On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights – a total solar eclipse. NASA

We should always endeavor to wonder at the permanent thing, not at the mere exception. We should be startled by the sun, and not by the eclipse. We should wonder less at the earthquake, and wonder more at the earth. Gilbert K. Chesterton

What did we learn today? This morning, starting around 10:30am, we experienced a phenomenon that we have not seen in the USA since 1979 – A Total Solar Eclipse. People gathered all around the country and the gradual shift of the sun made its way behind the moon thrilling us and holding us all in awe. It is an event that won’t happen again till 2024; the reactions and gatherings of folks across the US made it clear that as a nation, we can come together in unity to celebrate events that bind us all. Yet, as I write this post, it saddens me that we are not as actively engaged in protecting our environment to ensure that the next Total Eclipse will even happen or, at least, happen in a safe and just world that isn’t decimated by toxins, hatreds and war.  What could we have learned from this momentous scientific event?

What are some lessons learned today? From my perspective, we learned a number of key things today: 1. Community – when events occur that pull people together, most of us are able to set aside our differences and rally to share in goodness or powerful events. 2. Beauty of Our Planet – Who would argue with this simple fact? We have inherited a magical and beautiful planet that offers us many opportunities to see her effulgence even in an eclipse, to see her power in nature, and to celebrate the occurrence of supernatural events. But that is not enough, we must all participate in sustaining our planet and not sit back and watch the destruction and deforestation of sacred green space around the world.

It’s the laws of physics that allow us to say exactly what time the sun is going to rise. What time the eclipse is going to begin. What time the eclipse is going to end. Neil deGrasse Tyson

3. Appreciation for our Scientific Community – As far back as 1979, it was calculated that the next eclipse would occur this year and it did. The scientific community and NASA did their homework and delivered a ton of information and a livestream as the eclipse made its way across America. It was the ultimate experience of education and science in action. We learned, we listened and we were wowed by this special day.  What does it mean? It means that we must support science education and research. We must not sit back and let a precious and important arm of our nation be undercut and set aside. Each of us must make a commitment to educate ourselves and our children on the value of sustaining our planet and our scientific community 4. Building Memories – A popular meme that I have experienced since moving to the US is the constant question: Where were you when…?  Because this is considered a once in a lifetime experience, many of us will now have a shared memory that we can reach for when we meet and try to initiate conversations. Building and sharing memories help people recognize their common bond and it helps us see the value of shared experiences, our common humanity and community.

Feb. 26, 1979: The US Northwest gets a view of the solar eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights – a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun’s tenuous atmosphere – the corona – can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk. NASA created this website to provide a guide to this amazing event. Here you will find activities, events, broadcasts, and resources from NASA and our partners across the nation. NASA

What more can we learn from this special event? Even with the terribly tragic events of the last week in Charlottesville and elsewhere around the world, we can find hope in being reminded that the sun shines on all of us equally and that our humanity ought to be celebrated and respected in the same manner. If Mother Earth can open her bowels and show us spectacular occurrences to pull us together, what stops us from doing same? We must not allow ignorance and petty hatreds to eclipse our shared humanity.  Hate should never find a home in our hearts and minds. Our time on this planet is finite and we might as well put our effort to its highest and best use. Connecting with our fellowmen/women and serving our communities are key to our collective survival. As ABC News anchor Frank Reynolds said 38 years ago, “May the shadow of the moon fall on a world in peace.”

    I got to see the eclipse with the special glasses today, although here in Illinois it was very cloudy so we had glimpses. We had 87% coverage and it was pretty neat!

    I love your awesome photo’s. Some are so clear and shiny while others are that and beautiful. I did not watch the Eclipse, although everyone around me was in a huge hub bub about it. Living in NY I heard we received a larger coverage some 70%. I was just happy that people were excited and communicating.

    If my memory serves me right, my first eclipse experience was when I was in first or second grade. Our teacher gave us film negatives and told us to look through it, not directly at the sun. It was such a surreal experience that I still remember it up to this day. 🙂

    Today I watched the eclipse with my little boy…. it actually did not get dark where we were at but he loved it and we had much fun learning all about the eclipse and how it works prior to watching 🙂

    It was unfortunate that i could not witness personally this breathtaking event, as the eclipse was not in part of the world. Though I did watch the live telecast in some news channel.

