Motivation Monday: Make Peace with Pain

Miguel – Come Through and Chill (Official Video) ft. J. Cole, Salaam Remi

MY WISH FOR YOU…
– Where there is pain, I wish you peace and mercy.
– Where there is self-doubting, I wish you a renewed confidence in your ability to work through it.
– Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, I wish you understanding, patience, and renewed strength.
– Where there is fear, I wish you love, and courage. Unknown
There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life. There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine. O traveler, if you are in search of that, don’t look outside, look inside yourself and seek that. … We are the mirror as well as the face in it. We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity. We are pain and what cures pain both. Rumi

What causes you much pain? Have you tried to make peace with the pain? While some measure pain in degrees, I believe pain is pain… We experience it for different reasons and some of us are adept at finding ways to heal and move on, while others can’t seem to push past the grief and the pain. Sadly, when we don’t let go of our pain, when we are parked in pain, it festers and creates rage, restlessness and eventually illness. Pain can be used in a productive way if we commit to shifting the negative energy into work that helps us heal. It is important for us to take the initiative and follow the path to healing. Instead of parking our memories in painful episodes, we need to find peace in our pain and process it by taking actions that will propel us forward into a healthier space where we can begin to heal. Un-park and unpack the pain.  Look at it squarely through an unfiltered lens. Process the pain with care and make peace with the pain. Surrender its stronghold on your emotions. You can do this.

Pain – Poem by Khalil Gibran

And a woman spoke, saying, ‘Tell us of Pain.’
And he said:
Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.

“Every need brings what’s needed. Pain bears its cure like a child. Having nothing produces provisions. Ask a difficult question, and the marvelous answer appears.” Rumi

Whatever happens to you, don’t fall in despair. Even if all the doors are closed, a secret path will be there for you that no one knows. You can’t see it yet but so many paradises are at the end of this path… Be grateful! It is easy to thank after obtaining what you want, thank before having what you want. Rumi
Peaceful is the one who’s not concerned with having more or less. Unbound by name and fame, he is free from sorrow from the world and mostly from himself. Rumi
Don’t worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come? Rumi

What can we do to help the healing process? For starters, so many of us allow our painful memories to become crutches we carry around with us. Get rid of the crutches. Stop leaning on the pain for strength , turn your attention to the good in your life and other choices that can motivate you to heal. Turn within, offer the pain to the source of all and reflect on the things that give you joy. Have faith in your growth and take even small steps daily. Trust the Creator and the bountiful opportunities for healing that manifest once you start saying YES. Shift gears in a focused and positive way by moving forward with your life and doing the inner work to help you find your footing again. When we make new promises to ourselves, we don’t stay parked in the graveyard of old hurts. We take faithful steps and action and we trust that each new day will bring comfort that takes the edge off. If you’ve ever lived with debilitating pain, you’d understand the relief that comes from taking even the edge off. Go to that place and stay awhile… You are welcome there.

Peace Xviii – Poem by Khalil Gibran

The tempest calmed after bending the branches of the trees and leaning heavily upon the grain in the field. The stars appeared as broken remnants of lightning, but now silence prevailed over all, as if Nature’s war had never been fought.

At that hour a young woman entered her chamber and knelt by her bed sobbing bitterly. Her heart flamed with agony but she could finally open her lips and say, “Oh Lord, bring him home safely to me. I have exhausted my tears and can offer no more, oh Lord, full of love and mercy. My patience is drained and calamity is seeking possession of my heart. Save him, oh Lord, from the iron paws of War; deliver him from such unmerciful Death, for he is weak, governed by the strong. Oh Lord, save my beloved, who is Thine own son, from the foe, who is Thy foe. Keep him from the forced pathway to Death’s door; let him see me, or come and take me to him.”

Quietly a young man entered. His head was wrapped in bandage soaked with escaping life.

He approached he with a greeting of tears and laughter, then took her hand and placed against it his flaming lips. And with a voice with bespoke past sorrow, and joy of union, and uncertainty of her reaction, he said, “Fear me not, for I am the object of your plea. Be glad, for Peace has carried me back safely to you, and humanity has restored what greed essayed to take from us. Be not sad, but smile, my beloved. Do not express bewilderment, for Love has power that dispels Death; charm that conquers the enemy. I am your one. Think me not a specter emerging from the House of Death to visit your Home of Beauty.

