Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

What does LOYALTY mean to you? When I was a child, I looked to my parents and my extended family for succor. Because they were there for me on a regular basis, I knew, implicitly, that all my needs were going to be met. Every day, without fail, I was cared for, fed, clothed, provided with shelter, and sent to school to broaden my mind and learn new things. The trust I held for my family, and this included my siblings, uncles and aunts, was built on a foundation of actions that were consistent and loyal. So when we talk about the development of loyalty between family, friends, co-workers and all sorts of associations we build in our lifetime, we must remember that loyalty is never achieved overnight. It is neither feigned nor forced.

When seemingly solid relationships break down, it is often because of indiscretions, a betrayal of trust or a loss of loyalty and affection for each other. If we are to make our relationships successful, we have to be open to the warts-and-all world of human interaction and stay in communication with each other. Even siblings quibble over slights; what often holds the family bond together is the realization that the relationship has a shared history and that history holds many precious memories of trust, discretion and love. We, in turn, return to those memories and work at rebuilding our family ties. If you are motivated to rebuild/build relationships that matter, you must start from a foundation of consistent loyalty, true friendship and lasting trust. It is not an overnight affair. It takes time and holds tremendous value.

A Story: BigMouth Fox by Pedro Pablo Sacristán
Penguin, Reindeer and Fox were great friends. One day, Penguin and Reindeer found a load of fruit, and decided to keep it a secret. On the way, they met Fox, who seeing them so happy, asked them why. They told him they couldn’t say, because it was a secret, but Fox asked them to trust him, so they told him about the fruit.
When they arrived at the village, Fox forgot about his promise, and told everyone. When Penguin and Reindeer returned to the place where they had found the fruit, the animals of the village had already been there and eaten it all.
That same day, Penguin and Reindeer found another place full of food, and the same thing happened again with Fox. Angered by these betrayals, they decided to teach Fox a lesson. The next day they told Fox that they had found a lake so full of fish that no effort was needed to catch them. Fox again told everyone in the village about this. The next day, Fox came by, covered in cuts and bruises. After telling all the animals about the lake full of fish, everyone, including even the polar bears, had gone there. But, not finding anything, they felt deceived, and had given Fox a good beating.
Fox learned that keeping people’s trust is very important, and that to get it in the first place you have to earn it with loyalty and always keeping your word.
Penguin and Reindeer devised another trick for Fox but, as he was no longer a bigmouth, he did not betray them, and Penguin and Reindeer regained their faith in Fox, thus forgiving him.

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

What aspect of LOYALTY sustains our relationships/friendships? Recently, a dear friend and I were reminiscing over our long and lasting friendship. We talked about the challenging times and the happy, joyful times we have shared over many years. One thing that has stood out for us in our friendship has always been our refusal to listen to gossip about each other. If you’ve lived long enough, you’d know that a fiery end to a friendship can begin with hurtful gossip so, we must be mindful about what we say to others and what we hear in return. You cannot be a true friend if you spend time saying nasty things about your friends behind their backs… If you are troubled by their behavior, have a face to face powwow and find a healthier way to mend those fences. When we are motivated by the right reasons to speak to our close and loved ones, we must be open to hear what we have done wrong too. It’s a two way street. Loyalty is not something we can claim immediately. Overnight won’t cut it. It has to be tested in the fire of life’s challenges and sharpened by the ups and downs of life events. Like Oprah said, you have to be willing to ride the bus with me when the limo varnishes… that is loyalty.

A Story: Where Did The Voices Go? by Pedro Pablo Sacristán
There was once a little boy who told tales about absolutely everything. Whenever anyone asked who had done this, or who had said that, the little boy jumped up and shouted out the guilty person’s name.
At his school the children ended up never speaking to each other; they were tired of the little boy using their words to tell tales. Because they no longer spoke, the children started to lose their voices, until no one could say anything at all.
This made things very boring for the little boy. He was left on his own, feeling lonely, and the others resented him for being the cause of everyone losing their voice…
Wondering what he could do to solve the problem, it occurred to him that he could become the one who asks the questions, and leaves them unanswered. This plan worked, and now that there were so many questions needing an answer, everyone’s voices gradually started working again. Even better, people became friendlier towards him for having cured them.
And so it was that he learned not to tell tales about everything. He realized it was much more fun to let others speak for themselves.
Moral: Loyalty, Friendship, the pain of Gossip

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

Motivation Mondays: LOYALTY

How do we learn/develop LOYALTY? Some of my memories of my Dad revolve around his friendships; both his business and personal relationships.  What I learned from an early age is that, for a relationship to thrive, your word must be your bond. Dad had long and trusting friendships and partnerships and he was always speaking highly of them and made every effort to support their goals and dreams. He did the same for us kids and for my extended family members and that is the truest sign of loyalty. If the only time we show loyalty is when we want something, we are being hypocritical and dishonest. For people who trade their friendships and relationships for trinkets, it does catch up with them. Over time, people can decipher a fake friendship and the rest is what leads to the abandonment of such connections. Loyalty is highly valued even when we don’t talk about it, hence, we must be vigilant about protecting our relationships and honoring the special bond we share. It will last a lifetime if nurtured. What are your experiences of loyalty? How has it manifested in your life? Come back for more on the subject.

