Motivation Mondays: Power of Gratitude

Motivation Mondays: Power of Gratitude

Motivation Mondays: Power of Gratitude

How Often Do You Express GRATITUDE? It’s easy to be grateful when things are going swimmingly well but, what do we do when we feel stressed out or trapped by life’s demands? What do we do when we suddenly find ourselves at a loss to say what we think or even how we feel about events around us? And what about when we’ve tried to handle a situation and it persists, and we try another approach and it lingers? At some point, we have to surrender our need to have all our pegs fit nicely in their square holes. We have to stop, catch our breath, and change directions, albeit for a short while. What is this all about? Well, I was wondering when you’d ask. I started the new year on solid ground. I’d made a clear decision to focus on a number of offline projects and channel a bit more into my online work. All was coming along nicely until I hit a wall over the weekend. No, it was an imaginary not a physical wall.  Everything stopped. I had to rethink my projects and I was feeling very frustrated.

An Æsop Story: The Hares & the Frogs
Hares, as you know, are very timid. The least shadow, sends them scurrying in fright to a hiding place. Once they decided to die rather than live in such misery. But while they were debating how best to meet death, they thought they heard a noise and in a flash were scampering off to the warren. On the way they passed a pond where a family of Frogs was sitting among the reeds on the bank. In an instant the startled Frogs were seeking safety in the mud.
“Look,” cried a Hare, “things are not so bad after all, for here are creatures who are even afraid of us!” Via read.gov
Moral: However unfortunate we may think we are there is always someone worse off than ourselves.

“When you meet obstacles with gratitude, your perception starts to shift, resistance loses its power, and grace finds a home within you.” Oprah

What About Gratitude Fits Here? A couple of projects I was working on had stalled and I was frustrated. One stalled because of market conditions and the other because of human ineptitude. I spent the rest of the weekend trying to salvage things and it was only late on Monday that a light-bulb glowed above my head with GRATITUDE scrawled all over it. No,my situation hadn’t turned around. Things were still under advisement and a tad chaotic. I was feeling the stress and in a moment of sheer exasperation, that message lit up my brain like neon lights. I was being reminded to focus on gratitude! Hence, the topic of this post. Whenever we think the grass across the pike is greener, it’s a sign for us to hit that pause button and reevaluate our circumstances. Are we sure it’s greener and how can we improve on own condition where we are? It can’t hurt to consider the worst case scenario and then adjust our thinking from complaint mode to gratitude mode. Yes, the idiomatic expression I amended above is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole … but that was not the point I was trying to make.

An Æsop Story: The Town Mouse & the Country Mouse
A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country. For lunch the Country Mouse served wheat stalks, roots, and acorns, with a dash of cold water for drink. The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that, and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite.

After the meal the friends had a long talk, or rather the Town Mouse talked about her life in the city while the Country Mouse listened. They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning. In her sleep the Country Mouse dreamed she was a Town Mouse with all the luxuries and delights of city life that her friend had described for her. So the next day when the Town Mouse asked the Country Mouse to go home with her to the city, she gladly said yes.

When they reached the mansion in which the Town Mouse lived, they found on the table in the dining room the leavings of a very fine banquet. There were sweetmeats and jellies, pastries, delicious cheeses, indeed, the most tempting foods that a Mouse can imagine. But just as the Country Mouse was about to nibble a dainty bit of pastry, she heard a Cat mew loudly and scratch at the door. In great fear the Mice scurried to a hiding place, where they lay quite still for a long time, hardly daring to breathe. When at last they ventured back to the feast, the door opened suddenly and in came the servants to clear the table, followed by the House Dog.
The Country Mouse stopped in the Town Mouse’s den only long enough to pick up her carpet bag and umbrella.