“Do not be frightened, for I am now Truth, spared from swords and fire to reveal to the people the triumph of Love over War. I am Word uttering introduction to the play of happiness and peace.”

Then the young man became speechless and his tears spoke the language of the heart; and the angels of Joy hovered about that dwelling, and the two hearts restored the singleness which had been taken from them.

At dawn the two stood in the middle of the field contemplating the beauty of Nature injured by the tempest. After a deep and comforting silence, the soldier said to his sweetheart, “Look at the Darkness, giving birth to the Sun.”

Motivation Monday: Make Peace with Pain

Run from what’s comfortable. Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious. I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now on I’ll be mad. Rumi
Take someone who doesn’t keep score, who’s not looking to be richer, or afraid of losing, who has not the slightest interest even in his own personality: he’s free. Rumi
Don’t be sad! Because God sends hope in the most desperate moments. Don’t forget, the heaviest rain comes out of the darkest clouds. Rumi
You suppose you are the trouble, but you are the cure. You suppose that you are the lock on the door, but you are the key that opens it. Rumi

Why is letting go important to healing our pain? Khalil Gibran and Rumi are two ecstatic and visionary poets who speak about the human condition in ways that resonate deeply in my spirit. They use poetry and prose as prayer, and touch those innermost places that we sometimes hide from ourselves. Pain is a powerful motivator and if used with compassion and a spirit of forgiveness and surrender, it can bring tremendous healing to both the individual and the community. Some of us live with constant physical pain from accidents or old emotional wounds, we can soften the edges through gentle self-care and reflection.  Be patient and careful to weigh the length of time you have suffered and know that healing is a process and the promise you make to yourself to break through the boundaries of pain will bear fruit for you. There is an internal gauge and a witness to that gauge who prompts us on and supports our efforts on this planet. You have it, I have it, and we all do … some call it agape = Love. Tap into that space of sacredness, let go of old wounds, and begin the rebirth of your beautiful self.  As Rumi suggests, “Something opens our wings. Something makes boredom and hurt disappear. Someone fills the cup in front of us: We taste only sacredness.”

Peace Contagious Khalil Gibran

One branch in bloom said to his neighbouring branch, “This is a dull and empty day.” And the other branch answered, “It is indeed empty and dull.” At that moment a sparrow alighted on one of the branches, and the another sparrow, nearby.

And one of the sparrows chirped and said, “My mate has left me.”

And the other sparrow cried, “My mate has also gone, and she will not return. And what care I?

Then the two birds began to twitter and scold, and soon they were fighting and making harsh noise upon the air. All of a sudden two other sparrows came sailing from the sky, and they sat quietly beside the restless two. And there was calm, and there was peace.

Then the four flew away together in pairs.

And the first branch said to his neighbouring branch, “That was a mighty zig-zag of sound.”

And the other branch answered, “Call it what you will, it is now both peaceful and spacious. And if the upper air makes peace it seems to me that those who dwell in the lower might make peace also. Will you not wave in the wind a little nearer to me?”

And the first branch said, “Oh, perchance, for peace’ sake, ere the Spring is over.”

And then he waved himself with the strong wind to embrace her.

Prayer Xxiii – Poem by Khalil Gibran

Then a priestess said, “Speak to us of Prayer.”

And he answered, saying:

You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.

For what is prayer but the expansion of yourself into the living ether?

And if it is for your comfort to pour your darkness into space, it is also for your delight to pour forth the dawning of your heart.

And if you cannot but weep when your soul summons you to prayer, she should spur you again and yet again, though weeping, until you shall come laughing.

When you pray you rise to meet in the air those who are praying at that very hour, and whom save in prayer you may not meet.

Therefore let your visit to that temple invisible be for naught but ecstasy and sweet communion.

For if you should enter the temple for no other purpose than asking you shall not receive.

