Photo Challenge: WAITING
For this challenge, on WAITING, I chose to share photos of the deer and the occasional turkey that hang out in my yard. The center shots are related; it’s a doe/mother above and her fawn/baby hiding in my front garden below it. I opened my door to head out and the baby sat there staring at me, waiting and wondering if I would chase it away; Mother was nearby grazing and seemed somewhat unperturbed by my presence. After all, they come to my yard daily to hunt for food and to rest. Doe Deer studied me too and her better instincts said I was not the enemy so she kept on doing her thing. When I moved to head to my car, the baby bolted. It had been trained well by its mother… You can never trust these two legged devils, it must have thought… The turkey was with her charge too and gave me a bored glance and kept pecking away for food. She was in the backyard and I couldn’t quite capture her as she hung around the kitchen door. Yes, life is about waiting but, I had things to do and she was intent on not offering a selfie to me. The deer in my area are not timid. Humans are constantly encroaching on their terrain, so you can’t blame them. They give us lime disease, and we forcefully take their land by eminent domain. It’s a constant battle for ownership of the land. Both mother and baby deer stare at me, waiting for me to act or move… Even when I hold up my smartphone and take photos, they don’t run, they stare back at me wondering if I’m friend or foe. As long as I don’t move, they continue grazing like all is well… and usually it is. I no longer resent them for demolishing my tulips, digging up my perennials, and treating my garden like a free fine restaurant. However, the land was originally theirs and, while humans work to push them further and further away from their habitat, they fight back by venturing out into the neighborhood, seeking friendly homes and yards where food is free and barking dogs are history. For now, they wait and wonder how far humans will push them off their natural habitat.

Waiting is an interesting thing. Sometimes you should be patient and other times you need to take action… That poor deer, you can see it’s ribs
She is actually healthier than you think. She’s a nursing mom so the baby is taking some from her… They are fine. 🙂
Wow these are some very cool photos. you are very brave because I am terribly afraid of deer (even though they are so adorable lol)! It’s awesome to have the beauty of nature in your own yard!

We had a saying in the Army,”Hurry up and wait.” We all always wanting to do things in such a fast pace that we forget about the beauty of things. Thanks for the awesome photos and your thoughts.

Wow that is awesome! Deer would always roam the field across from my grandparents house and I would love to see them run and graze. I never was able to get this close to one though.
They don’t come so close to humans unless you go to Nara Park in Japan where the deer mingle with people. <3
Love how deer and even turkeys regularly visit you! I don’t live on the outskirts of Austin, where the deer is known to graze people’s yards – but I love little nature moments like these that’s just outside of your house. Must be a calm and peaceful moment!

I love seeing deer near my home. There is a cemetery I sometimes walk through and recently there have been three mama deer with six baby deer just hanging out. One of the baby deer saw me and started prancing around in a circle before running back to his mama. it was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

We also have those bold deer who will just hang out in your yard unless you purposely lunge at them. I do really like that quote about not just waiting in your corner.

Deer are such incredible animals. I’m constantly fascinated by them. Sadly, I have never seen one but I’ve always wanted to.
You could always visit the local zoo in your area. I bet they have some.

Deer can be so graceful and fun to spot in the wild. My kids are always looking for deer around our neighborhood.

Waiting can be exciting and frustrating at the same time. Can’t wait to see what is coming, but wondering why it is not there yet! Waiting is the virtue of hope in full gear.

Great pics. The deer in our area are not shy either. They literally just hang out in our yards.

In my area you run into deer everyday. This is due to humans taking over their natural habitat which is completely sad. I always wondered when will humans decide enough is enough and stop building on forested areas. I believe humans and animals can co/exist and share our beautiful city if only the humans would leave animals to roam free.
We have the same situation in mine … as I pointed out in my post. We have a lot of designated green space but it is slowly and surely diminishing.

If only I had the patience….These are great shots. Sadly the only time I seem to see a deer is when I’m driving or it stuck in the zoo. I particularly love how out of the element the asphalt makes the deer appear.

