Motivation Mondays: PRESCIENCE

11/12/2017

“Human vision cannot pierce the surrounding clouds to see where and how the path lies; human prescience cannot resolve the involved movements of the world, the interlaced mechanism of Providence, to know how one event is fitted to all … ” George Washington Howard

Motivation Mondays: PRESCIENCE

Motivation Mondays: PRESCIENCE

Definition of prescience: foreknowledge of events: divine omniscience, human anticipation of the course of events: foresight. Merriam-Webster
You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today. Abraham Lincoln
Happiness is not a brilliant climax to years of grim struggle and anxiety. It is a long succession of little decisions simply to be happy in the moment. J. Donald Walters
You can’t convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it’s based on a deep-seated need to believe. Dr Carl Sagan

How does Prescience operate in your life? What motivates our actions? Why do we choose certain actions/decisions over others? Do we have an intuitive urge that guides us in one direction over another or are all our decisions based on pure logic? I’ve been re-reading some of my books and posts on the subject of intuition and how they have played a role in certain decisions I’ve made. What has struck me even more than the actual intuitive, reflective, or prayerful decisions we all make is that the impact isn’t always what we anticipated or hoped for. Instead, in some of those decisive choices we made based on our sense of prescience, we had important life lessons and even challenges that presented themselves in our lives and we had to learn them. That said, honoring our intuition can save our life. It must not be taken lightly and we can develop it and become keenly attuned to its gifts.

I often ask people who live by five-year plans what helps them determine what steps they plan to take and how they will achieve them. Most say they have an inner knowing that helps them develop a trajectory of their future plans, goals and achievements. Others admit that they pin the horse blindly and hope it sticks. Then, there is that brave group of folks who trust their intuitive voice and live life by being present, engaged and resourceful. All have merit but which do you think has more gravitas? There is no wrong answer. We gravitate to a path that suits our personality and experiences. Yet, our intuitive spirit is alive in all of us and we can learn to harness its gifts so we can become acutely aware of shifts around us. Recently, I’ve been reading Gavin de Becker’s book, The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals that Protect Us From Violence, and with the holiday season on our doorsteps, we need to be even more vigilant about our activities and surroundings. This is not intended to scare you but to remind you that prescience is the foresight to make choices that are beneficial to us in so many ways. Be motivated to keep yourself and your loved ones safe and know that you have the intuitive power and skill to act wisely at all times.

Thoughtful for Winter’s future sorrow,
Its gloom and scarcity;
Prescient to-day, of want to-morrow,
Toiled quiet Memory.
‘Tis she that from each transient pleasure
Extracts a lasting good;
‘Tis she that finds, in summer, treasure
To serve for winter’s food.
And when Youth’s summer day is vanished,
And Age brings Winter’s stress,
Her stores, with hoarded sweets replenished,
Life’s evening hours will bless. Charlotte Bronte

We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us. John Culkin/ Marshall McLuhan
What we wish, we readily believe, and what we ourselves think, we imagine others think also. Julius Caesar
Science can only ascertain what is but not what should be, but beyond of its domain value, judgments of all kinds are necessary. Albert Einstein
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams.
There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time. Malcolm X

If you could foresee the outcome of all your actions, would you be mindful? While some of us like to think that human behavior is such a complex science that it would be dangerous to even assume that if we all had the gift of prescience, we’d act in beneficial ways to uplift humanity, it is imperative to listen to our inner guidance. Why, you might wonder? Because our intuition rises above the noise and judgements we often carry with us. When we enter a space and we feel the urge to leave, what is behind that prompting? What triggers our spirit to respond in a protective manner in seemingly ordinary situations?  We must pay attention to these promptings because they often come from a place deep in our soul and they are pulling us to pay attention to our surroundings and to respond with caution and wisdom.  Yes, we have other qualities and genetic markers that play a role in our choices and so we might still find ourselves leaning in the direction of Y, engaging in destructive or constructive behavior because of an inclination to do so. However, if we developed more self-awareness and an inner bellwether that guides our moral compass, we would probably choose a path that leads to X; we would learn that our renewed awareness and foresight will dictate an outcome that might not be entirely shape-shifting but will save our life.

