International Day of the Girl Child: EmPOWER Girls 2017
This year, on the International Day of the Girl Child, we are focused on how to ‘EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises’. Throughout 2017 we have seen growing conflict, instability and inequality, with 128.6 million people this year expected to need humanitarian assistance due to security threats, climate change and poverty. More than three-quarters of those who have become refugees or who are displaced from their homes, are women and children [1]. Today is the International Day of the Girl Child and it is imperative that we join forces to celebrate our collective effort at ensuring that girls and women are encouraged to contribute equally around the world. This year, the UN theme is EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises. A corresponding theme is Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030. Since the genesis of the first celebration of the Girl Child in 2012, the United Nations Organization and many other organizations have devoted time and resources to close the gender inequality gap. This day not only celebrates the need to EmPower our daughters, it also brings awareness to other issues that impact the lives of girls/women around the world.
What other issues impact the lives of our 1.1 Billion girls globally? They include issues of access to quality education, protection from FGM/Female Genital Mutilation, Assistance/Education in crisis areas, an end to child marriages through empowerment, an end to sex trafficking/ sexual violence against children, access to clean/safe water, eradication of gender based stereotypes, an end to modern day slavery, end to nutrition ill-health and reduction in HIV exposure, protection from all forms of discrimination, legal rights, medical care, and an end to violence against women. If you stop to think about the enormous effort that it will take to fully address a single issue listed above, then it becomes apparent that we need maximum involvement in even the most basic/fundamental way; we need all hands on deck.

EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises: The world’s 1.1 billion girls are a source of power, energy, and creativity – and the millions of girls in emergencies are no exception. This year’s International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11 marks the beginning of a year-long effort to spur global attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face before, during, and after crises. What issues matter to you and your loved ones? Since women and girls represent half the population of the world, issues that affect our gender in other parts of the world, can have a direct impact on our lives. When one set of girls are denied access to opportunities that will empower and embolden them to achieve, we limit our sphere of influence and success. With girls/women representing 3/4 of the refugees in the world, over 700+ million with experience of childhood marriages, a high percentage denied schooling, unequal treatment in the job market and the denial of access to other opportunities, we have a lot that we must fight for before, during and after the many crises we experience around the world.
Reading through the data gathered here on this subject, the statistics are sobering. Did you know that 18.6 million women and girls live with HIV today? Did you know that human trafficking and sexual exploitation is a $99B dollar enterprise and that 96% of the victims are women/girls? Did you know that 1 in 3 girls/women around the world will experience physical and/or sexual violence – two forms of gender-based violence (GBV) – in her lifetime? If you have a mother, sister, daughter, female friend, this information and so much more ought to outrage you into action. With 1.1 billion girls in the world, we can no longer afford to be casual about these matters. Join IN!

Female empowerment is not an anomaly and we can all do more. We can support the various initiatives that encourage gender equity by educating ourselves and others about the merits of encouraging all our children to receive an education. When girls are included in the conversation of a nation’s prosperity goals, everyone benefits. As a mother, I know that because my daughters were able to go to college and find jobs in their fields of interest, they will contribute their skills to society and be able to make choices freely. This year, the UN theme for International Day of the Girl (11 October) is ‘EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises’ One of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to support gender equality globally, and we can only achieve that goal if we support programs and demand laws that lift barriers to female empowerment.
How Can we to Support/Celebrate International Day of the Girl Child? We can support equal-pay-for-equal-work in our places of work, and encourage our daughters to venture into fields that were once dominated by males. Globally, we can support organizations that fight to increase female education and socioeconomic participation, and make a commitment to practice what we preach in our homes. We can choose to wear blinders or make a concerted commitment to encourage our daughters, sisters, and other females to reach for their dreams. We can do our part by sharing information on data and programs that help build gender equity, that offer opportunities for girls to get an education, and that help them to become fully vested in participating in building their communities. It is an arduous but not an impossible task. It will take our commitment to reach that goal. This is my first time learning about International Day of the Girl Child. It is so important for girls to feel empowered and everyone should have equal opportunities.
I have met few people across the globe who are well educated but still think if a girl attending school or a lady going to the office is not acceptable.
I just hope and pray that more people will commit to investing in livelihood activities, education, and skills training for young women around the world who are facing a crises. Let’s remind every girl we encounter that they matter, they are powerful and they’re an integral part of our future.
I cannot wait for the day when we do not need “a day” and life is normal for all genders and people.
I think that there are too many places on this Earth where women and girls are seen just as housewives and mothers and not given a chance to follow their dreams. There are too many places where women have no rights just because of gender. And I do hope that there will be a time when there will be equality in the world and this kind of campaigns are helping more and more people to open their minds.

