Motivation Mondays: Take a Chance

Motivation Mondays: Take a Chance

Take a Chance: Years ago, when I took a chance on love and moved to the US, I was so lonely and miserable that I kept vowing to pack it all in and move back to the UK. I had left family and friends back home to start life in a somewhat hostile environment as a foreign student and a zero. The love died on arrival; he forgot to tell me he was in a serious relationship. I braced myself and turned my attention to my studies. I had left the safety net of my closest family and friends to take a chance on starting a new life in another country. Even with phone calls home, there were lots of things reminding me that I was alone; simple things like seeing families shopping together and gathering groceries in the supermarket.

Whenever I left my college classrooms and headed home to my first apartment in a high-rise building, the gaps of silence were deafening. I nudged myself to reach out and make new friends but my efforts felt forced and stilted. Here I was, the outspoken, happy go lucky, fashionista and party animal who suddenly found herself out of her element in a new country. Things that made sense on TV about this great country, didn’t have the same impact in reality as they now seemed excessive. There were drive-throughs and fast food joints everywhere. There were huge cars, huge food markets, and endless highways that seemed to fall into the unknown. The daily challenges left me feeling raw, used, and very vulnerable.

Why take a Chance?: Every day was my last day in the US and I even bought a plane ticket… but something stopped me. Each time I came close to throwing in the towel, I would remember how much my dad disliked the idea of my moving to the US alone, and how much I promised him that I wouldn’t fail or disgrace his good name. Yes, it’s a typical immigrant story; even for those of us who came here legally. My promise is what kept me here and that is what keeps me going in the face of a lifetime of struggles. We take a chance for change and we make subsequent choices to propel us forward into the unknown.  It is scary but worth the effort because such shifts in our comfort zone help us grow.

How do our chances/choices show up in our lives? If you are friends with me on Facebook, you’d know that I don’t have thousands of friends … most of the ones I have are childhood friends, co workers, former students and/or staff. I am a loyal friend and I don’t take my friendships lightly. I can be abrupt but, I don’t enjoy seeing people hurting. I love a good laugh and I dislike petty or harsh people. I manage several Facebook groups and the draconian approach is not my thing. Why create a support group and then treat your members like criminals or prisoners? My approach is that the majority want to do the right thing but life demands get in the way. We give them chances to correct problems and only if the issue persists do we remove people from the groups. We all drop the ball sometimes and a repeat offender needs retraining or time out not expulsion. I believe in taking a chance on people and creating lasting friendships because they matter.

Take A Chance – Poem by Ronald Chapman
You and I crossed paths,
For the first time in my dreams.

I’ve waited so very long,
To cross an endless ocean of time.

Rising into the sky
Above the walls of impossibility,
Not knowing if you truly exist.

No longer feeling alone.

I take a chance,
This fantasy becomes a beautiful story,
My dreams become real.

I look for you,
Waiting for me,
Standing, in the gardens of reality.

It is important to take chances in life and while it may seem daunting at first, at times, in the end it is worth it. The chances we take in life and how we react to them help define us. Thank you for sharing part of your story as I am sure you gained a lot by taking a leap of faith.

Sometimes taking a chance is good…other times it’s not. I got the sense from reading your post, that you are still unsure about the chance you took to move to the US :(. I’ve taken chances before in my life, that ended up not being the best decision for me in the end. Props to you though, for moving to a new country. That is something I could never do. The loneliness and separation from my friends and family would be too much I think.

I so can relate to the story here. I was only 15 when I left my home country, to study and live completely alone. To say that it was hard is to say nothing, but I just couldn’t go back to my home town- that would have been interpreted as failure.
10 years later, I am were I want to be, and all those sacrifices make sense now. I took the chance.

I can relate to the theme of taking a chance. I did this when I pursued love for the third time, after my first abusive marriage ended in just a few months, and my second marriage of nearly 20 years ended when he declared one day that he didn’t love me any more and in fact, never did. Third time was the charm, though, as I found the love my life at an online dating site in 2002; we married in 2006; and we’re still very much in love and happy together.

I am so happy you stayed, because i follow your blog and you’re Motivation Mondays. I LOVE them. I believe that’s come from that young girl who moved to this country many years ago.