“You may have luxuries and dainties that I have not,” she said as she hurried away, “but I prefer my plain food and simple life in the country with the peace and security that go with it.”
Moral: Poverty with security is better than plenty in the midst of fear and uncertainty. Via read.gov

How Gratitude Pulls us Off the Edge: I started this post about a few projects that went south. Even though I didn’t mention specifics, the thrust of my post was to remind us all that a spirit of gratitude can help us adjust to situations and find alternative ways to accomplish our goals. It is so easy to get stuck in a quagmire and bitch and moan about thisnthat but that isn’t productive.  If we take one small step away from our pity party and focus on the lessons learned, a doorway will find its way to us, encouraging us to start our journey all over again with a keener wisdom. Of course, all of this doesn’t happen overnight or in a vacuum but, if we stay open to the possibility of magical moments around us, we too might find our equivalent of a Prince Charming.  My frustration and attempts to see the light led me back to some of my favorite Æsop Stories, and I’ve shared a few of these classic and wisdom-filled stories with you. What have you learned this month? Where will it lead you? Do share.

An Æsop Story: The Fox & the Crab
A Crab one day grew disgusted with the sands in which he lived. He decided to take a stroll to the meadow not far inland. There he would find better fare than briny water and sand mites. So off he crawled to the meadow. But there a hungry Fox spied him, and in a twinkling, ate him up, both shell and claw.
Moral: Be content with your lot.

Gratitude can make a big difference for both the person expressing it and the person receiving it, some people put a lot of time and energy into helping others or just being generally kind and whey they don’t get any gratitude in return it can make that person a bit grouchy after a while.

I really think that gratitude is the single, most important practice that has everything to do with one’s state of mind. It requires the constant mindful being – yet it repays instantly. I’m not sure I liked the hares and the frogs tale though – I don’t think that uplifting ourselves using someone else’s suffering is a beneficial practice. Wouldn’t you agree?

    • Eliz@MirthandMotivation permalink*
      16/01/2019 10:04 am

The point of the story was to teach that we all have our own suffering to contend with and the story was a reminder to appreciate what we have not a comparison at all of degrees of suffering. Does that help clarify the moral of the story for you?

I always try to be grateful. Sometimes when I become jealous of what others have (or start comparing), I forget the things that i have. Hubby always reminds me to be grateful and be content. I remember ranting to him that this person went to this place, and I haven’t been there. And he would tell me “so the 40+ countries you’ve visited is not enough?” Sometimes I am so quick to point out the things that I don’t have, and forget just how blessed I am. Really and truly there is nothing for me to complain about with all the blessings coming upon us.

The power of gratitude. It can turn a bad day into a good one. Yes, this is so true, I was feeling so down and sad these past few months and to start with, I am one positive person. I guess we all have our down days. But as I pause and ponder, I realize, I still am lucky so thank you world, thank you universe and thank you people. I also would want to thank you MirthandMotivation for constantly inspiring and motivating people – thanks!

This is an excellent post. Sometimes it’s hard to feel gratitude for all that we have bit usually it’s exactly what we need at the time.

Gratitude is one of the biggest favors we can do to ourselves. I make a conscious effort to do so. Love your perspective on not so good times.

Gratitude is such an important part of everyday life. Although it can be hard to feel gracious everyday, it helps to at least try! I know I need to work on this a bit more. Thanks for sharing!

Gratitude is so important!!! The more thankful you are for the current things in your life, the more things you will be thankful for in the future

I find that allowing yourself to feel gratitude is the best way to allow more wonderful things into your life. Turning a blind eye to the good things already coming your way prevents you from finding true happiness in things that arrive for you in the future.

Gratitude is something that I am trying to work on everyday. I struggle and then remind myself to be grateful for the fact alone that I am alive and breathing.

That’s so true, no matter how bad we have it there is always someone worse off. We need to appreciate what we have more.

Everyday I feel grateful. Even my situation isn’t good, or I feel like I’m in a mud, I am still thankful, and find gratitude to all the things and experiences I had, because I am alive. Life is beautiful, and I’m truly grateful for that.