Although gender equality is better in the U.S then it used to be it is still not idea and in many other countries there has still not been improvement. It makes me sad that people would choose boys over girls. Thank for for supporting girls and women
Once again another very thought provoking post. I think sometimes we can easily forget how lucky we are and what some poor girls go through, thats why its important we stick together because we are all the same deep down – if that makes sense? Well done on making such valid points for concern and for raising awareness of some of the horrors women and girls have to face daily.
If we want our world to be a better place for everyone, we need to empower our girls and other women’s in our lives! We need to take a stand on gender diversity and equal wages at our workplace! Truly amazing photographs you have here. You’re right, there shouldn’t be any shame in getting an education and being an empowered woman. It saddens me that in some countries, women do not have access to sanitary pads, and must stay home from school when menstruating.

Its great that this day exists. There is so much inequality in the world even today. Im impressed the UN are doing something about it too. Gender inequality is not good at all.
There are so many ways in which to help and EmPower girls it is overwhelming where to start. Even though or maybe because of having psycho social issues of my own I want to help always, so I chose one area to concentrate on for the world and then everyday work on empowering my granddaughters. I would like to see poverty, rape culture and pay equality to name a few, absent from their future.
I read an article today about refugees (mostly women) from Myramar now in Bangladesh camps and their stories brought me to tears. What these women endure is atrocious. Another thing we can do is get out politicians to stop sending our money to these countries unless they change their treatment of women, children, poor, and stop ethnic cleansing.
What an awesome day. I am raising three daughters and I certainly want things to change for women in the meantime. I encourage them to pursue their dreams with all their might. My oldest wants to be brain surgeon. My middle girl wants to cure cancer. My youngest wants to dress up, lol. She wants to be a fashion blogger.
I think it’s an amazing initiative. Girls deserve to reach their dreams without anyone getting in their way. We must empower them and give them the tools and the knowledge that they need. This is such a nice thing to do to help give them a brighter future.

I saw this topic first on instagram with a video and I am loving the awareness that is being brought to this matter. Using Beyonce song is a catchy because it will hopefully get others to become more aware and help little girls and women to have freedom and choices.
I am not a feminist and I feel empowerment is given via education and opportunities no matter the gender, race or origin. This world that we are living that promotes division is not conducive to peace. I am a woman and a minority but I feel I have gotten so many opportunities to be successful because of hard work and pursuing my dreams. As well as my family given the chance to have a good education.

Having worked in a few developing countries, I find that in poorer economies women are doing almost all the work, but little share of the power, and even culturally have been taught that there’s nothing wrong with that (and in richer economies, just the opposite, more equal share and more equal power). The message of girl empowerment, and women empowerment, is such an important one in the world.

World has changed but still there are many places who doesn’t want to change or the change, education or technology hasn’t approached to them. The women should be educated because if they are educated only then the new generation will walk with time.

You’re right about the numbers sounding somber. But the silver lining is if the world’s women work together, we can enact some real change. With the number of national crises the past few months, I think I’ll focus my efforts on these girls and restoring their childhoods as much as possible. Our California wildfires are still raging, and the number of people reported missing is heartbreaking.
I love the concept of emPOWER girls. The disparity between the genders is such a real world problem. Women in the Western world deal with lower pay and sexual harassment. In other parts of the world, they don’t even have access to education. And we women are really the ones who need to take responsibility for lifting each other up.
Unfortunately I can not control what goes on in other countries. I can help with making the facts known. Until cultural Chang’s which is almost impossible to accomplish some women in some countries will be treated as second class citizens or worse.
Despite interesting child policies, I think there are more than 1.1 Billion women in the world, although I suppose there only may be that amount of girls. And we do need to do what we can to protect them and lift them up.

International Day of the Child Girl, a meaningful day. In our place it is not so important, I want it to be a big day to show the equality of the girls.
I love that women are uniting across the globe to inspire and motivate each other. Even though times have changed, we should stand up for things that we believe in.
I remember meeting a freed sex slave in New York that had been trafficked there from Ukraine. Even after everything she had gone through she was kind, strong and determined to help others escape that life.

It’s wonderful to know that there is a day to celebrate girl child. Being born in India where a girl child was treated as a burden in some areas. I have seen and been a part of initiatives where they go to rural areas and educate women and families to send their girl child to school. Education makes a lot of difference. I like that there is a day that reminds us to empower the girls. However, in the most country in the world, girls still be the number two after men.
I teach at an all-girls school and stress why it’s important to share your voice and take a stand to my students. I want them to graduate feeling empowered and understanding why they need to speak up for others who don’t have the same opportunities as them.

