Motivation Mondays: Valuable Time of Maturity
Recently, one of my sisters shared a poem with me that stopped me in my tracks. The famous poem by Mário de Andrade is known by two titles; The Valuable Time of Maturity and My Soul Has a Hat, and its message will move you to evaluate your life, your time, and how/with whom you spend it. Even though both titles offer slight variations to the poem’s translation, they are essentially the same. Mario de Andrade (San Paolo 1893-1945) was a founding member of the Brazilian modernism movement, and a highly regarded Poet, novelist, essayist and musicologist. His poem reminds us of the ephemeral nature of time and how important it is to dispense with niceties and remove ourselves from unproductive situations. Andrade tackles a topic that many of us would prefer to avoid because it reminds us of our mortality. Whether we like it or not, in the recesses of our minds, we do wonder; when/what/how? By the same token, some version of this question arises often: if you had just a little time left to be on this planet, what would you discard and what would you hold up to the light? ” I counted my years and discovered that I have
less time to live going forward than I have lived until now.
I have more past than future.
I feel like the boy who received a bowl of candies.
The first ones, he ate ungracious,
but when he realized there were only a few left,
he began to taste them deeply.The Valuable Time of Maturity
I do not have time to deal with mediocrity.
I do not want to be in meetings where parade inflamed egos.
I am bothered by the envious, who seek to discredit
the most able, to usurp their places,
coveting their seats, talent, achievements and luck.
I do not have time for endless conversations,
useless to discuss about the lives of others
who are not part of mine.
I do not have time to manage sensitivities of people
who despite their chronological age, are immature.
I cannot stand the result that generates
from those struggling for power.
People do not discuss content, only the labels.
My time has become scarce to discuss labels,
I want the essence, my soul is in a hurry…

Who would you choose to spend your time with if it was the last day you spent on earth? Okay, it might be seen as a morbid question but it is a necessary one to ask ourselves. As we traverse this game we call life, being purposeful is not only wise, it helps guide the direction of our whole footprint. Who do we bring along on our journey? Who will serve as trusted guides? We have more control over certain outcomes. Carpe diem.

I want to live close to human people,
very human, who laugh of their own stumbles,
and away from those turned smug and overconfident
with their triumphs,
away from those filled with self-importance,
Who does not run away from their responsibilities ..
Who defends human dignity.
And who only want to walk on the side of truth
and honesty.
The essential is what makes
life worthwhile.
I want to surround myself with people,
who know how to touch the hearts of people ….
People to whom the hard knocks of life,
taught them to grow with softness in their soul.
Yes …. I am in a hurry … to live with intensity,
that only maturity can bring.
I intend not to waste any part of the goodies
I have left …
I’m sure they will be more exquisite,
that most of which so far I’ve eaten.
My goal is to arrive to the end satisfied and in peace
with my loved ones and my conscience.
I hope that your goal is the same,
because either way you will get there too ..

I counted my years
& realized that I have
Less time to live by,
Than I have lived so far.
I feel like a child who won a pack of candies: at first he ate them with pleasure,
But when he realized that there was little left, he began to taste them intensely.
I have no time for endless meetings where the statutes, rules, procedures & internal regulations are discussed,
knowing that nothing will be done.
I no longer have the patience
To stand absurd people who,
despite their chronological age,
have not grown up.
My time is too short:
I want the essence,
my spirit is in a hurry.
I do not have much candy
In the package anymore.
I want to live next to humans,
very realistic people who know
How to laugh at their mistakes,
Who are not inflated by their own triumphs
& who take responsibility for their actions.
In this way, human dignity is defended
and we live in truth and honesty.
It is the essentials that make life useful.
I want to surround myself with people
who know how to touch the hearts of those whom hard strokes of life
have learned to grow, with sweet touches of the soul.
Yes, I’m in a hurry.
I’m in a hurry to live with the intensity that only maturity can give.
I do not intend to waste any of the remaining desserts.
I am sure they will be exquisite,
much more than those eaten so far.
My goal is to reach the end satisfied
and at peace with my loved ones and my conscience.

Maturity means different things to different people. I think we also have to factor in how public our lives have become with the advent of the Internet and Social Media. I do like this verse: It is the essentials that make life useful.

Wow! This is really a motivation post. Everybody has that perfect time of maturity in us to be value and keep intact.
Value of time is non debatable. But do I live it with valued moments of goodness that matters most. But I do endeavor.
It is indeed important to use our time smartly and not waste it on the negative and petty events. Similarly, it is important to choose a wise person to spend time with. I’ll definitely regret spending half of my life with someone foolish. We should be purposeful. Loved the poems and this is a wonderful post.
I concur… some mistakes are meant to give us life lessons.

I LOVE the first poem. I am saving it to for future. Such a gem. It makes so much sense. I would like to believe I am at a mid point of my life. If I live a decent life – then I should have as much future remaining as much past. I am going to make it count.

de Andrade’s poem is amazing and makes us understand how maturity is a gift (and is full of gifts) just like youth. The ability to appreciate and reflect about life belongs to adulthood, it will never be something you’ll have in youth and it’s right this way. it’s the greatest benefit time gives us.
“The Valuable Time of Maturity ” is the poem that touches me the most! I am exactly in that moment in my life, doing a balance and taking wiser decisions! I keep saying to my husband “entramos a salir” so when we hesitate on doing something or not I tell him “honey, we are dying…” and everything becomes SO CLEAR.
That’s just the weirdest thing. My Mom sent me My Soul Has a Hat about two weeks ago and it really touched me so much. Such incredible words to live by and ones you can only truly appreciate deeply when you reach a certain age.