They do say that good things come to those who wait. I love the deer and they are absolutely lovely creatures, it requires patience and discipline to wait to take those pictures.
I love deer! They are so beautiful I’m not sure we have any in the area of Texas we live in, but I’ve always wanted to see one grazing and snap a few photos.

i grew up near the poconos & have met my fair share of not timid deer & worse lol – the pictures you captured of the deer & turkeys are great!
Your space are incredible with such wildlife abounding. I used to live in an area where wild deer regularly roamed our yards as well. It is a balance for sure. The waiting aspect… that is one of the hardest virtues in our society where instant gratification is the norm. Thanks for the encouragement today to embrace waiting.

I believe in the saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” I practice patience in most situations I am in. I am confident I will receive the blessings I ask God for. I will wait.
I love when deer are comfortable enough to come visit. That used to happen all the time in my last yard… But our new house had a bear visitor, so I guess that’s exciting too. Eek!
Waiting is hard thing to do, you need to have patience. It really means patience is a virtue. Looking on how well you wait, you took pictures amazing. Nice job, but I guess I can’t participate on challenges like this, you sure to be really hardworking on this.
My version of waiting is not those that just wait and waste time. I am getting myself prepared and waiting for the opportunity to strike.

You’re so lucky that you can presence this and they come to your backyard. I bet they don’t feel lucky, but at the same time, like you said, they have a free fine dine meal. I love animals, I love their instincts, waiting is in all of us. We all are waiting for something to happen. We’re waiting to be successful, we’re waiting to be parents, we’re waiting to be grandparents, we’re always waiting.

Aww I love when they get close to human. My family in law lives in the French countryside and deer also love to come visit in their backyard. I love to watch them though I always stay quite far not to disturb or scare them. Because these ones are timid 🙂

I am not patient and do not like to wait. I am impressed by people and animals that are patient cause it’s not in my DNA.
I think the deer photo definitely captures the essence of waiting and timing, although the deer you described might be a bit bolder!. I haven’t seen deer in years probably because I live in the center of the city, but I do think they’re interesting creatures.

We have so many deer in our neighborhood. They always seem to come in packs of at least three, do you find that too?
I think I would take two picture and then just left. I get so scary around animals.
I love deers. I have deers like this near my home too they are always around as we have a huge yard. I do feel like humans have taken over their land and put our houses there…kinda sad to think about sometimes but hopefully we can share the land in peace.

These are some cool photos. Waiting is also a kind of perseverance.
I love deer and they live in my area as well but they are not friendly. The only friendly ones I have seen were in a protected area nearby. I passed by on the path, in the woods when I saw an entire heard in front of me. As long as I kept my pace on the path they just looked and didn’t run. It was such a special moment as I have never seen friendly deer in the wild before this experience.
They are pretty mild mannered animals unless threatened

My husband’s sister in law just posted a picture of a deer peering into her kitchen window. I loved that photo. The deer wasn’t spooked at all with someone taking a picture of them. I guess it was just hungry and it wandered to their house hoping and waiting to be given something to eat.
Beautiful pictures of innocence in action! I wish my children and grandchildren could all live as I did as a child with deer, birds, raccoons and a occasional opossum running freely (over our land to watch) without worry.

I was in California last summer in Orinda, and there are also deer in that mountain community. Tough to see how human “progress and development” have encroached on the habitat of wild animals. Waiting for some sort of natural balance.

It’s just so nice to be perfectly still and wait for things to happen. But nowadays, patience is hard to get by. Time slows down when we wait and it won’t be long until we call it a day.
We have deer that live near our home too. I always love watching them but it is sad that our poor deer are losing their homes to booming construction.

Waiting can be really hard. Sometimes, we need to have that extra patience to get by… I think we can get one or two lesson from the deer… It’s best to wait and not let unexpected moments perturb us.

Waiting for me is to enter carefully know your surroundings and when its ok to make a move.
We used to have a doe and her baby come to our yard and rest. She would stay awake while her fawn slept, lying right next to it but with her head up. It was sweet. 🙂
WE have that happen too… They are very sweet… even though they destroyed my garden and gave one of my kids lime disease… sigh. 🙁

I just knew that deer can transmit lime disease. Still you’re still lucky seeing them appearing in your place. We used to have local deers here in my country when I was still in highschool. But now not even one shows.

Sorry about what happened to your garden. I can imagine at the moment when it would happen it’s a lot… I truly feel bad for the animals though. They really don’t have a permanent place to call home.

This is absolutely amazing, how wonderful that you have these beautiful creatures so close to your home and that you both had the understanding and patience to be able to enjoy each others company without either disturbing each other.
