Population growth is straining the Earth’s resources to the breaking point, and educating girls is the single most important factor in stabilizing that. That, plus helping women gain political and economic power and safeguarding their reproductive rights. Al Gore

 

On Wednesday, July 11, we will celebrate World Population Day and, as I write this post, we stand at 7.6 billion souls and growing on planet earth. How will our resources provide for the growing numbers? How will we sustain this growth? How will the growing numbers impact our environment, global development goals, and other matters of great concern? Whether we choose to embrace the rest of the world or pretend we are the only ones in it, we will be impacted. Since 1989, when UNDP  created World Population Day in response to the excitement generated by the Day of 5 Billion ( July 11 1987), it hasn’t looked back. It has tackled many issues facing the world from empowerment to education to ending poverty and more. With each new year, our global population continues to explode, our scientific community remains concerned that unless we all get involved in dealing with issues affecting the earth, we will have a hard time making our planet sustainable for us, our children, grandchildren and beyond. Indeed, the alarm is ringing louder as each year passes by and our numbers on the planet increases. What must we do?

Important Facts About World Population Day: It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, and today, it stands at about 7.5 billion.
This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of people surviving to reproductive age, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. In 2018, the theme for World Population Day  is Family Planning is a Human Right. As per the UN, this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, where family planning was, for the first time, globally affirmed to be a human right. It is a very important theme because we live on a planet that, while abundant in many ways, has  finite resources for the ever exploding population growth  we are experiencing globally.  Some of the discussions on the subject suggest that giving women freedom to their reproductive rights, an equitable education and full knowledge of the nine standards to upholding their right to family planning** would make a tremendous impact. When we are able to provide adequate healthcare and family planning options to the 214 million women in the world who need it, we are helping each other stay healthy, raise families we can feed, educate and support, and we are helping reduce infant mortality rates in poverty stricken areas where the survival rate for babies and young mothers are terrible. But we need collaborative and comprehensive action that is humane and ethical.

In essence, the nine standards can be explained as thus:**Nine standards to uphold the human right to family planning must be Non-discriminatory, Available, Accessible, Acceptable, Good quality, Encourage Informed decision-making, Offer Privacy and confidentiality, Invite Participation and Have Accountability. If all member states honor the tenets of these nine recommendations, we will be on the road to containing the explosion.  Two other important considerations are the questions raised by Annalee Newitz: Is our population growth going to kill us all? Potentially yes… If we don’t take control of the explosion by offering planning options to families, better education, and finding ways to increase the development of a greener environment, we will perish.  Is there any ethical way to prevent that from happening? Yes, read the answer to #1 and the entire post. There are humane efforts member nations can make to ensure we deliver a sustainable and safe planet to our children; it begins with us, our attitudes towards consumption, procreation, and managing our planet for all on it.  Without sensible  decision-making by our leaders, we will create and leave an untenable legacy for our kids.

 

World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987. By resolution 45/216 of December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly decided to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development.

What 10 things do we need to know about World Population?  When I think of our world population, I imagine a world so diverse and culturally rich that it saddens me to read that so many live in poverty. How could we live in an abundantly blessed world (in some aspects) and children still go to bed hungry; even here in the US? Hunger and poverty remain a sad but persistent problem for families in rural areas and it is a tragedy that this is the cases in countries around the world.  If we would all consume only what we need and learn to share with others without an agenda, we would be on the road to ending world hunger by 2020.

What other points do you know about our world population? Did you know that there are:
1. more young people in the world than ever before…
2. more women in sub-Saharan Africa who are as likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth as women in nineteenth-century England…
3. 225 million women in developing countries who need access to modern contraceptives and millions more who get no prenatal care…
4. more Child marriages every year; it remains widespread; around 37,000 child marriages take place each day around the world…
5. many complications in pregnancy and childbirth and they are the 2nd leading killers of adolescent girls in developing countries…
6. over 7 billion on this planet and by the end of the 21st C, our global population could be as high as 17 billion…
7. fewer HIV-related deaths among adults; it’s down by 35% but the % has gone up for adolescents…
8. millions of preteen girls still experience FGM? If not stopped, about 15 million girls between ages 15 and 19 will be subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) between now and 2030…
9. millions migrating across borders globally every year and Migration will continue to grow; in 2013, 232 million people were international migrants and in 2017, there were 258 million international migrants…
10. urbanization explosions globally. More than 50% of the world is urbanized and the trend will continue; the implications are huge especially the impact on greening, consumption/waste disposal and the spread of disease…

 