And if you should enter into it to humble yourself you shall not be lifted:

Or even if you should enter into it to beg for the good of others you shall not be heard.

It is enough that you enter the temple invisible.

I cannot teach you how to pray in words.

God listens not to your words save when He Himself utters them through your lips.

And I cannot teach you the prayer of the seas and the forests and the mountains.

But you who are born of the mountains and the forests and the seas can find their prayer in your heart,

And if you but listen in the stillness of the night you shall hear them saying in silence,

“Our God, who art our winged self, it is thy will in us that willeth.

It is thy desire in us that desireth.

It is thy urge in us that would turn our nights, which are thine, into days which are thine also.

We cannot ask thee for aught, for thou knowest our needs before they are born in us:

Thou art our need; and in giving us more of thyself thou givest us all.”

I love your healing process, get rid of the crutches and stop leaning on the pain and rather focus what is good to our life. Sometimes pain can make us grow, just like a workout training, after the training, we feel pain in our muscle but that is actually good thing happen as our muscle as it will grow to become stronger.

Thought provoking. It is sometimes necessary to just live with pain – physical, mental, emotional – realizing that it is just part of who we are, part of our story, and perhaps even part of what builds character in us. Doesn’t mean it’s fun or easy, but sometimes it is what it is.

we’ve all experienced pain and i’ve had my own fair share when i was in my teens. i was betrayed by the person i loved most at that time and it was hard. it took me years to finally have peace and forgive. bad memories might not be forgotten, but the lessons we learn from them will truly help us later in life. I might not be the same person i am now have i not experienced pain before. pain only makes us stronger and when we learn to accept and make peace with pain, they we could truly and genuinely be happy.

I truly believe you have to make peace with pain. If you don’t, it will ruin all of your relationships. I was having a discussion with coworkers today about this. We all experience pain and most of it starts as a child. We must move on from it in order to have productive lives. God says casts your cares upon Him for He cares for us. If we do this, He can heal all of the pain.

This reminds me of something I heard from a preacher once, who was speaking on grief. It’s important in times of pain to ‘run toward the roar’. Lions hunt in such a way that the male lion will sometimes let out a loud roar to frighten prey, and send them running right toward the waiting lioness hunters. It’s important to face your pain at some point rather than letting it defeat you.

Seeing pain as the enemy is self-defeating proposition. Our pain system is the first line of defence against danger and damage from our environment. As you’ll learn later, ending the fight is the first step toward making a lasting peace. Many people see pain as the enemy when, in fact, it is really a friend. Pain tells us something is wrong and needs our attention.

This is something new. Last month had been the most excruciating time for me in terms of pain. For three days, I couldn’t get up because of my back pain. I resented it, honestly. But yeah, I guess you are right. make peace with it.

I think everyone deals with pain in their own different way. But you’re right, making peace with it, and accepting it, goes a long, long way in helping us deal with it. And moving on.

2018 has been one of the most difficult I’ve ever faced, in so many ways. But through it all, I kept remembering seasons that were just as painful. In every case, I look back and think .. Because of what I went through, my life took on a whole new trajectory, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s what kept me going. I have no idea what this new season will bring, but I’m welcoming it the only way I know how. Day by day. xx

Like you said, unpacking the pain is so crucial to moving forward. By acknowledging what’s there, learning from it to the best of our abilities, and coming to terms with what it is, we can begin to heal ourselves.

Healing from pain and hurt is very important. I have so many friends who have gone through tragedy this year, the healing process can be very slow.

Pain can definitely evolve, it is like the stages of grief – I can definitely tell that it goes through stages. We need to work through it so that we can move on in our lives.

Whilst physical pain is not hard to keep under control, especially with the modern medicine, sadly we can’t say the same about the pain in our souls. We all have baggage, we all have passed through things that hurt us so much that we thought we can’t move on. It’s important to make peace with this kind of pain, otherwise it will haunt us and affect negatively the rest of our lives.

As usual, what a wonderful and thoughtful article! By far my favorite perspective on pain is that it’s just information being given to us either by our body or mind.

Sometimes it’s hard to let go of the past even if it’s caused you pain:( nature and time heals everything! I’m finally over it:)