I didn’t really see the point of having women not go to school in the older days. Gender-based violence should be put down. Any form of violence should not exist actually.

I didn’t celebrate, I would have but I never knew there was a day dedicated to it. But I guess I celebrate everyday when I raise my 3 daughters to know they can be and do anything that their brother or father can do. And just because a girl hasn’t done it yet doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

When girls succeed, the community is always better. Those numbers for child marriage are quite staggering. I’m glad this day exists to raise awareness.
Just the other day I was telling my husband how i wanted to support girls in certain areas by giving them menstrual pads. He didn’t realized that because of their periods they could miss a lot of school and thus being under educated. This is isn’t their fault and even thought there are other issues I wish i could do more, even if it is just finding a way to get them that help.
It’s devastating to read about how many girls get married before 18. We need to continue advocating for education for girls and women everywhere.
For some reason I didn’t even realize that I missed national Day of girl child! I think that we should definitely support girls in whatever it is they want to do. This is a wonderful idea and that puts reminder in the forefront of her mind to leader girls in the wheeze didn’t want to go.
No, I didn’t celebrate the day because I didn’t realize when it was! I have to say I’ve been impressed with Malala ever since I heard her story following the attack that nearly killed her. The way she fought back against the odds, recovered, and continues to fearlessly advance the idea of education for all females is truly inspiring–especially since I’ve had the opportunity to advance to a doctorate myself as a 59-year-old woman!

I just finished a book called “Lean In” and it is primarily about women in the workplace and fighting for equal pay. Unfortunately the gender gap is still a thing that exists but hopefully we women can overcome it!

A lot needs to be done in this field. There are lots of crimes and atrocities happening against them. Education, Self-defense and parents support can do wonders.
I came from a family of mostly girls and growing up with them, I can see that girls / young women are really such a powerful force to reckon with. Girls, from young age, should be guided, taught and inspired well so they grow up to be an inspiration to the next younger generation.
I love that you touched on some very harsh realities the girls face around the world including but not limited to female mutilation, equal access, etc. It’s sad we have to still address these in 2017.

I love this post, and I too, think it’s so crucial to empower young girls. In doing so, we are building up a stronger generation of future leaders, social justice warriors, and friends.

Women Empowerment is such a great way of taking things forward and making the world a better place.
Empowering girls around the world is one of the most important tasks we could ever accomplish. I so much support the organizations who do it.
I am always saddened by the despair girls and women must feel around the world from the horrendous conditions they must endure. The International Day of the Girl Child is a great way to alert others to their plight.

All in to the International Day of the Girl, girls are so blessed that they have so much love and caring from so many more people than before.
I never thought that we celebrating International Day of Girl Child. This only shows the imporatnce of women empowerment. And glad that there are more and more people raising awareness about this.
I definitely think we need to promote more places around the globe making a world more hospitable for girls and women, putting them on an equal footing with men. Unfortunately, many places have systems of corruption and systemic sexism which are hard to break right now because they have religious components or historical problems. And war torn countries have issues promoting that as well unfortunately. We do need to do what we can though.
It is every citizen and every human’s responsibility to save and empower a girl child. We have been supressed enough. I too come from a society where it’s a shame for a girl to ‘learn too much’. I am glad my parents thought differently. But not every girl is that lucky. Thankful to you for sharing such a post to raise awareness.

Yes, little girls have to be protected and they should be sheltered from now… not because they are dainty and weak, but because the society is oppressive of women and this mistreatment begins early on in a woman’s life.

Being the mother of a daughter, I couldn’t agree more. We think we came so far when it comes to equality, however, there is still such a long way to go.
Yes to this! It is our duty to lift girls up and provide opportunity for girls all around the world. We still have a long way to go globally.
It’s so important to recognize the differences between how boys and girls are treated. I have two young boys, but I am trying to raise them to know that girls are their equals in every aspect. I may not be able to do a whole lot, but that’s what I can do right now.
Such an important day to remember and to take action for the girls of the world. They are still limited by so much out there, we need to change that!
Should be an International year of the girl, not just a day! But glad they have at least that. Sobering statistics indeed. If we all did a little better the world would be much better off and those stats would positively go down, helping so many girls.
This is very important, to teach our girls (and boys!) about empowerment and how to use it in ways that will benefit them and not harm others. All of these starts at home.

I wish I had someone who empowered me when I was younger. I do it so much now for my stepdaughter she probably gets annoyed hearing it, but its true.
