Motivation Mondays: SAILING

Motivation Mondays: Sailing Through Turbulent Seas

If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
My goal in sailing isn’t to be brilliant or flashy in individual races, just to be consistent over the long run. Dennis Conner
Aside from what it teaches you, there is simply the indescribable degree of peace that can be achieved on a sailing vessel at sea. I guess a combination of hard work and the seemingly infinite expanse of the sea – the profound solitude – that does it for me. Billy Campbell

Motivation Mondays: Sailing Through Turbulent Seas When you think of SAILING, what comes to mind? I think of the calm, lilting rides, the storms that come into our lives, and how we weather the storms or handle them. Do we sail close to the wind, become unmoored or do we clear the decks or use a different tack to get us back into plain sailing? Sailing is just a metaphor for life’s unpredictable journey. Given the terrible events that have occurred around the world this year, both man-made and mother nature’s work, we couldn’t possibly think of plain and smooth sailing as the theme but, we can and must aim for ways to get there amid the chaos and catastrophe. Initially, I had a different title for the post, it was Smooth Sailing, then Set Your Sails and finally, I settled on plain and simple – SAILING. Why? Because throughout our lifetime, we experience the shifting winds of storms, calm oceans and turbulence that nudge us to steady our sails, stay strong, even turn direction but, never give up hope. We set our sails in many moods and experiences so, starting with the basic script made more sense.

Turn Within and lift Others Up: With all the turbulence in our world today, we need to not forget that we have tools to help us stay calm in turbulence, tools to help us wash ourselves in the calming waves that come after a fierce storm, and that the cleansing breeze and expansive ocean are reminders that we must use our vast resources to help those affected by the rough and turbulent storms. As I reflect on the start of fall and the crashing waves and destructive events around us, I turn within to that place of calm and compassion and send out wishes for healing to our world. To the families of victims of the Las Vegas tragedy…. my heartfelt condolences sent.

Oh Sea – Poem by Ernestine Northover via poemhunter.com
Oh Sea, why do you deliberately pound the rocks along the bay,
Sending showers of white foam up, in a cascade of spray,
Can you not cease your travels, churning incessantly,
Surging back and forth, always longing to be free.

Oh Sea, why do you keep hold of such impatience, in your hands,
Forever turning restless, racing for the sands,
Then teetering up the shingle, and rushing back again,
Shifting shells and pebbles, and layers of sandy grain.

Oh Sea, why draw it all towards you, like some almighty tongue,
Devouring it in mouthfuls, then spewing it among
The coves, caves and crevices, which are found along the cliffs,
Dispersing all the creatures, living in the rifts.

Oh Sea, you are gigantic, so powerful and so wild,
And yet at times you’re gentle, just like a little child,
You command our admiration, your vastness is immense,
But you are so unpredictable, your energy intense. Cont’d below

“He who lets the sea lull him into a sense of security is in very grave danger.” Hammond Innes

Motivation Mondays: Sailing Through Turbulent Seas

Motivation Mondays: Sailing Through Turbulent Seas

What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery, and without it, all the rest are not only useless, but disastrous. Thomas Merton
The effect of sailing is produced by a judicious arrangement of the sails to the direction of the wind. William Falconer

What Can We do in Times of Stormy Turbulence? It is imperative to focus on holding it together by aligning ourselves with others who strengthen and encourage us through hard times. Instead of feeding off any form of hysteria, this is a good time to focus on staying calm and connecting with positive and proactive folks who want to offer help to those hurting. It is often easier to sit and allow fear and feelings of doom and despair to overtake us but, we can’t be of help to the suffering until we strengthen ourselves within and reach out a helping hand, a kind word, information where it is needed, and good will and compassion to all others in pain.  As I look around me and contemplate the natural and unnatural disasters that the world has seen this year, I feel within my spirit that we must not avert our eyes and leave it to others to take up the mantle. We can help in even the smallest way through our concern, contributions and compassion.