    So lucky you got to see it! You are right….sometimes we need an event like the eclipse to gather all together and wonder how beautiful our planet is…it is a shame we don’t do it more often tho…..great article!

    I am a bit sad not been able to see the eclipse. But I totally love what you think you have learn from this event. That people put aside the differences and just enjoy this unique experience together! And yes the mother nature is awesome!

    I’m really bummed we didn’t get to enjoy it on this side of the world, but it was quite the experience seeing everyone’s posts on Facebook. It seemed like for a brief moment, all other problems and issues were set-aside to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience together as a whole.

    We have to protect our environment! We all seem to be fascinated by things like the solar eclipse and run out to buy glasses so we can see it, but we can’t take the time to recycle or create more sustainable daily practices to help our earth. We all have to come together to protect our planet so we can continue to enjoy events like the eclipse.

Even here in South Africa the news is full of pictures and everyone is trying to figure when we’ll see one next 😉

    It has been a while and it’s always so exciting to witness a natural phenomenon! I think it’s amazing how people come together to watch it. It’s definitely also a great way to teach the kids more about science.

    I did not watch the eclipse. Just relied on everyone on social media to cover it and they sure did. But I agree with your post. This was the time to appreciate the scientific community and the wonder of our solar system.

    Oh that is a wonderful post for Motivation Mondays! Love how the stars aligned to give us a Solar Eclipse on that day. And every point that you’ve mentioned are so true – I truly believe it’s one of the few times our nation forgot their problems and just enjoyed the cosmic magic.

    I was a bit underwhelmed and disappointed with the sighting of the eclipse. In Memphis, we had LOTS of huge fluffly clouds. I got a peek of the crescent here and there. And it never got dark when we were supposed to experience 95-98% totality. Oh well, we have another one in 7 years.

    The Eclipse was a wonderful event. In Knoxville we had over 10 million more people than normal in our state just to see it. It was my 4th Eclipse that I can remember and I am glad to have been a part of it!

    I am so glad i was able to experience an eclipse . While I didn’t get to see the full thing because of where i am located in the caribbean i saw some really good videos. It such a wonderful experience I tell you . We indeed learned some good lessons .

    Wow it is incredible that this was the first eclipse since 1979 and that the next one will be 2024. I have never seen a eclipse before but I agree that we do need to do more to protect our environment x

    It’s funny how something like the eclipse seemed to bring so many people together. For just a couple of hours, people were able to come together to experience simething so magnificent. I wish it could be like this all the time. Great post.

    I was also really pleasantly surprised by how many people the eclipse brought together! I wasn’t anywhere near the path of totality and it was still really cool seeing everyone go outside to look. (Then again, I work in the science community so there is that haha)

    Unfortunately, I do not have big Astrology knowledge, but it is a subject which always fascinated me. Somehow, sun and moon eclipse give me bundles of energy and vitality.
    How this happens, I am not sure yet, but it is always worth to find out new great infos about this subject.

    The eclipse was a bust where I live, but some of what I saw was pretty cool. I’m just kind of glad it’s over simply because I was getting tired of folks blaming it for their bad behavior and random weird glitches that were happening. LOL!

    I also did a blog about the Solar Eclipse and my experience with it in Las Vegas. we unfortunately didn’t experience too much of it especially since it was gloomy and drizzling as well!. Your post was far more informative than mine. Thank you!

    I have found it quite fascinating to see all the people gathered together all over to watch the eclipse. Definitely got me thinking that everyone realizes how astounding the event is, but do they think about the future and whether it will happen again if we keep on destroying our planet.

    I noticed some comments on Twitter about how it was nice to have virtually everyone coming together over the eclipse & how for a short time, we all got along & forgot about all the craziness. I live in Charlotte & we had 97.8% totality. Some of our neighbors were outside with their glasses (we had some too) when another neighbor’s kids came out. The kids borrowed glasses for a couple minutes so that they could join in. I had given a pair to my mom which she took to work. People in the building next to her saw that she was outside with them & borrowed them. She said about 7 people total used the glasses to view the eclipse. That’s a cool way to see community come together over a rare experience.

    I wish I could have experienced it ! The only eclipse I’ve seen was one when I was very young so I didn’t know what the hell was going on therefore I didn’t enjoy it as much

    A full eclipse with a diamond ring is a very rare phenomena. Great capture. I had witnessed one when I was very small and the memories are still intact

    As far as I could I have seen twice solar and lunar eclipses since a kid and on my teenage life. I remember we used an improvised smoke glass to view the solar eclipse or to view its reflection on the basin filled with water.

