Motivation Mondays: Fountain of Youth

13/08/2018

“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” Sophia Loren

Motivation Mondays: Fountain of Youth

What does the fountain of youth mean to you? Pearl S. Buck said, “To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth.” Is that true for you? Birthdays are a great time to reflect on our lives and look back to our days of youthful exuberance. Since I celebrated mine last week, I’ve been thinking about the things I enjoyed doing in my youth, and how those things helped me create space and a place of imperative reflection and healing. Yet, I am equally aware that the notion of youth or the fountain of youth, to be specific, is truly a state of mind.  We can choose to age gracefully, enjoy the things that always made us happy, and stay passionate about life even as the dewy days of physical youth evaporate. It is a choice. If you believe it is a state of joy, state of mind, place of personal growth, and creative power, you have discovered that fountain. How do you convey that to others around you who think you should “act your age”?, be like X or Z? One of the beauties of this world we inhabit is our diversity of interests, and we must fight to create space that fits our needs and maintain the range.

Add to this, the fact that yesterday was International Youth Day and the UN-designated theme for 2018 is IYD 2018 – Safe Spaces for Youth, then it makes sense to hit the pause button and consider how far we have come and how much more work is needed. How far have you come? How do you create space for the things you still enjoy from your younger years? Come back for more…

A Madrigal by William Shakespeare
Crabbed Age and Youth
Cannot live together:
Youth is full of pleasance,
Age is full of care;
Youth like summer morn,
Age like winter weather;
Youth like summer brave,
Age like winter bare:
Youth is full of sports,
Age’s breath is short,
Youth is nimble, Age is lame:
Youth is hot and bold,
Age is weak and cold,
Youth is wild, and Age is tame:-
Age, I do abhor thee;
Youth, I do adore thee;
O! my Love, my Love is young!
Age, I do defy thee-
O sweet shepherd, hie thee,
For methinks thou stay’st too long. via poemhunter.com

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.” Samuel Ullman

Motivation Mondays: Fountain of Youth

Motivation Mondays: Fountain of Youth

Is Youth a State of Mind? Once we remove the physical qualifiers, I think so too. I’ve always loved music from many genres and I spent my youth attending or organizing parties and going to nightclubs. I danced all night in the UK and took dance classes in NY to stay on top of the moves. The disco era was great and even though I caught the tail end of it, I never missed an opportunity to hang out with friends at the latest NY nightclub and party. I loved going to concerts too but, for whatever reason, many of my college friends were not keen on the idea. Since I preferred to go with others, I missed out on some great concerts that I still regret to this day. After I got heavily into yoga and meditation, I cut back on my secular music interests. Then, I got married, settled into parenthood and the music-party-music scene dropped off my radar. I still bought and listened to all the hits, and even my twins remember me playing Tupac, BIGGIE, Mary J, Lauren H, Sade, and a host of other popular artists on the car CD/DVD player.  But the concerts and such were no more.

Dial forward to the new millennium: Recently, I started feeling the urge to get back into attending concerts again. There is something to be said about seeing an artist you love performing their music live; it is magical and the wave of love coming from the gathering of fans at these events can’t be beaten…  I dusted off my dancing shoes and slowly tiptoed back into the world of live music. Seeing Sade perform live was a dream, especially as she had been on hiatus for years. I added a few more artists concerts to the mix; Beyonce, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Kanye and JayZ,  and even a few more… then I skipped a beat. Sometime this year, I think, I  heard Unforgettable by/with French Montana and Swae Lee on YouTube, and a long lost memory was triggered. I have since dusted off those shoes and attended a bunch of concerts; Hot 97 SummerFest, Rae Sremmurd/Wiz Khalifa, Billboard 100, and, coming soon, Drake w/ Migos and many more in the works. I love Afrobeats, HipHop, Rap, R&B, Gospel, Pop, Reggae, and a sampling of other musical genres. I’m back at dance class and enjoy going to concerts where I meet so many people; the majority of them are avid fans who want to have fun and rock out to the music they are hearing. All these beats keep me moving and youthful.  Music reinvigorates the spirit and I’ll be damned if I’ll let anyone tell me who, when or what I should listen to… Live your life. Youth is a state of mind.

The Child’s Faith is New by Emily Dickinson
The Child’s faith is new—
Whole—like His Principle—
Wide—like the Sunrise
On fresh Eyes—
Never had a Doubt—
Laughs—at a Scruple—
Believes all sham
But Paradise—

Credits the World—
Deems His Dominion
Broadest of Sovereignties—
And Caesar—mean—
In the Comparison—
Baseless Emperor—
Ruler of Nought—
Yet swaying all—

Grown bye and bye
To hold mistaken
His pretty estimates
Of Prickly Things
He gains the skill
Sorrowful—as certain—
Men—to anticipate
Instead of Kings— via poemhunter.com

International Youth Day 2018 – UN Chief and UN Youth Envoy Use #UnitedNations #YouthDay #SafeSpaces4Youth

On 17 December 1999, in resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998), calling for 12 August be declared International Youth Day. SDG Knowledge

Celebrations of International Youth Day:  In the 18 years since the creation of International Youth Day, the UN has always had a designated theme and call for youth action each year. The themes are carefully researched and focus on important issues our youth around the world are grappling with. As our digital and offline world mesh and overlap one another, there is an even greater need for creating a safe space that allows us all room to think, plan, and create. This year’s theme takes a closer look at the subject and recommends that we not forget the power of building/creating spaces that allow free thinking and serves as a conduit of light and learning. Below is a list of Youth Day themes from years past. Each theme speaks to the immediate challenges and urgent needs of youth globally.

Fountain of Youth by Dave Alan Walker
In the midst
of an everlasting journey
with no arrival in sight
a fountain of youth
is draining away

Don’t waste your life
don’t throw it all away
live it to the full
but with a future in your mind

    I’m not 100% sure I agree with the quote from Pearl S. Buck. I need to think about that one a little more, but I do agree with Samuel Ullman and Emily Dickinson. When we see the world through the eyes of a child (even if they’re our old wrinkly eyes) and imagine passionately, then we have a never ending fountain of youth inside of us

Although there is a striking contrast between youth and age in those shakespearean verses, he agrees in the end that love defies those limitations. It’s interesting to think about what “youth” really means. Sometimes I wonder what people (women) mean when they talk about “aging gracefully.” Sometimes it seems like they’re talking about looking young as long as possible. But really I think it means acceptance of who you are and where you’re at in your life.