In turbulent times, start with a spirit of gratitude and a motivated spirit to turn your sails around. Instead of whining about the usual things that we think we need, let’s stop and think about the hurricane and earthquake survivors and their needs. It is enervating to keep complaining about our  wants when there are folks out there who have desperate needs that are not being met. How can we help? What can we do differently? Again, we can start with a spirit of gratitude and a motivated spirit to turn our sails around and sail in the direction of grace and goodwill towards others.

Poem Cont’d above
Oh Sea, you are the great expanse, of the oceans of the world,
We treat you with respect, when your anger is unfurled,
Your boundless depths are fathomless, holding secrets still,
Your waters are so mercurial, subject to your will.

Oh Sea, It is a pleasure when your tides flow, to and fro,
To sit and watch the sunsets, over waters all aglow,
To know your restless feelings, to accept your endless task,
And yet to try and understand, what you keep behind your mask

Oh Sea, who owns the tranquil blues and greens, and violets too,
That in your watery world to us, gives such a wondrous view,
We know your unleashed mighty force, the course you have to take,
The storms, the squalls, the hurricanes, these terrors make us quake.

Oh Sea, we know of other words like tranquil, calm and still,
Times when you are peaceful, with no need to thrill,
Contrasts are your constant plan, your order of the day,
And admiring you, we would not have you, any other way.

If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
There is so much to sailing a ship. There’s about a thousand different lines on a brig ship, and knowing what each one of those does, it takes a long time, and that’s why you have these cabin boys that start on the ship, and they learn throughout the years, and that’s why it takes so long to captain one. Tom Holland

Where do we set our sails? A master teacher once said that in life, we need grace from every corner of the seen and unseen universe. When we act with positive intention to lift others up, our energy expands and reverberates outwards towards other positive lights and sources of energy. As the reverberations pick up speed from the goodwill sent out by millions of us, the power of our prayers and purposeful goodwill lifts us and all in its path up. A boost of positive energy can give a person the rejuvenating energy they need to stay hopeful in turbulent, stormy times.

Align Yourself with Unshakeable/Positive and Proactive people: So set your sail in the direction of good, proactive people; set your sail to the port of grace and favor; set your sail on the sea of patience and healing. We can all add something to the healing of those in pain. We don’t need fancy footwork, we can start with a loving and compassionate heart. Where are you setting your sail in these turbulent times?

Alone On Sea – Poem by Allenika via poemhunter.com
Alone i lay on a wooden raft
Alone i stay in the dark
Alone i pray to survive
Alone i may not survive

Alone i look out the sea
Alone i wake up on the sea
Alone i seek out for help
Alone i may not survive

Alone i eat my dry food
Alone i drink the salty water
Alone i sit in the cold
Alone i may not survive

Alone, yes, alone i stare at the storm
Alone, yes, alone i live on the sea
Alone, yes, alone i wait for the rescue boat
Alone, yes, alone i may not survive

Alone, yes, alone i pray to be safe
Alone, yes, alone i call out for help
Alone, yes, alone i get on the boat
Alone, yes, alone i was rescued

Alone, yes, alone i lived on sea for months
Alone, yes, alone i walk ashore unaided
Alone, yes, alone i continue to hold the
Guinness World Record for survival at sea

Have a Happy, Healthy 2017!

I did include poetry to drive the point home. But this post is really about the storms that come into our lives and how we handle them. Sailing is just a metaphor for life’s unpredictable journey.

When I think of sailing, life’s journey comes to my mind. It has several troubled times as tides and storms as well as several peaceful full moon nights!!!

As soon as I hear the word sailing I always hear that song by Christopher Cross… “Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be….” I forget the rest of the words of the chorus now, but I’ll be humming it all day in my head now after seeing all these gorgeous pics. I think he also mentions something about when the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again, which really appeals to me, especially with all the sad things that have been happening in the world recently. Let’s hope it’s the winds start changing and that’s it’s smooth sailing from here

The images are calming, lol! This is motivating, though sometimes we don’t know who is more stable when we go through turbulence hence many people choose to stand alone. But I love the advise, it makes complete sense!

