Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet. Plato
Most people are slow to champion love because they fear the transformation it brings into their lives. And make no mistake about it: love does take over and transform the schemes and operations of our egos in a very mighty way. Aberjhani
Love is a decision, it is a judgment, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgment and decision. Erich Fromm

What is Love beyond the declarations made on the 14th? How are you nurturing yourself? As Valentine’s Day rolls around, many of us go into overdrive mode. We pull out all the stops with chocolates, flowers and conjure up special loving outings with our beloveds. For those who choose to skip all the niceties, there is Galentine’s Day or a Treat yourself day. But love and all the complicated emotions we experience with it is a life long journey, and it doesn’t start or stop after the 14th. Beyond Valentine’s Day, we need to remember that self care is key to being able to care for others. When your tank is empty, there is little you can sincerely do for others. This is also Heart Health month so we must care about our heart on so many levels and it begins with us and our selfcare/love. In case you haven’t noticed, I have included videos that offer soothing music to help us tap into our happiness and relaxation quotient. Give one of the four a try and you’d be nicely surprised!

Every year, when Valentine’s Day comes around, I am reminded of an article “Do You Love Yourself?” by inspirational author Louise Hay. It is an important one I recommend to all to read because She offers twelve important tools/tips on self love that we can use to help us push past our old tired thinking and get back on the path to self love and growth. Since Valentine’s Day focuses on the subject of love, these tips are powerful and timely for this season, and I encourage you to add them to your daily motivation/inspiration guide and routine.  They are:

Stop All Criticism.                               Support Yourself.
Forgive Yourself.                                 Do Mirror Work
Don’t Scare Yourself.                         Be Loving to Your Negatives.
Be Gentle and Kind and Patient.    Love Yourself
Be Kind to Your Mind.                       Take Care of Your Body.
Praise Yourself.                                    Do It Now.

Relaxing Music – with Binaural Beats for Serotonin Release, Happiness Meditation, Happiness Frequency

Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up. James Baldwin
There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. John Lennon
This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet. Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi

What motivates your most important relationships? love or fear? Embrace the love and examine the cause of your fear. Regardless of what motivates you, it is important to maintain a grateful heart because a grateful heart never loses the battle in the game of love, no matter the outcome. Stay grateful for all the miraculous things that happen in your life and celebrate them. Enjoy the ups and the downs, and remember to express thanks to those who show you that they care. We live in a world of billions of people, yet many hurt for lack of care and consideration. Imagine how fortunate you are for having those who care about your well-being. If you are afraid to acknowledge the love then the fear dominates. Cherish it.

What do you know about Valentine’s Day? In some places, it is believed that on this day, women were given the go ahead to enjoy the company of a man they admired. But the story doesn’t end there. On February 14th, in countries around the world, lovers coo words of affection in celebration of the love they share. According to historical sources, this popular love-fest is held in remembrance of possibly three (3) martyred Saints named Valentine; a priest, a bishop, and a Christian missionary in Africa, and was created by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496. Yet, other accounts suggest Valentine’s Day is truly in observance of Lupercalia; an ancient rite of fertility and that any ties to the aforementioned saints are merely coincidental. Some believe the tradition grew from the days of Claudius I and the sacrifice young men made in leaving for war instead of staying home to raise a family; the celebration honored a wish those left behind had for the safe return of their beloved. The wistful sentiments that arise on this day prevails as lovers return to share a gift or a special moment and memory with their beloved. So you get to decide your definition of love and how you wish to express it… be reflective as it is a powerful emotion.

Super Intelligence: Memory Music

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. Lao Tzu
This is what our love is––a sacred pattern of unbroken unity sewn flawlessly invisible inside all other images, thoughts, smells, and sounds. Aberjhani
I think… if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts. Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

What kind of love are you living by? How can we learn and grow during this special season? We often forget that the best gifts of love we can give are our presence, our attention, and our shared memories. We can make Valentine’s Day even more special if we stop to consider its deepest value which far exceeds the trinkets we buy and share. The following Valentine’s Day Tips should help add a spring to your step and the warmth of love to your heart.
1) First and foremost, Send yourself a Valentine’s Day card and a bouquet of your favorite flowers.
2) Make a list of all the things you LOVE about YOU. Type it up and Frame it on your wall.
3) Invite your closest friends over for some comfort food and gift exchange and call it a Just Because Of Our Love Party.
4) Treat yourself and your family to a special outing and have each person share at least one thing they love about every one in the family.
5) Have each family member write down all the accolades and positive feedback  they shared about each other, and use the information to create individualized cards for each family member.

Take the time to tend to your own needs and then share the love in as many creative ways as possible. Make it a fun experience for all around you. If you are a boss, have your staff consider exchanging thoughtful, motivating messages to each other and hold a special lunch for the office. Anything that brings cheer to us and others is an act of love.