The truth is that, even with knowledge of probable outcomes, some of us will go ahead and enter that relationship, take that job and respond to that annoying person in an expected way. Even with the gift of insight and precognition, many of us will still answer the call of our destiny and follow a path that is both familiar and predictable because it is what we know and how we have always responded to X. So, the point I am trying to make here is that we are creatures of habit, and viewing a TV screen with clear outcomes for choices we might make would not necessarily have us veer in a new direction. If anything, the stubborn goats among us might become determined to prove the whole thing is nonsense as they barrel ahead. Some of us will make poor choices even with clear indications that our choices might put our career and personal goals in peril… But we don’t have to surrender to our demons and let life happen to us. Stand up. Become aware. Embrace your intuition. Make friends with it. Be motivated to live your life fully and take charge of those foggy areas. We all have the ability to develop a keen intuitive awareness and choosing to let life happen to us is defeatist. Life is about becoming masterful over our successes and challenges and while we need both the dark times and the light moments to create balance and learn gratitude, we still have the right to CHOOSE.

Is there a way around this? Yes, embrace it. Kick back and enjoy a spa treatment, a facial or other beauty treatments to help calm you. Surprised?

Wherever you go, go with all your heart. Confucius
The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp. Terry Pratchett
There are boxers possessed of such remarkable intuition, such uncanny prescience, one would think they were somehow recalling their fights, not fighting them as we watch. Joyce Carol Oates
He grasped at a prescient feeling, akin to the dialectic of dreams, that this reunion could never come to pass, yet somehow—it most definitely would. Kenzaburo Oe

Is there a way to make our experience of prescience work for us? Is there a way around it? For starters, be present in your life. Become acutely aware of your interaction with others, pay attention to the unspoken messages you convey in those exchanges, and listen to that prescient small voice within. We can only hear it when we are still, calm, and centered. When we spend time rushing from place to place without stopping to catch our breath and get clear about our motivations, we become lost in the chaos of life and make quick choices.  To get clear about where we are and where we need to be demands time for reflection, time to pause, and time to practice listening to the still small voice that guides us all in all we do. As I suggested earlier, kick back and enjoy a spa treatment, a jaunt to your favorite hangout or try a facial or other beauty treatments to help calm you. Celebrate the life and body you inhabit.

Sunday was Human Rights Day and as I think about my fellow men and women who are challenged and voiceless, I am reminded to honor and appreciate my freedoms. Every act of gratitude enriches our lives and the lives of those we meet along the path of life.

WE take from life one little share,
And say that this shall be
A space, redeemed from toil and care,
From tears and sadness free.  Charlotte Bronte

Is there ever a way to tell what will happen tomorrow? I’m not sure but what I’m sure about is that our actions will affect our future and that’s something that we should definitely think about before we decide on something. It might be that other will react differently if they know the outcome but it’s also human to follow what we’re feeling as well.

    • 12/12/2017 2:19 am

True… even if all the information were presented to us, we might not follow the path of least resistance because human curiosity is a very powerful trait…. and most like a dare.

This was really interesting and the part where you have asked people who made 5 year plans what drives them towards accomplishing their goals made me think. I never made such big plans and it makes me wonder what drives people to make them. I am the opposite, I live by the moment and take opportunities as they come so it’s hard to make a plan and decide which year I will buy a house or which year I will have a child, if that makes sense….

    Food for thought…
Well, prescience is not something i have thought about too much. I am trying to be in the here and now as good as possible but of course I do try to play the chess game in my mind, to control the outcome of my path in this life in the future.

This is definitely a very important thing. When I plan on my future what I hope happens and what actually happens are sometimes two very different things. Sometimes you need to learn to go with the flow another times you need to stand your ground and find your way back.

Great insight, but I was struck by this question:
If you could foresee the outcome of all your actions, would you be mindful?
I think that, in my case, I would be so struck with all the possible outcomes, I would be frozen. That’s why “Practice being present” is almost a mantra in my life.

