The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO and taken up by the UN General Assembly in 1997 (A/RES/52/13), which defined the Culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. Motivation Mondays: International Friendship Day When we think of the word “friendship,” we think of our friends, family and all the great souls who have crossed our path over the years. No matter our standing in life, we all need friends or good people who can lift us up and encourage us in times of trouble. Our friends play that role without asking more of us, and we can offer the same by helping and supporting people around the world. If we had more friendships between nations and support systems that helped those in need, we would see greater collaborations and global peace. It is this idea that led to the birth of the International Day of Friendship in 1997. True friends do everything in their power to avoid conflict and to solve problems, When nations come together in the spirit of friendship and work to keep those principles alive, we see progress and more peace initiatives. Instead of focusing just on what we can get out of our friendships, the UN has nudged us to be more inclusive and consider how the same principles can bring about global goodwill. Come back for more!

International Friendship Day is also intended to support the goals and objectives of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). The Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace (A/RES/53/243) adopted in 1999 set 8 areas of action for nations, organizations and individuals to undertake in order for a culture of peace to prevail:
foster a culture of peace through education;
promote sustainable economic and social development;
promote respect for all human rights;
ensure equality between women and men;
foster democratic participation;
advance understanding, tolerance and solidarity;
support participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge;

Motivation Mondays: International Friendship Day Our friendships matter. Even if, from time to time, we find things about each other that irk us, we make time to talk things out and remember the bond that brought us together as friends. Because my family traveled and moved quite a bit in my early years, I learned to make friends quickly and be accommodating of changes and shifts in our friendships. My closest friends go way back, and one thing that has always pulled us together is laughter. Not only laughter in good times but the ability to ease each other’s woes with humor in harsh times. I value my girlfriends for being there through storms and sunsets, and I thank them all. Some I haven’t seen in years, and Facebook brought several of us together. Others I see regularly or speak to occasionally, but whenever we reconnect and talk, it is a familiar feeling, like the satisfaction, we get from enjoying a good meal. 🙂

The International Day of Friendship is also based on the recognition of the relevance and importance of friendship as a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world.
The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. UN.org/friendship

Thank you for this fabulous post! Friendship is so crucial to a healthy life as we all need people that we can depend on in times of need and we need people to be there for us when we are in need. I love my friends and love spending quality time… as much as possible with them. Plus… my husband is truly my bestie!
I love everything about this post and I do agree in everything that you’ve said. It is so important for a person to have a friend or friends, a friend who always love and care, a friend who always listen, a friend who always there thru ups and downs and a friend who always correct you when you are doing a mistake.
I had no idea that “International Friendship Day” was even a thing. Perhaps it is because I really don’t have any friends. Most of my friends live in my computer. lol

International Friendship Day is one I’m glad to celebrate. Through blogging I’ve made quite a few friends from other countries and I’m so glad that I did. They not only have taught me to be more inclusive in how I write and not always assume that my review should be geared towards just Americans but they’ve also shown how accepting and understanding people from other countries and cultures are, which you wouldn’t believe if all you did was listen to some people and some articles…if you know what I mean.
I must admit I didn’t know about 30 July being proclaimed International Friendship Day but what a wonderful idea and initiative! Anything to bring about greater friendships in this crazy modern day world we live in has got to be a step forward.
I love this special day. It a reminder for all of us to cherish our friendships. I try to contact my closest friends near and far and tell them how much they mean to me.

The pictures here has shown me that we make friends not only with human but with animals too. It also remind me to reconnect with some other old school classmate again. I guess is time to call out another gathering and catch up.

When I was younger I made an effort to make friends from other countries through snail mail. It was so nice to receive letters from people abroad. But now, I just got too busy that I never found the time to reconnect Too bad.
We do need friends and they are hard to come by; the good ones anyway. So when you do find a good one, cherish them and let them know they mean something to you. You never now what tomorrow may bring.

Friendships are important. I find the older I get, the more valuable it seems as everyone is busy living their lives. We have to continue to make time for those important to us too though.

I believe that when it comes to friendship, it’s a 2-way street. I’ve lost friends along the way who doesn’t know how to reciprocate the love and respect that I give.
Great event! I think this should be strengthen especially in countries that in feud with others for so long.
I’ve learned over the years that not everyone is a true friend, but that the ones who are must be valued and supported. When I feel the need to vent or share an important win in my life there are a handful of people who I confide in and who I know will be supportive. I can’t imagine my life without them.

Friendships…sigh…my best friend is my husband. I have never had a best friend. Oh yeah, I did…because they all need something from me.
I have one grown child who prefers the company of family to a group of friends. I too love when we are all together but wish that child could see the value in long-term friends as well.

Your post makes me think of Sister Cities. I worked for someone a while back who did a lot of work with them. My city of Cincinnati had something like 8 sister cities around the world. The idea was started to foster international friendship and world peace.

I had no clue there was an international friendship day. I love that because good friendships deserve to be celebrated!
I discussed this with my boyfriend, whose dad actually doesn’t believe in friends. He said, there can be acquaintances, colleagues, hobbyist group, but no forever friends. I think he has been hurt before….
I noticed for years that, the more I became mature, the lesser my good friends remains to my side. The remaining friends stick to me through thick and thin, and tested with time. I treasured them most like family.

It seems challenging to make new friends as we get older, but I don’t think it has to be. I think if we find one thing in common or share our story, we will discover new friends.

True friendships are one of life’s true gifts. As I grew older, I realized I don’t need a lot of “friends”, just a few true ones.

In Chinese culture, there is a tradition called ‘laotong’ meaning ‘friendship or sisters for life’. It is a special arrangement usually my two parents, making their children be a laotong, that promises to help each other as they grow. It was beautiful thinking about it.
