BLACK PANTHER Trailer 2: (Extended) Marvel 2018

WAKANDA FOREVER:  Black Panther is the seminal, Afro-futurism, superhero film of 2018; it’s about the technologically advanced, yet largely unknown, nation of Wakanda and the battle for control of its leadership. The black panther as the animal personification of the reigning king is protector of the Wakanda people. We have a rightful King to the throne, T’Challa son of the late King T’Chaka, challenged first by the neighboring Jabari Tribe’s leader, M’Baku, and then by a renegade, pretender to the throne, Erik Stevens a U.S. black ops soldier nicknamed “Killmonger” who is the son of King T’Chaka’s late undercover brother, N’Jobu. The powerful fight scenes, struggles for control and overall intrigue in the film are greatly tied to the one major resource that nation holds dear – Vibranium – a magical metal capable of endless uses that make the Wakandans invincible, wealthy and, by choice, isolationist. From the opening scene of the majestic waterfalls, to the powerful presence of the Dora Milaje female warriors, the ancestral rituals, the outrageous technological wizardry managed by the beloved Shuri, sister of T’Challa, and to the closing, post credit scene of T’Challa at the UN, this riveting movie, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, grabs you by the neck and holds you captive.

Black Panther is powerful, inspiring and rich with strong, purposeful characters who will make you laugh, cry and champion them on to the end of time. The cinematography is lush and the characters are complex  and there are no gratuitous sex scenes in this movie. There are no namby pamby females relegated to second class status here… we see female warriors, in charge, doing their duty in concert with male warriors on the battle field. The portrayal of women as an important, VALUED and strong presence in Wakanda made me want to move there ASAP. Okoye, as the King’s general, keeps her fierce battalion of Amazonian female warriors in ship shape. God damn it, pass me my vibranium tipped spear! Queen Ramonda is dignified and wise and invokes the ancestral powers, that only a mother knows best, to save her son. Nakia is willful yet smart at stalking the enemy. She is a past and recent love interest of the king but duty to Wakanda calls first as her dharma. Shuri, hands down, rocked her female scientist role. You’d get my drift when you watch the flick. She’s sassy and sharp on her feet… plus, the creative muse loves her.  There are no insipid, one dimensional blaxploitation characters running amok either.  From the costumes to the hair styles to the action packed scenes, this is all business  with humor added at the right moment for comic relief. We laugh with and not at the characters and even the reprehensible arms dealer, Ulysses Klaue, makes us want to see justice prevail even if it includes his demise at the hands of Killmonger … but enough with the spoilers!

HomeTeam History: 5 Things You Need To Know About African History Before You Watch Black Panther!

What lessons can we learn about leadership from this epic movie? The first lesson that stood out powerfully in the movie is that a true leader serves his people unequivocally. The people do not exist for his manipulative pleasure. He seeks the counsel of the elders who represent the people. He mingles among them and participates in ancestral worship and rituals that are beneficial to the nation.  The people are reminders of the responsibility that rests on his uneasy shoulders and he must defend his title in the face of great challenges from a neighbor and an outlier. T’Challa proves his métier in his battles with M’Baku and Killmonger and still finds room in his heart to forgive W’Kabi for his betrayals.   Another lesson is that a leader honors the spirit of previous leaders by continuing to develop  the nation and do good works. While a great leader seeks the advice of those who came before and doesn’t malign them, he must also make his own decisions for the good of the country. T’Challa feels compelled to right the wrong done by his father to his late Uncle and even though it leads to a repeat of their familial destiny, T’Challa’s determination to use the knowledge and power of the Wakanda people for universal GOOD rises above everything else.

A great leader must seek and have access to ALL the facts and use the information with great wisdom to benefit ALL of the subjects of the nation. True growth and advancements cannot flourish in the face of half truths and efforts to disenfranchise some while elevating a few. True leadership demands humility, clarity, decisive action, diversity of access/opinion, benevolence and good will. Great leaders remember their trusted allies and seek their support. No leader can truly lead in isolation or as a supreme dictator forever. A great leader must look to the future of the nation they lead and focus on creating a legacy that sustains the nation, its neighbors, and its allies while taking into account ways to work towards peace with its enemies/detractors.  So, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown because leadership demands constant reflection, collaboration and correction. What more about this movie was riveting? Something that, as an African, endeared me to the film was that they directly and/or indirectly, opened the door to conversations about the place of scarification, ancestral veneration, spirituality, ancient architecture, use of masks, the fierceness of ancient male/female warriors and the healing arts on the African continent. More on that later… As for the film, the actors brought their A-game to the film and delivered  with precision, pride and a reverence for the script and their craft. Shuri was a favorite because she always had a wise, ironic or funny remark up her sleeve and was the brains behind a lot of the technological advancements that helped T’Challa battle the enemy. Marvel Studios with Ryan Coogler’s directing chops and the effective work of distributors Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures delivered the goods on schedule to rave reviews. As I write this post thinking about the lessons we can learn about leadership on this Presidents’ Day and Black History Month I can’t help but be proud of the fact that we are celebrating a movie that shows the black experience in a positive light and makes rich  cultural references that remind us of the great ancestral history of powerful, male and female warrior/leaders from the continent: Chaka the Zulu, Hannibal of Tunisia, the tactical military systems, and our Amazonian queens of legend Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Nzinga, Queen Amina, and Queen Amanirenas of Kush. I give it an A+!

