Motivation Mondays: Revisiting Friendship

“It is easy to say how we love new friends, and what we think of them, but words can never trace out all the fibers that knit us to the old.” George Eliot

Motivation Mondays: Revisiting Friendship

Did you know that yesterday was International Friendship Day at the UN? I decided it would be a terrific idea to revisit the subject of friendship, even though, I’ve written so much on the subject on this blog. Why does the topic fascinate me? Why does the subject intrigue you?  Friendships have held our attention for ages because they are one of the most precious relationships we will have in our lifetime. Some people hold their friends in higher esteem than they do family members because a true friend is a reservoir of the deepest secrets, and is often held up as an example of unequivocal Trust.  The gift of true friendship is a very special boon because it is not an easy relationship to form and it takes time, commitment, trust and sincerity to build.

Once we get clear about our friendships, we will notice that our true friends make time to talk with and encourage us. While most of us have many acquaintances we share fun times with, there is a clear distinction between our closest friends and our acquaintances.  My dad used to say that to have even 1-2 friends who stay true to us, lift us up when we are down and applaud our successes is a rare gem and a sign of great fortune.  We know we have a true friend when we can be vulnerable in their presence, be open about our struggles and share our foibles with that person and not feel judged. Today, let’s honor all the TRUE friends in our lives. Our family members are our first friends because they know us well and have watched us grow but, there are others who enter our lives and bring an eternal gift of friendship with them. You know who those people are. Cherish them and express your gratitude for having someone to share a lifeline together.

A Time to Talk By Robert Frost
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, ‘What is it?’
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

Motivation Mondays: Revisiting Friendship

What about International Day of Friendship? Why does it matter? If we think about it carefully, it takes unity and friendship to keep nations at bay instead of fighting each other. International Friendship Day  was an initiative proposed by UNESCO and adopted by the General Assembly in 1997. The original impetus for this special day was to encourage a culture of peace around the world and, by 1999, the UN had adopted 8 areas of concern that remain in the forefront of international relations around the the globe. Every year, on July 30, the UN uses the opportunity to remind us of the power of friendship to heal, help and rebuild torn nations. We can use this opportunity to do some reconnecting and rebuilding in our lives too.

What are those 8 areas of concern? What do we need to remember when we think of friendship between nations and people? To build meaningful relationships between individuals and nations, we must remember: to foster a culture of peace through education; promote sustainable economic and social development; promote respect for all human rights; ensure equality between women and men; foster democratic participation; advance understanding, tolerance and solidarity; support participatory communication and the free flow of information and knowledge; AND promote international peace and security.  If we made a commitment to honor these areas of concerns in our neighborhoods and homes, we will be on the road to a more unified global community. The road to friendship begins with each step we take to connect with others.

What does Friendship mean to you? I’ve written a lot about the subject of friendship on this blog  and have shared some posts below and above.  I believe we thrive when we have friends; people who share in our sadness and joy, encourage and uplift us, and don’t mince words when we step out of line… All noble acts. Some of the qualities I cherish in my closest friendships are; being non-judgmental, fun, honesty, trustworthy, kindness, a good soul and … a good listener.  My friends have always added something to my life and,  when I am feeling great or perhaps a little down, I know they are nearby with comforting advice. That said, having friendships with others is wonderful but, the most important one is our friendship with ourselves. We must also remember to be friends to ourselves; self care is important too. Take care of you! How do you view friendship? What about you?

Friendship IXX by Khalil Gibran
And a youth said, “Speak to us of Friendship.”
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.”
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.
And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed. via famouspoetsandpoems

Wow. Very deep. I agree that as you get older you become clear about your friendships. When I was younger life was fun, everything was simple and i called everyone my friend. I got older i learned the hard way that not everyone is a friend and when you have a good friend you should cherish them.

    • 01/08/2017 11:29 am

Well said Sue… we learn much of this as we mature and reflect on our relationships. The good ones are worth saving and cherishing.

Friendship means a lot to me. I have moved to a new country and had to leave all my close friends behind. And I find it so hard here to make new friends, it feels that everyone already has their friends. It’s really important to take care of our friendships and keep our friends very close.