    My kids and I had the opportunity to be in the path of totality, and while I thought it was definitely beautiful and a sight to see, my kiddos were a little disappointed. We live in the city so when it got dark A LOT of lights came on lol

    Yes the eclipse was quite spectacular from some parts of the globe but alas not from where I live in Co Wicklow Ireland. There was little or no evidence of it this time round. I also think the tragic terrorist attacks in Barcelona put a damper on it for many people. Very in dept post. Well done!

    The eclipse was only partially visible in our area. Nevertheless, we watched it on T.V. and it was awesome! What did I learn from the eclipse? The symbolism that no matter how much darkness tries to cover you, your light will still find ways to shine through. 🙂 Have a great day Elizabeth.

    This was such an amazing experience! Today I learned that, no matter what our walk in life, we all came together to view a miracle in the skies. Funny. God really can get our attention if He wants it 🙂

    I love eclipses! In my part of the world, this one came at sunset and if I had known earlier, I would have chosen to climb the Atomium & view it from there! Missed it!

    It was definitely exciting to hear about the eclipse and it was more exciting to prepare for it. It’s awesome to witness especially with the kids! My youngest was definitely hyped up and we made sure that she had time to see it!

    My brother and his wife turned the eclipse into a vacation. They traveled by train up to Oregon to watch the eclipse. Their pictures were amazing!

    The solar eclipse was such a phenomenal event! It was so nice experiencing this phenom all the while feeling this energy of unity among strangers all across the U.S. It definitely was welcomed change of conversation for a bit.

    This Solar Eclipse was absolutely surreal and an experience of a lifetime! I watched it with my friends. This Solar Eclipse reminded us that we are the citizen of the Earth, therefore we should work together to save our environment and not fight among each other on the basis of color, caste, creed, nationality etc!

    The eclipse was unreal….We were privileged to be able to watch it from a State Park lake in the North Georgia mountains. We were in totality. It was an adventure that my kids will never forget…..

    i understand what your saying and for me we as a people are responsible for events and i never understand why a ‘difference’ is always subject to hate. especially when you have natural wonders like an eclipse to remind us how lucky we are to live in a planet such as this

    I have never fully seen a eclipse in my entire life! I remember my family gathered around the door and peeking through a crack to see it because apparently ‘it weakens the eye’ – and it was such a proper event kinda situation in my house!

    My husband and I too saw the eclipse. We left in the morning and drove three hours south to Missouri. Here in the midwest, it had been cloudy and rainy, but by the time of the event, the skies had parted just enough for us to witness it in all of its glory. There we were, just the two of us on a gravel road, surrounded by corn fields when the sky went dark. I had every intention of taking photos, but in the moment, I simply wanted to take it all in. x

    I’ve heard and seen so much about the eclipse even over here in the UK. I agree with you on the community spirit comment too as I watched a video on YouTube of it and it was lovely to see everyone coming together to enjoy it.

    I studied astronomy in school. It was fascinating. But somehow science wasn’t a strength at the time. Yes, it’s historical because it’s happening for the first time after 1979.

    The eclipse was such an interesting moment for me. I ended up watching it on TV because we only got a partial eclipse out here in Los Angeles. For a few moments it reminded me that we are a tiny spec in this huge and vast universe. We need to think about the bigger picture and stop acting up! We’re not as important as we think we are!

    I wish I was able to see the solar eclipse live. But it wasn’t possible from my end in NY.. but I saw how everyone united all over the county’s via the internet, you are right about how this shows we can stick together if we want to for a common cause. Now my question is why don’t we?? Could it be selfishness, or maybe pride?

    YAY A SCIENCE ARTICLE! I love-love-love this article so much! Especially the science community part. Sadly, I couldn’t attend the solar eclipse because I live on the wrong side of the planet. But thanks to NASA I could watch the sun disappear too 😀

    I was too afraid to look at the eclipse but I did notice the day become darker. I live in Canada so where I was the eclipse was only about 75% coverage. I like the positive meaning that you attributed to the eclipse at the end of your article.

    I remember when I’ve seen my first and only total solar eclipse, back in 1999, in Europe. My country was in the middle of the path and the sight was amazing! I remember how for a few seconds there was no day light anymore, what a fantastic phenomenon to observe, for a little girl.