    I’ve been dying to see Black Panther. It makes such a refreshing change from Hollywood always potraying our amazing continent as a poverty stricken, war torn and corrupt. I know that’s a big part of our lives but the bigger part has always been our rich diversity, cultures and the breathtaking beauty and soulfulness of the land and it’s people.

    I am so happy for the impact this movie is having and for all the kids around the world who can finally watch a superhero that looks like them and realize they, too, can be a super hero. I read a twitter thread about how the costumers put the different acknowledgements of African tribes into the pieces, and it was fascinating. Really fascinating.

    The preview of Black panther look very interesting, it is great that you have also included the clips on African culture. I have limited knowledge on African history and culture. I am glad to check out the clips before I watch the movie. I didn’t know face painting is one of the unique culture in Africa.
    I love history and culture so going to watch this movie is a must for me.

    I haven’t seen “Black Panther” yet, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. Leadership is something we’re lacking in our country. There are a few that are doing their best, but it seems to be drowned out by the loud ones that talk (tweet) and do nothing but tear America down. I await the day that true leaders rise up again and look out for all people.

    I don’t watch a lot of movies because I find it really hard to sit still and keep concerntration long enough to watch them all the way through but this one has me intruiged now, I like that there is history and thought behind it – you’ve definately caught my attention here!

    This sounds like a great movie. I am hoping to take my grandchildren especially my granddaughters. I like the passion they give her. I wish all leaders looked out for all their people, treating everyone equal and listening to everyone.

    Amazing review! Everyone that I’ve talked said that they loved the movie. I live in the boonies and the one theater that is close to me is only showing the movie in French. I’m so sad! I have to wait a few more weeks to go to the city to see Black Panther.

    I have been seeing interview snippets with cast and crew on tv for the past two weeks and would love to see it this weekend. Your description of the movie and how it depicts African people and leaders brings tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my skin, because it feels like the opposite to what my country has endured for the past 10 yrs under a corrupt leader.

    I generally don’t like this kind of movie but I have heard so much wonderful praise about it that I am planning to see this one. Thanks for the review – it solidified my desire to see it.

    Its about time a major box office movie had a predominantly African American cast. I know there have been many great movies in the past with such a cast, and some which even made a great deal of money (as well a big impact on the people who watched them), but to see one get the funding and publicity it deserves is great. Plus the super hero aspect. Its about time young African American kids could see themselves reflected in so many strong, powerful, positive role models on the big screen. I am excited to watch this movie and to learn more about the related culture as I do so. Thank you for the link to the 5 things you need to know post, as well. I will read that before watching 🙂

    The movie had so many memorable moments and lines. If you think about it, Tchalla broke an immovable but selfish tradition and that’s the most powerful moral that the movie offered to its viewers.

    I haven’t seen this yet (I’ve gotten less into Marvel as I’ve gotten older. I’m lame) but I keep hearing about how amazing it is! It seems like a breakthrough film in terms of breaking down racial and feminist walls though! It seems like it deserves all the hype it’s getting!

    There were so many lessons on leadership from this movie. My favorite is when T’Challa’s father told him, “A man who doesn’t prepare his son for his death has failed him as a father.” It was all about legacy and leaving an inheritance (wisdom, money, knowledge, etc.) for your children’s children. The movie was so empowering!

    I am so glad to read this review. My son went to see this movie with his father. He had been begging to go see it since he saw the previews. He came home and raved about it. I asked about the women and he said they were fighters. I’m son proud to see this great movie on the big screen and happy that it’s doing so well.

    I think they did an amazing job with the storyline and everything else in the movie. The leadership is one of the things that I really appreciate as well as the representation of women and people of color in the movie. It’s really just so awesome!

    I have not seen the movie yet, but my hubby took our son and they loved it! I love movies about strength and honor! I’m not a big fan of sci-if, but I’m intrigued by this new genre of African-Futurism. As long as it doesn’t get too cult-fiction-y, I’m interested to see where it goes.

    I’ve been seeing a lot of folks talk about seeing this movie, mostly in terms of its merits as an action or superhero film. I love that you took the time to mention the rich characters and the fact that there are well-developed female roles, women as warriors, in this movie. I hadn’t really been wanting to see this movie. But I think after reading your comments, I may change my mind.

    Thank you for this review! I am not usually a big comic book movie fan (my brother owns a comic book shop and I think I was over ‘comics’ at a young age). But you’ve eloquently shown that this is far more than a comic movie and I am really intrigued to see it now!

    I still have not seen this movie! I want to watch it with my grandchildren and each week-end one is out with a friend or another is sick. I have heard great things about this movie and I believe every child should have a super hero to look up to just like them. Its good for their confidence.