I like how you’ve likened sailing with our adventures through life and I agree whole heartedly that sometimes we need to step back and stop looking at the little faults in our lives when sometimes we have little to complain about in comparison to others in the world. Your posts are always so thought-provoking, I love it.

  12. 03/10/2017 6:02 am

I like that you changed the title, I think is works much better, I enjoyed seeing your thought process through that as well. The photos you chose to showcase this monday, is nice how you showed the many sides of the water, you depicted the water crashing against the rocks, being used for leisure and for work, but you also showed the calmness the water can have as well. These all correspondence to people and life as well and how the water when your sailing on it is not always calm and relaxed but it is also not always chasing into a rock wall wall. Its a very give and take relationships to people.

I love the Alenika poem. Very beautiful as is everything that you wrote and quite true. My favorite: “Sailing is just a metaphor for life’s unpredictable journey.” How true is that. Life has its high tides and low tides. I can honestly say that I’m thankful to have drifted into more highs than lows.

Staying calm in a storm when your sailing your supposed to know where the horizon is. So keeping focused helps in any situation. We all have resources and to utilize them not just in a crisis or an emergency could greatly help beforehand. Those images are so calming! What a great collage. When I think of sailing I just think of t as someone or something trying to reach their destination. Whether it’s successfully completing their goals or trying to find a path to success.

Some girlfriends and I were just talking this morning about “storms” in life. It’s the storms that have helped us to grow, to seek, and to understand much better. The storms are rough and nobody really wants them, but it’s during those challenging seasons that we fully realize our need. Out of that, we grow and hopefully can help others along.

When it comes to sailing, I guess it shows as some challenges and turbulence and how we get past it.

I like water, because it has the tendency to either calm you down or just destroy you, like sailing, which can be a metaphor for life. Loved the pictures!

I have ridden boats before, and even rowed a boat before, but I have not actually sailed, like on a sailboat where the wind blows the sail. I would like to experience this one day, but I have to confess I have some apprehension about it.

Great collection of pictures and topic as always! Sailing reminds me about the rhyme that is constantly playing in the background at home for my baby – Row row row your boat… It has such a powerful message!

When I think of sailing, open waters, turbulence and great walls of water, I think of the bible and the stories of Jesus. I know that may not be what other people would think of but the song Oceans by Hillsong is not only one of my favourite songs but it is the perfect way for me to think myself through stormy situations.

I’ve never thought of relating sailing to going through and overcoming hard times but what you’ve written makes perfect sense. You’re right, there will be turbulent waters and calm ones, just keep sailing to your destination.

This post made me think of the people who are suffering from depression. Their minds are like turbulent waters, disturbing, destroying their life. I know how this feels, my husband is suffering from it. I did too, when I was a child. Hopefully, me and my husband can turn the sails and get to that place where the water is still and calm.

I know I’ve said it before, but I always enjoy how you combine images with prose and discussion. Funny, the first thing that came to mind for me is the same as someone else said–Christopher Cross and his “Sailing” song! It’s almost like you need to combine that song about sailing and the Calgon slogan of “take me away” for the full effect! I like the emphasis on being proactive, of setting our intentions, and this quote: “We need grace from every corner of the seen and unseen universe.”

I really love this post about sailing. To me sailing is relaxing and moving gracefully through the waters. Sailing I believe is what we do through life and it is up to us how smooth we want it to go. Thanks for sharing and I shared the poem by Allenika with a friend who needed this message.

My takeaway is that in sailing life’s journey I need to employ certain competencies, one of which is to align myself with positive proactive people. The advice is good but finding those kinds of like-minded people is challenging.

It’s so interesting how life imitates sailing. Sometimes the waters are calm and you just coast, other times the wind is perfect and you can put the full sails out, other times it is turbulent and you aren’t sure if you make it another day.

The thought of sailing causes me anxiety although I know most don’t have this reaction. The thought I think of when thinking about this post is staying. Staying power to get through the rough times. Music such as Enya, humorous or relaxing TV shows, peaceful or heart warming company.
