Photo Challenge: Variations On a Theme

“What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space.” Erwin Schrodinger

In my case, I used the elements of these simple forms – square, cube, line and color – to produce logical systems. Most of these systems were finite; that is, they were complete using all possible variations. This kept them simple. Sol LeWitt

For this week’s photo challenge on creating variations on a theme, I’ve gone back to my favorite location – The Hudson River.  I’ve culled photos that show the river from different perspectives, seasons, and moods. Because I live near it, it is a place of exercise, respite and creative explorations for me. No matter the time of year, I always find aspects of it to photograph and the setting always warms my heart and calms my spirit. For a body of water that spans 315 miles (507km) and extends from the Adirondacks down to NYC and Jersey and eventually drains into the Atlantic, it always feels like my personal portion of the river and there is an intimacy that one develops over time with that river. Fishermen, sailors, the lovers of bodies of water would relate to this notion of a huge river feeling so personal… It offers much more on each visit and for that I am grateful.

I often use collages to show photos when I have a series and can’t make up my mind. The large/vertical photo was created for my Pinterest account and it features 3 pictures: The top photo is of the Hudson River looking south towards NYC and the George Washington Bridge. The middle photo was taken at the Hudson Park in Irvington, NY, and it shows a recent installation of a pole with May Peace Prevail on Earth written in three languages (also facing south).  The third and bottom photo is facing north, and it is of the old Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrytown. I will try and create a gallery of the photos I  chose and some of the ones I couldn’t use in the time given. I hope you are inspired by the Hudson River photos to get out there with your camera and find a favorite place and take photos of it year round… come back later for more!

This post was inspired by a prompt from WP Daily Post:  – Variations –  This week, show the same thing — an object, place, or person — presented in several different ways. This week, use your camera to discover the endless variety that one thing can contain. It can be a single photo featuring some visual play on repetition and variation — ducks in a pond, each swimming in a slightly different angle, or a wall of stained glass in a church, each panel echoing the other. You could also opt for a series of shots showing the same place, person, or object in slightly different light (literally or figuratively, as the case may be). If you’re not sure how to approach this topic, just let your daily life guide you: every day, you probably repeat several actions, movements, and rituals without even noticing. Choose one and show how even within this repetition, there’s a wide diversity of experience.
