There comes a time when people get tired of being pushed out of the glittering sunlight of life’s July and left standing amid the piercing chill of an alpine November. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968): This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of this great man of light. Even as the years pass us by and a new generation of Americans learn about his life and legacy, his light shines brighter. Why, some might wonder…? Because he spoke so eloquently about the discriminatory practices going on and he was fearless about shining a light on the atrocities of the day. He walked in that light and it continues to serve as a shining path for all of us to walk and be reminded that we must remain vigilant and stand up against all forms of oppression. When we turn a blind eye to one form of oppression, we encourage the perpetuation of others… When we remain silent about wrong doing and slough it off because we believe it has no impact on our lives, one day it will… think about it.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although I didn’t spend my formative years in the US, I was cognizant of the history of the Civil Right movement because my parents had books and talked about it with their friends. We also studied it in school and I remember thinking why anyone would want to deprive another of their basic fundamental rights to a decent quality of life. I tried to imagine how frightening it must have been for kids to live under such conditions and be attacked for wanting to attend a better school. Dr King, a father of four, envisioned a world where his kids and all kids would live amicably and he died holding firmly to that dream. While some might see our current local and global climate as a dream deferred, we must not give up hope. Start where you are and teach your children to walk in the light. Treating other humans with decency must begin with us.

Martin Luther King – I Have A Dream Speech – August 28, 1963

Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To walk in the light, the walls of hate, inequity and lies must be torn down in our homes first. People look at public acts of hatred with alarm and call for government interventions and laws to deal with them. What we often forget is that the private acts of hatred and terror precede what we eventually see in the public arena. The work must begin in our homes and our hearts.. that is where the poisoning begins. If we dont deal with the private, petty hatreds, our public displays of shock will not cure the problem. Dr King always spoke so powerfully and passionately about the struggles for equity and freedom, and he shone a bright, glaring light on it for good reason. So we would never forget. Even today, his message remains true. May we all find our way to that walkway and be a shining path for others to join. The culture of peace Dr King also spoke of is within reach. WE just have to step forward, embrace it and share it… Get motivated for good!

    I celebrated MLK today with my little boy by going to a parade with him downtown . We started going to the MLK parade 5 years ago and it has become our tradition….

    Such an incredible and inspiring man. I especially love this quote that you shared “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Regardless to what the challenges are that we face, be they social, physical, emotional, situation, etc. we can all use an outlook like this to help us keep moving forward as positive forces in this world.

    It is always inspiring to read about Martin Luther King Jr’s words to achieve peace and equality among men. This post is so timely. The world is full of hatred and it seems everyone is up on their toes fearful of a war to ensue. I know it is so far fetched, but I just home every leader in every country would just drop everything and let their citizens live in peace.

    I think my all-time favorite of his words is definitely this one: Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Love and kindness, gratitude and empowerment this is what our world needs more and more.

    This is one of the best posts I have ever read on the life & teachings of Dr. King. Living in Atlanta gives me the privilege of seeing the positivity of his works in everyday life. We must always remember those who have worked to make life better for everyone in our democracy. P.S. I’ve actually seen his hand written Noble Peace Prize speech.     Its true, we aren’t born hating, it’s learned. I hate that families raise kids to hate. That’s how it happens. I’m glad we have a day like this to remember because clearly we have not come as far as maybe some of us think we’ve come with racism. We need to do more and you are right it starts at home.

    What a beautifully written article, especially documenting the importance of Dr. King and the civil right’s movement. He meant a lot to everyone, especially the African American community who was on the receiving end, and still is sometimes on the receiving end, of injustice and oppression. I wish there was someone who was just as intelligent and eloquent as Dr. King that was around today. His time on Earth was so short, but I have learned not to put my trust in man, but put my trust in God.

    My children had off school for his birthday and it surprised me that they hadn’t fully understood the importance of who this man was. It was really a schock. I remember learning about him in school before and after his birthday came. So I had to dig into my memory and explain why we celebrate this day, why it isn’t just a day off school. What a perfect day to fall on a Monday, to really scream motivation to us.

    I hadn’t made the connection that it was 50 years since his passing. It’s remarkable how far he pushed our nation forward during his life. I hope he would be proud of the progress we’ve made, but I know we’ve got a long way to go to realize his dream.

    When you talk about the kids wanting to attend better school it brings to my mind the current situation with DACA and the millennials dealing with everything regarding immigration or whatnot. My favorite quote would be, “he was fearless about shining a light on the atrocities of the day.” I pray to be like this every day despite the scenario and try to pass that on to my daughter.

    This was very informing. Being in school for almost 21 years, the educational system doesn’t shed light on people of color. I think it’s important for people to know the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – he was a great man who has made a difference.

    My best friend when I moved to California was African American from Birmingham. And she told me she had never had a white friend before. I at first found that so odd. But then I thought of all that happened in Birmingham as her parents were coming of age. And then it made perfect sense. Martin Luther King Jr did so much in such a short time. It’s amazing to think of what he would have done had he been given more time.

    Unconditional love will have the final word. I absolutely love that. MLK was a very wise man and spoke very wise words. I wish more people seen life through his eyes and perspective. It would be a much friendlier place to live

    My mother grew up in Birmingham, Alabama during the 50s and 60s. She and her sisters participated in some of the marches, lunch counter sit-ins, and other protests during the time. It was scary but they felt they had to stand up for what was right — like Dr. King.

    I love MLK and his legacy is so inspiring and important. He wanted a world where children were judged by the quality of their character and not by the color of their skin. And this is what I teach my children too.