2018 theme: Family Planning is a Human Right.  World Population Day, 11 July, This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, where family planning was, for the first time, globally affirmed to be a human right. The conference’s outcome document, known as the Teheran Proclamation, stated unequivocally: “Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children.”  Additional Language included this: Women and girls have the right to avoid the exhaustion, depletion and danger of too many pregnancies, too close together. Men and women have the right to choose when and how often to embrace parenthood — if at all.     When you consider the statistics of over 7 billion people now and 6 of these being growth in just the past 200 years – plus 1 billion close to starvation – there is little wonder we have a world population day to raise awareness. The rate we are growing and the resulting implications are truly frightening. Definitely education together with female empowerment has to be key in us collectively working through this massive problem.

    This is such a great post and it is really an interesting thing to talk about this perfect for the US issue today that their fertility rate are decreasing. Is it really a big deal in a powerful country? Maybe they just learned how to plan for them to have a good life not only for them but also for their future kids.

    The theme of family planning as a human right is more pertinent than ever. Even in the U.S. with talk of the SCOTUS nominee, there is a lot of concern that Roe v. Wade will be overturned. It’s very scary to think about. Also, the facts you included are so important for everyone to be aware of.

    Indeed population is exploding, there has to be some curbs but even I’m not sure how much things can be ethical in this way. Rather, I also feel, it varies basis country to country, resources, financial conditions and lot more things

    I wasn’t aware about a day like this. It’s really important that we raise awareness on this because it affects the whole world. Being concerned about population means being concerned about the well being of the people who are currently living their lives, struggling about not having enough work available, or not being able to put food on the table. Such an important day to educate people about family planning and more.

    I give a lot of thought to this issue… It’s hard for me not to get too political in my opinions about it – but that’s one of the challenges, I feel. People stop working together for the common good because they’re too busy saying who is right and who is wrong. It bums me out.

    I really don’t believe that population growth is going to kill us all. I believe people who make ignorant and selfish decisions will do that. The rapid growth of the human population is incredible. I think people need to be more educated about how to sustain our natural resources and take care of the planet given the explosive growth.

    I don’t have any children but have seen how the education of the female population has changed the size and dynamic of families in my own community. In my experience, when women are educated about their productive rights and options and have control over their reproductive choices they choose to have smaller families. However, in my own extended family I have noticed that the the opposite seems to be true when the family disposable income increases to a point where money is no longer a limiting factor.

    The numbers and their movement upwards is really scary. I believe something does need to be done about it but it takes carful planning and guts on the part of the government to implement any worthwhile campaign.

    The ever exploding population growth we are experiencing globally is quite alarming and it’s good to know that there is an agency which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of this issue. Here in the Philippines, girls as young as 15 or 16 get pregnant. The government must really pay attention to this and also family planning.

    Yup. Population control sounds very…odd…almost like eugenics especially when you know that the powers-that-be are referring to particular global demographics or countries. Nevertheless, we should be slowing down population explosion as we barely have resources and habitable land to go round.

    It’s crazy how the world is so over populated and blows my mind to think how we are ever going to get on top of that problem. Surely it’s just going to get worse and worse!

    Revisited your site so I could show this to my sister to read. She says she does not know where to stand. If we limit the population growth, there would be and “older generation” in the future. If that happens, who will take over the responsibilities of caring for the world and preventing its destruction? If we don’t do something about the fast growing population, it will still lead to destruction!

    Wow. Its been that long already? 50 years! I think couples do have the right to plan for a future family. However, I believe that abortion is not a solution to the issue of overpopulation. It would be better to prevent, than to abort a pregnancy.

    I think that the approach to sex should be less nonchalant and more emphasis on the fact that it does, indeed, create another human being. And in the same token of allowing reproductive rights, I think that extends to family like my own that are large, I had one sibling and I wanted to raise my children with a large family, and I do honestly think that is my right. I’ll feed my family and care for them and I’m sure they won’t all have big families, I bet at least one will choose to have no children at all. I think there is so very much to all of this. I think a lot of people are choosing not to have children at all these days,

    When I was a child, my mother always scolded us when we refused to eat all our food by reminding us that there were other children in Africa who were not that fortunate to have a meal every day.

    I could never imagine or understand these children’s experience, until I saw the images of the Ethiopian famine in 1984. Since then my own country has seen mass migration internally from rural areas with limited prospects, as well as from countries to the north where millions of people have been displaced by famine and war.

    My prayer is that world leaders resolve to prioritise both the access to education as well as family planning for the women in the communities to ensure that they have some control over the outcomes of their lives and that of their children.
