The Pig (豬) is the twelfth of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. In the continuous sexagenary cycle of sixty years, every twelfth year corresponds to hai, 亥 (the twelfth of the twelve Earthly Branches); this re-recurring twelfth year is commonly called the Year of the Pig 豬. There are five types of Pigs, named after the Chinese elements. In order, they are: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. These correspond to the Heavenly Stems. Thus, there are five pig years in every sexegenary cycle. For example, in the year 2019, the Earthly Branch is the twelfth, hài, and the Heavenly Stem is the sixth, jǐ 己. The Chinese New Year in 2019 is February fifth: this corresponds with the beginning of both the sexegenary year of jǐ hài and also the zodiac year of the Earth Pig. Wikipedia
Kung Hei Fat Choi! Happy New Year of the Pig! Gōng Xǐ Fā Cái. Gōng hè xīn xǐ! Happy New Year: 新年快乐 xīn nián kuài lè! Happy Chinese Lunar New Year to everyone! If you were born in 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031 … and every twelve years thereafter, this is your year. The year of the Pig, which is an Earth Pig year, will begin on February 5th 2019 and end on January 24th 2020. If you know any pig year folks, you know they are kind and compassionate, and would give you the shirt off their backs. They get along with other pigs, Tigers, Rabbits and Goats and can’t stand your proverbial snakes, oxen, and monkeys.
Ironically, according to ancient Chinese superstitious beliefs, your Chinese Zodiac year is called Ben Ming Nian, and while it may be the year to celebrate your zodiac animal, it can also be the year of bad luck or mediocre luck for the designated animal. Go figure. If you were born in any of the years listed above, it behooves you to practice caution, compassion and wisdom this year. If you’re motivated, and you should be, there are lots of ways you can contain or curtail the ancient, angry gods who want to teach you a lesson. Keep reading below.
Apparently, in the olden days, an ancient god called Tai Sui/god of Age was offended by the animals of the zodiac during their stint on the twelve year cycle. So, whenever their year arrives, the god asserts his revenge with mischief and misfortune. You can avoid said bad luck and bring good luck into your year by doing the following things: Wear red clothing, accessories and shoes. If you want red underwear which is highly recommended, others MUST buy them for you. You can accept red gifts from loved ones, jade accessories, change your direction and be more observant of your surroundings. Honor the good around you and keep your chain of communication open and clear. This year, Tai Sui is facing northwest so, make sure to change your direction and adjust your personal effects to face southeast to maximize your good luck.

More On Year Of The Pig: Two Pigs can get along well with each other and ( with Rabbits and goats). It is said that the relationship between these three archetypes, (pigs, rabbits and goats), work best as they strive for aestheticism, beauty, and a more philosophical, and intellectual approach in life. Their calm nature gives them great leadership abilities.
They are artistic, refined, intuitive, intelligent, and well-mannered. These souls love the preliminaries in love, and are fine artists in their lovemaking. The Rabbit, Goat, and Pig have been bestowed with calmer natures than the other nine signs.
These three are compassionately aware, yet detached and resigned to their condition. They seek beauty and a sensitive love. Other Elements of the Year of the Pig: This year, we honor the Earth Pig who represents the element of water. This pig is a Yin, and has the 10th month as its lunar month. Its lucky numbers are 2, 5, 6, 8; lucky flower is the lily, lucky color is yellow and it lives free in the winter. In case you are wondering how I got into celebrating and investigating the rich cultural history around this special holiday, I was introduced to it in high school in England; one of my roommates in the 6th form was from Mainland China and she celebrated it with other Asian students. The term we shared a dorm room, she invited me to join in and I loved it. I was so taken by the special treats, and the red envelopes that they used to exchange money with each other, that I held on to the memory for years. When I moved to the US and found out that it was celebrated here with gusto, I was sold. As I write this post, I have a huge and beautifully packed Chinese New Year gift package on my Buffet Table. I love this holiday because it’s an opportunity to start over the New Year with a review of what has occurred to date, and a commitment to move forward in a new direction. Do you celebrate it?

