Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!  Sunday, March 17 is the official day to celebrate this popular, international holiday but many start the celebrations early; last weekend, many of us joined throngs of people in colorful parades everywhere.  This is a special occasion because we get to bear witness to the fact that when many gather to honor what matters to them; be it their culture, history or whatever, magic happens. What I love about this day of revelry is how much fun and creativity goes into planning the parades and celebrations. The parades try to showcase the best of Ireland and the Irish immigrant population around the world. Interestingly, it is the immigrant population that originated the first parade in New York in 1762, and the event has grown beyond that first attempt to honor St Paddy and all things Irish. To help us enjoy and survive Saint Patrick’s Day,  I have added popular Irish sayings in block quotes above/below each paragraph.  I have also added, below each paragraph, insightful facts about this special day. Take a moment to read them.

1. St. Patrick wasn’t Irish
2. He was born in Great Britain and his real name was Maewyn Succat NOT Patrick
3. St. Patrick’s color is blue, and that green hat on your head and on other body parts are our own green-eyed monster inventions; they were probably created for fun
4. It is NOT “St. Patty’s Day!” Please call him St. Patrick or St. Paddy… after all, the last time we checked, Patty was/is/always will be female.
5. St. Patrick’s Day as we know it was invented in the United States of America.
6. St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually first held in New York in 1762, and the Irish in Ireland joined in many years later.
7. March 17th is the day St. Patrick died. So why all the hoopla? Saints are honored on their birthdays.

There are so many popular myths attributed to St Patrick that I couldn’t list all of them if I tried.  The good thing about them is that they have become traditions that so many celebrate. Since they’re harmless, many people around the world participate in the festivities.  One popular myth that I love sharing is a quote by Patricia Lynch: “If you hold a four-leaf shamrock in your left hand at dawn on St. Patrick’s Day you get what you want very much but haven’t wished for.”  The more I think about it, the more the truth shared is revealed. I have to add that I love all things Irish.

8. St. Patrick didn’t drive all the snakes from Ireland; it’s a popular myth.
9. The harp is the symbol of Ireland not the green shamrock. Did you knew that one?
10. The idea that shamrocks and clover were his symbols? Malarkey! They are NOT. Did you know the four leaf clover stands for something? The first leaf is hope, the second is faith, the third is love and the fourth is luck.
11. St. Patrick’s Day used to be a teetotaler aka alcohol dry holiday in Ireland because the Catholic Church wanted it to be so. We should ask the Pope why it all changed.
12. Corned beef and cabbage isn’t a traditional Irish dish. Eat it anyway.
13. Did you know that there are more Irish people living in the U.S. than in Ireland? Ireland has about 4.2. million people and counting.
14. In contrast, we have about 34 million people of Irish descent living in America.

16. Many St. Patrick’s Day “traditions” have nothing to do with Ireland or Irish culture; officially these invented traditions are known as faux Irish!
17. Female Leprechauns! Oh Female Leprechauns! They don’t exist.
18. “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” was written by a bunch of New York songwriters
19. Green Beer isn’t as Irish as many believe. It is just another entertaining invention.
20. The pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow ain’t coming to a street near you any day soon. (If, by chance, one did happen to find a mystical pot at the end of a rainbow this St. Patrick’s Day, and it contained 1,000 gold coins weighing one ounce each, WalletHub estimated the total current worth at $1.26 million).     We don’t observe this holiday but we sometimes do. I like that it’s green and it’s mostly associates with clover leaf. I think Ireland is where it originated.

        Why all that Green on St Patrick’s Day? According to some legends, wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day prevents you from getting pinched by a leprechaun. In Irish folklore, wearing green makes you invisible to Leprechauns.Plus it is color of fecundity … growth in nature.:)

      It is correct to say St Patrick and/or St Paddy Day. The mistake is when people call it St Patty. Patty is NOT the short version of Patrick. It’s a girl’s name.

    I found a four leaf clover once too when I was a child and kept it with me for some time, until it dried. My boyfriend is half irish so we will definitely celebrate this coming sunday.

    I am full blown Irish Canadian myself, married to a lovely Irish Canadian girl. And yes, you are correct. St. Patrick’s is more of a North American thing. You’ll barely find any notice of it on the Emerald Isle itself.

    Admittedly I had no idea that most of these myths were just that–myths! The most puzzling one though is the fact that there are no female leprechauns. I wonder how the male leprechauns came to be if they didn’t have mothers.

    This is a great discovery, “St. Patrick’s color is blue, and that green hat on your head and on other body parts are our own green-eyed monster inventions; they were probably created for fun.” Amazing how some traditions and celebrations were altered through the years and make things totally different.

    I know I have spend my time trying to find a four leaf clover. It’s never very easy to find. But I do believe I have found one or two throughout my life. So much to learn about St. Patrick here and things which aren’t true as well.