A Story: The Fairy and the Shadow by Pedro Pablo Sacristán
A long, long time ago, before people and their cities filled the Earth, even before many things even had a name, there was a mysterious place that was guarded by the Fairy of the Lake. Fair and generous, each of her followers were ever willing to serve her. There was a time in which some evil beings threatened the lake and its surrounding forests, and the fairy’s followers joined her on a dangerous journey across rivers, swamps and deserts in search of the Crystal Stone, their only hope of being saved.
The fairy warned them of the dangers and difficulties that lay ahead, of how hard it would be to endure the whole journey, but none of her followers were afraid. They all promised to accompany her to wherever it was needed, and that same day the fairy and her fifty most loyal followers set out on their journey.
As it turned out, the voyage was even harder and more terrible than the fairy had imagined and warned them about. They were met by terrifying beasts. They had to march day and night, lost in deserts, hungry and thirsty. Faced by such adversity, many followers lost heart and abandoned the quest. Finally, only one remained, and his name was Shadow.
Shadow was by no means the bravest, he was not the best fighter, nor was he the most quick-witted or the most fun. However, what he did do was stay loyal to the fairy, right to the very end. Whenever the fairy asked Shadow why he had not done as the others and simply abandoned her, Shadow would always say, ‘I told you I would follow you in spite of all difficulties, and that is what I am doing. I am not going to turn my back on you just because the journey has been hard.’
Thanks to her loyal Shadow, the fairy finally managed to find the Crystal Stone. Unfortunately, there was a monster guarding the stone, and this monster was not about to give up the stone easily. At this, Shadow, in a final act of loyalty, offered himself in exchange for the stone. The monster accepted, and so Shadow spent the rest of his days in the monster’s service.
The powerful magic of the Crystal Stone meant that the fairy could return to the lake and make the evil beings disappear. But every night she would cry at the absence of her loyal Shadow, because from Shadow’s act of self-sacrifice had arisen a love stronger than any other.
And in memory of Shadow, and to show everyone the value of loyalty and commitment, the fairy presented every being on Earth with its own shadow during the day; but when nighttime comes all these shadows travel to the lake, to spend time with the sad fairy, and to try to console her for her loss.

Loyalty is a pretty big thing to give and receive. When I hear of the word all that comes to mind is the relationship between husband and wife where both parties should practice in order to make the relationship work.

You know, I actually had to read that quote about loyalty by Mark Twain three times before it really sunk in. How profound. It really got the message across. Not only should we value loyalty but we should also make sure that our loyalty is not misplaced or blind. For me my biggest role models on what loyalty means would probably be our fur babies. They always stick by you no matter what. Kinda like the fairy and her shadow

Loyalty to me means someone who has my best interest at heart. They don’t need to always be on my side or choose the same path as me but just need to want the best for me.

You know I have always wondered about what I really think about ‘loyalty’ – While I do appreciate the emotion and the unconditional love behind it but I always want to be on the side of what I believe is correct and not let myself be influenced by loyalty.

I learned loyalty from my dad, too 🙂 He was pretty much always on my side when things got hard; I knew if I ever shared with him my struggles, he would be praying for me and be rooting for me. He never made me feel like it was all my fault or that I just needed to suck it up. I really appreciate him for that.

Loyalty is something I think I often forget about (I am insanely loyal) and it always takes me back when people do not act in the same way. Its something I assume everyone has and that comes natural to every person, this has landed me in awkward situations before because I trust until I am given a reason not to. I think you are right, I think we develope the ideals of trust at an early age and through our parents and their experiences!

    • 22/10/2017 11:28 am

We do. I write about it as a topic but it is an inherent quality ingrained in some and not in others. We can work at it but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. I agree.