The Mythology of The Chinese New Year
According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian (Chinese: 年; pinyin: Nián). Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came to the village again. The Nian was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nian became Hongjun Laozu’s mount. Chinese New Year Wikipedia
Chinese New Year’s Day Tips & Taboos: If you want to have a prosperous year, there are a number of tips and taboos you need to remember as these are to be avoided on the first day of the Chinese New Year: Of course, some of these taboos are hundreds of years old and may no longer be applicable or even enforceable. Read and digest them with a grain of salt…
Medicine: Taking medicine on the first day of the lunar year means one will get ill for a whole year.
Laundry: People do not wash clothes on the first and second day, because these two days are celebrated as the birthday of Shuishen (水神, the Water God).
Washing hair: Hair must not be washed on the first day of the lunar year.
Sharp objects: The use of knives and scissors is to be avoided as any accident is thought to lead to inauspicious things and the depletion of wealth.
Going out: A woman may not leave her house; otherwise she will be plagued with bad luck for the entire coming year.
The broom: If you sweep on this day then your wealth will be swept away too.
Crying children: The cry of a child is believed to bring bad luck to the family, so parents do their best to keep children as happy as possible.
Theft: Having your pocket picked is believed to portend your whole wealth in the coming year being stolen.
Debt: Money should not be lent on New Year’s Day, and all debts have to be paid by New Year’s Eve.
Empty rice jar: A depleted receptacle may cause grave anxiety
Damaged clothes: Wearing threadbare duds can cause more bad luck for the year.
Killing things: Blood is considered an ill omen, which will cause misfortunes such as a knife wound, or a bloody disaster.
Monochrome fashion: White or black clothes are barred as these two colours are traditionally associated with mourning.
Welcoming the New Year: According to tradition, people must stay up late on New Year’s Eve to welcome the New Year, and then to let off firecrackers and fireworks to scare off inauspicious spirits and Nian, the New Year monster.

Good to know that the year of “your” animal can bring bad luck as well… I always just assumed it was supposed to be the best year ever! I’m a tiger and I think I met my ex boyfriend in the year of the tiger?? I thought that was good luck then but turned out it was bad luck haha 😉

I never heard of that tradition before, that wearing everything that’s colored red and it’s funny how you should wear a red panty but others should buy it for you.
Do you ever wonder if some traditions were created with ulterior motives? Like women can’t leave the house all day – was it so the men could out without their wives? lol, maybe not but who knows. I think those kinds of traditions appear worldwide. ANYWAY, I did NOT know that this was the last in the 12 year cycle! Seems fitting that most resolutions and goals I’ve seen people setting this year were about finishing things they started…

Lunar New Year is probably one of the most beautiful holiday. The red and gold is right up my alley. I never knew all of the superstitions that go along with it. That’s super interesting.

Chinese New Year was always fun for me, but I didn’t know about the various things that shouldn’t be done and how it affects the upcoming year, sure some of them are a bit going overboard, but a few are well placed, especially the red clothing ones 😀
My sister just sent me a message about this yesterday. I was born in the year of the pig so she said 2019 is going to be a good year for me. So far, it’s been pretty amazing 🙂

Oh this reminds me of the good old days when I used to teach. My students and I would take a field trip to China Town and watch the most beautiful celebrations, make Chinese lanterns and meet students from other schools in China town.

This was really interesting, I’ve never spent much time learning about Chinese New Years but I’ve always thought the different animals associated with each year was really interesting.
In graduate school, I lived in a residence with people of all ethnicities and got to celebrate Chinese New Year with some students who were from China. I loved learning about the holiday from them and getting to experience something new!
I love the mythology and the lore behind the Chinese New Year, is always nice to read about it. I guess I should not panic much because I washed my hair that day :)))

Yes! Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays and Welcoming the year of the Pig!
So this is why everyone is wearing red to celebrate the lunar new year. I was lucky to be in Vietnam just before the lunar new year and I was amazed by how they were preparing for the celebrations.
I always learn new thing every day, am not a Chinese but I already know about some of their tradition.

Happy Chinese New Year. I have enjoyed reading about this on your post and other posts I have seen. My aunt was born 1971 so this is her year! I will pass this on to her so she can learn more about the year of the pig. My kids also learned about the Chinese new year in school. I am glad they are teaching the importance of learning about other cultures in school.

In my astrological chart, I have the elements of earth, wind and fire, but no water. That is why I am really paying attention to this year of the pig, which has much to do with water. I know that this is an element that I must learn to embrace and add into my life for balance and I think this year is going to challenge people who are similar to me.
Chinese Lunar new year was and still is really interesting to me, especially the tips and taboos, I see a lot of it has to do with money and well being, and I mean that is true, and there is a lot of things to keep an eye on, like with giving gifts to other people, and what clothes you wear, this was really informative 😀

It’s so interesting to know some of these things. Going into different cultures it is good to study a bit before traveling so you know things like the mono chromatic coloring it’s a no no you can’t gift a clock. Of course you can’t know everything but a little research never hurts.
We have some family members that are year of the Pig. It is interesting to read about the different signs in the lunar new year.