    • 01/08/2017 11:28 am

I totally get your experience. When I moved here from the UK, I felt lost for a while and missed all my friends, many were childhood friends. It took time and it will for you too. Join things that you enjoy and that could be a venue. Something else, when I moved from NY to LA, I had a harder time making friends because I moved for work and it wasn’t easy to socialize that much… It was an eye opener too. <3

What a beautiful post! Friendship is so important. It took me so many years to realize friendship didn’t mean having people to go out with or have on call, friendship is the people who understand when you need to disappear from the world for a little while. They’re the people who show up at your door when you’re having a rough day. The people who stick around even when you aren’t at your best!

Great post. I was just thinking about friendship the other day and this post hits the nail on the head for me. I think a lot of people, including myself, confuse “friends” with “acquaintances”, and then we’re often confuse & disappointed when that acquaintance falls short. Usually this happens when we’re expecting friend behavior from someone who is, in fact, more of an acquaintance.

Friendship is actually very important, when you don’t have people that will play you or mock you. But that is life, I guess… True friends are hard to come by, but when they do, they are really worth being celebrated on International Friendship Day. Hope you have true friends to celebrate that day with! Cheers!

I love this quote, “The language of friendship is not words but meanings.” True friends are hard to come by and worth holding on to. Over the years I have lost many friends I thought true but as the famous phrase says, some are for a reason and some for a season.

I read this and am going to spend this evening thinking about how many people in my life I would be vulnerable with, talk about my own struggles and share my insecurities with. The list is not long and I will definitely be more appreciate of them.

I feel like friendships between kids are so much more pure than friendships between adults. With kids, there’s no strings attached and it’s pure love.

It is great to have a friend, a true one who lives nearby. I only have a handful and we rarely see each other. But we still stay connected through social media. I will send them a message and let them know how much I treasure their friendship.

It’s definitely cool trying to build bridges by creating friendships with different people. I do think that we have lost some of the art of being a good friend and I think it’s important to reach out to someone new and build new friendships as well as maintaining the ones you have.

Just love the this weeks motivational monday. It’s so prevalent as we live in times where we aren’t always harnessing friendship both near us and internationally. But it really is about creating a peaceful, harmonious friendship and bond with each other and globally.

This is so moving. My friends are such a blessing in my life. Your father was right, that having 1-2 close friends really makes life richer. I am so lucky that I got blessed in life with the friends that I have, because they help me through everything, and I do my very best to do the same.

Since moving to Sweden, I actually have made friends from more than just Sweden. One of my closest friends is from Trinidad and Tobago. It is such an awesome feeling being able to talk with her about her culture, and gain an understanding of a different part of the world. We also compare things from back home, and how we adjusted to living in Sweden. I am so thankful that I was given the path in life that I have been to meet her.

Friendship is an amazing thing, and I am so blessed in this area of my life. You have summed up beautifully how important it is! Thank you for sharing this!

I will agree with you on how true friends take out time and try to be there for you. However I do believe friendships have changed a bit due to this social media era. Their were times when interaction was much more personal and intimate than nowdays. Friends used to hang out, call each other in happiness and sorrow but now I think that has been limited to facebook posts and likes.

I’m always envious of people who are able to maintain life long friendships and think it truly takes two very special people. I’ve had a friend who has floated in and out of my life for the past 25(!) years. Lately, she’s floated out. A permanent change in her life that I’ve had to accept. She’s still the same on the inside, or at least, I think she is. But her life looks different, and her words sound different, and it’s just that sometimes people change the very things you once loved about them the most. x

I cherish my friendships, especially with those who are more like family. I am blessed to have one such wonderful friend and we always refer to each other as a sister-friend. We’ve known each other most of our lives, since we were young girls in Sunday school together.

She came from a home with an alcoholic abusive father, so she spent more time at our home than her own. In fact, she lived with us during her final high school year and got married right after graduation (and they are still married today, 42 years later!) She loved my parents – especially my Dad, as he treated her right and accepted her as if she was one of his own daughters.

Today, even though we live in different states, we still keep in touch and when we do talk or visit — we can pick up the conversation as if it was “yesterday” instead of years ago!

I absolutely love those photos. They not only show our friendships but those of other countries. I think International Friendship Day is very necessary to not only keep our countries connected but also to remember it each year so that those thoughts don’t get left by the wayside. Without country friendships we could not work together on other issues such as clean water for all, just to name one.
