthood of lack of electricity never complains.
2-hours of lights-off is nothing compared to 2-weeks of electricity, and yet we are still happy. Rural people contribute more to this Earth Hour.

I think it’s really important to look after the earth all year round. I do my best to help but one person’s efforts aren’t going to make a whole lot of difference.

I have yet to attend an Earth Hour event. Having no electricity for sometime reminds me of my childhood. We used kerosene for lights.

No, I had never heard of Earth Hour until reading your post! Sounds like an amazing initiative, though. I especially like this motto: Reduce, Reuse, Change the Way We Live.

It’s pretty nice to see people gathering together to celebrate the Earth Hour this is really important for us to respect our mother earth and the nature. This will obviously help people to open their eyes about the situation nowadays.

We have times that we also observe Earth hour and I shall say that it’s a truly rewarding activity to do because in that simple way, we can give back to our Mother Earth.

I think we should definitely protect the thing that has sustained our lives for as long as human existence, we should definitely start giving back!

Thank you for always sharing such great advice. This quote really spoke to me personally, “If we do not permit the earth to produce beauty and joy, it will in the end not produce food, either.” Joseph Wood Krutch

I always neglect to participate in this kinds of events, but it’s a great reminder of our responsibility to protect the planet and not to take our resources for granted.