Maturity is an attractive quality that many people lack these days. There are moments where being silly is completely acceptable, but maturity is definitely necessary for many situations in life.

This is such a nice post and if I have a little time in my life I will definitely use that in doing good things to others, spending time with my family and asking forgiveness to those I’ve hurt.
If I will have have a little time to stay here on Earth I will definitely spend my time serving my God will all of my faith and hearts. Of course, I will also spend time with my family, forgive to those who hurt me and ask forgiveness to those I’ve hurt.
Yes, I also want to surround myself with people who affect others in a positive way. Away with the negative. We can all do some good in our own little way.
If it was my last day on earth, there is not one person I will spend time with but many. I want to be surrounded by my great big family and close friends. I will hug my husband all day and give my son infinite kisses. It’s so true that being purposeful is wise. So many people go through life aimlessly thinking tomorrow is promise. We are given each day as a gift and we must make the day that we are in count.

I always love to value others time as well as they value my time. But if I do have a little time left for me I will do more good things and repent for the sins that I made.

The Mário de Andrade’s quote has such a deep meaning! And yes! I’d also pray to God to bless me so that when I’ll leave this world, I’d be surrounded with my family and the loved ones. That is a wonderful poem. I have surrounded myself with friends of all ages over the years, each one is so special. I have a lot of time for this one lady I met on the bus, we used to chat every day on our way to work, she is in her 70s now and I still bump into her every now and then, she is fab.

I would spend my last day on earth as if I a million more to go. For me life is not about the grand adventure but little things that make life worth living.

What a thoughtful poem. Good for all of us to be reminded that our days on Earth are limited, and we can choose to live and love well or be preoccupied with little things that don’t matter.
I woudl spend my time with my family and, the most important people in the world to me. As long as I had my husband, my children, and my parents, I would die surrounded by love and happiness.

Amazing poem. It had me furiously working out my age vs. average life expectancy. I think I’m hanging on to the future, but must be close to the half way point should my life go to plan. I completely agree with this. You do seem to value your time more when there is less of it. I’ve noticed this on trips, and I’ve begun to think about this more as I get older.

I always feel maturity comes through experience, it won’t come as you say. “Hey maturity, be my part of my life, pretty sure it does not work like that.’ Although poems could be shorter, but yes they are pretty well written. I am pretty sure, if it was last day on earth for me, I might have spend the day with myself doing something which I never got to do.
Love the idea of living life to the fullest. You only have one right?!
If this was my last day on earth, there’s no doubt that I would choose to spend it with my husband, children and close family!

I love the poem. It definitely hit the spot. I guess I am still immature in some ways. I have to make some changes and live life as it is supposed to be.
A good reminder to live life to its fullest. It used to be so easy to get caught up in the ridiculous. Thank goodness we do mature, I just wish it had started so much sooner! I feel like so much time was wasted on nonsense!

Maturity or adulthood doesn’t always come with age. This blog post is very inspirational and motivational for lots of adults (or not) out there struggling just to achieve and accomplish what’s supposed to be done.

My mum posted this Andrade poem on her FB wall and it was my first time of ever reading it. I connected with it a lot. Don’t waste your time on fruitless endeavours and people and live life to the fullest.
My soul has a hat really struck me, I feel myself wanting more maturity my life and less bullshit. I have very little patience for certain types of people these days!
I want to surround myself with mature people as well. It encourages me to think deeply and do meaningful things.
So many things have come with wisdom. One of the most important life lessons is that our time is not indefinite, so I need to place a premium on the time I have. Typically, I spend every free moment with my family.

I would definitely spend it with my husband so, that I can make sure that he will be okay. I will remind him that he is loved and that it’s not the end of the world after I am gone.

Beautiful poem, but sad. I do agree with the part about having two lives. For me, my second life started when I stopped using drugs and entered the recovery community. How much time I had wasted. How many things I didn’t start out of fear that they would take too long to finish. Just have to remember that the time is going to pass anyway

Such a great read! Life is short and it is definitely important to not take our time for granted.
Maturity does take someone and make them into something better. But it takes time and trial for them to get there. Which I suppose is what makes maturity a process if nothing else.

This is such a nice post and as a person we should learn to value our time. We should spend our time in our family and with serving to our God.
I believe in living everyday as if it’s just an ordinary day. I know it’s odd because most people tend to live as though it is their last. But for me it is the little things in life that mean the most me. The daily things I do with my family that I know I would really miss.
I love the poem about growing up and growing impatient with immaturity. I think it is part of understanding how people feel and beginning to have more empathy!

I have been acutely aware of my mortality since the day my rheumatologist informed me with a flourish that rheumatoid arthritis would without a doubt reduce my life expectancy by at least 20 years.
Who would I choose to spend your time with if it was the last day I spent on earth? That would definitely be my brother and his children, my housekeeper and her niece.
I always need an extra bit of motivation on Mondays!

As I grow older, I realized that time is too precious to be wasted. I have learned to remove toxic people and drama from my life. I want to focus my time on my husband and kids and our home. That’s where my time and energy needs to be.

If I didn’t have much time left, I would try to do all of my favorite things one last time. Eat my favorite foods, visit my favorite places, and hang out with my favorite people.
So very true! Being purposeful is very wise and it keeps us on course of our purpose. If we know our purpose, we are not wasting time wandering because of the opinions of others.

That is a powerful poem. It evoked great emotion within me. Most likely due my own juncture in life and how deeply I can relate.
This post is an eye-opener and makes us think what exactly we want from life. When we realise the bitter truth that life is not forever, we choose our conversations, experiences and the people we want to be with. We try to make life as drama free as it can be and enjoy each moment it offers, just as we would relish the candies when a few are left in the bowl.