In a world full of temporary things you are a perpetual feeling. Sanober Khan
Could you really love somebody who was absolutely nobody without you? You really want somebody like that? Somebody who falls apart when you walk out the door? You don’t, do you? And neither does he. You’re turning over your whole life to him. Your whole life, girl. And if it means so little to you that you can just give it away, hand it to him, then why should it mean any more to him? He can’t value you more than you value yourself. Toni Morrison
Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation. Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi

Could you love somebody who was nobody without you?  It would create an unhealthy dependency. So it is always best to have a relationship with an equal not an unhealthy bind. If we keep the original premise of this holiday in mind, we are bound to make better and healthier choices of the heart.  Did you know that in the USA, Esther Howland is credited with developing the first Valentine’s Day card business in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1847? The cards were meant to help people to stop whining and start loving. By the 1950s, the exchange of cards grew to include roses and chocolates in red heart boxes. The diamond cartels joined the commercialization bandwagon in the 1980s by making a gift of jewelry another cherished way to celebrate the day. The millennium and the growth of the internet brought a new tradition in digital cards and online gift giving.

Today, the celebrations include music, parties, trips, extravagant gifts and wining/dinning limited only by our imagination and point of view. So, as you prepare for the endless indulgences, send a kiss of gratitude to all who made this a tradition and then send another kiss to those who might be home alone and celebrating it without a loved one nearby. We are all deserving of love and we can start by loving ourselves and giving thanks for the many ways it shows up in our lives. How are you nurturing yourself? Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤

Have a peaceful and productive week ahead!

I’ve had to adapt over the years to my husband’s love language. He’s a gift giver. All I’ve wanted from him is his time, but definitely shows it by giving a gift, which prompts me to do the same because I think that’s how I reach him. I kinda hate it. All I need from him is to share some laughs, some memories and some I love yous and nothing more.

I definitely agree that you can only love others well if and when you love and care for yourself first. I find that this is sometimes overlooked, but how can you do the best for someone if you can’t be your own best~~

We love our partner from our heart and not mind. Thus, we don’t need to look at the calendar to show our love. It is sweet that there is a special day for the same. However, we must spend our life with them in a way everyday feels like Valentine’s day.

Inspiring as always Elizabeth. I’m always a little torn about Valentine’s Day. It’s become so commercialized and we really should be loving our precious ones, including ourselves every single day. And then on the other hand it does kind of force us, with all the advertising and hype, to really think about what love means and all the different ways we can show it.

My husband and I may be considered odd, but we don’t really celebrate Valentine’s day. We believe that showing our love and appreciation should not be done on a particular day in a year. Simple loving gestures, little gifts, love notes, cooking a favorite meal is how we celebrate our love every day. I agree with loving oneself too. We cannot be capable of truly loving another person until we learn to love ourselves first.

I think this is beautifully said. A good reminder for all of us to love ourselves more and to keep doing things that would help nurture that self love. It’s important that we do, otherwise we won’t have enough love to give to others.

What a beautiful feature on Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day! Self-care is as important as is love, it is not just one day but a lifelong process. I do not celebrate Valentine’s Day just once in a year, it is all about how you feel most of the days in the year, love is a lifelong celebration, stays in the heart for whole life.

When my fiance and I first got together I was confused that his family tended to celebrate Valentines as a family thing. Gifts were exchanged and dinners were held and it was all a little strange to me at first. Then I realized that I loved it. Why should Valentines be only about romantic love? Why not love for our family, friends, pets, and – yes – ourselves!?

I think that there are all types of loves. Family love, friendship love and of course the love for your partner. I think it’s great the way we are now celebrating these types of loves on Valentine’s Day so it’s not so one dimensional.

Sometimes I feel unworthy, or unlovable. I am glad though that my husband loves me despite my feelings. I would hope he wouldn’t leave me because we weren’t equal in how we feel about ourselves. I do struggle with not loving myself the way I should. I feel a lot of unexplained guilt when I do show myself attention. I think that’s probably one of my least favorite quotes.

I have very much enjoyed reading your article Elizabeth! Not only I have learnt many new things from it (as usual) but also it left me thinking about my own life and how I love myself and people. I stopped for a second at your question “Could you love somebody who was nobody without you?” and my very first thought was “my children, when they were newborns! That kind of pure, devoted, unconditional love, I’ve never experienced anything similar, and yes, I know I couldn’t love anyone else in the same way. Love among adults shouldn’t be like that, that would be very unhealthy. But newborns depend on their parents (or similar figure) to actually survive, and it takes a lot of patience and courage which I think it is provided by love!

That was interesting learning the history behind Valentine’s Day. I didn’t know about the card making in the U.S. I think that loving ourselves should be a great way to celebrate the holiday. After celebrating with my kids at the arcade and dinner after, I took time for myself with candles, a book, some wine, and a bubble bath. It’s always a good idea to take care of oneself:)

Honestly, it’s a great feeling when you’re showered by gifts and flowers on Valentine’s day by others. Every day should be Valentine’s Day, there shouldn’t be a set day for others to show you how much they “love” you. I agree with you, it’s important to focus on loving yourself. If you can’t love yourself, how are you going to love others?

This Valentine’s Day overdrive has always bothered me. The way people who never give a damn about the feelings of others, go out and buy flowers and heart-shaped chocolate, because it is traditional to do so. I think that love doesn’t need to be materialised in that way. Love should be something ongoing, articulated and expressed by our actions and words, not only on one day of the year, but constantly.

I wasn’t familiar with the Hay poem “Do you love yourself” but it reminded me of a poem I learned in middle school by Edgar Guest entitled “Myself”. It begins, ‘I have to live with myself and so I want to be fit for myself to know…” That poem has stuck with my my entire life and in fact I have it on my About page on my blog. We nurtured ourselves on Valentine’s by avoiding the mainstream and enjoying a quiet evening at home. I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s too.