  10. 12/12/2017 7:54 am

Even if I knew in advance what my action would acquire I’d still take the time to think about my actions. Even if I had all the information available to me, doesn’t mean I would still take the path that’s in front of me, we all have the ability to change our minds.

I don’t think I’d want to see the outcome of future decisions. Somethings go wrong in life *raises and and nods frantically* I’ve made decisions that have not been the wisest but rather than regret them I embrace them and learn from them. I like what you said in your comment above too, we are a curious species so fact and knowledge doesn’t always seem logical.

I would guess the second group because I feel many other things fall into our lives to change up that 5 years, however, if someone stuck to the desire of having those things come to be it would be much more likely. Examples: Working hard to try to make that plan come to be fulfilled. Staying single if that made the chances higher. Not having children if that were to interrupt the plan. Continuing their education to help bring about that plan.

It’s hard to say whether we would be more proactive if we knew exactly what was going to happen with each decision we make. I think I would have a lot of anxiety if I knew the good or bad that was coming with each choice I made. I think as humans we have an incredible ability to tap into our intuition and that’s what keeps us good and doing good (for the most part at least).

I love how powerful you made your message here. Being mindful is quite a difficult task for some. If we could see the outcome of our future achievements, would we remain humble within ourselves? It’s hard to predict. Being in the moment can often be an interesting insight. To love each small moment as it passing can be soothing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and providing a list of amazing motivational Mondays.

The skill to know what will happen in the future is scary. Well, for me it is. I usually take one day at a time and not worry about the future, which is pointless really. We should be in the present, savor every minute and make it count. The future can take care of itself. I would rather worry about my today than exert all my effort focusing on something that has yet to be.

    • 17/12/2017 11:24 pm

And so it is with CHOICE… you get to choose. Your intuition is beyond discussions of past and future. It is very much in the present and the NOW!

It’s so mind boggling to consider how things could and would have turned out if we did x,y,or z. And how they might still turn out if we choose one path or another. But for sure our actions and decisions affect the future in some way or another. And for sure life is short, so yes…be present in the moment and enjoy what is in front of us right now.

Your posts are always so thought provoking, I always read and then think for sometime, you always have some critical realities of life which I might not have taken out time to think about. Prescience is one those topics. I agree with you, there might not be a wrong or right decision, it is based on the our previous experience and situation, and sometimes intuition which makes us follow a path.

True… It takes effort and we owe it to ourselves to make the connection and choice to be present and not always in a hurry to get to the next thing.
      What’s the rush?
Because we rush, most don’t read.
Because we rush, most don’t see.
Because we rush, most don’t hear or think or choose wisely.

In my view, whatever we do in our life. We are responsible. There is no one else responsible for our deed. Even if someone is; we can’t have one answer. As Lord Mahadev (Hindu god) once said, and I quote,” I have given free will to each and every one of you, it is you who choose what to do. and what you choose will be the reason for your karma”.

You made my day. thankyou. I am blessed. Each and every people are talking the same, just words changes. But the message remains the same.

Not knowing what lies ahead is pretty scary and I think that’s why our decisions are more careful than getting the chance to see what’s in store for us in the future. I think reflecting on where we are now and where we want to be helps us make better decisions as well. Such a lovely message.

Wow, I think this is a very difficult subject because there are so many different points of view about it. You talk about prescience and intuition. But I am more or less convinced (yes, more or less, as my convictions evolve) that it is all about cognition economy. You can foresee based on your previous experience, on your atavic (or some prefer to call “genetic” experience) or on the experience transmitted by others. You don’t need to put your hand over a flame to know your flesh will burn. But you need to have yourself burnt once to know what it will actually feel like. I mean there is only so much you can actually foresee. There is evidence that some people are better at foreseeing in their lives because they are better at “guessing” the reactions of others and the consequences of their acts. So, there is a natural predisposition for some people, as some people are naturally good singers or fast runners, others are good foreseers.