Another excellent post! 🙂 I first learned about loyalty and dedication from my parents, especially my Dad. No matter what came our way as a family while growing up, my Dad always remained loyal to God, to my Mom, to us kids, and to other family members and friends. He was really an ideal role model and the epitome of loyalty, right up to his imminent death due to lymphoma. Before he lapsed into a coma, he cautioned all of us not to be angry with God, but to prepare to meet Him ourselves some day – and look forward to some day being reunited with Dad.

    • 22/10/2017 11:26 am

Loyalty can often be a hard thing to obtain and when you do and something like a solid friendship breaks down it can make you question yourself. For me loyalty is someone who would go to the ends of the earth to support you no matter what.

    • 22/10/2017 11:24 am

Rebuilding after a relationship breaks down is really hard for most people to understand. Those on the outside who don’t get it often just expect the person who is hurt to flip a switch and be “OK” again. Sadly it’s not that simple.

Loyalty is so incredibly important in every relationship we have! I loved the little stories and their morals.

I’ve chosen the loyalty topic, cause it intringued me at the very first word, it’s normal to have loyalty to our parents since they were the first ones who were there for us, but there’s always a “but” I have experience where one of my relative committed a crime, I was tangled between being loyal to my family relatives for defending a member or loyal to my own principle, I ended up hating the person, cause of whatever blood bond we have that member still did a wrong thing against law.

    • 22/10/2017 11:14 am

True. They tarnished that bond and you were drawn into a moral dilemma. It is never easy. I hope you made a decision that spoke to your heart.

I feel that loyalty is an integral component of any healthy and successful relationship. Always give your 100% to any relationship and if you’re not getting that 100% from the other person, just move away! I also liked the story by Pedro Pablo Sacristán!

    • 22/10/2017 11:12 am

Precisely… when the very bond that held it together is broken, it takes a lot of effort to rebuild it. However, both parties must agree to mend those fences.

Such an inspiring post! Loyalty is so important in life. When it comes to friends, I always think it’s better to have a handful of really loyal ones than a whole room of acquaintances! Love your post as usual. Thank you so much for sharing x

    • 22/10/2017 11:13 am

I say that to my kids all the time… My dad used to say that all we need are a handful of loyal friends in this lifetime… the rest we can appreciate who who they are.

This is so true. I never stopped to think about it but loyalty really does take time to build up, just like trust. It isn’t built overnight. I guess that’s a good thing for us humans though, to see the proof first before we trust or become loyal.

I never would have thought of a knot to be a symbol for loyalty, but you are right on point. A knot is security we can count on, just like loyalty of people we trust.

What an amazing read. Loved the story “WHere did the voices go?’ It is true loyalty comes when there are faith and love. It’s a gradual process. And the best thing you mentioned about loss of faith is the gossips that go around. We should get up from a place where there are unnecessary gossips and backbiting.

    • 22/10/2017 11:10 am

True. We need to grow up to the meaning and value of our friendships. Loyalty demands that level of trust and respect.

Loyalty is certainly the most important aspect of a relationship! There’s nothing without trust, and it’s not just in romantic relationships but even with friends. Just like you say, refusing to listen to any gossip about your friend, clearly shows you respect them and they can trust you on that, making them secure in your relationship, Good points here.

Loyalty should come naturally if you love and respect the person you are being loyal to. You want to be there for them through the good times and the bad time because you care about them. My father taught me this, I watched him with my mother. He adored her and it showed. I feel I am the say way, I am loyal to those that mean something to me, I know and trust and I truly care about them

I think loyalty is beautiful but tricky. To me it is trust, if you can trust, you have the capacity to become loyal, but if you don’t have trust there’s no loyalty. You can trust without being loyal, but you cannot be loyal if you do not have trust. Loyalty to me is a second level commitment, it takes trust to the next level.

loyalty is hugely important to me. My mother says the my dad and his family are loyal to a fault. Which I always thought was silly, that you can’t be faulted for being loyal. But it’s true. Loyalty can and sometimes should be lost if someone betrays that strict loyalty.

Loyalty is a hard one. I think for my it really pertains most to people, as I don’t think it is worth being loyal to brands or companies. When it comes to people, it is all about being there for them- that solid rock of support and love.

I do believe that loyalty in relationships doesnt just come from not cheating. Loyalty also needs to be in the vows that are taken together when getting married. If the general lifestyle doesnt have the loyalty essence then the relationship loses its charm!

It is funny that I see this post today. Last night, my husband and I discussed loyalty. In my eyes and experience, it has been a curse. I find myself hurt because of it far too often. I’m loyal to those I love and care for, and often, that trust I have in someone has been broken. Sometimes to the point of being irreparable. It drives me sometimes to want to do things that are not called for, but as a loyal friend or family member, I want to do. It can be a powerful force.
