Happy Father’s Day: Over the years, I’ve shared memories of my own father and how much I cherished his presence in my life and, after his death, his absence in my life. Today, I want to share some poems and later share some thoughts on the subject. As Father’s Day approaches, on June 17, I am sure you have your own memories to share. How would you like to honor your Dad? What do you treasure about your relationship? What remains unresolved?

I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection. Rumi
Waiting for Loved Ones: Some of the memories I hold dear are of waiting for my Dad to return from one of his business trips abroad. Teitman’s poem below reminds me of how often we waited for him to return from another country. My anticipation had as much to do with seeing him as it did receiving a gift from some far flung place he visited on his journey. He didn’t disappoint; he’d bring us clothes, shoes or treats and, on one occasion, I got a beautiful watch with a red leather strap. All his gifts were treasured, enjoyed and parceled away in our brains, surfacing at odd moments to remind us of him. The greater gift was his wisdom, filled pithy words of advice that seeped like precious oil through our brains and into our lives… For that, I thank you Dad… and like Bogle’s poem affirms at the end, I’m glad you were mine.

My father is my first love, my first prince charming, and my knight in shining armour! It is difficult to find someone like him, but now I am happy that I did… but my father wasn’t complete smiling coz, it means there is another man in his baby girl’s eyes.
You have such a great perspective. Love this. Thank you for the encouraging words….it really made me think.
My father was a very hard working man that always made sure his family was taken care of, We knew he loved us, we just knew. Due to the abuses he took from his father which was an alcoholic he would act out in a deep rage (only a few times in his life) and I was always at the end of his leather and buckle. We started working through that as he found out he had cancer. I’m alright without him telling me why because I found out many things that happened to him that no child or teen should go through. I’m sure that was the demon behind those rages. I’m just sorry he never was able to get help to deal with it.

Very inspiring post.. I’m a daddy’s girl and we both share the same interest in life. I am very lucky to have a great father growing up! I really treasure those times when my father comes home from months of working in a far place. When he’s home, and we’re eating dinner together, he always gives me a bigger piece of meat, and I felt so important at that time.

I’ve always love that Dylan Thomas poem. Father’s Day is always a hard time for me, my father passed away a few years ago and it just hasn’t been the same.

We share some similar childhood memories as my father traveled on the road for a living as well and wouldn’t reward of patience every Friday night with a variety of treats.

I can really relate to your stories. My dad traveled for work as well, and I can remember waiting for him at the gate (pre-911). It was really hard when he was gone, and I remember he would always bring my sister and I a gift. Now he’s sick and I just hope to spend as much time with him as I can.

This is such a wonderful post remember how great our father is so dear to me and I am so thankful to God that my father is still here with me having a chance to celebrate this special day with him together with my mother and siblings. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I also waited eagerly for my dad to return from his business trips when I was a kid. It was so exciting to receive the gifts that he brought for us. He still does it and I am still the same little kid waiting for my gifts!

What a great and aptly timed post to honor fathers. This Father’s Day is bittersweet for me, as my dad is leaving a moving across the country the following week. While it’s not goodbye forever, it’s difficult to process. He’s never been farther than a quick hours drive my entire life. It’ll definitely be different, but I’m excited for his adventures.

Awww.. Those quotes and poems are really inspiring. My mom and dad separated when I was 2, but my dad always made time and would always visit us during important events. We were achievers and he always want to be the one to put our medals!

I didn’t grow up with a dad but I had some great male role models. And now my husband is a great dad to our furbabies!

It’s seems like your Dad taught you well and reassured you that you can do and be anything. That’s awesome! Keep his memory alive and continue living in that motto. And yes anyone can be a Father but it takes a man to be a Dad. And that title holds the cards for a lifetime to a child.

This Father’s Day, I’m planning to celebrate it a bit differently than what I usually do for both this and Mother’s Day. A friend invited me to hand out cards and assorted men’s items to passer by’s. I don’t know how it works but I like the idea!

It’s obvious how much you loved your dad and how he loved you, especially when he always got you something whenever he went somewhere. That was inspiring to me to be a good dad one day; I hope my child sees me the same way.

Showing us how to live rather than merely telling us is so much better. By showing us in positive actions it enables us to be better and to help teach others including our own children.

My maternal granddad was a father figure to me and my 3 siblings and he was a huge influence in our lives, and even though he is no longer with us his wise words and acts of kindness are always remembered!
I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing my own father, but even without knowing him personally, I know that I take after him in some ways. Genetics has it way regardless of how you choose. The poem I like the most was Father’s Day By Mary Frances Bogle.

I have a great relationship with my dad. It has its ups and downs, but he’s a very special part of my life and I’m very lucky to have him!
As a woman, I believe having a supportive and loving father made all the difference to my upbringing. I also know I was one of the lucky ones in my country. Some of these poems are quite interesting. I had not read any of them before.

I certainly miss my Dad on Father’s Day (and every day in between) when so many around me celebrate with their fathers. I lost my Dad on September 2, 2002, due to lymphoma. He was an amazing father and role model. I always write a commemorative post on Facebook every Father’s Day, and share a blog post in his memory. One of my blogs, Words of Encouragement, is actually dedicated to him.

I am glad that I had so many good memories of my Father and how much he show us love. Wish that he is still with us, but life must move one. I know he wants us, too.
